CourseBeyond began as a way to recreate the classroom experience through an online platform. Current online or eLearning services offer their customers a single dimensional experience (video or documents). CourseBeyond seeks to bring together all aspects of the classroom environment to make online learning much more real.
The concept was then extended to service customer groups wanting to build portals where they could educate, share knowledge, and build a closeness with their respective communities. That’s when Gather was created.
Being able to partner with an organization such as MESA provides two things for our business
Legitimacy - Recognition we are a serious business both in the start-up commuity as with our potential clients
Guidance - Assistance to help us focus as we take the next steps to grow
We are currently underway with a customer segmentation project to better understand the type of customers we are servicing and the type of customers we should be servicing. We are expecting completion of this project by the end of July and expect it will provide guidance on the direction we should be following.
At this time we are looking closely at two broad markets and the segments included within.
Educational - eLearning is a $56.2B business and likely to double by 2015
Individual and small business providers -
Educational institutions -
Corporate - 77% of companies use eLearning today
Community -
Non-profits - of which there are close to 1M public charity organizations in the US alone
We are currently working the on the go-to-market strategy. Much will be learned by the segmentation research which we will develop into a go-to-market strategy. In broad strokes it will should look something like the following.
Marketing approach
focus on use case > automate > repeat
overseas email gathering > email and webinar funnels
content marketing
PR
Sales approach
for any client under $200/month - automate
Over $200/month - sales team
Potentially some affiliate/reseller programs
Education - build your own with a combination of tools such as; GoToMeeting, Email, Plugins, etc.
Portals - Specific industry suites, combo of Dropbox, Google Drive, Email, Basecamp, etc
Breakeven - calculated at a $100,000 salary per employee - roughly 16 clients per employee
