This document summarizes a classroom lesson on using the STAR method to develop skills matrices. It provides instructions on how to structure stories using Situation, Task, Action, and Result (STAR) and emphasizes spending 60% of the story on Actions. Failure stories should focus on lessons learned. Students will practice telling stories and receive feedback. The lesson recaps using the skills matrix for resumes and interviews and reminds students of upcoming assignments.
4. Opening Lesson
“Note that this journey is
uniquely yours, no one
else's. So the path has
to be your own. You
cannot imitate somebody
else's journey and still
be true to yourself. Are
you prepared to honor
your uniqueness in this
way?”
Jon Kabatt-Zinn

• Who?
• What?
• When?
• Where?
• What did I do
wrong?

accountable for
the mistakes
made?

15. Failure Stories
Story clearly indicates what went wrong
and accountability is taken
Majority of the story focuses on lessons
learned (i.e. personal and professional
development)
Student shows what they would do
differently if faced with the situation
again, or what they already did since
(comeback story)
Generally aim to be: authentic, humble,
accountable
17. Activity
1. Applicants have 2 min to tell a story (either success or failure)
2. Interviewers have 1 min to provide feedback (TA’s will be listening)
• What is the storyteller missing from their story? (Situation)
• Is is specific enough?
• What is confusing? Is the skill relevant?
• Are there step-by-step actions?
• Is the story appropriate for an interview?

“Through it all, we
attempt to bring balance
to the present moment,
understanding that in
patience lies wisdom,
knowing that what will
come next will be
determined in large
measure by how we are
now.”
Jon Kabat-Zinn
How to incorporate into the skills matrix
*useful to tie back (core/key qualitites)
*how this links to the next thing
*leading into the stories (don’t ask for the themes, just ask them about the story portion of the strengthsquest // have you thought about the story behind of it)
Situation – background setting
Action – what did you do, how did you do it? Outline the steps you took to get the result. The Play-by-play
Result – quantify if you can (%,$, increase, decrease, save cost by x amount)
4 rounds – 1 story each! (other 3 listen, provide feedback)
