Environmental Sociology Essay
Development processes is connected with environmental degradation and use of natural resources. Rudel et al. (2011) assumes the present of two
distinct waves of development power which control environment. The first wave of political economy deals with the power of capitalism as the main
agent for environmental degradation, while the second wave concern with the social power (community) to control the use of natural resources.
In this first wave scenario, the idea is that capitalism is a significant power for shaping the performance of environment. IPAT/STIRPAT Theory
proposes that capitalism is the cause for environment degradation because ––in combination with rapid population growth and affluence (prosperity)––
they altogether...show more content...
(2011) provides examples of this theory by pointing the heavy industrial production in East Asia and former socialist countries after World War II.
Principally, Treadmill Production Theory do not consider population and affluent as significant factor for environmental degradation, and put more
emphasis on the issue of technology as the main contributor for the decrease of environmental quality. Both the IPAT/STIRPAT and Treadmill
Production theories overlook the condition "behind the scene", why the technology exists in the process of development. In other words, these theories
do not consider the social actors which are responsible for the present of this technology.
Indeed, the coercion of capital to exploit natural resources is possible only because it is supported by the conglomeration of powerful social actors
behind it. According to Growth Machine Theories, syndication of vested interests (government, land owners, developers, real estate companies), which
often claim themselves as "pro–growth" coalition, encourages local development through real estate business activities, while excluding the interest
local population who previously occupy the sites for years (Rudel et al., 2011). Huge commercial farming scheme for the sake of development in rural
areas is other typical of the oppression from outside of the local community which tries to stick the capital into certain local areas (). Since local
community usually has no systematic organization to balance

Globalization and the Environment Essay examples
Economy is not a separate thing from production, consumption and exchange. Economics pays no attention to goods and services provided by nature,
air, water, soil and sunlight that produce everything we need for survival and all the riches we are able to accumulate. What is the cost of globalization
to the environment? Does globalization have the same goals for a healthy planet and justice for people?
Timothy Taylor writes, "Moreover, largemultinational companies typically do not perceive it to be in their self–interest to seek out locations where they
can pollute most heavily." He goes on to explain that these companies have a design in place with pollution–control that meets the standards of
countries with strict environmental laws....show more content...
However, Timothy Taylor points to globalization contributing to the "churning of the labor market as people move in and out of jobs." Thomas
Grennes writes, "Opposition to globalization has taken the form of policies designed to protect traditional jobs, but these jobs can be preserved only by
giving up economic growth that generates creative destruction." He defines Creative destruction as, "Innovations that stimulate general economic
growth simultaneously destroy specific jobs as emerging technologies replace older technologies."
Christopher Bright brings up the fact that pathogens, plants, insects, fish and mammals are being inadvertently transported from their native habitats to
invade non–native territories. Bioinvasion is a result of international trade. Examples of this include invasive exotic weeds in Colorado, Formosan
termites in the southeastern United States, Atlantic coastline native comb jelly in the Black Sea, and the Asian wood–boring beetle established in
eastern North America. According to Bright,
"Real damage is occurring on a more fundamental, biological level: in grasslands, forests,

Personal Statement For Environmental Engineering
Preserving the environment is one of the most critical issues we are facing today. How we act now will determine the fate of future generations. What
really inspired me to consider environmental engineering as a profession was my Advanced Placement Environmental Science class in high school – it
opened my eyes to global issues such as overpopulation, loss of biodiversity, inefficient energy sources, irresponsible waste disposal, etc.– and it
motivated me to want to do something about it. What I want to ultimately accomplish in this field of work is facilitate the growth of the use of
renewable energy sources, support responsible population reduction initiatives, and develop agricultural practices that ensure food and water security
for every single person on the planet. The nature of the work varies depend on what one wants to specialize in. Many engineers work in office settings
(with a great deal of operational record keeping, paperwork, and technical reports), but it often requires hands–on work and on–site oversight, especially
when working in construction, ecosystem remediation, natural resource cultivation, or waste management. Oftentimes, engineers work over 40 hours a
week in order to meet deadlines and finish all their tasks. On average, daily face–to–face, email, and telephone communication, and group collaboration
with contractors, staff, and clients are necessary for careers offered to environmental engineers. At the same time, independent work is emphasized.

With the increasingly growing concern of climate change and its impact on the environment, it is reasonable to ask how the environment will affect
Earth 's living organisms, from the small to the big (Freitas et al., 2015). Fish are poikilothermic organisms, meaning their body temperature is
susceptible to and easily influenced by external environmental changes. The metabolic rate, defined as the total chemical activity in an organism, also
changes with body temperature (Pfluegl 2014). These factors make fish a simple subject to conduct experiments with in regards to the effects in one
area of climate change: the rise of sea temperature (Freitas et al., 2015). The increase of temperature may affect fish behavior, as well as diet, migration,
and other demands that require energy (Johnston et al., 1987). The effects could ultimately permeate into the ecosystem 's function and by
consequence, humanity (Walberg 2011). This small scale experiment sought to observe the effect of warm temperature on the metabolic activity of
goldfish via the measurement of the concentration of oxygen the fish consumed. The experiment tested the null hypothesis that increasing the water
temperature of a goldfish 's environment does not have a significant effect on the metabolism rate of the goldfish.
Methods and Materials:
In order to measure the oxygen consumption rate in goldfish, a small oxygen chamber was used to conduct the experiment. The chamber had a built–in
probe that provided a updated

My Love Of The Environment
I have always been concerned about the environment. In elementary school, I made posters encouraging students to recycle and hung them up
everywhere. I organized my first protest when I was nine. My best friend and I made picket signs to object the trimming of trees on our street. I didn't
realize at the time it was to protect the power lines, but the good intentions were there.
My concern for protecting the environment (and every tree on the street) has only grown stronger as I've grown up; now, I'm choosing to major in
Environmental Studies because I know that the environment is all we have. Humans are fully dependent on natural resources, but we continue to
overfish oceans, chop down rainforests, and use harmful practices like fracking to extract oil from the earth. We're so focused on short term financial
gains that we forget the fact that our environment influences our entire lives; every poor choice we make now will spiral out to impact future
generations. I want to major in environmental studies so that I can better understand the complex relationships between humans and the environment,
and find ways for humans to take care of the environment instead of exploiting it.
My love of the environment has always been supported by my strong interest in politics. I am especially drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of this
major; to solve environmental issues, it is necessary to understand politics, economics, and human nature. I want to have a job where I can make a

Global Warming and Climate Change Essay
Global warming and the greenhouse effect are issues discussed by scientists all the time. A natural process that keeps earths temperature at a livable
rate is called the greenhouse effect. The energy from the sun warms up the earth when the rays from the sun are absorbed by greenhouse gasses. The
gasses then become trapped in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide are the most common greenhouse gasses.
Greenhouse gases cause the radiant heat of the sun to be trapped in the Earths lower atmosphere which causes global warming. If there weren't any
greenhouse gasses, the earth would be really cold due to very little sun rays being absorbed on the earth. Global warming can and...show more content...
Every time the temperature keeps rising, the more carbon dioxide will be released. When this process gets going, it is very hard to keep in control.
Methane is another greenhouse gas. Methane is a greenhouse gas whose molecules absorb heat trying to escape to space. Natural sources include
wetlands, swamps and marshes, termites, and oceans. (Methane) Methane gases are released into the atmosphere. Atmospheric methane has doubled
since the Industrial Revolution and has "contributed 20 percent to the enhancement of the greenhouse effect, second only to carbon dioxide".
(Methane) A major effect of global warming is there will be higher temperatures and it will affect how the water cycle works. Places on the earth
will receive more rain than others. There will be a great amount of evaporation going on from the rivers, lakes and oceans due to a increase in the
temperature. This could be a good thing for some people needing rain and a bad thing for other people who get to much rain. While the temperature
is on the rise there will be greater amount of rains all over. In return with all of the rains this could help farmers. It would extend the growing season
for crops. This would greatly help out the farmers because they would be making more money. While this is the positive side of the rain, this could
also hurt the farmers. There are some crops that out there that will die with to much rain. There

Importance Of Protecting The Environment Essay
Our environment undoubtedly has many things we can use to benefit our everyday lives. Even if our environment is not in tip–top shape, we need to
start taking care of it better. If we don't many things will happen. These things include plants dying, animals going extinct, air becoming polluted, coral
reefs dying, and water rapidly coming contaminated. Another problem our environment has to face, overcome, or adapt too is Global Warming. Global
Warming has and will continue to impact our environment worldwide if we do not begin taking immediate action and do something to protect our
environment.
Protecting our environment is indeed the first action that should be taken. Protecting the environment should take place locally and globally in my
opinion. There are many things that our local environment could do that would have have a tremendous impact on our environment that genuinely
would not take oodles of effort. A few of these could be as easy as recycling soda cans, old school or work papers, and glass bottles and taking them
to a local recycling center. When you recycle you are reusing things or making them into new things. Two more examples would be hosting or
participating in a highway clean up, or planting a community garden at a park. Globally, humans are responsible for Greenhouse Gasses, pollution, and
fossil fuel shortages. Globally, if everyone pitched in just a little bit, greenhouse gas emissions could go down drastically. The way we could cut these
emissions

Climate Change Impacts and Threats Essay
Global climate change, most commonly referred to as global warming, is a worldwide problem facing our environment. Global climate change is
simply a rise or fall in Earth's temperature over a period of time. Although this problem has natural causes, the true detriments come from humans and
how we live day to day. Although many people have heard ofclimate change, there is not a big effort to fix this problem or to understand it. The best
way to rectify this change to the environment is to help others recognize the causes of this problem and the effects they have on our planet. By
researching, one can determine their impact on the climate, as well as how to reduce this effect. To understand how to fix global climate change, we

It is also thought to be possible that the movement of continents changed the temperature of the land, the air, and the oceans (encyclopedia of science).
These environmental shifts have definitely played a part in atmospheric changes. More recently, however, humans have had a much greater effect on the
earth. This all began in the late 18th century, when the Industrial Revolution was in bloom and there was more need for factories and equipment. The
smog and pollution coming from these buildings was visible to all, and the damages were huge. This altered the composition of the earth's atmosphere
by creating much more carbon dioxide, and quickly had an effect on the global climate (epa.gov). Even though each individual created very little
carbon dioxide, when put together, the United States created a lot. This is put best by Malcolm Gladwell, when he explains "we need to prepare
ourselves for the possibility that sometimes big changes follow from small events and that sometimes these changes can happen very quickly" (11). To
understand how much of an effect humans have had, one must rely on the numbers and the experts. The industrial activities that our modern
civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 379 parts per million in the last 150 years. The
[Intergovernmental] panel [on Climate Change] also concluded there's a better than 90 percent probability that

CHAPTER 3: THE MICRO ENVIRONMENT
MGMT 488 – STRATEGY AND POLICY
OVERVIEW
The micro environmental analysis is the second step in creating the Environmental Analysis. The micro environment examines the general business
climate as it relates to the organization within its industry. The micro environment is also known as Porter's Five Forces of Competition. The macro
environment is primarily concerned with major issues and upcoming changes in the environment. The analysis looks at five areas of interest, which are
1) Power of the Buyers; 2) Power of the Suppliers; 3) Threat of Substitute Products; 4) Threat of New Entrants; and 5) Intensity of Rivalry. Notice in
the following diagram, how these interact and influence each other.
MGMT 488...show more content...
RANKING THE FORCES
Each of the five forces is ranked on a high to low scale, sometimes part of the force is high, but other parts are low. A pet store has many suppliers of
dog toys. Most people do not have a brand preference – as long as the dog likes the toy, it is acceptable. Thus, the supplier power of dog toys is low.
However, the pet store also sells purebred dogs. The most wanted breeds are Labradors and Beagles. There are a small number of breeders in the area.
Thus, the supplier power of dogs is high.

Some people say global warming is caused by human activity, others say global warming doesn't even exist. Some people claim that the climate is
changing for the worse. They believe that humans are the primary cause of these changes, especially the increase in temperature, caused by the burning
of fossil fuels. They believe that the temperature changes are causing glaciers to melt. They claim that the melting of ice masses leads to a higher sea
level and worsening conditions for Arctic animals, as well as other negative effects on the environment. Others do not agree with this. They say that the
climate is not changing at all and that if it is, it is certainly not due to human behavior. The term "global warming" refers to an abnormal, increasing
average temperature of the planet. The average temperature has fluctuated constantly throughout the whole time the Earth has existed, but recently the
climate has changed in ways it has not done earlier, as well as more rapidly than it ever has before. The natural reasons for the climate to change are
still occurring, but with an addition of some thought to be caused by human activities. The primary cause behind the increasing temperature is
according to NASA large amount of greenhouse gases being released into the air when fossil fuels are being burnt. The higher temperatures are said to
cause for example melting glaciers and increased coastal erosion. The melting of ice results in negative changes to the ecosystem of the affected

Reflection On Environmentalism
Thematically based around environmental issues, English 131 strays away from the stereotypical English composition class of overanalyzing classic,
fictional literature, and instead melds the logical power of factual science with the emotional power of writing, to produce a course fit to tackle
present day concerns. While certainly not to knock at typical English language and literature composition classes, as these courses are a boot camp for
strengthening analytical skills and producing complex claims, it was refreshing to take part in a more research based curriculum, especially in a topic
that I had previously little to no experience in. However, while this class is definitely more grounded in research and facts, my previous experiences of
closely analyzing and dealing with theoretical concepts is readily apparent throughout my course writing. As you will soon hopefully notice, the
majority of my work presented in this portfolio deals with the ethics and emotions behind environmentalism. Although my overarching topic is more
conceptual than one would expect in an environmentally driven English class, my arguments and claims are backed with facts and logic, while still
retaining the resonating impact associated with pathos induced writing. The products of this combination–of the weaving together of logos and
pathos–which the curriculum of this class has readily allowed me to do, are carefully crafted, argumentatively sound papers and projects that
demonstrate a proficiency

Caring About Our Environment
Improving and maintaining the earth's environment is becoming a more important task every day of our lives. Due to ignorance and frequent
carelessness, this important task is quickly becoming a critical one. For this reason, I took it upon myself to construct a strategic plan to enlighten my
peers to the problems of our environment. I did this in hopes that it would encourage everyone to act responsibly towards improving and maintaining
the environment. With ongoing threats to the earth's water supply, atmosphere, and surface, I found it necessary to devise a method of environmental

I recently discovered that one cheeseburger takes more than 700 gallons of water to produce (includes water consumed by cows, water used to irrigate
the cornfields that feed the cows, and the water used to produce the beef and cheese). When considering the millions of cheeseburgers that are
consumed worldwide everyday, it is evident that the earth's water supply is declining rapidly. Due to air pollution, theozone layer is also being
consumed at an extreme rate. Its arch nemesis is the various fumes from cars and factories. Scientists estimate that each 1% drop in ozone levels
causes a 3 to 6% rise in skin cancer cases. Since the ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet and other high–energy radiation from penetrating to the
earth's surface, this is a crisis that has to be rectified. The ozone's depletion has dropped to a level so thin that if we brought it down to Earth, it would
only be as deep as the thickness of three dimes. The only positive outlook concerning this matter is that the ozone has the ability to reconstruct itself
when UV–C rays break the bond of O2. Single oxygen atoms combine with O2 to form ozone (UV–B rays limit this process still yet). This evidence
shows that the world is in dire need of an environmental resurrection. In order for this to occur and be successful, it would require an effort by every
individual nation of our world.

Introduction
Environmental science is defined as the study of the environment and the interconnecting systems it contains, furthermore, the way people interact with
their natural surroundings and use natural resources (wise geek, 2013). Scientist in this field is highly interdisciplinary and extremely diverse, for
example, a scientist might study volcanoes or climate change. This essay will cover the following; the definition of environmental science, the
relationship between science and technology and how it affects environmental problems; the concept of environmental sustainability and why it should

Environmental Sustainability
Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping
the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so
important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely preserving the life support systems of the planet
(Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally.
Human Values affecting Society
The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species extinction has remained at one species per million per
year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on earth by
the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period (mindfully.org, 2013). As individuals, we obtain our food, directly
or indirectly from plants, for example, plant our primary use of medicines. Biodiversity also determines the properties of communities and ecosystems,
which capture energy from the sun. The world is less resilient, more homogeneous, less interesting, and with fewer opportunities for our descendants
and ourselves: where the process reaches

Air pollution levels have a large existence in big cities in Indonesia like Jakarta, Bandung, and so on. This problem happens because the number of
motor vehicle use that is not limited [1]. Exhaust smog are the cause of air pollution which has the dangerous effects for people's health. Exhaust smog
is a result of burning fuel oil every motor vehicle. There are two types of burning fuel oil: the first is complete burning [2] and incomplete burning [3].
These types of burning have the differentiation in producing the remainder. Complete burning produces carbon dioxide as a result of remaining while
incomplete burning produces carbon monoxide as a result of the rest. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are gases that are harmful to people's
health and could decrease ozone layer [4] [5]. Exhaust smog is hazardous to people's health. Exhaust smog is a result of burning fuel oil [6].
Consequently, exhaust smog has possibility to contain carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gas. These harmful gases affect human respiration.
Carbon monoxide makes the respiratory system becomes worse. Carbon monoxide will interfere with the process of hemoglobin in breathing [7]. As a
result, people will not only feel lack of oxygen but also often feel dizzy and weak. In the other hand, carbon dioxide causes dizziness and fatigue to the
sufferer [8]. In the prevention and reduction of the impact of exhaust smog, the Indonesian government decided all motor vehicle users have to check

Changes In The Earths Environment Essay
Changes in the Earth's Environment
The 20th century, especially in the second half, has been one of rapid change in the Earth's environment. The impact of humans on the physical form
and functioning of the Earth have reached levels that are global in character, and have done so at an increasingly mounting speed. 20 years ago the
environment was seen as posing a threat to the future of humanity as death rates from natural hazards had increased dramatically since the turn of the
century. The Earth though has always been plagued bynatural disasters. Now, with the world population growing at a rapid rate more people are living
in hazard prone areas.

It is this growing world population, Burton et al
(1978) suggest, that is the main reason behind why hazards are increasing and were seen to pose such a threat to humankind in the 70's. While the
average number of disasters remained relatively constant at about 30 per year, death rates climbed significantly.
As the growing world population requires the cultivation of land more prone to hazards, more people and property are thus exposed to the risk of
disaster than ever before, and as Stow (1992) argues, the death toll inevitably rises. An example that shows the concern that humans faced from the
environment can be exemplified by the Bangladesh cyclone of 1970, which killed approximately
250,000 people. Although part of the reason for so many deaths can be put down to a then poorly understood process, land–use can also be implicated.
Because of a rising population, land in Bangladesh was reclaimed by the government and held against the sea. People in large numbers were then
encouraged to occupy the area.
An area which turned out to be one of great risk. Major disruption was inevitable Burton et al (1978) argue whenever population was in the path of
such forces. Had reasonable measures been taken in advance of the storm, the material damage, loss of life and social dislocation could have been
seriously reduced.
In the 1990's we live in an information age. Today we have remarkable monitoring and predictive capabilities for natural hazards. The use of advanced

Abstract On Environmental Pollution
Abstract
Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any undesired alteration of the environment and is often
caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg. 552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each of
these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting
pollution and to help control the issue. Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning pollution,
which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution, scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by
man–made pollutants until they found air bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential development,
scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back
to Ancient Rome and it was decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous types of pollution and
they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the
same time encourage people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to improve the world and decrease
pollution.
The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution
is the release of pollutants into the air that is damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are two of
them. These two are discussed more when dissecting this problem due to them being the most common forms of air position, which are also the most
detrimental of them all. When the sunlight and emissions from fossil fuels interact that is how smog is created. The creation of soot formed from
smoke, dust, allergens and other particles are spread throughout the air in gas or solid form. Methane is also a huge component of the

Environmental Sociology Essay

  • 1. Environmental Sociology Essay Development processes is connected with environmental degradation and use of natural resources. Rudel et al. (2011) assumes the present of two distinct waves of development power which control environment. The first wave of political economy deals with the power of capitalism as the main agent for environmental degradation, while the second wave concern with the social power (community) to control the use of natural resources. In this first wave scenario, the idea is that capitalism is a significant power for shaping the performance of environment. IPAT/STIRPAT Theory proposes that capitalism is the cause for environment degradation because ––in combination with rapid population growth and affluence (prosperity)–– they altogether...show more content... (2011) provides examples of this theory by pointing the heavy industrial production in East Asia and former socialist countries after World War II. Principally, Treadmill Production Theory do not consider population and affluent as significant factor for environmental degradation, and put more emphasis on the issue of technology as the main contributor for the decrease of environmental quality. Both the IPAT/STIRPAT and Treadmill Production theories overlook the condition "behind the scene", why the technology exists in the process of development. In other words, these theories do not consider the social actors which are responsible for the present of this technology. Indeed, the coercion of capital to exploit natural resources is possible only because it is supported by the conglomeration of powerful social actors behind it. According to Growth Machine Theories, syndication of vested interests (government, land owners, developers, real estate companies), which often claim themselves as "pro–growth" coalition, encourages local development through real estate business activities, while excluding the interest local population who previously occupy the sites for years (Rudel et al., 2011). Huge commercial farming scheme for the sake of development in rural areas is other typical of the oppression from outside of the local community which tries to stick the capital into certain local areas (). Since local community usually has no systematic organization to balance Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Globalization and the Environment Essay examples Economy is not a separate thing from production, consumption and exchange. Economics pays no attention to goods and services provided by nature, air, water, soil and sunlight that produce everything we need for survival and all the riches we are able to accumulate. What is the cost of globalization to the environment? Does globalization have the same goals for a healthy planet and justice for people? Timothy Taylor writes, "Moreover, largemultinational companies typically do not perceive it to be in their self–interest to seek out locations where they can pollute most heavily." He goes on to explain that these companies have a design in place with pollution–control that meets the standards of countries with strict environmental laws....show more content... However, Timothy Taylor points to globalization contributing to the "churning of the labor market as people move in and out of jobs." Thomas Grennes writes, "Opposition to globalization has taken the form of policies designed to protect traditional jobs, but these jobs can be preserved only by giving up economic growth that generates creative destruction." He defines Creative destruction as, "Innovations that stimulate general economic growth simultaneously destroy specific jobs as emerging technologies replace older technologies." Christopher Bright brings up the fact that pathogens, plants, insects, fish and mammals are being inadvertently transported from their native habitats to invade non–native territories. Bioinvasion is a result of international trade. Examples of this include invasive exotic weeds in Colorado, Formosan termites in the southeastern United States, Atlantic coastline native comb jelly in the Black Sea, and the Asian wood–boring beetle established in eastern North America. According to Bright, "Real damage is occurring on a more fundamental, biological level: in grasslands, forests, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Personal Statement For Environmental Engineering Preserving the environment is one of the most critical issues we are facing today. How we act now will determine the fate of future generations. What really inspired me to consider environmental engineering as a profession was my Advanced Placement Environmental Science class in high school – it opened my eyes to global issues such as overpopulation, loss of biodiversity, inefficient energy sources, irresponsible waste disposal, etc.– and it motivated me to want to do something about it. What I want to ultimately accomplish in this field of work is facilitate the growth of the use of renewable energy sources, support responsible population reduction initiatives, and develop agricultural practices that ensure food and water security for every single person on the planet. The nature of the work varies depend on what one wants to specialize in. Many engineers work in office settings (with a great deal of operational record keeping, paperwork, and technical reports), but it often requires hands–on work and on–site oversight, especially when working in construction, ecosystem remediation, natural resource cultivation, or waste management. Oftentimes, engineers work over 40 hours a week in order to meet deadlines and finish all their tasks. On average, daily face–to–face, email, and telephone communication, and group collaboration with contractors, staff, and clients are necessary for careers offered to environmental engineers. At the same time, independent work is emphasized. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. With the increasingly growing concern of climate change and its impact on the environment, it is reasonable to ask how the environment will affect Earth 's living organisms, from the small to the big (Freitas et al., 2015). Fish are poikilothermic organisms, meaning their body temperature is susceptible to and easily influenced by external environmental changes. The metabolic rate, defined as the total chemical activity in an organism, also changes with body temperature (Pfluegl 2014). These factors make fish a simple subject to conduct experiments with in regards to the effects in one area of climate change: the rise of sea temperature (Freitas et al., 2015). The increase of temperature may affect fish behavior, as well as diet, migration, and other demands that require energy (Johnston et al., 1987). The effects could ultimately permeate into the ecosystem 's function and by consequence, humanity (Walberg 2011). This small scale experiment sought to observe the effect of warm temperature on the metabolic activity of goldfish via the measurement of the concentration of oxygen the fish consumed. The experiment tested the null hypothesis that increasing the water temperature of a goldfish 's environment does not have a significant effect on the metabolism rate of the goldfish. Methods and Materials: In order to measure the oxygen consumption rate in goldfish, a small oxygen chamber was used to conduct the experiment. The chamber had a built–in probe that provided a updated Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My Love Of The Environment I have always been concerned about the environment. In elementary school, I made posters encouraging students to recycle and hung them up everywhere. I organized my first protest when I was nine. My best friend and I made picket signs to object the trimming of trees on our street. I didn't realize at the time it was to protect the power lines, but the good intentions were there. My concern for protecting the environment (and every tree on the street) has only grown stronger as I've grown up; now, I'm choosing to major in Environmental Studies because I know that the environment is all we have. Humans are fully dependent on natural resources, but we continue to overfish oceans, chop down rainforests, and use harmful practices like fracking to extract oil from the earth. We're so focused on short term financial gains that we forget the fact that our environment influences our entire lives; every poor choice we make now will spiral out to impact future generations. I want to major in environmental studies so that I can better understand the complex relationships between humans and the environment, and find ways for humans to take care of the environment instead of exploiting it. My love of the environment has always been supported by my strong interest in politics. I am especially drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of this major; to solve environmental issues, it is necessary to understand politics, economics, and human nature. I want to have a job where I can make a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Global Warming and Climate Change Essay Global warming and the greenhouse effect are issues discussed by scientists all the time. A natural process that keeps earths temperature at a livable rate is called the greenhouse effect. The energy from the sun warms up the earth when the rays from the sun are absorbed by greenhouse gasses. The gasses then become trapped in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide are the most common greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gases cause the radiant heat of the sun to be trapped in the Earths lower atmosphere which causes global warming. If there weren't any greenhouse gasses, the earth would be really cold due to very little sun rays being absorbed on the earth. Global warming can and...show more content... Every time the temperature keeps rising, the more carbon dioxide will be released. When this process gets going, it is very hard to keep in control. Methane is another greenhouse gas. Methane is a greenhouse gas whose molecules absorb heat trying to escape to space. Natural sources include wetlands, swamps and marshes, termites, and oceans. (Methane) Methane gases are released into the atmosphere. Atmospheric methane has doubled since the Industrial Revolution and has "contributed 20 percent to the enhancement of the greenhouse effect, second only to carbon dioxide". (Methane) A major effect of global warming is there will be higher temperatures and it will affect how the water cycle works. Places on the earth will receive more rain than others. There will be a great amount of evaporation going on from the rivers, lakes and oceans due to a increase in the temperature. This could be a good thing for some people needing rain and a bad thing for other people who get to much rain. While the temperature is on the rise there will be greater amount of rains all over. In return with all of the rains this could help farmers. It would extend the growing season for crops. This would greatly help out the farmers because they would be making more money. While this is the positive side of the rain, this could also hurt the farmers. There are some crops that out there that will die with to much rain. There Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Importance Of Protecting The Environment Essay Our environment undoubtedly has many things we can use to benefit our everyday lives. Even if our environment is not in tip–top shape, we need to start taking care of it better. If we don't many things will happen. These things include plants dying, animals going extinct, air becoming polluted, coral reefs dying, and water rapidly coming contaminated. Another problem our environment has to face, overcome, or adapt too is Global Warming. Global Warming has and will continue to impact our environment worldwide if we do not begin taking immediate action and do something to protect our environment. Protecting our environment is indeed the first action that should be taken. Protecting the environment should take place locally and globally in my opinion. There are many things that our local environment could do that would have have a tremendous impact on our environment that genuinely would not take oodles of effort. A few of these could be as easy as recycling soda cans, old school or work papers, and glass bottles and taking them to a local recycling center. When you recycle you are reusing things or making them into new things. Two more examples would be hosting or participating in a highway clean up, or planting a community garden at a park. Globally, humans are responsible for Greenhouse Gasses, pollution, and fossil fuel shortages. Globally, if everyone pitched in just a little bit, greenhouse gas emissions could go down drastically. The way we could cut these emissions Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Macro environment Essays Macro environment, one of the three key elements of the marketing environment explains the influences of broader societal forces. These major external forces are not controllable, but being aware of the environmental factors and its changes will be of great advantage for growing the business (Angela, 2012). In the travel business, the operation does not depend only on the internal functioning but is also affected by external factors. Wotif is also affected by these internal and external factors. Macro environmental analysis is needed for Wotif to achieve their goals, increase their profit and improve their current strategies. Political factors: Political factors hugely affect the tourism business. It is important to analyse the political...show more content... Despite the strong dollar, number of visitors from China has increased rapidly. China in Asia contributed to 17.3% of international expenditure in the financial year 2013–2014. Though, Wotif's performance in the Asian market has been lacklustre. It posted a lower profit this financial year due its under performing Asian business continuing to drag on earnings (O'Sullivan, 2013) These economic factors will influence the tourism arena in the new financial year. Socio–cultural factors: Australians are known for their love to travel and exploring new things. Australians are among the biggest–spending travellers in the world, second only to Saudi Arabians. Despite the fall of the dollar, Australians are showing no signs of changing their ''have passport, will travel'' mentality (Upe, 2013) St George–Melbourne Institute reported that nearly 60 per cent of Australians nominated holidays and travel as a key motivation for saving money, ahead of a deposit for a house, renovating, retirement, education, repaying debts, buying a new car or an expensive item for the house (Upe, 2013) During Christmas, Australians are now spending on Christmas holidays instead of buying gifts. Travellers are more inclined to head overseas at Christmas than they were last year (Swallow, 2013) In 2014–2015, Australia will be seen hosting major events including the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Passion for Environment Carson and Quinn's passion for environment I believe the level of attention given to saving the environment is extremely low. Humans don't seem to be concerned all that about the environment. We are taking advantage of the environment for our own selfish reasons, and don't realize the consequences. Maybe if we just had enough knowledge about the environment, or if we just changed our way of thinking, things could be different. However it's still not too late, we can make a difference for people who live in this lifetime, and for people who will live in this world after us. Our children, and grant children. • 10. Climate Change Impacts and Threats Essay Global climate change, most commonly referred to as global warming, is a worldwide problem facing our environment. Global climate change is simply a rise or fall in Earth's temperature over a period of time. Although this problem has natural causes, the true detriments come from humans and how we live day to day. Although many people have heard ofclimate change, there is not a big effort to fix this problem or to understand it. The best way to rectify this change to the environment is to help others recognize the causes of this problem and the effects they have on our planet. By researching, one can determine their impact on the climate, as well as how to reduce this effect. To understand how to fix global climate change, we must first...show more content... It is also thought to be possible that the movement of continents changed the temperature of the land, the air, and the oceans (encyclopedia of science). These environmental shifts have definitely played a part in atmospheric changes. More recently, however, humans have had a much greater effect on the earth. This all began in the late 18th century, when the Industrial Revolution was in bloom and there was more need for factories and equipment. The smog and pollution coming from these buildings was visible to all, and the damages were huge. This altered the composition of the earth's atmosphere by creating much more carbon dioxide, and quickly had an effect on the global climate (epa.gov). Even though each individual created very little carbon dioxide, when put together, the United States created a lot. This is put best by Malcolm Gladwell, when he explains "we need to prepare ourselves for the possibility that sometimes big changes follow from small events and that sometimes these changes can happen very quickly" (11). To understand how much of an effect humans have had, one must rely on the numbers and the experts. The industrial activities that our modern civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 379 parts per million in the last 150 years. The [Intergovernmental] panel [on Climate Change] also concluded there's a better than 90 percent probability that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Micro Environment CHAPTER 3: THE MICRO ENVIRONMENT MGMT 488 – STRATEGY AND POLICY OVERVIEW The micro environmental analysis is the second step in creating the Environmental Analysis. The micro environment examines the general business climate as it relates to the organization within its industry. The micro environment is also known as Porter's Five Forces of Competition. The macro environment is primarily concerned with major issues and upcoming changes in the environment. The analysis looks at five areas of interest, which are 1) Power of the Buyers; 2) Power of the Suppliers; 3) Threat of Substitute Products; 4) Threat of New Entrants; and 5) Intensity of Rivalry. Notice in the following diagram, how these interact and influence each other. MGMT 488...show more content... RANKING THE FORCES Each of the five forces is ranked on a high to low scale, sometimes part of the force is high, but other parts are low. A pet store has many suppliers of dog toys. • 13. Some people say global warming is caused by human activity, others say global warming doesn't even exist. Some people claim that the climate is changing for the worse. They believe that humans are the primary cause of these changes, especially the increase in temperature, caused by the burning of fossil fuels. They believe that the temperature changes are causing glaciers to melt. They claim that the melting of ice masses leads to a higher sea level and worsening conditions for Arctic animals, as well as other negative effects on the environment. Others do not agree with this. They say that the climate is not changing at all and that if it is, it is certainly not due to human behavior. The term "global warming" refers to an abnormal, increasing average temperature of the planet. The average temperature has fluctuated constantly throughout the whole time the Earth has existed, but recently the climate has changed in ways it has not done earlier, as well as more rapidly than it ever has before. The natural reasons for the climate to change are still occurring, but with an addition of some thought to be caused by human activities. The primary cause behind the increasing temperature is according to NASA large amount of greenhouse gases being released into the air when fossil fuels are being burnt. The higher temperatures are said to cause for example melting glaciers and increased coastal erosion. The melting of ice results in negative changes to the ecosystem of the affected Get more content on HelpWriting.net

A clean environment is very necessary to live a peaceful and healthy life. An environment is the natural surroundings which help life to grow and nourish on this earth. It helps human beings, animals and other living things to grow and develop naturally. But now days, our everyday actions and decisions are negatively impacting the environment, causing pollution, deforestation, overfishing. We are disturbing our environment in many ways which affecting not only the environment but all living beings. Any type of disturbance in the nature's balance affects the environment totally which ruins the human lives. Ever since the first human beings, there has...show more content... All across the world, people are facing challenging environmental problems every day. Global warming is the biggest problem that our planet is facing right now. It is one of the most current and widely discussed problem. In short, global warming represents a fundamental threat to all living things on earth.Climate changes like global warming is the result of human practices like emission of greenhouse gases. Global warming leads to rising temperatures of the oceans and the earth surface causing melting of polar ice caps, rise in sea levels and also lead to natural disaster such as flash floods and desertification. A decade ago, global warming was not much of a concern as it is now. No matter how much we are informed about it , we as a society seem to ignore the future disasters that global warming will acquire. Global warming is a "global" dilemma and everyone has an obligation to help reduce emissions. Human influence has always been a very serious issue to Global warming. We as human are not taking care of the earth. Human influence to this global warming is more than the natural causes .The earth has been changing for many years until now it is still changing because of modern lifestyle of human. Human activities include industrial production, gas emission, burning fossil fuel and deforestation. Gas emissions from factories and exhaust fumes from Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Reflection On Environmentalism Thematically based around environmental issues, English 131 strays away from the stereotypical English composition class of overanalyzing classic, fictional literature, and instead melds the logical power of factual science with the emotional power of writing, to produce a course fit to tackle present day concerns. While certainly not to knock at typical English language and literature composition classes, as these courses are a boot camp for strengthening analytical skills and producing complex claims, it was refreshing to take part in a more research based curriculum, especially in a topic that I had previously little to no experience in. However, while this class is definitely more grounded in research and facts, my previous experiences of closely analyzing and dealing with theoretical concepts is readily apparent throughout my course writing. As you will soon hopefully notice, the majority of my work presented in this portfolio deals with the ethics and emotions behind environmentalism. Although my overarching topic is more conceptual than one would expect in an environmentally driven English class, my arguments and claims are backed with facts and logic, while still retaining the resonating impact associated with pathos induced writing. The products of this combination–of the weaving together of logos and pathos–which the curriculum of this class has readily allowed me to do, are carefully crafted, argumentatively sound papers and projects that demonstrate a proficiency Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Caring About Our Environment Essay Caring About Our Environment Improving and maintaining the earth's environment is becoming a more important task every day of our lives. Due to ignorance and frequent carelessness, this important task is quickly becoming a critical one. For this reason, I took it upon myself to construct a strategic plan to enlighten my peers to the problems of our environment. I did this in hopes that it would encourage everyone to act responsibly towards improving and maintaining the environment. With ongoing threats to the earth's water supply, atmosphere, and surface, I found it necessary to devise a method of environmental enlightenment. I plan to apply this method at my place of academic study, The University. If supported by the faculty...show more content... I recently discovered that one cheeseburger takes more than 700 gallons of water to produce (includes water consumed by cows, water used to irrigate the cornfields that feed the cows, and the water used to produce the beef and cheese). When considering the millions of cheeseburgers that are consumed worldwide everyday, it is evident that the earth's water supply is declining rapidly. Due to air pollution, theozone layer is also being consumed at an extreme rate. Its arch nemesis is the various fumes from cars and factories. Scientists estimate that each 1% drop in ozone levels causes a 3 to 6% rise in skin cancer cases. Since the ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet and other high–energy radiation from penetrating to the earth's surface, this is a crisis that has to be rectified. The ozone's depletion has dropped to a level so thin that if we brought it down to Earth, it would only be as deep as the thickness of three dimes. The only positive outlook concerning this matter is that the ozone has the ability to reconstruct itself when UV–C rays break the bond of O2. Single oxygen atoms combine with O2 to form ozone (UV–B rays limit this process still yet). This evidence shows that the world is in dire need of an environmental resurrection. In order for this to occur and be successful, it would require an effort by every individual nation of our world. My resolution requires that The University of South Carolina Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Environmental Science Essay Environmental Fundamentals Laura Jackson Env/100 April 8, 2013 JOHN ENSWORTH Environmental Fundamentals Introduction Environmental science is defined as the study of the environment and the interconnecting systems it contains, furthermore, the way people interact with their natural surroundings and use natural resources (wise geek, 2013). Scientist in this field is highly interdisciplinary and extremely diverse, for example, a scientist might study volcanoes or climate change. This essay will cover the following; the definition of environmental science, the relationship between science and technology and how it affects environmental problems; the concept of environmental sustainability and why it should be studied; how human...show more content... Environmental Sustainability Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely preserving the life support systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally. Human Values affecting Society The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species extinction has remained at one species per million per year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on earth by the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period (mindfully.org, 2013). As individuals, we obtain our food, directly or indirectly from plants, for example, plant our primary use of medicines. Biodiversity also determines the properties of communities and ecosystems, which capture energy from the sun. The world is less resilient, more homogeneous, less interesting, and with fewer opportunities for our descendants

Nature was created to help people survive from gathering foods until build a house. This phenomenon happens continuously without thinking how much damage that nature has because human's fault. Nature gradually becomes worse and animal's life in danger. People who are aware of the importance of nature react. Those people do several ways to save the environment. Although these efforts can return back the environment, these efforts only can be hold temporarily. This problem happens because those people who are aware of the environment only slightly; for remaining, there are people either do not know or do not care about the nature. This problem happens because the number of motor vehicle use that is not limited [1]. Exhaust smog are the cause of air pollution which has the dangerous effects for people's health. Exhaust smog is a result of burning fuel oil every motor vehicle. There are two types of burning fuel oil: the first is complete burning [2] and incomplete burning [3]. These types of burning have the differentiation in producing the remainder. Complete burning produces carbon dioxide as a result of remaining while incomplete burning produces carbon monoxide as a result of the rest. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are gases that are harmful to people's health and could decrease ozone layer [4] [5]. As a result, people will not only feel lack of oxygen but also often feel dizzy and weak. In the other hand, carbon dioxide causes dizziness and fatigue to the sufferer [8]. In the prevention and reduction of the impact of exhaust smog, the Indonesian government decided all motor vehicle users have to check Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Changes In The Earths Environment Essay Changes in the Earth's Environment The 20th century, especially in the second half, has been one of rapid change in the Earth's environment. The impact of humans on the physical form and functioning of the Earth have reached levels that are global in character, and have done so at an increasingly mounting speed. 20 years ago the environment was seen as posing a threat to the future of humanity as death rates from natural hazards had increased dramatically since the turn of the century. The Earth though has always been plagued bynatural disasters. Now, with the world population growing at a rapid rate more people are living in hazard prone areas. Events which may have gone unnoticed previously, only become hazards when there is...show more content... It is this growing world population, Burton et al (1978) suggest, that is the main reason behind why hazards are increasing and were seen to pose such a threat to humankind in the 70's. While the average number of disasters remained relatively constant at about 30 per year, death rates climbed significantly. As the growing world population requires the cultivation of land more prone to hazards, more people and property are thus exposed to the risk of disaster than ever before, and as Stow (1992) argues, the death toll inevitably rises. An example that shows the concern that humans faced from the environment can be exemplified by the Bangladesh cyclone of 1970, which killed approximately 250,000 people. Although part of the reason for so many deaths can be put down to a then poorly understood process, land–use can also be implicated. Because of a rising population, land in Bangladesh was reclaimed by the government and held against the sea. People in large numbers were then encouraged to occupy the area. An area which turned out to be one of great risk. Major disruption was inevitable Burton et al (1978) argue whenever population was in the path of such forces. Had reasonable measures been taken in advance of the storm, the material damage, loss of life and social dislocation could have been seriously reduced. In the 1990's we live in an information age. Today we have remarkable monitoring and predictive capabilities for natural hazards. The use of advanced Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Abstract On Environmental Pollution Abstract Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any undesired alteration of the environment and is often caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg. 552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each of these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting pollution and to help control the issue. Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning pollution, which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution, scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by man–made pollutants until they found air bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential development, scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back to Ancient Rome and it was decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous types of pollution and they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the same time encourage people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to improve the world and decrease pollution. The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that is damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are two of them. These two are discussed more when dissecting this problem due to them being the most common forms of air position, which are also the most detrimental of them all. When the sunlight and emissions from fossil fuels interact that is how smog is created. The creation of soot formed from smoke, dust, allergens and other particles are spread throughout the air in gas or solid form. Methane is also a huge component of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
