Assessment overview
Introduction
This assessment requires you to complete the progress
challenges described in the learning modules that show
seven parts or stages of development in creating graph-
ic designs for 2-D (print) and 3-D (installation / signage)
based on a given scenario.
The design scenario
The hypothetical scenario involves your acquisition of
a suitable office space to establish your graphic design
studio.You want the reception area to attract, inform
and showcase your business through the creation of
at least one 2-D based (print, posters) artwork and at
least one 3-D based (signage, installation or fixtures)
artwork.You are not required to have your designs
fabricated or printed by professional companies.
Choose an image of a reception area to help you
conceptualise what you need to do.The design of the
interior and furnishing is not the focus.
File naming
Once you feel confident that you have covered the
learning materials for this unit, you are ready to at-
tempt this assessment.
To help Open Colleges manage your assessment, please

Assessment submission
When you are ready to submit your assessment, upload

Assessment Part A – Formalising the design brief

Activity Progress challenge 1: Formalising the de-
sign brief
This progress challenge requires you to create a formal design brief for the
hypothetical scenario that requires you to design at least one graphic element
/ artwork that will be a 2-D / print and one graphic element that will be a 3-D
installation or signage.
The formal design brief must include the following:
•	 	 The communication objectives of the project and the audience it is try-
ing to target.
•	 	 The technical requirements of the project describing the delivery and
output specifications, and the resources (time and budget) it may need to
be completed.
•	 	 The creative requirements of the project describing the style and envi-
ronmental considerations for the 2-D and 3-D artwork.
Answer
Sedgie Art is a dynamic studio situated in the heart of Sydney, which seeks to
make its presence felt wherever it goes. The motto for Sedgie Art is ‘A Piece
of my Art’, and products are available online through Red Bubble, Café Press
andVistaprint. They also advertise via Facebook,LinkedIn,YouTube,and Google.
Requirements
3D outdoor signage
I would most likely choose a hanging wooden frame on a bracket attached to
the outside of the shopfront. For glass windows, I would choose a window
decal, which may be either vinyl or frosted glass.
Indoor/corporate signage
Office/reception area and shopfront
For the wall, I would put up a decal (of the paint tube) or have it silk-screened
and made into a canvas frame backed onto a wooden frame, and then glued to
the wall. For the front of the desk, the letters may be carved into the wood
panelling, or silk-screened.
2D items
These include stationery, and online displays of the logo. The outputs of the
logos are either RGB for web and email, and CYMK for print design (say, on
letters, postcards and other print items). Colour scheme is either black and
white, or mostly blue.
Time frame and budget
3D outdoor signage and display
Manufacture of signage: 20 hours x $75 per hour = $1,500
Installation: 5 hours x $60 per hour = $300
Indoor signage
Picture frame: $100-200 (if not more); vinyl decals – roughly $125 per metre;
Cladding: 20 hours x $75 per hour = $1,500
Installation: 8 hours x $60 per hour = $480
Printing: Stationery: up to $200.
Time limit
Up to three months, and a budget of up to $5,180

Activity Progress challenge 2: Feedback and col-
laboration
This progress challenge requires you to collaborate and get feedback from
other professionals, facilities, peers, and design communities that would allow
you to address the technical and creative specifications of your 2-D and 3-D
based designs.You need to complete the following:
•	 	 A list of companies, professionals, printing and fabrication companies
and peers that you need to collaborate with for your project. Explain why
you would need their help and collaboration in order for your project to
be fully realised.
•	 	 Two clear screen shots of at least two separate posts in an online de-
sign community you signed up with to get feedback on your 2-D and 3-D
designs.

These would include the following companies (that manufacture 2D and 3D
designs):

: this company is a building company using pylon, mono-
lith and acrylic signage – most of which is for outdoor installations, though
they state on their website they can also do indoor, as well as outdoor,

porate signage, and is probably more suitable for office and commercial

Hi Colleen,
Thanks for the feedback.
Your design looks good, using the tube of paint is a good idea as it reflects
the name of the business and what’s it’s about. I love the three indoor and the
bottom outdoor logo designs.
However, I would change the top outdoor oval shaped sign design and replace
it with the indoor logo design, because the signage is ‘roundish’ and having
everything going across in a straight line makes the logo design and the words
look smaller and hard to notice. If you use the indoor logo layout in the oval
sign, it will not only fill up the white space in the sign but also make the busi-
ness name bigger, and customers would be able to see the sign better.
Overall I think that the design is fantastic!

Thanks Lakeia,
I thought maybe the oval outdoor sign would
be suitable for an old building with 'classic'
architecture like you find in inner-city Sydney
(or Melbourne) for instance, either the CBD
or Inner West. But I can see how the text can
look a bit too small.

This progress challenge requires you to provide written and visual evidence
of the project management and planning processes you used in creating your
2-D and 3-D based artwork.These include the following:
•	 	 One visible and clear snapshot or scan of a task list created using an
online project management tool or some other method.
•	 	 One visible and clear snapshot or scan of a budget created using an
online project management tool or some other method.
•	 	 One visible and clear snapshot or scan of project schedule or timeline
created using an online project management tool or some other method.
•	 	 A brief report explaining the importance of project management pro-
cesses and tools in implementing your 2-D and 3-D based project.
	
Answer
•	 The task list and/or schedule were created using Microsoft Outlook (Out-
look.com) – this email program and calendar is for scheduling tasks and
timelines; and for marking off items on a checklist (see right).
•	 A project checklist can also be created using Microsoft Word or One
Note, and a budget with Excel.
•	 Another alternative is MYOB – an accounting and payroll software pack-
age like Excel.
Project management is important for ensuring things get done:
•	 setting up appointments with important people;
•	 drawing up schedules
•	 budgeting for time and money
•	 Ensuring that a budget and time frame are adhered to.

This feedback on both my 2D and 3D mock-ups (both ‘before’ and ‘after’)
affirmed my perception that the design format with the image above the text
worked best for most outputs;
and that that it worked better for the oval shaped outdoor sign than did the
text beside the image.

•	 	 Collate parts A–G into a single ZIP file comprised of 7 PDFs.

Answer
•	 Creative and technical objectives – yes: I had a fair idea as to what I
wanted for my 2D and 3D works (i.e. business stationery and studio) so I
didn’t have to think too much. This included coming up with mock ups of
the items via Photosuite and Photoshop.
•	 While I basically have the gist of creating items using these software pack-
ages (Adobe Creative Suite and similar items), I know there is still room
for improvement.
•	 I would like to learn beyond the software packages beyond Photoshop,
Illustrator and InDesign, particularly in the areas of 3D design and motion
graphics.
•	 Communication skills – not yet, I am still waiting to hear from my suppli-
ers; however, I had no trouble in gaining feedback from my peers (class-
mates).

Assessment overview Introduction This assessment requires you to complete the progress challenges described in the learning modules that show seven parts or stages of development in creating graph- ic designs for 2-D (print) and 3-D (installation / signage) based on a given scenario. The design scenario The hypothetical scenario involves your acquisition of a suitable office space to establish your graphic design studio.You want the reception area to attract, inform and showcase your business through the creation of at least one 2-D based (print, posters) artwork and at least one 3-D based (signage, installation or fixtures) artwork.You are not required to have your designs fabricated or printed by professional companies. Choose an image of a reception area to help you conceptualise what you need to do.The design of the interior and furnishing is not the focus. File naming Once you feel confident that you have covered the learning materials for this unit, you are ready to at- tempt this assessment. To help Open Colleges manage your assessment, please use the following file-naming convention: [student number]_[assessment]_[assessment number].doc for example 12345678_21850a_01.doc. Elements and critical as- pects Assessment for this unit of compe- tency is comprised of: CUVGRD502A Produce graphic designs for 2-D and 3-D applications You will be assessed on your under- standing of the following: • interpret briefs for 2-D and 3-D work • collaborate and liaise with others • develop and present ideas for 2-D and 3-D work • plan and organise the production of work • realise 2-D and 3-D designs • finalise artwork • Evaluate own work. You must demonstrate the ability to: • produce a body of graphic design work that meets the creative and technical requirements of a range of design briefs, including both 2-D and 3-D work • demonstrate a well-developed command of techniques, processes and current technologies • take account of industry required timeframes for design work • Evaluate and communicate about own work in an informed and critical way. • present written information to support graphic design work • Apply knowledge of the design process.
  • 3. Assessment Part A – Formalising the design brief Nature of task: Report Word count: 250 Required You are required to complete Progress challenge 1. Recommended • Complete all activities • Engage in forum discussion • Summary • Save your final work as a PDF for final submission. Activity Progress challenge 1: Formalising the de- sign brief This progress challenge requires you to create a formal design brief for the hypothetical scenario that requires you to design at least one graphic element / artwork that will be a 2-D / print and one graphic element that will be a 3-D installation or signage. The formal design brief must include the following: • The communication objectives of the project and the audience it is try- ing to target. • The technical requirements of the project describing the delivery and output specifications, and the resources (time and budget) it may need to be completed. • The creative requirements of the project describing the style and envi- ronmental considerations for the 2-D and 3-D artwork. Answer Sedgie Art is a dynamic studio situated in the heart of Sydney, which seeks to make its presence felt wherever it goes. The motto for Sedgie Art is ‘A Piece of my Art’, and products are available online through Red Bubble, Café Press andVistaprint. They also advertise via Facebook,LinkedIn,YouTube,and Google. Requirements 3D outdoor signage I would most likely choose a hanging wooden frame on a bracket attached to the outside of the shopfront. For glass windows, I would choose a window decal, which may be either vinyl or frosted glass. Indoor/corporate signage Office/reception area and shopfront For the wall, I would put up a decal (of the paint tube) or have it silk-screened and made into a canvas frame backed onto a wooden frame, and then glued to the wall. For the front of the desk, the letters may be carved into the wood panelling, or silk-screened. 2D items These include stationery, and online displays of the logo. The outputs of the logos are either RGB for web and email, and CYMK for print design (say, on letters, postcards and other print items). Colour scheme is either black and white, or mostly blue. Time frame and budget 3D outdoor signage and display Manufacture of signage: 20 hours x $75 per hour = $1,500 Installation: 5 hours x $60 per hour = $300 Indoor signage Picture frame: $100-200 (if not more); vinyl decals – roughly $125 per metre; Cladding: 20 hours x $75 per hour = $1,500 Installation: 8 hours x $60 per hour = $480 Printing: Stationery: up to $200. Time limit Up to three months, and a budget of up to $5,180

Recommended • Complete all activities • Engage in forum discussion • Summary • Save your final work as a PDF for final submission. Activity Progress challenge 2: Feedback and col- laboration This progress challenge requires you to collaborate and get feedback from other professionals, facilities, peers, and design communities that would allow you to address the technical and creative specifications of your 2-D and 3-D based designs.You need to complete the following: • A list of companies, professionals, printing and fabrication companies and peers that you need to collaborate with for your project. Explain why you would need their help and collaboration in order for your project to be fully realised. • Two clear screen shots of at least two separate posts in an online de- sign community you signed up with to get feedback on your 2-D and 3-D designs. Answer These would include the following companies (that manufacture 2D and 3D designs): • Skope Group1 : this company is a building company using pylon, mono- lith and acrylic signage – most of which is for outdoor installations, though they state on their website they can also do indoor, as well as outdoor, cladding 2 . Your design looks good, using the tube of paint is a good idea as it reflects the name of the business and what’s it’s about. I love the three indoor and the bottom outdoor logo designs. However, I would change the top outdoor oval shaped sign design and replace it with the indoor logo design, because the signage is ‘roundish’ and having everything going across in a straight line makes the logo design and the words look smaller and hard to notice. If you use the indoor logo layout in the oval sign, it will not only fill up the white space in the sign but also make the busi- ness name bigger, and customers would be able to see the sign better. Answer • Creative and technical objectives – yes: I had a fair idea as to what I wanted for my 2D and 3D works (i.e. business stationery and studio) so I didn’t have to think too much. This included coming up with mock ups of the items via Photosuite and Photoshop. • While I basically have the gist of creating items using these software pack- ages (Adobe Creative Suite and similar items), I know there is still room for improvement. • I would like to learn beyond the software packages beyond Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, particularly in the areas of 3D design and motion graphics. • Communication skills – not yet, I am still waiting to hear from my suppli- ers; however, I had no trouble in gaining feedback from my peers (class- mates).
