India formally became the 43rd member of the Australia Group on January 19, 2018. The Australia Group is a voluntary group of countries working to prevent the spread of materials, equipment and technologies that could contribute to chemical and biological weapons. India's membership was strongly supported at the 2017 Australia Group Plenary and after consensus was reached, India reaffirmed its intention to join. Other members welcomed India and recognized its commitment to aligning its export control system with the Australia Group to contribute to preventing chemical and biological weapon proliferation. India said its entry would benefit all members and support non-proliferation objectives, and that its export control system allows it to implement Australia Group guidelines and lists.
