This project aims to transfer best practices in asset management and modular wastewater treatment solutions between Central European countries. It focuses on integrated water supply and wastewater services tailored to local resources and stakeholder expectations. The project provides knowledge on optimizing costs, risks, and performance through standards implementation. It also promotes wastewater as a source of energy, nutrients, and water reuse. The project uses workshops, conferences, webinars and support sessions to share knowledge on topics like modular design and asset management.

AIM
This project aims to transfer best-practice based experience and innovation in asset
management together with flexible and modular wastewater treatment solutions. These
solutions will be adapted to local circumstances, targeted at integrated water supply and
wastewater service, and based on available resources. Best-practice experience provides
knowledge in optimizing value that reflects a mix of stakeholders and their expectations,
while optimizing trade-offs between short- and long-term goals. The overarching challenge
is to optimize the balance between costs, risks, and performance. Existing standards set
standards but do not describe how to implement those since that depends on the local
context. This project provides ”the how”.
WaterLEAP provides also a change in perspective from wastewater as a residual to a source
of energy (biogas), nutrient recovery, and diversified water re-use (potable and non-potable
water streams).
Environmental sustainability will be visible in cleaner and more energy efficient water
treatment processes and services. Economic and social sustainability will be noticeable in
affordable and fair water services.
HOW
WaterLEAP has a continuous and blended learning and knowledge-transferring approach: it
combines interactive workshops and focused conferences with distance-learning webinars
and individual/group-wise support sessions on demand-based specific topics.
Topics likely to be addressed are: modular building design and building methods, integral
asset management for small and large water suppliers, public procurement for innovation,
and many more.
