Memorial Day or Decoration Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the
United States for remembering the
people who dies while serving in the
country’s armed forces. The holiday,
which is currently observed every year
on the last Monday of May, will be held
on May 28, 2018. May people visit
cemeteries and memorials, particularly
to honor those who have dies in military
service. Many volunteers place an
American flag on each grave in national
cemeteries.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with
Veterans Day – Memorial Day is a day of
remembering the men and women who
dies while serving, whereas Veterans
Day celebrates the service of all U.S.
military veterans.
• Alert fellow workers of
the near miss so that
everyone can be aware to
prevent accidents.
• Talk to your supervisor
about what can be done
to inform and solve the
cause of the near miss so
that the workplace can be
safer.
• Understand that
reporting a near miss will
not get you in trouble
since it is better to report
a near miss before an
accident actually happens
and someone gets hurt.
A “Near Miss” is an event that
could have caused serious injury
or illness – but didn’t.
Example: A forkli operator drives
too fast and drops the load, almost
hing another worker.
How to react in the event of a
“Near Miss”
• Acknowledge the near miss
and how the situaon
could have ended much
worse.

A litle market research and a
litle customer blending opens
up a new applicaon into
evolving markets for Pioneer
sand. Tradionally, the
primary purpose of sand
producon at Pioneer
Materials was for Concrete,
Hot Mix Asphalt, and Masonry
applicaons. The Pioneer
Sales team recognized a niche
market for Mason Sand for use
in golf course and athlec field
turf maintenance and
construcon that did not
require significant addional
sand processing. Coordinang
between Sales, Quality
Control, Operaons, and
Transportaon with
Management oversite, this
project team challenged the
Company to break out of a
construcon mindset in order
to engage a new industry.
The result was Dried Topdressing
and Blended Sands, two new
products to enter the market.
The innovave product
necessitates meeng new drying
requirements to produce a dried
sand with the consistent parcle
size required for golf greens.
Determining that Pioneer could
efficiently blend mixes with loaders
on site; blending formulas were
created covering common raos
used to blend bulk Sand with Peat,
Topsoil, and customer
amendments.
Currently, 2 Blends and Dried
materials are ready for delivery.
This creates the opportunity to
further blend material for water
retenon basins, athlec field
drainage, and future opportunies
for roof top gardens or permeable
surfaces as demand increases.
Whether it is Fairway Topdressing
for local golf courses, the
Washington Naonals, or the
Balmore Ravens,
Rootzone/Greensmix sand for golf
course projects at Merion Golf
Club, Harbourtown CC, or Athlec
Field construcon at the
Maryland Soccerplex, or blended
sand for use under new turf grass
for greens renovaons, and
fairway drainage at the U.S. Naval
Academy Golf Course and
Harbourtown CC or Bunker Sand
for filling in and compleng
bunker renovaons at local
courses, Pioneer has been able to
meet customers’ needs.

The Golf Sand line has steadily
increased in volume each year
through regular sales to our
distributors, direct customer sales,
and through larger construcon or
renovaon projects. It brings a
different type of customer to
Pioneer, one that expects a quality
material, consistency from start to
finish, and capability to produce
custom blended opons.
Congratulaons to Pioneer
Materials for pioneering this new
product and for earning the
