weekly activities are in full swing.
If you ask a long term fitness enthusiast,
what motivates them to consistently
exercise; you may be surprised to hear
the response. Studies have shown
that motivating factors for individuals

Muscle activation technique
(MaT) Specialist
ROCC Fitness Center
is excited to offer
Muscle Activation
Techniques (MAT)
again, with the
addition of the newest
fitness professional
Alicia Harrison! Alicia
holds a BS in Kinesiology form Texas A&M
and brings 12 years of industry experience
to the membership. Muscle Activation
Technique (MAT) is a systematic approach
for evaluating and treating muscular
imbalances that contribute to injury. MAT is
unique as it addresses muscle weakness
as opposed to muscle tightness. Muscle
inhibition, or weakness, can be caused by
stress, trauma, overuse, dehydration or
vitamin/mineral deficiencies. The body will
only allow motion that it can control. This is
your body’s natural protective mechanism.
This process will provide stability
surrounding the joint, restore natural
alignment, decrease pain, and reduce the
risk of future injury.

none—it’s powered by aC current. The a.1 model is built into your dental unit, while the a.2 version has a
typical electrical cord for portability.
Cord
straight, easily cleaned, and very lightweight.
Wand
White plastic with a non-glare finish. The back half is cylindrical with a diameter of 2.8cm, which gradually
morphs into a more bulbous front end having a diameter of 3.6cm at its widest. it has a length of 8.9in/22.5cm
(with an 8mm Turbo tip) and weighs 5.2oz/147.4g. Designed to be held like a handpiece with the single blue,
rubberized activation trigger on the top. Most evaluators considered the design acceptable but not exemplary.
While the weight was not an issue, it was considered too large by two evaluators.
With the activation button being elevated, it is quite easy to find it (without looking). it requires only moderate
pressure to activate, but still not quite as easy as a trigger in a conventional gun unit, especially since the hand
position is much different than the typical pistol grip. One evaluator thought the bulbous contour of the front end
made activation unwieldy, regardless of whether he used his forefinger or thumb. another evaluator thought the
light was too easily activated when removed or docked in its bracket.
Wand hoLder
Mounts in a bracket on your dental unit similar to a handpiece.
Battery
none. Operates on aC power.
Fan
activates and deactivates with the light. all the evaluators thought the fan kept the wand reasonably cool and
its noise was acceptable, although our test unit had an annoying whining sound.
timer
none, but there are two curing intervals. in the standard interval, you push the activation button, followed by
one beep at 5 seconds and another at 10 seconds, when the light automatically deactivates accompanied by a
longer beep. You can interrupt the curing interval by pushing the button. The second curing interval activates if
you push the button twice in quick succession at the beginning of the curing interval. This action will activate
the light for 30 seconds, beeping at 5s, 10s, 20s, and 30s before deactivating.
tips
Most of Demetron’s tips fit except for the 8mm non-turbo. Most of the regular tips are metal-wrapped, but the
Turbo tips are all glass. The 2mm tip will fit into most proximal boxes. Their curing areas are less than the stated
size of the tips and curing power is significantly lower near their edges, especially for the 13mm.
poWer and Curing modes
There is only one power and curing mode. in the 10-minute cure test, there was virtually no drop of power from
the beginning to the end of the test. it achieved full curing power within three seconds of activation.

The selection of a curing light that fits your style of practicing remains one of the
most important equipment purchases you will make. if you have an active restor-ative
practice, it is a device that you use virtually every time you treat a patient. The
right light can help you achieve success, while the converse is true—the wrong
light can make your efforts more tedious and your results less consistent.
Curing lights allow us to initiate the polymerization reaction “on demand” for a
vast array of materials. however, there is, perhaps, more misinformation and
hype regarding this type of equipment compared to just about anything else we
use on a daily basis. Most of these controversies center on how long you have
to cure specific types of restorations as well as how deep you can cure specific
types of materials.
Manufacturers continue to make outlandish claims of their curing capabilities,
most of which fall into the “too good to be true” category. an example is the
claim that a new light can accomplish a “5mm depth of cure in seconds”.
Please don’t be fooled by these ads—you absolutely, positively cannot cure a
composite in three seconds. Period. end of discussion.
if you undercure a restoration, for example, you may not even be aware of the
negative sequelae for years. Therefore, selecting a curing light and using it prop-erly
can greatly affect the performance and longevity of your restorations.

halogen
Use a halogen bulb as the source of light.
+ Reliable—long track record
+ Cures all materials due to wide bandwidth (400nm–510nm)
– Requires a cord due to power consumption
– Cooling fans are necessary and can be noisy
Plasma Arc
Bulb is really an aluminum oxide, high pressure vessel, which contains highly
energized xenon gas (plasma) under 150psi. The inside shape is specific to
reflect light arcing between two electrodes. arc is only about 1mm long, enabling
a very focused beam.
+ Very fast (when a small tip is used)
– expensive
– Large base units
– May not cure all materials

Argon Laser
generates light when energy is applied to an atom raising an electron to a high-er,
unstable energy level. electron will return to stable level by releasing light
through a medium of argon gas.
+ Fast
– Very expensive
– Large base units
– small tips
– May not cure all materials
– Require a cord due to power consumption
LeD (Light emitting Diode)
special diodes (electronic devices that restrict current flow chiefly to one direc-tion)
that emit light when connected in a circuit.
+ Cordless or corded
+ Lightweight
+ small
+ Long battery life due to the low power usage
– May not cure all materials
– some have poor and/or no selection of tips
– May shut down due to overheating during long curing intervals
Are hALogen Lights oBsoLete?
With all the buzz these days over LeDs (one estimate is that 90% of all new
lights being purchased in the U.s. are LeDs), the old reliable halogen curing
light seems destined for the archives. it has been castigated for being heavy,
still tethered to the base unit with a cord, noisy due to its fan, and possessing
old technology.
On the other hand, LeDs are being touted as being on the leading edge of tech-nology
for numerous consumer and business applications. along with nanotech-nology,
LeDs are blazing hot and getting hotter by the minute. it is difficult to
dispute the attraction of LeD curing lights.
nevertheless, while we acknowledge the obvious appeal of these lights, some of
them, especially the simpler versions, have significant drawbacks. The most signifi-cant

Muscle activation technique (MaT) Specialist ROCC Fitness Center is excited to offer Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) again, with the addition of the newest fitness professional Alicia Harrison! Alicia holds a BS in Kinesiology form Texas A&M and brings 12 years of industry experience to the membership. Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) is a systematic approach for evaluating and treating muscular imbalances that contribute to injury. MAT is unique as it addresses muscle weakness as opposed to muscle tightness. Muscle inhibition, or weakness, can be caused by stress, trauma, overuse, dehydration or vitamin/mineral deficiencies. The body will only allow motion that it can control. This is your body’s natural protective mechanism. This process will provide stability surrounding the joint, restore natural alignment, decrease pain, and reduce the risk of future injury. The a.1 model is built into your dental unit, while the a.2 version has a typical electrical cord for portability. Cord straight, easily cleaned, and very lightweight. Wand White plastic with a non-glare finish. The back half is cylindrical with a diameter of 2.8cm, which gradually morphs into a more bulbous front end having a diameter of 3.6cm at its widest. it has a length of 8.9in/22.5cm (with an 8mm Turbo tip) and weighs 5.2oz/147.4g. Designed to be held like a handpiece with the single blue, rubberized activation trigger on the top. Most evaluators considered the design acceptable but not exemplary. While the weight was not an issue, it was considered too large by two evaluators. With the activation button being elevated, it is quite easy to find it (without looking). it requires only moderate pressure to activate, but still not quite as easy as a trigger in a conventional gun unit, especially since the hand position is much different than the typical pistol grip. One evaluator thought the bulbous contour of the front end made activation unwieldy, regardless of whether he used his forefinger or thumb. another evaluator thought the light was too easily activated when removed or docked in its bracket. Wand hoLder Mounts in a bracket on your dental unit similar to a handpiece. Battery none. Operates on aC power. Fan activates and deactivates with the light. all the evaluators thought the fan kept the wand reasonably cool and its noise was acceptable, although our test unit had an annoying whining sound. timer none, but there are two curing intervals. in the standard interval, you push the activation button, followed by one beep at 5 seconds and another at 10 seconds, when the light automatically deactivates accompanied by a longer beep. You can interrupt the curing interval by pushing the button. The second curing interval activates if you push the button twice in quick succession at the beginning of the curing interval. This action will activate the light for 30 seconds, beeping at 5s, 10s, 20s, and 30s before deactivating. tips Most of Demetron’s tips fit except for the 8mm non-turbo. Most of the regular tips are metal-wrapped, but the Turbo tips are all glass. The 2mm tip will fit into most proximal boxes. Their curing areas are less than the stated size of the tips and curing power is significantly lower near their edges, especially for the 13mm. poWer and Curing modes There is only one power and curing mode. in the 10-minute cure test, there was virtually no drop of power from the beginning to the end of the test. it achieved full curing power within three seconds of activation. peak poWer (mW/cm2) 8mm turbo 1,150 11mm 600 11mm turbo 800 13mm 600 hardness (knoop) at 2mm Cure time (seConds) 10 n/a 26.6 20 n/a 31.4 40 n/a 38.8 Plasma Arc sapphire Den-Mat Price $3,415.50 tips (# of sizes) 4 Bulb Life (hours) 1,000 Price $695.00 requires tools to Change No tip poWer gun Weight 5.3oz/150.3g timer Base unit 3, 5, 7, 9 gun 3, 5, 7, 9 Peak Power (mW/cm2) 1,775 Built-in radiometer Yes (digital) heat generation (°C) 34.8-52.0 The selection of a curing light that fits your style of practicing remains one of the most important equipment purchases you will make. if you have an active restor-ative practice, it is a device that you use virtually every time you treat a patient. The right light can help you achieve success, while the converse is true—the wrong light can make your efforts more tedious and your results less consistent. Curing lights allow us to initiate the polymerization reaction “on demand” for a vast array of materials. however, there is, perhaps, more misinformation and hype regarding this type of equipment compared to just about anything else we use on a daily basis. Most of these controversies center on how long you have to cure specific types of restorations as well as how deep you can cure specific types of materials. Manufacturers continue to make outlandish claims of their curing capabilities, most of which fall into the “too good to be true” category. an example is the claim that a new light can accomplish a “5mm depth of cure in seconds”. Please don’t be fooled by these ads—you absolutely, positively cannot cure a composite in three seconds. Period. end of discussion. if you undercure a restoration, for example, you may not even be aware of the negative sequelae for years. Therefore, selecting a curing light and using it prop-erly can greatly affect the performance and longevity of your restorations. tyPes of Curing Lights halogen Use a halogen bulb as the source of light. + Reliable—long track record + Cures all materials due to wide bandwidth (400nm–510nm) – Requires a cord due to power consumption – Cooling fans are necessary and can be noisy Plasma Arc Bulb is really an aluminum oxide, high pressure vessel, which contains highly energized xenon gas (plasma) under 150psi. The inside shape is specific to reflect light arcing between two electrodes. arc is only about 1mm long, enabling a very focused beam. + Very fast (when a small tip is used) – expensive – Large base units – May not cure all materials tip 8mm 8mm turbo – Requires a cord that may be liquid-filled, may be stiff, and can degenerate over time Argon Laser generates light when energy is applied to an atom raising an electron to a high-er, unstable energy level. electron will return to stable level by releasing light through a medium of argon gas. + Fast – Very expensive – Large base units – small tips – May not cure all materials – Require a cord due to power consumption LeD (Light emitting Diode) special diodes (electronic devices that restrict current flow chiefly to one direc-tion) that emit light when connected in a circuit. + Cordless or corded + Lightweight + small + Long battery life due to the low power usage – May not cure all materials – some have poor and/or no selection of tips – May shut down due to overheating during long curing intervals Are hALogen Lights oBsoLete? With all the buzz these days over LeDs (one estimate is that 90% of all new lights being purchased in the U.s. are LeDs), the old reliable halogen curing light seems destined for the archives. it has been castigated for being heavy, still tethered to the base unit with a cord, noisy due to its fan, and possessing old technology. On the other hand, LeDs are being touted as being on the leading edge of tech-nology for numerous consumer and business applications. along with nanotech-nology, LeDs are blazing hot and getting hotter by the minute. it is difficult to dispute the attraction of LeD curing lights. nevertheless, while we acknowledge the obvious appeal of these lights, some of them, especially the simpler versions, have significant drawbacks. The most signifi-cant ones are lack of timers, small tips, and the inability to cure beyond –4 minutes.
