CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
We extend special thanks to our Area Coordinators for a successful 2008 season.
We recently mailed invoices for 2009 dues. The invoice is also our roster
verification. Even if you are a life member, please complete and mail the form
back to us.
We give a special welcome to Michael Sholer who joined our Executive Board
in January, 2009. Michael has been a long-time member who has attended most
of our luncheon meetings.
A new country list is enclosed. We added St. Barts in the Caribbean and
Abkhazia in Asia. Our new total is 319.
The UK Club will host an International meeting this spring on Friday, April 17, to Sunday, April 19.
I hope many of you will be able to attend. More details are on page 3.
Our September 12, 2009, meeting will be in San Diego instead of Orange County.
We look forward to seeing you at the March event.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Being halfway through my term as TCC President makes me think of “Mezzo
Cammin,” which is a wonderful poem by Longfellow about being halfway through
life. Longfellow’s generation of writers isn’t much appreciated now, but they were
both great writers and great travelers. Longfellow traveled widely in France,
Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, Denmark, England, Sweden and Switzerland.
His contemporary, Washington Irving, also traveled in Germany, France and Spain:
in fact, he wrote Rip Van Winkle in Birmingham, England. He had learned all about
Sleepy Hollow on an earlier trip when he had to flee from a yellow fever outbreak.
What exotic place was suffering from yellow fever? It was Manhattan.
Travel back then, in the early nineteenth century, could be seriously difficult. We have it much easier, and
we are all wimps compared to Montaigne, who traveled around the Alps in the sixteenth century, all the
while enduring excruciating kidney stones as his carriage bumped from one rock to another.
We owe a debt to these earlier hardy travelers. Mark Twain put it very well in 1857. “Travel is fatal to
prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.
Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little
corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
So let’s all keep moving! And if you haven’t been to Dublin’s fair city recently, or at all, why not join the
local TCC group for their meeting in April? I’m sure they’d love to meet you.
Christopher Hudson
ST. BARTS AND ABKHAZIA ADDED TO TCC LIST
(continued on page 3)
The TCC Board, at its meeting in December,
2008, voted to add two more countries – St.
Barts and Abkhazia -- to its approved list, bring-ing
the total to 319. Here is some of the ration-ale
for the Board’s decision.
St. Barts, in the Caribbean, became a separate
collectivity of France on February 22, 2007.
Previously, it was administered together with the
French portion of the island of St. Martin. With
its new status, the U.S. State Department added
St. Barts to its list of entities, as did the American
Radio Relay League.
The Board discussed the two breakaway regions
of the republic of Georgia – Abkhazia and South
Ossetia. Since August, 2008, these regions have
been occupied by Russian troops and both
declared their independence, but they have only
been recognized as independent by Russia and
Nicaragua. Both regions originally declared their
independence in the early 1990s but Georgia
denied their status, so the Board previously
declined to recognize them as separate entities
because of the uncertainty of their outcome.

Longfellow’s generation of writers isn’t much appreciated now, but they were both great writers and great travelers. Longfellow traveled widely in France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, Denmark, England, Sweden and Switzerland. His contemporary, Washington Irving, also traveled in Germany, France and Spain: in fact, he wrote Rip Van Winkle in Birmingham, England. He had learned all about Sleepy Hollow on an earlier trip when he had to flee from a yellow fever outbreak. What exotic place was suffering from yellow fever? It was Manhattan. Travel back then, in the early nineteenth century, could be seriously difficult. We have it much easier, and we are all wimps compared to Montaigne, who traveled around the Alps in the sixteenth century, all the while enduring excruciating kidney stones as his carriage bumped from one rock to another. We owe a debt to these earlier hardy travelers. Mark Twain put it very well in 1857. “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” So let’s all keep moving! And if you haven’t been to Dublin’s fair city recently, or at all, why not join the local TCC group for their meeting in April? I’m sure they’d love to meet you. Christopher Hudson ST. BARTS AND ABKHAZIA ADDED TO TCC LIST (continued on page 3) The TCC Board, at its meeting in December, 2008, voted to add two more countries – St. Barts and Abkhazia -- to its approved list, bring-ing the total to 319. Here is some of the ration-ale for the Board’s decision. St. Barts, in the Caribbean, became a separate collectivity of France on February 22, 2007. Previously, it was administered together with the French portion of the island of St. Martin. With its new status, the U.S. State Department added St. Barts to its list of entities, as did the American Radio Relay League. The Board discussed the two breakaway regions of the republic of Georgia – Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Since August, 2008, these regions have been occupied by Russian troops and both declared their independence, but they have only been recognized as independent by Russia and Nicaragua. Both regions originally declared their independence in the early 1990s but Georgia denied their status, so the Board previously declined to recognize them as separate entities because of the uncertainty of their outcome.
