Dear Sir/Madam,
I am currently employed as an Environmental Officer for an international cruise liner and prior to this
I was an Environmental Advisor for an Australian Coal Mine. I am responsible for the management
and maintenance of the ships continuing compliance with the International Convention for the
Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and other National and Local regulations. This is
accomplished through regular monitoring, sampling, analysis of data and reporting of the ships
environmental impacts, ensuring that all required documentation and permits are prepared, submitted
and reported within the specified deadlines.
The role requires me to work independently with minimal supervision and be the subject matter expert
on the ship in Environmental matters and compliances. I have an in depth knowledge of regulatory
requirements and company policy and provide on-going advice in relation to compliance and
environmental management. This has allowed me to actively promote good environmental practice
and provide essential advice to ensure compliance and recommend, coordinate and implement best
practice to a range of personnel, ranging from the Master of the Ship to the Cabin Stewards, the Chief
Engineer to the Laundry Assistants.
To ensure compliance of National and Local environmental regulations, I ensure that I keep up-to-date
with current legislation through liaising with the local port authorities and agents. This requires me to
work closely with people from different nationalities, languages and cultures. I can communicate
effectively and efficiently to ensure that all legal requirements are met and that both parties
accomplish their desired outcomes.
On a daily basis, I undertake a ship wide environmental surveillance and audit to ensure that
compliance to the Company’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is maintained in all
departments. Where potential non-compliances are identified, corrective actions are implemented with
appropriate department heads, with follow-up were necessary to ensure that that the gaps were closed
in a timely and proficient manner.
I am a member of the on board Health and Safety and Executive committees. Throughout my daily
inspections of the ship, including the engine room, maintenance areas, decks and the Bridge, I
identify, rectify through remedial action and report hazards which are potentially dangerous to the
environment, health and safety of the ship, employees, contractors and passengers. Reported hazards
are prioritized and recommendations for resolution provided to prevent recurrences.
During an emergency I report to the Safety Centre as part of the First Response Team. I am the ships
environmental point of contact for the coordination of any responses to environmental impacts caused
by the emergency. This includes the communication with local authorities and response teams. I am
also Second-in-Command for the reporting and identification of all crew to their specific posts,
muster and life boat stations. This role enables me to maintain a stable state of mind whilst under
extreme pressure.
In my previous role as an Environmental Advisor in an Australian Coal Mine, I was responsible for
ensuring specialist environmental contractors under my management had the correct control of work
permits to undertake project work for the company. As part of this process, they were required to have
the relevant Job Hazard Assessments and Safe Work Method documentation, which I reviewed and
signed off, ensuring all job related environmental, health and safety hazards had been considered and
appropriate controls implemented. As part of this process I maintained a regular presence at the work
site, especially during environmentally sensitive operations.
I oversaw the modelling, sampling and monitoring of air quality and the execution of controls to
ensure Environmental Permit conditions were met and best practice operating standards followed. I
provided advice to operational managers when operations need to be modified to meet regulatory
requirements. This responsibility required leadership qualities and I have proven that I am competent
and confident doing this in a challenging environment where production pressures would otherwise
demand operations continue.

Throughout my time at the mine I was responsible for the ground breaking stages of the mine. This
included coordination and implementation of archaeological surveys, undertaken by the local
aboriginal tribes, to surface removal through blasting operations. I was required to monitor blast
vibrations, overpressure and any fume pollution to ensure compliance to environmental regulatory
limits. On occasions, this required the reporting and investigation of non-compliances to local
authorities.
The use of water within the mine required the removal of water from a local river as well as from
storage reservoirs within the mine site. The water was transported throughout the mine site through a
large network of over and underground pipes. Water movement and pipe integrity had to be
monitored. Where defects were detected I was responsible for reporting environmental impacts this
may cause and ensuring that repairs were accomplished within a specified timeframe and within
environmental licence requirements.
I was responsible for the environmental control of a tailing pipeline installation project over a
freshwater stream which ran directly off the mine site. To ensure that this high risk operation was
fulfilled without any environmental impacts, the project was effectively planned alongside the
contractors, with me managing the environmental risks and the requirement for stringent
environmental controls to be implemented before and during the construction phase. I ensured
compliance to the environmental controls through regular sites visits.
I have a wealth of experience in training and coaching and am able to deliver information in a variety
of ways to ensure the comprehension of key learnings by all participants. The training I have
delivered has influenced and inspired others to make behavioural changes of their own accord,
improving the control of environment, health and safety for all.
I have held a managerial role in which I developed leadership skills. These have been enhanced
through the completion of the BHP Billiton Foundation for Graduate Program, which was aimed at
developing leadership skills in potential future leaders. My leadership responsibilities have included
developing co-workers through training and support ensuring their roles were fulfilled. I use a variety
of strategies such as group discussions and dialogue, one-on-one mentoring and coaching, focusing on
improving personal ability and skill acquisition to develop those under my management.
I possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and written. I have experience
of speaking with local and national media (radio, newspaper and television), one-on-one coaching,
report writing, and presenting to a wide range of stakeholders.
Throughout my career I have continually improved myself through the development of skills.
Evidence of this can be seen through my professional membership of IEMA and my personal studies,
of which I am currently undertaking the NEBOSH Diploma in International Occupational Health and
Safety. I look forward to continuing my professional development and the opportunity to ameliorate
my skills.
I should like to confirm my commitment to this position and look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully
