Dear Mr, Mrs, Ms;
The purpose of this letter is to introduce myself and talk with you about the
opportunity for me to provide my expertise to your safety program. My confidential
resume is enclosed for your review, and I am certain that you find me very well
qualified. Highlights of my resume include;
• Degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety;
• In 2015 I completed and received my Certificate of Occupational Health and Safety
through the University of New Brunswick. Acquired an NCSO designation through
the ACSA in 2013.
• Minimum 4 years in a health and safety experience, oil and gas industry
experience preferred;
• Recently I’ve been employed by Secure Energy Services (dyers) and Petrowest
Energy (2 years) which included providing Health, Safety and Environmental
supporting the construction and operations of facilities, pipelines and landfills.
• Thorough knowledge in incident investigation and root cause analysis;
• I attended and completed in 2004 and again in 2009 the DNV (SCAT) Investigation
and Practical Risk Assessment courses. I have worked with teams, facilitated and
led incident investigations from near misses to fatalities. The primary goal was to
draw a conclusion of what the root cause that caused the upset or circumstances
that led to the incident. I’m a firm believer that all incidents are preventable.
• Experience in Hazard identification and Hazard communication and control
measures;
• I have attended and completed several Hazard Assessment courses. I have an in-
depth understanding of inspections (formal and informal) so that I may assist
management and workers what constitutes a hazard and how to mitigate or remove
the hazard. The difficulty is determining what systems or process failures permitted
the hazard to occur. I have a strong understanding of control measures such as
elimination or substitution, engineering, administrative, and PPE. Communication of
hazards could be as simple as removing the hazard, signage, lock-out/ tag-out
(isolating), and finally communicating hazards through bulletins, safety meetings
and pre-task tailgate meetings.
• Demonstrate strong leadership skills within the health and safety discipline;
• With Canfor I was elected the Sawmill and Plywood mill’s safety Chairperson and
sat on the chair for two terms. I provided leadership, guidance, support and advice
to the shift safety captains and workers. This continued when I changed roles as the
Mill’s safety coordinator. As the Safety Manager for Petrowest Corp which
comprised of 14 companies and 14 safety coordinators. I provided directives, and
support from the corporate office to the 14 coordinators. With the 14 I started a
safety committee by developing up a terms of reference utilizing the Roberts Rules
of Conduct and conducting monthly committee meetings. I developed,
communicated and released an overarching corporate safety manual, conducted
health and safety audits and inspections. Developed and published several
corporate standardized safety documents and directives based on a GAP analysis.
• With Secure Energy Services I developed a Construction Supervisor Handbook,
Manual (with specific Code of Practices) and a Construction Supervisor
Competency protocol which included an evaluation checklist and development tool.
• I have provided senior management, management and employees with statistical
reports based on lead and lag indicators.
• Strong knowledge of Federal and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety
Legislation;
• I have attended and completed courses with WorksafeBC and the ACSA for
Legislation awareness and with the University of New Brunswick a course in
Legislative Compliance and Corporate Responsibility which mainly covers federal
legislation.
• Exceptional team building and interpersonal skills;
• I pride myself with ensuring that all workers, contractors and customers are
responsible to their own safety; however I’m here to help, support and advise. I’ve
worked along side workers, contractors and supervisors to gain their trust I’m here
to help and support not build obstructions by bogging down the process with
bureaucracy. I’ve assist them with inspections, incident investigations in -40c to
+35c. Safety happens in the field not at a computer screen.
• With Secure Energy Services I supported the construction team by being on-site at
the kick-off meetings, dramatic changes in tasks (civil - structural - electrical/
instrumentation - commissioning). This proved difficult at times to travel from
outside Fort Nelson to North Dakota however; not impossible. The development of
the Construction Supervisor Competency handbook assisted with team building.
• Excellent computer skills with a solid understanding of the Microsoft suite of
products;
• I have attended and completed college held courses with Excel 1and 2, Word 1 and
2, and Secure Energy Services provided on-line courses in Outlook, Powerpoint,
Sharepoint and Neo-Systems (incident reporting and tracking program). I have
utilized these courses and program extensively over the last 12 plus years.
• A valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract;
• I currently hold an Alberta clean class 5 with Air endorsement with no demerit
points. A safety person needs to lead by example.
• Experience in industrial hygiene is an asset.
• I have completed with the University of New Brunswick the Fundamentals of
Occupational Hygiene course. During inspections; occupational hygiene is
one of the corner stones of the inspections. Hearing protection, respirators,
control of hazardous materials by understanding routes of entry are vital to a
safety program.
• Managed expectations and built effective relationships with WCB, OH&S,
ISN, Comply-Works and other regulating legislative organizations,
• Led the ongoing management and continuous improvement of the successful
Safety Management and COR programs,
• Experienced working within operations, managing expectations, needs and
concerns; demonstrated effective communication of safety and OH&S
requirements within the operations context,
• I performed vendor management utilizing Compyworks and corporate
directives.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills that allow for clear
communication of complex matters.
• I have in the past supported, directed and offered advice to construction
supervisors, contractors and vendors.
• I have the ability to engage team members and customers in the
development of safety procedures, protocols and practices.
My professional background, along with my sincere interest in helping others, has
enhanced my desire to excel. As a highly motivated professional, I enjoy the
challenge of complex, demanding projects.
I am available to meet with you; in person, on the phone or by email to discuss my
qualifications at your convenience. I would like to thank you in advance for your
time and any consideration you may give me. I look forward to hearing from you.
I will move for employment purposes
