6. Dear Sir / Madam,
Hello, and firstly, thanks for taking the time
to review my CV and this letter of introduction. The
intention of this letter is to give you more of an idea
about who I am on a more personal level and to further
expand on some of the information contained in my CV.
After developing a keen interest in design at
a very early age and after coming top of my school
classes on many occasions at Technical Drawing and
Art, I developed a very clear and motivated desire to
pursue design and engineering at degree level. As a
child I had always enjoyed playing with Lego, building
models, re-engineering (translate as ‘destroying’)
my toys to see how they functioned, much to the
disappointment of my parents! Therefore, I was always
destined to follow this trend into higher education. After
gaining a BTEC diploma in General Art and Design,
which acted as a sound basis and foundation for my
later degree studies, I worked as a draughtsman for a
couple of years to save money for the 3 year Product
Design course. This period was invaluable for learning
a few key ‘life-skills’ and also for developing my
commercial experience which came in very useful after
completing my degree. I enjoyed every single day of the
degree, not only because I was able to get my ‘hands
dirty’ with real-world design principles and practice
but also because of the satisfaction of having funded
myself through something which I actually loved doing. I
ultimately gained a good final degree classification.
After University I continued working as a
draughtsman for a year, and although being higher-
qualified and career-orientated, I accepted this
lucrative contract role primarily to pay off some student
debts. My first break into the world of Design and
Engineering came when I was offered to assist in the
formulation and subsequent running of the Liverpool
University Design Resource Centre. This facility was set
up by myself and three colleagues with very limited
funding and resources supplied by the University and
under the initiation and direction of the Dean of the
Faculty of Design and Engineering. It soon became
obvious to us that it was going to be a monumental task
to set up something which would, in a very short space
of time, be required to act as a support-focus point for
the Design & Engineering
students. However, we
made the best of it, rolled
our sleeves up and set
about creating what is now
considered to be one of the
best annex-services provided
to any course of this kind
in the UK. The centre has
now been fully integrated
to the faculty after it was
deemed important enough
to warrant a financial review
and subsequent increase in
budget and resources.
From leaving the Design Resource Centre in ’97
and through to June ’98 I enjoyed various short-term
contract roles in design drafting and design engineering.
In January ’99, I also formed my own company; CADserv
Europe Ltd., initially with a view to taking advantage
of the then-advantageous tax situation of being self-
employed but also to explore the possibility of working
for myself on a full-time basis. CADserv started as a
freelance drafting
service to various
companies and
enabled me to work
from home and the
core of my work
centred on preparing
layouts and GA’s
for Architectural
practices.
Starting as
a Design Engineer
at Faber Design
Consultancy in June
’98 was a big step up.
Faber specialise in very
high-level design and
engineering solutions
for a prestigious client
base including BNFL
and BAE Systems. I was
proud and privileged
to be able to work on projects for both these clients
including that of the Eurofighter Typhoon. I enjoyed
many site visits to BAE Warton in Lancashire and was
lucky enough to be able to coincide the visits with
occasional roll-out test flights of the Eurofighter; after
completing my on-site duties I was able to surreptitiously
hang around off to the side of the hangar and marvel
at this fantastic piece of engineering as it thundered
down the runway the few hundred meters it needed to
be able to take off. I am still very proud to be able to say
that I played a very small part in its development.
January 2001 brought another very interesting
contract opportunity, this time based in Holland and
for a company which specialises in the mysterious and
complex world of semi-conductor wafer processing
technology. ASM is a key player in this field and being
located in Holland I jumped at the chance of a change
of scenery and another new and challenging position.
I very quickly fell for the charms of Holland.
The people are incredibly friendly, the country itself is
beautiful and the work ethic, in my opinion is much
more ‘progressive’ than I have previously experienced
anywhere. I prefer to be in an environment where there
is a ‘can-do‘ attitude to problem-solving, i.e. where
people prefer to say ‘Hmm, that’s an interesting idea,
we should look at it further to see if it would work.’, rather
than ‘That’s a ridiculous idea, stop wasting my time!’. In
the time that I have spent here in Holland I’m certainly
finding much less egocentricity in the workplace and I
hope that continues to be the case.
An introduction to Chris Dixon
It all started with Lego!
7. An introduction to Chris Dixon
A great (if a tad expensive!) way to let off some steam.
Beginning November 2001, I decided to take
CADserv to a new level and explore the possibility of
finding a new contract in Holland. By this time I had built
up a good subcontractor base over the years and knew
that I had at least 10 people who would be able to work
for me at a moment’s notice. After calling around and
making several presentations, Shell EP were the first to
bite; they were developing their old main building in
Rijswijk into what is now the beautiful, new EPi-Centre.
They needed someone to convert all of the old paper-
based engineering / architectural drawings for the
building into a readable CAD format. After several
weeks of project preparation and final negotiations
we began the conversion process. By the time of the
project start I had managed to find an extra 25 drafters
enabling me to offer Shell the opportunity of a faster
turnaround-time for the whole project. Of course, they
jumped at the chance and after 2 years the job was
completed to Shell’s satisfaction.
I was immensely proud of having attained a
major blue-chip company as my first Dutch client and on
the strength of this new-found corporate confidence in
CADserv other major clients soon followed by retaining
our services, most notably; Imtech bv, Vitens and Stoel
Partners bv, amongst others.
Since 2002, I have enjoyed working with
CADserv and also spending time working for several
Dutch companies doing some very interesting things.
One of my most recent contracts, at FMC in Arnhem,
gave me the opportunity to utilise some of the
project management skills I have amassed over the
years. I started there as a design engineer and was
subsequently given responsibility to oversee all existing
R&D projects in terms of correct and efficient planning,
standardised procedures, procurement and funding,
resource management, thorough risk assessments, and
commissioning. This was in addition to bringing several
corporate improvement programs to completion,
including having everyone in the company VCA
certified for safety.
I am currently based in Holland and after
a career of undertaking some very interesting but
short-term projects I am now looking for my next long-
term or permanent role within a suitably progressive
and interesting organisation. I am willing to relocate
anywhere in the world for the right position and CADserv
continues to act purely as a back-up activity between
‘real-world’ contracts.
I’m a team player, I take my work seriously
but I also enjoy having a laugh and am very sociable
and always make a concerted effort to get to know
my work-colleagues on a personal level as well as a
professional level. I’m a very open person and try to give
the most honest answers to every question I’m presented
with. Managing a team of 25 guys (55 at CADservs’
busiest period) has given me an invaluable insight and
an appreciation of the delicacies and intricacies of
effective people-management.
On the language front, I pride myself on my
native English language skills and these have been put
to good use during international client meetings and
presentations at ADIPEC and OTC conferences. I’m also
continuing to improve my Dutch skills and one day the
intention is to speak this moeilijk taal exclusively while I
am living in Holland!
In my spare time, I’m to be found out walking
along the beautiful beaches and countryside of Holland
with friends during all seasons and I’m also proud to
admit to being a 33% owner of an Ariel Atom track-day
racing car. Together with the other two owners we make
regular trips to the Nurburgring racing circuit in Germany
where we continue to enjoy long weekends trying to
beat each other’s lap-times. We invariably end up in
friendly arguments and banter at the end of the day
about who was faster and who did the most damage
to the car over a stein of delicious German beer and a
Bratwurst.
Well, that’s about it, I think I’ve covered the
most important stuff! I’m sure subsequent years will
enable me to add more but I hope you have gained
a further insight about me than that which could be
conveyed by my CV. Thanks again for taking the time to
read this!
