Cover Photo
Final
Product
The first step in creating this piece was that after carrying out extensive research of the client
and the audience. I started with a genre that the audience enjoyed found out through my
research (Sci-Fi/Horror) and used this when developing my idea. For the cover photo I wanted to
create something that linked to the title of the piece as well as highlight issues that would be
discussed within the documentary. I also wanted the cover photo to stand out from existing
products from the BBC therefore I planned to create an SFX piece that would not only shock the
audience but intrigue them into watching the documentary (definition-shockvertising, is a
unique tactic where advertisers use provocative, taboo subjects and images to grab the public's
attention).Creating an SFX piece for the cover photo also allows me to demonstrate my skills in
something I have been studying for months and have a real interest in, it also allows me to stand
out and create something truly unique. During production I made my own scar wax for the piece
I also did all the blending, colour work/theory and effects. Production was successful, and I was
able to create a piece that I was happy with, and I believe the client would be happy with. When
creating my piece, I wanted my title to be something that not only engaged the audience but
make it something they could relate to. I got the phrase surgically attached from my
grandparents who say to me that I am always on my phone it might as well be surgically
attached to my hand as I never go anywhere without it and as I fall into the target age audience,
I knew this had to be included in the title as if I get told it a lot then this may be something that
resonates the intended target audience. As I am from Britain, I wanted to make a documentary
that was purely focused on British culture as that was a part of the brief.
I also did this as even though I am creating a documentary with a theme that may attract a wide range of
audiences as the BBC and subsequently BBC three charge a licensing fee to watch their programs
it means they are restricted in what they can produce. One of these rules is that they can't aim to attract
a mainstream audience therefore by focusing my documentary on Britain and young people it narrows
the potential viewing audience which will then allow me to stay within the rules of BBC making
something that not only the client can use but a product the client is happy with. As surgically attached
by itself may make the audience believe that it is a medical documentary, I knew that I had to include a
sub-clause to reinforce the digital theme of the documentary. As the documentary will talk about the
addiction young people have to their phones and subsequently social media, I wanted to include this in
the title. However, I also wanted to make the documentary title catchy therefore I wanted to use
alliteration however I couldnโ€™t think of an a-word that linked to technology, so I used a digital
thesaurus to find a synonym for addiction when I came across devoted which fit in perfectly with the
theme of my documentary which left me with :SURGICALLY ATTACHED DIGITALLY DEVOTED BRITAIN.I
used photoshop in order to edit my piece using the skills I have developed from past projects and
my own experimentation I was able to add extra components playing more into the Horror/Sci-Fi genre.
For the background I decided to go for solid black not only did this allow for the colours to pop but it
also allowed for details to be showcased. Furthermore, black more often has dysphemistic connotations
than other colours and is often connected to darkness, death, decay, and evil deeds which also relates
back to horror genre. The other focal colour used is neon green as while green is associated with
tranquillity and has a calming effect on both the mind and psyche, neon green can make one feel more
alert. Due to the fact that neon colours are ultra-bright, they can be associated with warning and danger.
The message behind the cover photo was to highlight that even if they didnโ€™t watch the documentary that
it would start conversations as the eye-catching visuals aim to highlight how social media and technology
takes over the lives of young people and how young people feel like they couldnโ€™t live without technology.
When creating this piece not only did, I broaden my knowledge of photoshop by exploring new techniques,
but I also learned how to import fonts into photoshop to make my piece more unique. I believe that the
cover photo enabled me to get my message effectively across to the audience whilst engaging them using
a shock factor by including horror/sci-fi elements to the piece. When showing a group of people who were
within the target audience age range, I received lots of positive comments such as, "visually stunning" and
,"I like the metaphor of being attached to our phones" which proves I was able to convey my message to
the audience and they understand how I have portrayed it. My aim for the cover photo was to create
something that not only pleased the client and engaged the target audience age demographic but create
something that was out of the ordinary and not something audiences are used to seeing as the BBC are
not allowed to intentionally attract a mainstream audience it meant that I could create a unique piece and
as the producer add a signature style to the piece without the restrictions of having to appeal to a wide
range audience giving me more creative power in which direction I wanted the documentary to go
and how I wanted to engage my audience allowing me to be able to include and showcase something that
I haven't been able to do before due to the nature of past projects. Due to the positive feedback and
comments, I have received about the piece I am going to stick to this cover photo with no need to change
anything due to the positive comments it has received from a group of the target audience.
Title card Final Product
Concept art ideas and inspiration
For my title card I wanted to link it back to the
cover photo and keep with the SFX horror/sci-fi
theme. I wanted to create something again
that not only highlighted the subject matter
but would engage the audience and capture
their attention. Using this theme allows for
continuity to be maintained for audiences
however I decided to add different elements to
keep the title card and retrospectively the
documentary engaging for audiences. For the title
card I decided to use a face with more of an old
school robot design to link old school and new
school technology. I also wanted the title card to
reference social media with half of the face as a
robot and half of the face done in a modern-day
makeup design using colours inspired by the
Instagram logo. The aim of my title card is to
highlight the issues of social media portraying
them in a way that would engage the target
audience whilst maintaining continuity with the
rest of the documentary.
When in the production stage I came across
many challenges when creating the piece for
example the room was to warm therefore the
scar wax melted and became to pliable
meaning that the scar wax began to melt off
the face. As a side had fallen off and I had to
rethink my idea I decided it would look
better with only three sides. My final product
although it was a bit messy due to the heat of
the room causing problems throughout
production, I believe I was able to convey my
theme of social media and technology taking
over the lives of young people. I believe that I
was able to showcase my skills in both SFX
and wigs however due to the way it looks it
the piece will also allow me to showcase my
photoshop skills as I transform it
into something that appears more technical
and robot-like.
CHANGING MY
IDEA
The feedback I received from a group of people within the target
audience had mixed reviews about the piece as whilst I received
some positive comments such as "Informative, explains what it
is about very well" and "Simple but effective" I also received some
negative feedback such as "Good concept but the visuals are off-
putting" and "I like what is it trying to get across, but
I don't understand the image of the girl". Receiving this feedback
and talking over it with friends made me come to the conclusion
that if I wanted to create a title card that the audience not only
understood but engaged with, I needed to go back to the drawing
board. I decided that for my new concept I would keep the same
lettering, black background and British landmark theme along the
bottom, but I would change the image from a robot cyborg to a
piece similar to the cover photo in theme but portrayed in a
different way. By changing my idea, it also meant that the cover
photo and title card would link maintaining continuity between
products making it easier for the viewer to identify the two
together. As I did receive some positive feedback when I ask for
feedback on the new title card I am going to make I will ask the
group which one they prefer and why and then make my decision
about which title card I will use in the documentary whether I
alter the existing to make it better or go with the new one.
Since I had to redo my title card, I produced a new idea which allowed me to maintain continuity between products
making it easier for the viewer to identify the two together by creating products that looked similar but were
unique. The first step in creating this new piece was to review my audience and target research to better establish
what worked and what didnโ€™t work for the audience. I still decided to go with the Sci-Fi/Horror genre however being
careful to not go to gory as when I received feedback on my last title card the audience made it apparent that they
thought it was too off-putting and it would put them off watching the documentary therefore I kept this in
mind when creating this piece. For the title card I wanted to create something that linked to the title of the piece as
well as highlight issues that would be discussed within the documentary. I also wanted the cover photo and title
card to link and be recognised together also making sure that it would stand out from existing products from the
BBC therefore I planned to create an SFX piece on my arm similar to that of the cover photo that would not only
shock the audience but intrigue them into watching the documentary. For the title card I decided to paint a phone
and charger onto my arm suggesting to the audience that whilst the cover photo was plugged into a phone, the
phone and charger has now merged into the arm and taken over a metaphor of how social media can affect the way
we act, talk and think. I used the same colour scheme for the title card as I used for the cover photo meaning forthe
background, I decided to go for solid black as not only did this allow for the colours to pop but it also allowed for
details to be showcased. Furthermore, black more often has dysphemistic connotations than other colours and is
often connected to darkness, death, decay, and evil deeds which also relates back to horror genre. The other
focal colour used is neon green as while green is associated with tranquillity and has a calming effect on both the
mind and psyche, neon green can make one feel more alert. Since neon colours are ultra-bright, they can be
associated with warning and danger. During the production and post-production, I learned that at first it is okay to
make mistakes and create something that might be wrong for the audience as receiving feedback can help develop
ideas and eventually make something that is better suited to the audience as when I asked for feedback on my new
title card I received much more positive feedback such as, "I like the title; I feel like it really makes sense with how
society is today with technology and social media", "This is less graphic; it isn't as uncomfortable to look at".
Documentary evaluation
Upon starting this project, I had some experience of filming but only a 2-minute advertisement. However, through
completing the project I learned that I have to film in landscape in order to create something that can be used in
the industry I also learned the basics of premiere pro allowing me to learn cuts and transitions as well as how
to add wording onto a project, so I had some knowledge about where to begin for this project. For the
documentary I wanted to include an interview with someone who works with young people in this case it was a
youth worker however I experienced some issues when setting up as I had originally planned to film with the
camera facing the wall which would allow me to add my own background however when setting up the shot, I
experienced many problems. First of all, as the floor was uneven, I had to adjust each individual tri-pod leg to make
sure that the camera was level using the built in levelers on the tri-pod to make sure everything was level. Once it
was level however, I occurred another problem which was that the wall I planned to attach the backdrop to was
not suitable therefore it fell off the wall and after multiple attempts it would not stick therefore, I had to change
the setup of the shot as I didnโ€™t like the look of the original wall for the backdrop of the interview. I therefore
decided to change the positioning of the way I would be filming and aimed the camera at the garage door which
became a better backdrop than the original one I had planned. This experience allowed me to make decisions
quickly and be able to change and go with a new plan, being able to adapt quickly is a skill commonly found within
the media industry therefore this experience allowed me to carry out this skill firsthand practicing for the future. As
the documentary was quite interview based I wanted the audience to be able to hear what my interviewee was
saying at a high quality therefore I used a microphone. The microphone allowed me to capture a high quality sound
which my camera was able to pick up and record.it was also my first time reaching out to a charity for an interview
which taught me vital communication skills that I could carry with me into my career and the industry and although
it was not a possibility to get an interview with young minds, they did give me permission to use existing videos
they had created. This allowed me to make my own creative decisions for the documentary and also gave me more
experience in adapting original plans and being able to change direction quickly vital for the industry.
Through my audience research I knew what the importance of social media was to the audience and how they are
much more likely to watch something on social media rather than television therefore I figured that by combining
the two it would be another way to engage the audience as social media is primarily on phones however is
discussed and brought to life through many media platforms for instance television stations reporting news on it,
films and documentaries about social media and its effects but social media has now broken down more barriers as
when I was scrolling through Tik Tok as someone who fits into the target audience age range I came across a
national theatre play called "our generation" this play focuses on what it is like to be a young person in
today's society and the challenges they face with a diverse range of characters the play shows the audience a true
representation of how social media is taking over everyone's lives. I wanted to include snip-it's of this play into my
documentary as not only would it break up talking heads, but it also allows for strong messages to be displayed to
the audience in a new way. Not only would this engage the audience, but it created a USP for my documentary as I
myself have never seen it done before and I have never heard of any documentary that has done this before. I also
explored new video effects that are commonly used in the industry but were new to me such as adding overlays to
clips as well as adding green screen overlays. I decided that within the opening I wanted to add an overlay of an old
VHS tape linking the theme of technology through the different eras. Since I had no experience using an overlay
before I asked some friends, and they were unsure as well therefore I decided to do some research through the
internet and found a tutorial on YouTube. Through this tutorial I was able to follow the instructions to create my
desired effect by selecting the video going to affect controls and then trying the different blend modes to see which
one look the best in this case "screen" produced the best result. To add further variety to the documentary I decided
to add a corresponding overlay to the audio. Since I had no experience using a green screen overlay, I decided to do
some research through the internet and found a tutorial on YouTube. In the search bar on premiere pro, I found the
ultra-key and added it to the overlay which was supposed to remove the green screen however this didnโ€™t work
therefore I selected the video went to affect controls and then trying the different blend modes to see which one
look the best, in this case "darken" produced the best result.
Overall, I am happy with all three products have created and happy with the feedback I
received from the final products. If I were to do anything differently, I may have interviewed
another person to add more variety to the documentary and gathered more stock footage I
could use but overall, I am happy with the result. Doing this project has allowed me to practice
valuable skills that I can carry with me into the industry it has also enabled me to practice
lighting and the manipulation of lighting as well as gaining experience using a microphone. I
have also developed my knowledge of premiere pro and effects I can use to further improve my
products and make it more professional.

BBC Analysis.pptx

  • 3. The first step in creating this piece was that after carrying out extensive research of the client and the audience. I started with a genre that the audience enjoyed found out through my research (Sci-Fi/Horror) and used this when developing my idea. For the cover photo I wanted to create something that linked to the title of the piece as well as highlight issues that would be discussed within the documentary. I also wanted the cover photo to stand out from existing products from the BBC therefore I planned to create an SFX piece that would not only shock the audience but intrigue them into watching the documentary (definition-shockvertising, is a unique tactic where advertisers use provocative, taboo subjects and images to grab the public's attention).Creating an SFX piece for the cover photo also allows me to demonstrate my skills in something I have been studying for months and have a real interest in, it also allows me to stand out and create something truly unique. During production I made my own scar wax for the piece I also did all the blending, colour work/theory and effects. Production was successful, and I was able to create a piece that I was happy with, and I believe the client would be happy with. When creating my piece, I wanted my title to be something that not only engaged the audience but make it something they could relate to. I got the phrase surgically attached from my grandparents who say to me that I am always on my phone it might as well be surgically attached to my hand as I never go anywhere without it and as I fall into the target age audience, I knew this had to be included in the title as if I get told it a lot then this may be something that resonates the intended target audience. As I am from Britain, I wanted to make a documentary that was purely focused on British culture as that was a part of the brief.
  • 4. I also did this as even though I am creating a documentary with a theme that may attract a wide range of audiences as the BBC and subsequently BBC three charge a licensing fee to watch their programs it means they are restricted in what they can produce. One of these rules is that they can't aim to attract a mainstream audience therefore by focusing my documentary on Britain and young people it narrows the potential viewing audience which will then allow me to stay within the rules of BBC making something that not only the client can use but a product the client is happy with. As surgically attached by itself may make the audience believe that it is a medical documentary, I knew that I had to include a sub-clause to reinforce the digital theme of the documentary. As the documentary will talk about the addiction young people have to their phones and subsequently social media, I wanted to include this in the title. However, I also wanted to make the documentary title catchy therefore I wanted to use alliteration however I couldnโ€™t think of an a-word that linked to technology, so I used a digital thesaurus to find a synonym for addiction when I came across devoted which fit in perfectly with the theme of my documentary which left me with :SURGICALLY ATTACHED DIGITALLY DEVOTED BRITAIN.I used photoshop in order to edit my piece using the skills I have developed from past projects and my own experimentation I was able to add extra components playing more into the Horror/Sci-Fi genre. For the background I decided to go for solid black not only did this allow for the colours to pop but it also allowed for details to be showcased. Furthermore, black more often has dysphemistic connotations than other colours and is often connected to darkness, death, decay, and evil deeds which also relates back to horror genre. The other focal colour used is neon green as while green is associated with tranquillity and has a calming effect on both the mind and psyche, neon green can make one feel more alert. Due to the fact that neon colours are ultra-bright, they can be associated with warning and danger.
  • 5. The message behind the cover photo was to highlight that even if they didnโ€™t watch the documentary that it would start conversations as the eye-catching visuals aim to highlight how social media and technology takes over the lives of young people and how young people feel like they couldnโ€™t live without technology. When creating this piece not only did, I broaden my knowledge of photoshop by exploring new techniques, but I also learned how to import fonts into photoshop to make my piece more unique. I believe that the cover photo enabled me to get my message effectively across to the audience whilst engaging them using a shock factor by including horror/sci-fi elements to the piece. When showing a group of people who were within the target audience age range, I received lots of positive comments such as, "visually stunning" and ,"I like the metaphor of being attached to our phones" which proves I was able to convey my message to the audience and they understand how I have portrayed it. My aim for the cover photo was to create something that not only pleased the client and engaged the target audience age demographic but create something that was out of the ordinary and not something audiences are used to seeing as the BBC are not allowed to intentionally attract a mainstream audience it meant that I could create a unique piece and as the producer add a signature style to the piece without the restrictions of having to appeal to a wide range audience giving me more creative power in which direction I wanted the documentary to go and how I wanted to engage my audience allowing me to be able to include and showcase something that I haven't been able to do before due to the nature of past projects. Due to the positive feedback and comments, I have received about the piece I am going to stick to this cover photo with no need to change anything due to the positive comments it has received from a group of the target audience.
  • 7. Concept art ideas and inspiration For my title card I wanted to link it back to the cover photo and keep with the SFX horror/sci-fi theme. I wanted to create something again that not only highlighted the subject matter but would engage the audience and capture their attention. Using this theme allows for continuity to be maintained for audiences however I decided to add different elements to keep the title card and retrospectively the documentary engaging for audiences. For the title card I decided to use a face with more of an old school robot design to link old school and new school technology. I also wanted the title card to reference social media with half of the face as a robot and half of the face done in a modern-day makeup design using colours inspired by the Instagram logo. The aim of my title card is to highlight the issues of social media portraying them in a way that would engage the target audience whilst maintaining continuity with the rest of the documentary.
  • 8. When in the production stage I came across many challenges when creating the piece for example the room was to warm therefore the scar wax melted and became to pliable meaning that the scar wax began to melt off the face. As a side had fallen off and I had to rethink my idea I decided it would look better with only three sides. My final product although it was a bit messy due to the heat of the room causing problems throughout production, I believe I was able to convey my theme of social media and technology taking over the lives of young people. I believe that I was able to showcase my skills in both SFX and wigs however due to the way it looks it the piece will also allow me to showcase my photoshop skills as I transform it into something that appears more technical and robot-like.
  • 9. CHANGING MY IDEA The feedback I received from a group of people within the target audience had mixed reviews about the piece as whilst I received some positive comments such as "Informative, explains what it is about very well" and "Simple but effective" I also received some negative feedback such as "Good concept but the visuals are off- putting" and "I like what is it trying to get across, but I don't understand the image of the girl". Receiving this feedback and talking over it with friends made me come to the conclusion that if I wanted to create a title card that the audience not only understood but engaged with, I needed to go back to the drawing board. I decided that for my new concept I would keep the same lettering, black background and British landmark theme along the bottom, but I would change the image from a robot cyborg to a piece similar to the cover photo in theme but portrayed in a different way. By changing my idea, it also meant that the cover photo and title card would link maintaining continuity between products making it easier for the viewer to identify the two together. As I did receive some positive feedback when I ask for feedback on the new title card I am going to make I will ask the group which one they prefer and why and then make my decision about which title card I will use in the documentary whether I alter the existing to make it better or go with the new one.
  • 10. Since I had to redo my title card, I produced a new idea which allowed me to maintain continuity between products making it easier for the viewer to identify the two together by creating products that looked similar but were unique. The first step in creating this new piece was to review my audience and target research to better establish what worked and what didnโ€™t work for the audience. I still decided to go with the Sci-Fi/Horror genre however being careful to not go to gory as when I received feedback on my last title card the audience made it apparent that they thought it was too off-putting and it would put them off watching the documentary therefore I kept this in mind when creating this piece. For the title card I wanted to create something that linked to the title of the piece as well as highlight issues that would be discussed within the documentary. I also wanted the cover photo and title card to link and be recognised together also making sure that it would stand out from existing products from the BBC therefore I planned to create an SFX piece on my arm similar to that of the cover photo that would not only shock the audience but intrigue them into watching the documentary. For the title card I decided to paint a phone and charger onto my arm suggesting to the audience that whilst the cover photo was plugged into a phone, the phone and charger has now merged into the arm and taken over a metaphor of how social media can affect the way we act, talk and think. I used the same colour scheme for the title card as I used for the cover photo meaning forthe background, I decided to go for solid black as not only did this allow for the colours to pop but it also allowed for details to be showcased. Since neon colours are ultra-bright, they can be associated with warning and danger. During the production and post-production, I learned that at first it is okay to make mistakes and create something that might be wrong for the audience as receiving feedback can help develop ideas and eventually make something that is better suited to the audience as when I asked for feedback on my new title card I received much more positive feedback such as, "I like the title; I feel like it really makes sense with how society is today with technology and social media", "This is less graphic; it isn't as uncomfortable to look at".
  • 12. Upon starting this project, I had some experience of filming but only a 2-minute advertisement. However, through completing the project I learned that I have to film in landscape in order to create something that can be used in the industry I also learned the basics of premiere pro allowing me to learn cuts and transitions as well as how to add wording onto a project, so I had some knowledge about where to begin for this project. For the documentary I wanted to include an interview with someone who works with young people in this case it was a youth worker however I experienced some issues when setting up as I had originally planned to film with the camera facing the wall which would allow me to add my own background however when setting up the shot, I experienced many problems. First of all, as the floor was uneven, I had to adjust each individual tri-pod leg to make sure that the camera was level using the built in levelers on the tri-pod to make sure everything was level. Once it was level however, I occurred another problem which was that the wall I planned to attach the backdrop to was not suitable therefore it fell off the wall and after multiple attempts it would not stick therefore, I had to change the setup of the shot as I didnโ€™t like the look of the original wall for the backdrop of the interview. I therefore decided to change the positioning of the way I would be filming and aimed the camera at the garage door which became a better backdrop than the original one I had planned. This experience allowed me to make decisions quickly and be able to change and go with a new plan, being able to adapt quickly is a skill commonly found within the media industry therefore this experience allowed me to carry out this skill firsthand practicing for the future. As the documentary was quite interview based I wanted the audience to be able to hear what my interviewee was saying at a high quality therefore I used a microphone. The microphone allowed me to capture a high quality sound which my camera was able to pick up and record.it was also my first time reaching out to a charity for an interview which taught me vital communication skills that I could carry with me into my career and the industry and although it was not a possibility to get an interview with young minds, they did give me permission to use existing videos they had created. This allowed me to make my own creative decisions for the documentary and also gave me more experience in adapting original plans and being able to change direction quickly vital for the industry.
  • 13. Through my audience research I knew what the importance of social media was to the audience and how they are much more likely to watch something on social media rather than television therefore I figured that by combining the two it would be another way to engage the audience as social media is primarily on phones however is discussed and brought to life through many media platforms for instance television stations reporting news on it, films and documentaries about social media and its effects but social media has now broken down more barriers as when I was scrolling through Tik Tok as someone who fits into the target audience age range I came across a national theatre play called "our generation" this play focuses on what it is like to be a young person in today's society and the challenges they face with a diverse range of characters the play shows the audience a true representation of how social media is taking over everyone's lives. I wanted to include snip-it's of this play into my documentary as not only would it break up talking heads, but it also allows for strong messages to be displayed to the audience in a new way. Not only would this engage the audience, but it created a USP for my documentary as I myself have never seen it done before and I have never heard of any documentary that has done this before. I also explored new video effects that are commonly used in the industry but were new to me such as adding overlays to clips as well as adding green screen overlays. I decided that within the opening I wanted to add an overlay of an old VHS tape linking the theme of technology through the different eras. Since I had no experience using an overlay before I asked some friends, and they were unsure as well therefore I decided to do some research through the internet and found a tutorial on YouTube. Through this tutorial I was able to follow the instructions to create my desired effect by selecting the video going to affect controls and then trying the different blend modes to see which one look the best in this case "screen" produced the best result. To add further variety to the documentary I decided to add a corresponding overlay to the audio. Since I had no experience using a green screen overlay, I decided to do some research through the internet and found a tutorial on YouTube. In the search bar on premiere pro, I found the ultra-key and added it to the overlay which was supposed to remove the green screen however this didnโ€™t work therefore I selected the video went to affect controls and then trying the different blend modes to see which one look the best, in this case "darken" produced the best result.
  • 14. Overall, I am happy with all three products have created and happy with the feedback I received from the final products. If I were to do anything differently, I may have interviewed another person to add more variety to the documentary and gathered more stock footage I could use but overall, I am happy with the result. Doing this project has allowed me to practice valuable skills that I can carry with me into the industry it has also enabled me to practice lighting and the manipulation of lighting as well as gaining experience using a microphone. I have also developed my knowledge of premiere pro and effects I can use to further improve my products and make it more professional.
