GLUCOMETER
• A glucometer is a
medical device used for
measuring approx level
of glucose in the blood.
Working principle of glucometer
• Determines the of glucose conc. in the blood.
• Based on electrochemical technology ,they
use electrochemical test strips to perform
measurement.
• A small drop of blood to be tested is placed on
a disposable test strip that the glucometer
uses for glucose measurement.
• Strip contain enzyme called glucose oxidase.
This enzyme reacts with glucose in blood
sample and creates acid called gluconic acid.
• Gluconic acid +ferricyanide=ferrocyanide
• Once ferrocyanide is formed ,device run an
electronic current through blood sample on
strip.
• This current is then able to read the
ferrocyanide and determine how much
glucose is in sample of blood on testing strip.
• The number is then displayed on screen of
glucose testing meter.
Factors affecting glucose
measurement
• Temperature
• Humidity
• Altitude
• This is because the rate of enzyme reaction
depends on these factors.
Non- Invasive devices
• Advantage
• Smart
• Portable
• Minimum invasive and user-friendly
• Bloodless
• Painless
• HOMES/self testing
• IN CLINIC
• HOSPITAL
• WEARABLE
• NON-WEARABLE
• TABLE-TOP SYSTEM
Three Types in non-invasive optical
monitoring
• 1.non-invasive optical
monitoring
• 2.Non-invasive fluid
based
• 3.Minimum –invasive
devices
Non invasive optical monitoring
• Based on radiation
passing through
vasculature region of
body.
Non-invasive fluid based devices
• Saliva
• Tear
• Urine
• Sweat sample
Minimum invasive devices
• Insertion of sensor into
subcutaneous tissue
underneath skin.
• Utilized for real time
monitoring
• 1.Scan Bo:60sec Non
invasive Finger
measurements.
• 2.Sugar B-UK based
• Tiny peel place patch
that could be replaced
with new one.
• Transmittor in device
from patch send
wireless reading to the
smartphone via
bluetooth every 5min.
• Free libre 2and 3
• Wearable sensor on
upper arm
• Optical alarm feature
when glucose level
exceeds threshold range
