PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     2   Before  You  Begin   Make  sure:   • You  are  using  Microsoft®  PowerPoint®  2008  for  Mac   • You  have  a  saved  PowerPoint®  presentation  open  on  your  screen  to  work  with   • You  have  your  Toolbox  open     Opening  Your  Toolbox     The  Toolbox  feature  puts  all  of  the  tools  you’ll  need  to  format  and  edit  your  presentation.     Simply  click  on  the  icon  at  the  top  of  the  screen  and  a  box  will  appear  with  quick  links  to   those  tools.       Once  it  is  opened,  the  Toolbox  is  called  the  Formatting  Palette.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     3   1.  Selecting  Text,  Shapes,  and  Graphics   A.  Click  on  View  in  the  toolbar  across  the  top  of  your   screen.     Make  sure  that  Normal  is  selected.           B.  Select  the  slide  to  which  you  want  to   apply  the  animation.                 Select  the  slide  from  the  side  bar  on  the  left.                               C.  Click  on  the  text  box  or  object  that   contains  the  item(s)  you’re  adding   animation  to.           Left  clicking  on  the  text,  graphic,  or  object  selects   that  item.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     4       2.  Opening  the  Custom  Animation  and  Entrance  Effects  Tools     A.  Click  on  the  Star  icon  in  the  Formatting   Palette.                          This  opens  the  Custom  Animation  feature.                               B.  Click  on  the  Green  Star  icon.                    This  opens  the  Entrance  Effect  features  panel.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     5   Click  on  More  Effects  to  select  a  different  entrance  feature.   Simply  click  the  Undo  icon  in  the  menu  bar  at  the  top  of  the   screen  to  undo  the  application  of  the  effect.   3.    Applying  the  Appear  Animation   A.  From  the  Entrance  Effects  panel,  select  Appear.                  A  preview  of  the  animation              will  play  on  the  selected  item(s).                       B.  Click  on  Content  Placeholder  to  open   and  modify.                All  animated  items  will  be  listed.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     6   B.1.    Modifying  the  Appear  Animation  for  Text*     All  Bulleted  text  will  have  the  Appear  animation.    However,  secondary  bullets  and   wrapping  lines  (lines  that  weren’t  created  by  hitting  return  at  the  end)  will  appear  with   their  associated  first  bullet.    You  can  make  any  bullet  or  sentence  appear  on  click.     Note:    In  order  to  add  Appear  animation  to  sentences  not  in  bullet  form,  you  must  edit  them  by  hitting  return   at  the  end  of  the  previous  line.     To  make  secondary  bullets  appear  on  click       1. Click  on  the  Content  Placeholder  for  that   item.                   2. Click  on  the  Start  button.             3. Select  On  Click.                               *  If  you  want  the  secondary  bullets  to  appear  with  the  first,  then  skip  this  section  and  go  to          Step  4.  Applying  Dim  Feature.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     7   B.2.    Modifying  Appearance  Order*     The  objects  you  select  to  appear  are  automatically  arranged  in  order  of  how  they  are   presented  or  in  order  of  selection.    You  can  change  the  arrangement  of  presentation.     To  change  order  of  appearance  for  text,  objects,  or  images       1. Highlight  the  Content  Placeholder  for  the   item  you  want  to  modify.                                 2. Click  the  Up  arrow  or  the  Down  arrow  to   change  the  item’s  order  position.                                 *  If  you  do  not  want  modify  the  appearance  order,  then  skip  this  section  and  go  to            Step  4,  Applying  Dim  Feature.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     8   B.3.    Modifying  the  Timing  of  Appearance*     The  Appearance  animation  is  set  to  a  predetermined  length  of  time.  This  timing  can  be   altered.     Note:  Use  caution  in  applying  the  Timing  feature  as  actual  presentation  execution  can  be  altered.  We   recommend  using  the  On  Click  Feature  instead.   To  modify  Appearance  animation  timing     1. Highlight  the  Content  Placeholder  of  the  item   you  want  to  modify.       2. Click  on  the  Timing  button  at  the  bottom  of  the   Custom  Animation  panel.       3. Enter  the  number  of  seconds  you  want  the   item’s  appearance  to  delay  after  clicking.                                                   *  If  you  do  not  want  to  modify  the  animation  timing,  then  skip  this  section  and  go  to            Step  4.  Applying  Dim  Feature.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     9   4.    Applying  the  Dim  Feature*     The  Dim  feature  is  available  only  with  entrance  effects  animations.  It  deemphasizes  items   as  you  click  to  make  other  items  appear.  It  can  be  used  on  text,  images,  and  objects.     Dim  does  not  automatically  set  up  when  you  select  an  entrance  animation.       A.  Click  on  the  More  Effect  Options  button  on   the  Custom  Animation  panel.                                     B.  Click  on  the  After  Animation  button.                               *  If  you  do  not  want  to  use  dim,  skip  this  section  and  go  to  Step  5.  Checking  Application  of  Features

If  the  color  you  want  is  not   available  in  the  swatches   shown,  then  click  on  More   Colors       Color  will  vary  according  to  color  pallet  selected.     2. For  more  information  about  changing  palette  color  or  creating  your  own   color  pallet,  click  on  the  Help  button  in  the  toolbar  at  the  very  top  of  your   screen.         The  After  Animation  button  will   display  the  color  your  items  will   fade  to.

PowerPoint®  for  Mac  Tutorial:  Using  “Appear  and  Dim”     11   5.    Checking  Application  of  Features     As  with  any  other  document  or  presentation,  checking  the  layout  and  functionality  is   essential.     Before  saving  changes  you’ve  made,  do  the  following:     A. With  the  slide  you  added   animation  to  still  selected,  enter   into  presentation  mode.                                       B. Left  click  through  the  animations   to  make  sure  that  animation   order,  timing,  and  dimming   features  are  correct.

If  the  features  are  not   correct,  exit  presentation   mode  and  repeat  the   steps  necessary  to   address  the  errors.                                 D. If  the  features  are  correct,  exit  presentation  mode  and  save  the  presentation.
