Electronic portfolios are
becoming a popular
alternative to traditional
paper-based portfolios
because they offer
practitioners, peers, and
potential employers the
opportunity to review,
communicate and assess
portfolios in an
asynchronous manner. Use
of an electronic portfolio
provides more accessibility
and easy access to those
you’ll want to review your
portfolio. You can also
incorporate various forms
of multi-media, which also
provides the opportunity to
demonstrate competence in
use of technology. A
traditional portfolio
includes tangible and
original samples and
artifacts, and provides an
opportunity to elaborate on
projects during an
interview.

Every portfolio will be different
as each person’s experiences and
backgrounds are unique. An
electronic portfolio should
contain professional or careerrelated content that expands,
supports and elaborates on what
is found on a resume.
Throughout your academic
career and employment, collect
and preserve documents and
items that should be considered
for inclusion in an electronic
portfolio, and only post a limited
amount of information. Readers
will fail to explore all of the
links provided if too much
content is included. Here are
some things you may want to
include but are certainly not
limited to. Include a welcome
that summarizes who you are
and what visitors will find in
your portfolio. Include a site
map of ways to display links to
your portfolio contents. You
may also want to include a
resume or curriculum vita.
You’ll definitely want to include
samples of your work; this will
be a large component of the
overall portfolio. As an
instructor, you may want to also
include evaluations received in
the past.

Google Docs is another great part of the Google suite
that allows you to create and store files online, which
means you can access them from wherever you have an
internet connection. You can embed text documents,
presentations, or spreadsheets directly from Google
Docs. If you have a PDF, you can provide a link to the
PDF, or attach it as a file and provide a link to the
downloadable file. But note that Sites doesn’t offer
automatic preview for PDFs. We will use the following
steps to add a document, a photo, and a video.
When you have files stored in Google Docs, inserting
lengthy documents is made easy in Sites. To make sure
that a Google document is viewable to site visitors,
publish the document as a web page in Google Docs.
To do this, click on “share,” choose “publish as web
page,” check off “automatically re-publish when
changes are made,” and save. To embed a document in
your site, go to “edit page,” choose “insert,” “drive,”
and then select “document.” A list of your stored
documents will appear. Click on the document you
want to insert and some options will appear.
Inserting other media is easy, and having media to
support your portfolio is important. On the site, go to
the page where you’d like to include an image. On the
top left, click on “insert,” and choose “image.” You’ll
get a choice of “uploaded images” or image from URL.
Choose “uploaded images” and upload the image just
as you would attach one to an email. After the image is
uploaded, a toolbar will appear when you click on it in
edit mode. L-C-R allows you to align it either left,
center, or right. Size options allow you to resize to fit
the page.
Videos can be added in two different ways. The
“insert” menu offers the option to insert a video from
Google Video or YouTube. If you’re using a site like
Vimeo or Flickr, you can manually embed video. On
the edit page toolbar, click on the “html” button. Copy
the embed code from your video-sharing site and paste
it into the text box that pops up.
