WORK EXPERIENCE
September 2014 - Stewart Milne Timber Systems - Witney
Currently employed as Design Technician producing timber-frame production drawings using
Consultec/AutoCAD software.
October 2013 – September 2014 - Lancaster
Total redesign and renovation to a shop and the 6 student flats above. A year long contact for
a client in Lancaster with a deadline to complete by September 2014 to accommodate
university students at the beginning of their academic year. Work included the redesign and
installation of a new shop front. Demolition of all internal walls, flooring and stairs.
Strengthening and levelling of all joists. New internal walls, flooring, stairs, ceilings, bathrooms
and kitchen. Project completed on time.
May 2012 – September 2013 - Lancaster
Renovating an old house for a client in Lancaster, undertaking all damp-proofing, timber
preservation, plastering, framing, plaster-boarding, brickwork and general building work.
Several other smaller general building contracts in and around the Lancaster area.
August 2011 – February 2012 Westhill, Aberdeenshire
Building a large house extension for a client in Aberdeenshire. My responsibilities included all
ground work and foundations, design and fabrication of the timber frame, construction of the
building including all structural and detail work, and liaison with sub contractors.
February 2011- August 2011
Self employed, undertaking maintenance and refurbishment projects for various clients in
Lancaster area.
April 2010 – January 2011 Stewart Milne Group
Employed as an external (self-employed) Design Technician, producing timber-frame
production drawings using MBA software.

Employed in various part-time, temporary jobs in local area.
3. July 2008 – May 2009 Hope Centre Burundi (Africa)
Mid-life gap year. Along with my wife and family we were responsible for designing, building
and raising most of the funds for an orphanage for 45 African children. We moved to Burundi,
Africa in July 2008 to begin the project only returning once the houses had been completed
and the children had moved in to the new houses. (www.HopeCentreBurundi.com) I continue
to be responsible for updating the website and keeping donors informed of how the project is
progressing and co-led a team who visited Burundi in August 2010.
January 2008 – June 2008 Deeside TimberFrame
In an almost identical role to that with Stewart Milne, I was employed with a three-fold role of:
CAD software installation, MBA (Consultec) timber frame software trainer, and timber frame
designer for the company's large projects.
February 2001 – December 2007 Stewart Milne Group
Employed to assist with software support in a new factory and drawing office in Witney
(Oxfordshire). Responsibilities included training all the new and existing drawing office
designers in use of the new software tools added to AutoCAD.
On satisfactory completion of this project, moved into the IT department and maintained all of
the companies 60 AutoCAD licences and provided software support for AutoCAD as
requested. The role also included the setting up and support of computer hardware.
When the Timber Systems Division in Westhill was in need of a Technical Trainer I took on this
role which included training and support for all of the drawing office staff in Timber Systems.
August 1999– February 2001 Mono Design
Self employed using AutoCAD and MBA Timber Frame Design Software to produce timber
frame drawings for several timber frame companies such as Stewart Milne, Robertson's,
Tayside Homes, D.J Laing and others.
June 1998 – August 1999 Greenfield Homes
Combined role as Contract Manager / Site Agent for a small Timber Frame company
October 1997 – January 1998 Arbroath College
Studied AutoCAD and completed an AutoCAD course.
November 1987 - October 1997 – Building Company – Carr Construction
Director of a small building company which employed both salaried staff and sub-contractors.
The company obtained a good reputation for quality workmanship, and was listed with local
councils, chemical preservation companies and insurance companies as approved contractors.
Financial difficulties, however, forced the company to close.
1986 – 1987 Recording Studio
Built and managed a small recording studio on a voluntary basis for one year.

After leaving school, worked as a musical instrument repair assistant and was latterly put in
charge of the repair workshop.

Personal Skills:
I have excellent personal communication skills, both face to face and via the telephone. I have
particular IT experience in audio, timber frame CAD and CAM systems, but also a good
general knowledge of IT hardware and software, having built computers from individual
components and installed custom software. In addition I have a very good general knowledge
of building having completed many building projects on my own, including concrete and
cement work, timber frame construction, tiling, plastering, plumbing (including central heating)
and electrical work.
