This document summarizes a lesson about the book of Colossians. It discusses how Paul wanted the Colossians' hearts to be comforted and knit together in love by understanding the mysteries of God, Christ, and the Father. It explains that Christ's supremacy and sufficiency is emphasized in refuting the Gnostic heresy, which taught that Christ was not enough and deeper secret knowledge was needed. The lesson emphasizes that Jesus, as God, is sovereign over all and the source of all wisdom.

Week 18
2. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“For I would that ye knew what great
conflict I have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as have not
seen my face in the flesh…” (Col. 2:1)
“Conflict” is agōn (ἀγων), continuing the metaphor of Colossians 1:29 in
the word “striving,” agōnizomai (ἀγωνιζομαι).
3. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“That their hearts might be comforted,
being knit together in love, and unto all
riches of the full assurance of
understanding, to the acknowledgement
of the mystery of God, and of the Father,
and of Christ…” (Col. 2:2)
4. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“Hearts” – Today
we use the word
“heart”
than they did in
the New
Testament
5. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“That their hearts might be comforted,
being knit together in love, and unto all
riches of the full assurance of
understanding, to the acknowledgement
of the mystery of God, and of the Father,
and of Christ…” (Col. 2:2)
“That their hearts might be comforted” - “Comforted” is parakaleō
(παρακαλεω), “to call near”, “encouraged, confirmed, strengthened.”
6. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“That their hearts might be comforted,
being knit together in love, and unto all
riches of the full assurance of
understanding, to the acknowledgement
of the mystery of God, and of the Father,
and of Christ…” (Col. 2:2)
“Knit together” is the Greek word, sumbibazō soom-bib-ad'-zo and
means “to unite” or “to bring together”.
7. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“…and unto all riches of the full
assurance of understanding, to the
acknowledgement of the mystery of God,
and of the Father, and of Christ…” (Col.
2:2b)
“Understanding” - “Understanding” is Gk. sunesis and refers to applying
biblical principles to everyday life. This is something that only Christians
can do with the power of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). Knowing the truth
and acting on it leads to a “full assurance of understanding”.
8. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“…and unto all riches of the full
assurance of understanding, to the
acknowledgement of the mystery of God,
and of the Father, and of Christ…” (Col.
2:2b)
Part “b” of Colossians 2:2 takes us back to some of the truths about the
Godhead that Paul was laying down in chapter one about the deity of
Jesus Christ. These truths were taught in light of the impending Gnostic
heresy
9. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“to the acknowledgement of the mystery
of God, and of the Father, and of
Christ…In whom are hid all the treasures
of wisdom and knowledge…” (Col. 2:2b-
3)
The Gnostics taught that Christ could not have become flesh—matter was
evil—how could a holy God become flesh? They taught that Christ
wasn’t enough—you had to pursue the deeper knowledge that only a few
could find. Paul refuted this kind of teaching with his Christology.
10. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
Christ’s preeminence and sufficiency in all things.
Christ as the center of the universe, not only as the
active Creator but also as the recipient of creation—in
His taking on of human flesh.
Christ was and is the visible image of the invisible
God, containing within Himself the fullness of Deity
11. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
Jesus is sovereign (because He’s God),
Jesus is above all things with an authority given Him
by the Father.
Jesus is Head over the church.
12. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“to the acknowledgement of the mystery
of God, and of the Father, and of
Christ…In whom are hid all the treasures
of wisdom and knowledge…” (Col. 2:2b-
3)
The Gnostics were bringing all these new philosophies and (empty)
traditions, but they weren’t according to Christ (Col. 2:8). The
Colossians needed assurance when it came to the deity of Jesus Christ
and His preeminence, so Paul preached Christ.

But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who of God is made
to us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and
redemption; so that, according as it is written,
“He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”
(1 Corinthians 1:30-31)
