The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ
1. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Grace Bible Baptist Church
Adult Sunday School Class
Room 204
Teacher: Pastor Chuck Brooks
Week 19
2. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 18
“…and unto all riches of the full
assurance of understanding, to the
acknowledgement of the mystery of God,
and of the Father, and of Christ…” (Col.
2:2b)
“Understanding” - “Understanding” is Gk. sunesis and refers to applying
biblical principles to everyday life. This is something that only Christians
can do with the power of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). Knowing the truth
and acting on it leads to a “full assurance of understanding”.
3. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
“…and unto all riches of the full
assurance of understanding, to the
acknowledgement of the mystery of God,
and of the Father, and of Christ…” (Col.
2:2b)
Part “b” of Colossians 2:2 takes us back to some of the truths about the
Godhead that Paul was laying down in chapter one about the deity of
Jesus Christ. These truths were taught in light of the impending Gnostic
heresy
4. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
Christ’s preeminence and sufficiency in all things.
Christ as the center of the universe, not only as the
active Creator but also as the recipient of creation—in
His taking on of human flesh.
Christ was and is the visible image of the invisible
God, containing within Himself the fullness of Deity
“to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God,
and of the Father, and of Christ…In whom are hid
all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge…”
(Col. 2:2b-3)
5. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
Jesus is sovereign (because He’s God),
Jesus is above all things with an authority given Him
by the Father.
Jesus is Head over the church.
“to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God,
and of the Father, and of Christ…In whom are hid
all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge…”
(Col. 2:2b-3)
6. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
“to the acknowledgement of the mystery
of God, and of the Father, and of
Christ…In whom are hid all the treasures
of wisdom and knowledge…” (Col. 2:2b-
3)
The Gnostics were bringing all these new philosophies and (empty)
traditions, but they weren’t according to Christ (Col. 2:8). The
Colossians needed assurance when it came to the deity of Jesus Christ
and His preeminence, so Paul preached Christ.

Week 18
Joel Olsteen says,
“God wants us to prosper
financially, to have plenty
of money, to fulfill the
destiny He has laid out for
us…”

The Cross
happened
because there
was something
special about
you that made
Christ want to
die for you.

10. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who of God is made
to us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and
redemption; so that, according as it is written,
“He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”
(1 Corinthians 1:30-31)
11. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
“to the acknowledgement of the mystery
of God, and of the Father, and of
Christ…In whom are hid all the treasures
of wisdom and knowledge…” (Col. 2:2b-
3)
“Hidden” – is the Greek word apokruphos, from which we get our
English word apocrypha. It was used by the false teachers to refer to the
writings containing their secret knowledge. But nothing “hidden” needs
to be added to Christ for us to gain salvation and sanctification.
12. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
“…and this I say, lest any man should
beguile you with enticing words... (Col.
2:4)
“Beguile” – paralogizomai – “to deceive”. The real threat was that the
Colossians might be deceived by a fast line or by smooth talk. The
church had to learn to see beyond the fine-sounding language of the
heretics to the empty and damning arguments they were presenting. Thus,
it was to grow in the knowledge of Christ to avoid the deceitful traps of
heretical arguments.

The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
Another example of
heresy..
Oneness Pentecostalism.
This group, also know as “Jesus Only”
Christians deny the Trinity. They believe in
modalism, that there is only one God who
appears in three different modes. Sometimes
He’s the Father, sometimes He’s the Son and
sometimes He’s the Spirit but God is never
all three persons at the same time.
14. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
“…and this I say, lest any man should
beguile you with enticing words... (Col.
2:4)
“enticing words” – pithanologia, pith·an·ol·og·ee·ah - is speech
adapted to persuade, discourse in which probable arguments are adduced.
In a bad sense, persuasiveness of speech, erroneous discourse leading
others into error.
17. Colossians
The Supremacy and Sufficiency
of Jesus Christ
Week 19
“…For though I be absent in
the flesh, yet am I with you in
the spirit, joying and
beholding your order, and
the stedfastness of your faith
in Christ. (Col. 2:5)
