God the Son is the second person of the Trinity in Christian theology. The doctrine of the Trinity identifies Jesus as God the Son, who is co-eternal with and united in essence to God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. As the second person of the Trinity, God the Son pre-existed before his incarnation as Jesus and continues to exist after with the Father and Holy Spirit. The term "God the Son" reflects the later theological understanding of Jesus' divinity derived from interpretations of references to him as the "Son of God" in the New Testament.
