This document discusses lessons learned from the 10 year history of the Amazon Kindle and its impact on book publishing. It summarizes that initially there were fears the Kindle would cause the "death of books", but in reality ebook and paper book sales both increased. The key lessons are: 1) Don't worry so much about unknown future changes, as predictions often don't come true; 2) Individuals have power to shape the future through their actions today; and 3) What endures is humanity's need for connection, so the future remains human-centered. The overarching message is that worrying about unknown future changes serves only to diminish enjoyment of the present.

REALLY?
That got me thinking about how we often
worry about something before it happens...
10 YEARS AGO IT WAS THE DEATH OF BOOKS.
TODAY, IT IS THE DEATH OF JOBS

5. SO WHAT?
Well, what can we learn from the
changes brought about by the Kindle
and the digitalisation of books?

6. LESSON #1:
STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE
FUTURE
IT IS EASY TO LET FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN WEIGH US DOWN.
YES, THERE WILL BE CHANGE (& LOT'S OF IT) BUT OFTEN WHAT WE
FEAR TODAY DOESN'T EVENTUATE.
AS WE LOOK BACK AND KNOW THE KINDLE DIDN'T HERALD THE
END OF BOOKS, WE SHOULDN'T FEAR AUTOMATION OR AI BEING
THE END OF JOBS, OR HUMANS, FOR THAT MATTER.

7. LESSON #2:
YOU HAVE THE POWER
THE FUTURE IS NOT JUST SOMETHING THAT
HAPPENS TO US. EVERYTHING WE DO TODAY,
EVERY ACTION WE TAKE SHAPES THE FUTURE.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO LOOK INTO THE FUTURE, NOT
WITH WORRY OR FEAR, INSTEAD WITH CURIOSITY
AND WONDER. EXPLORE WHAT MIGHT BE
POSSIBLE. CONSIDER WHAT IS CHANGING NOW,
AND WHAT MAY CHANGE IN THE FUTURE.
DISCOVER WHAT OPPORTUNITIES THE FUTURE
OFFERS YOU.
AND DO SOMETHING TODAY TO TAKE YOU A STEP
CLOSER TO THE FUTURE YOU WANT.

8. LESSON #3:
THE FITTEST WILL
ALWAYS SURVIVE
COMPANIES, PRODUCTS AND PEOPLE WILL SURVIVE
AND THRIVE IN THE FUTURE, THROUGH:
ADAPTABILITY
RESOURCEFULNESS
OPENNESS
RESILIENCE
AUTHENTICITY
VITALITY
AND BY HOLDING ON TO WHAT IS IMPORTANT

9. LESSON #4:
THE FUTURE IS HUMAN
CONNECTION IS KEY.
JUST AS BOOKS HAVE REMAINED AN INTEGRAL WAY FOR US TO
CONNECT WITH SOMETHING BEYOND OURSELVES, OUR
OVERRIDING HUMAN NEED FOR CONNECTION WILL ENDURE ALL
OTHER CHANGES
AS THE PENDULUM SWINGS BACK TOWARDS A BALANCE, OUR
FUTURE WILL BE A HUMAN CENTRED ONE

10. LESSON #5:
STOP WORRYING
ABOUT THE FUTURE
WORRY AND FEAR ONLY
SERVE TO ROB YOU OF THE
ENJOYMENT OF TODAY
