Preparation for Dissertation
When second year concluded of BA Film, I was approached by many directors throughout the summer and when third year
began but I decided to work as a producer on a project directed by Anna Parcerisas, a production manager for Claudia
Koranteng and Mariam Harutyunyan, and production assistant for the following team: Simon James and Daniel Tempel-
Merzougui, Catarina Ribeiro and Katrina Ytteborg and George Vaz Rocha and Glendha Santos. But with any film
production not everything goes according to plan and difficult situations are encountered and thus some productions fell
through in third year of BA Film, including my own. I am no longer producer for Parcerisas film Natia and instead became a
co-producer for Santos film Faith. The following are documents and records of my Professional Development Portfolio and
touches upon the productions I’ve worked on in my dissertation year.

Presentation Pitch for Natia Dissertation Project
My presentation pitch for Natia as the producer of the dissertation project did not go so well, I was nervous, perhaps
because of the magnitude of the project and how challenging and ambitious it was and went overtime, but I have learned a
lot on how I can improve for future presentation pitches.
The following are images of my presentation pitch for Natia and I have attached some parts of a script I prepared for the
presentation pitch.

Presentation Pitch Script
“Hello my name is Chandra Khan and I am producing a 12-minute film for Anna Parcerisas.
A) This is a short film and as my director has high-lighted synopsis and underlying themes are as follows:
B) 'Leaving Georgia during the civil war as a child, Natia returns home when she hears news of her grandmother drawing
her last breath, and through the journey she uncovers a shocking secret regarding her grandfather that destroys her views
forever.'
Now what is this secret?
Natia idolized her grandfather and loved him deeply and she finds out from her grandmother that she was a child bride. It
reflects one aspect of Georgian culture, where men were allowed to kidnap young females they wanted and force them
into marriage. When she discovers this secret which was hidden from her by her whole family, it completely destroys her
views and everything she believed in.
C. The underlying themes are:
Choices: actions of others affecting loved ones
Culture: unlocking one to the darkest side of Georgian culture- child kidnapping
Curiosity- Oxford dictionary states 'a strong desire to know or learn something', Natia wants to search for the truth that us
being hidden from her, this element is s driving force of our story'
D. My director had gone through the tone and style for our film.
F. We haven't specified our target audience yet but we will consider the following to further define our viewers:
geographic, demographic/ socioeconomic, psychographic and behavioral aspects.
G. The best method of marketing and distributing our film will be through several film festivals, majority of them will based
in the United Kingdom, predominantly in London. I believe this is the best way of getting our film screened among our
target audience. Film festivals include, London Short Film Festival, UK Film Festival, Portobello Film Festival and Encounters
Festival. There will also be screenings taking place in Georgia too.
A. As a filmmaker I often find myself drawn to subjects exploring the human condition and how our lives intertwine with
bigger issues. The framework of this story is similar to my other films where my protagonist is facing an obstacle and how
they choose to respond to it is down to their characteristics and circumstances.
Human condition is "the characteristics, key events and situations which compose the essential of human existence such as
birth, growth, emotionality, aspiration, conflict and mortality.
A. The question for me while I was researching for my film was why Georgia? Why should we film there and not elsewhere?
For me it was a matter of exploring Georgia, Tbilisi, whether it was the streets, the culture, the society, its full of character
and the location mirrors our script, and the world we want to create therefore, making it essential to film there. The film
works provided are influences for our film and Anna has spoken of their significance.
Cast
We have our character biographies and we will be sourcing our actors in Georgia. We plan to conduct auditions in the
beginning of January.
21. BA Film Production Work | 21
Crew
Anna did a recce in the beginning of October and met essential people who will help us on this production. There are some
roles and names missing from this list because I still need to confirm them. Vital roles are editor, sound designer and
recordist.
Equipment
We will take some of the equipment from Middlesex University and we have three people who will take some equipment
out for us from their university in Georgia.
Location
All of these images here, including embedded within my PowerPoint were taken on potential locations from Anna. Filming
permission won't be a hassle as my production manager there knows exactly what to do to secure permission. Also
everything is approximately 10 minutes from each other, all central Tbilisi.
The exterior locations are being taking care of and the interior locations rights have been secured for where majority of our
film will take place.
Budget
Talk about funding campaign strategy and advertising campaign ready to be launched, just need confirmation - social
media sites and production website dedicated to our film.
Schedule
Talk about timeframe of production

Meetings for ALL PRODUCTIONS
Throughout the whole summer and third year I’ve had many meetings on the productions I was working on and I only kept
a record of a few of them and I have attached them on this document:
Natia
Natia Notes
Anna sent me the following images of Georgia and why it is important to film there during the recce
48. BA Film Production Work | 48
July 31st Anna leaves - first week of October
•Turkey, 8-hour flight, £100 per person
Synopsis- a girl on an adventure in Turkey
Anna knows someone who could help us, Marta, can also be our guide, she also knows film crew and authorities to contact
for filming permission
Mainly speak English, food and rent is cheap
Photography pieces of areas are beautiful
Need to do a recce with essential crew and test equipment in the environment and organize a test shoot if recce is
successful - analyze production crew and talk to EVERYONE! From landlord to police, etc.
Funding - research more, create fan base on social media
Pitch in November and start in October
Aurora - Italian woman moving to Georgia - three months in a relationship, she's a passionate person but a difficult
character, her boyfriend is caring and respectful
Public liability insurance- check what university covers and legal paperwork
List legal paperwork; visa, filming permits, public liability insurance, etc.
49. BA Film Production Work | 49
Story: two days before the central character’s break-up. Destruction and beauty of the city is a symbolism of the couple’s
relationship. They discover their conflict and it ultimately destroy their relationship. Filming mainly in central Tbilisi,
Georgia. We have transport and potential locations are home, streets and broken buildings. Occupation: man (finance) and
woman (artist) and they move to Georgia because of his work or for family reasons. Bring their emotions through
arguments - extreme and show passion they have for each other. The connection between her and the place - message.
Finance: flights, travel, gas, rent, food, etc. £3000??? Fundraising: charge people money to teach them how to use
technical equipment. Black magic camera and sound equipment from Middlesex University.
Pegasus flights and recce in October and filming in February.
Structure for Meeting with David and Eddie:
1. Story
2. Connections - film crew, driver, actors etc.
3. Schedule
4. Budget
5. Plans during summer
Meeting with David and Eddie:
What does the man and the city reflect?
The man and the place has a reason to existing in the film. Voyage into Italy, Island of Sicily, Land of God - trilogy films -
Robert Rossellini. Treatment with visuals. Weather report - extremely cold. Auditions - still cast potential actors for film.
Finance: Georgia border and British Embassy in Georgia for funding. In Bloom "interesting and highly unusual". Landmark
Georgian film. PACAN - kit information £500 (a month to process paper works). Timetable for third year, first term will be
available end of July but officially late September.
Questions for Meeting with Marta
1. I was wondering if you could help us with finance? Or if you could inform us how some of the things cost in Tbilisi e.g.
transport, food, etc.
2. Would you happen to know the most spoken language in Tbilisi, Georgia? Or at least in the area where you took photos
of? As Anna would very much like to shoot scenes in those areas. And if need be, would you know people who could be our
translators?
3. Anna spoke of a film crew in Tbilisi that could help us on our production: Could you tell me more about them? What do
they specialize in? Do they have a portfolio of work that I can access?
4. Anna informed me that the film crew could potentially loan is some equipment from their university: Could you confirm
this for me, please? Will they work for free? Could they provide me a full list of equipment they are willing to lend us for our
production? And their loan store condition e.g. does their university only loan the equipment for three days?
5. Anna also informed me there is someone who could be our car driver: May I know more about him? Will he be available
for a few days October? We plan to do a full recce then. Will he be available for a week in February? We plan to shoot our
film then. We will be paying for gas, could be give us a rough estimate of the cost of gas per day? May I also know the made
and model of his car? This is so I can see how big the vehicle is and how many people can, including the equipment can fit
in.
6. I may potentially need another driver; would you happen to know anyone else who is willing to help us? We'll of course
pay for their gas too. If it that's not the case, would you happen to know the transport system there? Could you tell me
50. BA Film Production Work | 50
about it, please? How much would it cost? Anna would like to film in the locations you took photos of, how far away would
it be from the accommodation we will be staying at?
7. Locations, the photos you took, are they quite close to the place of residence we will be staying at? Along with
supermarket/ local grocery stores, hospital, police station?
8. Anna informed me the place of residence we could be potentially staying at, are we able to film some scenes there? Will
the owners mind? Is the accommodation free? If not, how much would it be for roughly four days in October and a week in
February? How many people can it accommodate? Will we have permission to use most things e.g. oven etc.
9. Filming permissions, would you happen to have some forms we could fill in? Would you know how long it will take for
forms to process e.g. location release forms. We would need to have filming permits and contact local authorities and
police station on prior to shoot, so I would like to contact and speak to everyone in Tbilisi when we arrive in October.
10. Flights, Anna informed me about Pegasus and that out have experience using it, would you happen to know some
information about their baggage limit, etc.?
11 Would you happen to remember the address/ area you took your photos? As Anna would very much like to film some
scenes in those areas.

Urgent Care
Notes from meetings with Daniel Tempel-Merzougui & Simon James
Build on set in G231 or TV studio - looks promising
Black comedy, 5 minutes
Story run down - A&E room, surreal, security guard desperately wants to sit down, it's an extremely humid day. Other
characters Laura, Charles, Norman, Fred and an old lady. A little and quick flashbacks of their individual stories and how
they ended up in the A&E room - in the style of TV series Sherlock (split screen). Meaning: temptations and desires
ultimately made them end up in the A&E room. It will be two days shoot in December and filming on F7 RAW. Look: stylish
professional grain film. Design: A&E sign, vinyl floor, leaflets etc. Crew: Bogdan (dop), Jana (sound designer), Ardeshir
(gaffer), Glendha and Anna (art designers).
£200
Produce a schedule - enquire about everyone's availability
Laura:
Wardrobe: High heels, mini shirt and pink top
Make-up/hair: Blonde
Locations: Bedroom, club and toilet
Props/others: Strove lights, bag
Charles:
Wardrobe: Business wear
Make-up/hair: Trim cut, bleeding/ bruised face
Meeting
Spider web, spider, fly - beginning sequences
Andrew Pomphrey - studied art design - best person to discuss art design
G231 or TV studio room - four days
Line producer and coproduction is better
What are you trying to say? Getting punished for perusing their desires recklessly but there is s danger of moralizing - be
careful with Laura story.
Pop psychology- Hollywood films
Making flashback relevant to the present as opposed for an explanation of their story
Movie magic - check legal forms such as budgeting

Story changed, still about temptation but there are elements of four pillars of society; family (security guard), religion
(priest), business (lady) and government (guy). Message is a social commentary on society.
Temptation still the basis - section of these pillars gives more meaning to:
Religion - control - sex
Business - power - money
Government - power and control - limelight/ influence 'the podium'

Conclusion
In conclusion, I assisted and contributed on a few productions during my final year of BA Film at Middlesex University and
this document is evidence to a few examples of work I completed on those productions. It has been a turbulent and
unpredictable year, but I have enjoyed working closely with friends who I intend to work with in future productions. The
most important thing I have learned is how film production does not always go to plan and projects fall through however,
finding inner strength and learning a lot about yourself gives you even greater knowledge and drive for success, as I have
found out during my final dissertation year and it has only fuels my ambition to flourish as a film maker, who is specializing
in producing.
