2. 2
Where are we now?

3. Manufacturing in Industry 2.0
Industry 2.0 (Mass production lines, with auto/ semi auto
machinery)
-products are mass produced in production line by machine. Some
assembly process perform manually.
-machine operation run by electric motors, hydraulic cylinders or
pneumatic actuators.
-control system run by hard-wired relay or microprocessor PLC
(programmable logic controller).
-QC done by visual inspection.

4. Manufacturing in Industry 3.0
Industry 3.0 (Robotic & Factory Automation)
-machine operation are fully automated power by latest industrial components
with higher speed, higher accuracy and more energy efficient.
-Robotic and multi-axis handling arm are widely used in production line to
replace man-manual operation or uses in hazardous environment.
-control system run by computer or advance controller which can perform
numerical calculation, data operation and high speed communication.
Integration of HMI (human machine interface) bring more intuitive operation
interface and information display.
-QC system are more comprehensive with implements of laser sensors or
vision system for measurement and inspection.

5. China World Factory
While cost is the most considerable factor in manufacturing, China emerge as
the “World Factory” with it cheapest manufacturing cost. Manufacturing
sectors in China are grew faster compare to other country. Many Chinese
brand had established it place in consumer world for it cheaper yet quality
products.
The raised of China ‘World Factory’ lead to fall of others country’s
manufacturing industries. This force others country to implements Factory
Automation for more efficient, cost effective and better quality productions.
Recently, China facing tougher manufacturing environment, with rising cost in
labour, material & energy as well as environmental & health issue. Which,
force them to implement Factory Automation.

6. Industry 4.0
Latest trend in the industry, the Industry Revolution 4.0, lead by
German, had give big impact to manufacturing sector. To bring back
factory & jobs to Europe, the revolution technologies using cyber
physical network, Internet of Thing, Big Data & IA computing to further
enhance productivity.
Company like ADIDAS, BMW, Mercedes etc, had implemented the
system to their production line created so call “Smart Factory”. With
the intelligence system, manufacturing activities are more efficient and
cost effective.
Production are ship back to Europe thanks to the new technology.

7. Manufacturing Sector Today
Today, manufacturing sector in Malaysia, especially SME, trapped, in low-tech low-cost man-
operated production system. Many company rely heavily on foreign worker to run the production
line. Robotic & Factory Automation is the key to breakthrough this in order to compete with
region country or globally.
Region country such as Thailand, Indonesia & Vietnam are favor by foreign investor for it cheaper
production cost compare to Malaysia. Though, Robotic & FA are started to emerge in production
line in these country to improve productivity & quality.
Back by government, SME sector in Malaysia are urge to implement Robotic & Factory
Automation to manufacturing system. With the help by Engineering Company & OEM as well as
training & education, Factory Automation technologies in Malaysia become more mature.
Top Malaysian manufacturer such as TOP GROVE implemented Factory Automation in production
line. Productivity are greatly enhance with better quality while production cost are reduced.
Although Industry 4.0 might take 5-10 years to become norm, we need to speed up in order to
ride along the revolutionary wave.
