Electrical Discharge Machining, or EDM was discovered by two independent teams, one in the USSR and one in America, the American team included Harold W. Stark, the founder of Electro Arc
3. 1770
Joseph Priestly originally discovered the erosive effect of
electrical discharges in 1770.
Boris and Natalya Lazarenko conducted research in the USSR that led to
the development of the resistor-capacitor (R-C) circuit for EDM.
1943
1943
American Team - Harold Stark, Victor Harding and Jack Beaver made a
breakthrough in technology developing a machine to remove broken bolts
and taps by creating a machine capable of making 60 arc per second.
4. Harold W. Stark Patented the
Metal Disintegrator in 1945
The inital breakthrough in technology that led to this
patent worthy technology would lead to the delopment of
Die-sinker EDM as we know it today.
Harold Stark started Electro Arc in May 1946, and the
patent for these machines was approved in 1951
5. 1960-1970
Die Sinker and Wire EDM is developed
This technology was readily accepted by most of the
world, America took longer to embrace this new
technology because the workforce and existing
technology was used widely in manufacturing
