Meet the Charger Staff for Spring 2009:
              Nancy Vu
               President
“I have been part of the Charger Magazine Staff for 3 semesters. As the
president of the staff there is a lot of work and stress put on me. I love helping to create
a great magazine that is made by students for our students at Pin Oak. It is a real
honor to represent the Charger Staff as President with my partner in crime Darryl
Dorsey the Vice President. The Charger Staff this semester was an amazing group to
work with. They are dedicated to making an amazing magazine for our POMS family.”

              Darryl Dorsey
               Vice President
“Being a part of the Charger staff has been very fun. I like working with people to
get the magazine finished. This is my second semester being on the Charger staff.”

              Carolina Ayala
                Editor in Chief
“This is my second semester being part of the Charger Magazine staff, it has
              been an amazing experience.”

              Courtney Gonzales
                Treasurer
“This is my first semester in the Charger Magazine, and I am honored to be
voted as the treasurer. Charger Magazine is probably the best elective I’ve ever
              picked.”

              Brian Juarez
“Being in the Charger class has been a great experience. This is my fourth
semester and it has been great and Ms. Powell is awesome. She has helped me out
with my pages on many occasions to make them better than they were before.”

                                                            2
Brian Celis
“Being a part of this fantastic magazine has been an awesome experience. From
beginning to end, I have enjoyed every single moment. I have been here for two full
semesters. Although many of my friends have been here longer, I have had such a fun time
that I will never forget this class. I will leave middle school very happy and content!”

Dylan Velez
“I really like working here because, what could you dislike about computers and
working with other people?”

Michael Zimmermann
“This is my second semester being in the Charger Magazine class. I really like working
on pages and making stuff that people enjoy reading. Ms. Powell is a great teacher and the
magazine is a really neat class to be in!”

Sakia Hodge
“For my first semester as a member of the Charger Magazine staff, it has become my
favorite class and I love Ms. Powell. Everyone is great too. I have also learned so much!”

Chris Lydick
“I’ve been here for 2 years. I’ve gone through the interview process, submission time
and I’ve interviewed new members. It can be difficult, but I love the challenges that this class
brings!”

Rebekah Griesheimer
“This is my first time in the Charger Magazine class and I love taking pictures.”

8th Grade Events
8th grade is a very cool year, but it is also serious. This is an important year
because it is when you move into high school and when you begin to think about
what you want to be and do in life. The 3-2-1 has begun and it’s really hard trying
to stay out of trouble. In order to get on the bus to Schlitterbahn, 8th graders need
to AVOID getting 3 school wide detentions, 2 in-school suspensions, and 1 at-
home suspension.

Making History in
   Washington D.C. …
We are back in Texas and the experience was great!
For the students who visited D.C., the experience was
amazing, although many of them missed their friends
from other states such as New Mexico, Alaska,
Nebraska, Arizona, Georgia, and of course, Texas. We
stayed in the Marriot Crystal City hotel. We made sure
that we visited every monument in the area. The most
visited one was the Lincoln Memorial. My favorite
museum was the American Smithsonian Museum. It
had many legendary artifacts such as Michael
Jordan's Jersey, the original Kermit the Frog and the
Hip Hop Era with its Boom Box Players. The biggest
place was the Newseum, its was mostly about being a
reporter for news and what's happening in our
country. We enjoyed food and all the festivities. We
survived many long walks in the cold. Some of us
even got frostbitten every day including myself. But
we experienced some bad timing during the
inauguration when we had to ride the metro at 6:30am
and it was so full no one had more than 5 inches of
space. When the teachers told us we were going to a
concert featuring Beyonce, Shakira, Usher, Will.i.am
from the Black Eyed Peas, and Stevie Wonder, we
were amazed. To our surprise, there was more to
singing. Speeches were made by celebrities such as
George Lopez, Tom Hanks, and Kumar. People were
happy and proud of being there for the first African
American President of the United States, Barack
Obama. History was made and we were a part of that
history. I will never forget my experiences in
 Washington.

Leadership
Leadership is the ability to get people to follow voluntarily to accomplish a
task. A leader is someone who gives orders, keeps organized, and guides
others to success. Making your own choices is better than following someone
else’s because it can always be a mistake that you chose to make.
A follower is the kind of person that has the ability to be a leader, but
chooses not to. Many people choose, what they think is cool, what their peers
do, because they want to seem “cool” too. In reality, it isn’t cool to choose a
bad decision, and many people do actually believe that. If your friends
encourage you to choose the “cool” decisions, then maybe they aren’t the right
friends for you.
Leadership isn’t always good. Take the holocaust for example, Adolf Hitler
was the leader of the Nazis (National Socialist Worker’s Party), and became
the leader of Germany in 1933. He convinced all ‘Aryans’(Germans) to follow
him and join the Nazis. Since he was the ruler of Germany, the Germans
decided to listen to him and joined. Hitler believed that Jews were sub-human
and were seen as biologically inferior to the superiority of the ‘Aryans’. He
decided to segregate all Jews, handicaps, Gypsies (nomadic Romans), and
homosexuals from his people. His followers never tried to stop it, and let
eleven million people die. Six million of them were Jews, up to 250,000 of
them were Gypsies, and 1.5 million were children.
Abraham Lincoln is known as the best president in U.S. History. He was a
good leader because he made a lot of changes while he was in office, these
were all good changes. Since he came into office while the United States was
still at war, he never changed what he was fighting for. He fought for the
United States without slavery and didn’t stray away from that. But, his
Generals weren’t listening to his instruction and didn’t perform so he had to
shuffle things around quite a bit. He stayed on course on what he believed in
even though it wasn’t an easy task. He never criticized anyone, neither
personally nor publicly. He never went to public and criticized the leaders he
was replacing. He had a passion to keep the nation together and he did just
that.
Being a leader not only takes courage but also responsibility. To be a
leader, you need to make good choices and think before you make a mistake.
There’s nothing necessarily wrong with being a follower, but being a leader is
something that you ought to be, and you’ll be valued by others.

Are you ready to step up and be a leader?

Teacher Talk

Do you like taking tests? Do you use any type of special test-taking
strategies? Do you turn in your homework on time? On this page, you
will find some advice from one of our teachers from 8C. These tips are
very important, so maybe using them will give you an advantage over
other people who don’t:

            Ms. Furnari says..
“Use your planner, don’t wait until the last minute to turn in your
work, and check your cluster blog regularly. Also when taking tests,
don’t forget to highlight, underline, take good notes on the margins
and double check your work whenever you finish. When you’re
doing your homework, make a real effort, not just an effort to get it
done. Make sure you leave nothing blank. Your parents can help
you get organized and check your work, but they can’t do it for
            you.”

            Mr. Gomez says
“Make sure to write the due date of your homework in your planner.
Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning before a test, and when you
need to present your homework, make sure you present it at the
beginning of class, just in case if we need to review the homework
assignment. Your parents also need to check the cluster’s website
to make sure it matches the student’s planner.”

Now it’s up to you choose what you want to do.
You either listen to your teachers and succeed, or
you don’t and you fail. It’s very easy to follow, but
not always easy to do. Our teachers here at Pin
Oak know what they are talking about. You should
really consider their advice. Keep in mind, they
                passed the 8th grade!

College Week
                                    at Pin Oak
The 2nd Annual College Week at Pin Oak was the best yet! There were many decorated
doors and college shirts everywhere. Teachers introduced a variety of lessons and
activities about preparing for college. I think that if you can have fun while learning, you
should do it- especially when it comes to college, because of the importance of obtaining
a degree and a decent education. Everyone learned something new about college,
whether it was what college a teacher went to, or the fact that you can study cooking in
college. The event was great for everyone here at Pin Oak. Go College Week!

Everyone loves summer, but is summer really fun when you sit at home the whole summer,
or go to a camp for 3 or 4 weeks? Maybe, but you need to get out and relax somewhere
else! We found some family-friendly options for summer getaways:

San Antonio
Go to San Antonio and you’ll quickly find out why so many visitors keep going back to enjoy
its friendly atmosphere and vibrant culture! And with so many things to see and experience,
there’s no better place to get out and have fun…

South Padre Island
Located at the tropical tip of Texas, some people have called it “the perfect place”.
It's a place where warm, sparkling beaches, relaxing activities, unparalleled lodging facilities,
along with friendly hospitality, come together in one terrific location to ensure the highest
level of enjoyment for your next vacation.

Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is located on the southern tip of Texas, great for relaxing on the beach, or
having fun at the other local attractions. In some parts, Corpus Christi offers a warm feel,
with small-town charm, but in other parts of Corpus, something is always going on. Also, if
you need a good hamburger, you can stop at the original WHATABURGER, which was
opened in Corpus in 1950.

New Orleans
New Orleans welcomes visitors with a genuine hospitality and singular flair. The city truly can
offer something for every type of visitor, appeal to every interest, and fulfill every agenda
with equal enthusiasm. An offbeat harmony defines the city’s unmistakable charm. New
Orleans is at once a city of marvelous excesses and gentle subtleties. It can deliver exciting
nightlife entertainment and the most family-oriented vacation.

Austin
Austin is a city that doesn’t take itself too seriously. After all, you can’t have a motto like
“Keep Austin Weird”, and be normal. Austin is laid-back, full of energy and, yes, a little
weird. It’s also like no place else in Texas with plenty of barbecue. But you’ll also find a
thriving art community. Filmmakers. Sports fanatics. 200 live music venues. And world-
renowned festivals.

Video Game Club
Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto, Super Smash Bros. Brawl… Do
you know these titles? You know you do. They’re the best
things in the world since the cell phone. Video games! Some
people might think that they “corrupt your mind” and stuff like
that. But that doesn’t stop them from getting into our school!!!

Mr. Gomez (7C Texas History Teacher) has introduced
the “Video Game Club” to our school. During the 25-
minute period during club days, they discuss games,
strategies, walkthroughs, cheat codes and more.
Sometimes, after school, the club stays to play some
cool games.

The requirements for this club are simple. First of
all, your parents have to sign a permission slip to
let you into the club. This is required because
some of the games discussed are rated “M” for
mature. These games contain intense violence,
blood and gore and frequent use of strong
language These games should be played in the
privacy of your own home and not on the school’s
computers.

Future Plans
Mr. Gomez’s future plans for this club include:

 •More playtime after school
•Get more people to play/join the club
 •More console availability

In the magazine, we cover a number of different topics that interest our readers. We hope you enjoy this issue Meet the Charger Staff for Spring 2009: Nancy Vu President “I have been part of the Charger Magazine Staff for 3 semesters. As the president of the staff there is a lot of work and stress put on me. I love helping to create a great magazine that is made by students for our students at Pin Oak. It is a real honor to represent the Charger Staff as President with my partner in crime Darryl Dorsey the Vice President. The Charger Staff this semester was an amazing group to work with. They are dedicated to making an amazing magazine for our POMS family.” Darryl Dorsey Vice President “Being a part of the Charger staff has been very fun. I like working with people to get the magazine finished. This is my second semester being on the Charger staff.” Carolina Ayala Editor in Chief “This is my second semester being part of the Charger Magazine staff, it has been an amazing experience.” Courtney Gonzales Treasurer “This is my first semester in the Charger Magazine, and I am honored to be voted as the treasurer. • 7. Making History in Washington D.C. … We are back in Texas and the experience was great! For the students who visited D.C., the experience was amazing, although many of them missed their friends from other states such as New Mexico, Alaska, Nebraska, Arizona, Georgia, and of course, Texas. We stayed in the Marriot Crystal City hotel. We made sure that we visited every monument in the area. The most visited one was the Lincoln Memorial. My favorite museum was the American Smithsonian Museum. It had many legendary artifacts such as Michael Jordan's Jersey, the original Kermit the Frog and the Hip Hop Era with its Boom Box Players. The biggest place was the Newseum, its was mostly about being a reporter for news and what's happening in our country. We enjoyed food and all the festivities. We survived many long walks in the cold. Some of us even got frostbitten every day including myself. But we experienced some bad timing during the inauguration when we had to ride the metro at 6:30am and it was so full no one had more than 5 inches of space. When the teachers told us we were going to a concert featuring Beyonce, Shakira, Usher, Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, and Stevie Wonder, we were amazed. To our surprise, there was more to singing. Speeches were made by celebrities such as George Lopez, Tom Hanks, and Kumar. People were happy and proud of being there for the first African American President of the United States, Barack Obama. History was made and we were a part of that history. I will never forget my experiences in Washington. 6 By Brian Juarez

  • 11. Leadership Leadership is the ability to get people to follow voluntarily to accomplish a task. A leader is someone who gives orders, keeps organized, and guides others to success. Making your own choices is better than following someone else’s because it can always be a mistake that you chose to make. A follower is the kind of person that has the ability to be a leader, but chooses not to. Many people choose, what they think is cool, what their peers do, because they want to seem “cool” too. In reality, it isn’t cool to choose a bad decision, and many people do actually believe that. If your friends encourage you to choose the “cool” decisions, then maybe they aren’t the right friends for you. Leadership isn’t always good. Take the holocaust for example, Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazis (National Socialist Worker’s Party), and became the leader of Germany in 1933. He convinced all ‘Aryans’(Germans) to follow him and join the Nazis. Since he was the ruler of Germany, the Germans decided to listen to him and joined. Hitler believed that Jews were sub-human and were seen as biologically inferior to the superiority of the ‘Aryans’. He decided to segregate all Jews, handicaps, Gypsies (nomadic Romans), and homosexuals from his people. His followers never tried to stop it, and let eleven million people die. Six million of them were Jews, up to 250,000 of them were Gypsies, and 1.5 million were children. Abraham Lincoln is known as the best president in U.S. History. He was a good leader because he made a lot of changes while he was in office, these were all good changes. Since he came into office while the United States was still at war, he never changed what he was fighting for. He fought for the United States without slavery and didn’t stray away from that. But, his Generals weren’t listening to his instruction and didn’t perform so he had to shuffle things around quite a bit. He stayed on course on what he believed in even though it wasn’t an easy task. He never criticized anyone, neither personally nor publicly. He never went to public and criticized the leaders he was replacing. He had a passion to keep the nation together and he did just that. Being a leader not only takes courage but also responsibility. To be a leader, you need to make good choices and think before you make a mistake. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with being a follower, but being a leader is something that you ought to be, and you’ll be valued by others. Are you ready to step up and be a leader? by: Carolina Ayala and Addison Snelling
  • 12. Teacher Talk Do you like taking tests? Do you use any type of special test-taking strategies? Do you turn in your homework on time? On this page, you will find some advice from one of our teachers from 8C. These tips are very important, so maybe using them will give you an advantage over other people who don’t: Ms. Furnari says.. “Use your planner, don’t wait until the last minute to turn in your work, and check your cluster blog regularly. Also when taking tests, don’t forget to highlight, underline, take good notes on the margins and double check your work whenever you finish. When you’re doing your homework, make a real effort, not just an effort to get it done. Make sure you leave nothing blank. Your parents can help you get organized and check your work, but they can’t do it for you.” Mr. Gomez says “Make sure to write the due date of your homework in your planner. Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning before a test, and when you need to present your homework, make sure you present it at the beginning of class, just in case if we need to review the homework assignment. Your parents also need to check the cluster’s website to make sure it matches the student’s planner.” Now it’s up to you choose what you want to do. You either listen to your teachers and succeed, or you don’t and you fail. It’s very easy to follow, but not always easy to do. Our teachers here at Pin Oak know what they are talking about. You should really consider their advice. Keep in mind, they passed the 8th grade! 11

Teachers introduced a variety of lessons and activities about preparing for college. I think that if you can have fun while learning, you should do it- especially when it comes to college, because of the importance of obtaining a degree and a decent education. Everyone learned something new about college, whether it was what college a teacher went to, or the fact that you can study cooking in college. The event was great for everyone here at Pin Oak. Some people might think that they “corrupt your mind” and stuff like that. But that doesn’t stop them from getting into our school!!! Mr. Gomez (7C Texas History Teacher) has introduced the “Video Game Club” to our school. During the 25- minute period during club days, they discuss games, strategies, walkthroughs, cheat codes and more. Sometimes, after school, the club stays to play some cool games. The requirements for this club are simple. First of all, your parents have to sign a permission slip to let you into the club. This is required because some of the games discussed are rated “M” for mature. These games contain intense violence, blood and gore and frequent use of strong language These games should be played in the privacy of your own home and not on the school’s computers. Future Plans Mr. Gomez’s future plans for this club include: •More playtime after school •Get more people to play/join the club •More console availability 33 By Dylan V.
