tions, and the re-alignment and re-
grouting of rotating machinery. We
offer these services to all industries
operating machinery on concrete
foundations, including petroleum
refining, power generation, steel
manufacturing, metal forming and
processing, pharmaceutical and
food processing, chemical pro-
cessing, material handling, min-
ing, cement manufacturing, glass

In most cases, the main symptom
of grout and foundation problems
is high vibration levels of the ma-
chine itself, particularly when the
trend is upward. Other associated
problems will be excessive power
consumption, high wear rates on
consumables like seals and bear-
ings, and unexplained stoppages.
Alphatec Engineering can inspect
a problem machine at short no-
tice, and give a detailed descrip-
tion of the problem areas - these
are rarely confined to one fixed
“cause”, - and then propose and
carry out a repair which addresses
all the issues raised. By using ep-
oxy grouts, with its very rapid cure
times, the total machine downtime
can be minimized.

These diesel engine generators in an offshore island power station had been idle for
many months because of extremely high vibrations, and terrible mis-alignment of
the crankshafts. An Alphatec team was able to restore the integrity of the founda-
tion, re-align the engines, and regrout them within a period of about 3 weeks each.
The engines were returned to service and rapidly recouped the cost of the repair
work.
This diesel engine driven fire pump had been vibrating badly since its installation.
The skid was regrouted, the engine supports stiffened, the pump supports regrouted,
and the piping supports regrouted in a series of short projects carried out over a
period of 2 years.

We offer both products and services to
the industries we serve, but primarily,
we offer solutions to problems. Our
products are epoxy resin based grouts
and adhesives, which we use to repair
cracked or damaged foundations. We
then use epoxy grouts, with inert fill-
ers for stiffness and heat resistance, to
regrout the machines themselves.
Our repair projects are based on sur-
veys conducted of the machines in
question, to assess the vibration lev-
els, the position of the machine, i.e.
its alignment, the existing grout and
anchoring mechanism, and the opera-
tional history. We make a proposal
based in this survey, and offer a lump-
sum price to correct the problems en-
countered.
A turbo-compressor is being installed here for a major
Natural Gas Liquefaction plant in SE Asia.
This compressor skid was installed in a waste-water treatment plant directly onto
the concrete slab, and consequently suffered such high vibration levels that it
could not be safely operated. The skid was regrouted in situ by Alphatec.
The soleplates supporting this gas turbine powered generator set in a major oil
refinery were found to be loose within the concrete, because of oil penetration.
The skids were moving lateraly during each startup and shutdown cycle, with
alarming consequences for the shaft alignment. The soleplates were chipped out,
reset in place using the ALPHAPAD system, and regrouted with ALPHATEC 800
epoxy grout.

3. Where appropriate, we work together
with mechanical contractors, and vi-
bration and alignment specialists, to
ensure that we have a full picture of
the situation prior to starting any work,
and a complete solution to the prob-
lem including replacement of parts,
overhaul of the equipment, adjust-
ment of the alignment, etc. Finally we
will measure the results of the work
done, and submit a full report for the
customer’s records.
In addition to the innovative AL-
PHATEC® branded resin-based prod-
ucts that we use to solve foundation
problems, we have a range of me-
chanical aids, including the specially
designed hydraulic jack system mar-
keted under the ALPHAPAD® trade-
mark.
The Alphatec method of repairing ro-
tatingmachineryfoundationisextraor-
dinarily effective at reducing vibration
levels of many different kinds of ma-
chine. Reciprocating machinery will
typically show reductions in vibration
level of 50 to 70%. Turbo-machinery
benefits from the Alphatec treatment
as well, with many machines show-
ing vibration reductions of between
20 and 50% after pressure injection
repairs of the foundation.
A series of booster compressors was installed at a gas field in Indonesia using
ALPHATEC 800 epoxy grout, and supervision from the regional Alphatec Engi-
neering office.
These reciprocating compressors in a major oil refinery had been installed using
a competitor’s epoxy grout, but without sufficient attnetion to the many details
that make up a good grouting job. Alphatec was called in to regrout the ma-
chines before their 18 month guarantee period.
