Editor's Notes
Developed a monthly national call in partnership with Practice Greenhealth to highlight an area of sustainability, to give CHI hospitals useful tools in developing programs in these areas and offer help as needed to maintain these programs once implemented.
Developed divisional green teams with bimonthly calls in an effort to create awareness of the program, educate on sustainability principles and to share ideas that other hospitals have implemented successfully in their area.
CHI received 15 awards for excellence in sustainability from Practice Green Health. These awards were for Partner recognition, Making Medicine Mercury free, Partner for change and Partner for change with distinction. These awards are given to hospitals in recognition of their commitment on setting goals, tracking data, benchmarking, and sharing successes
CHI has been working on energy reduction and the related reduction in carbon emissions for more than 5 years. CHI joined the Healthier hospitals initiative in the leaner energy challenge in 2013
In 2012, CHI became one of the sponsoring systems for the Healthier Hospitals Initiative – a national effort to encourage hospitals around the country to become environmental stewards, setting the example for other industries. As a sponsoring system, CHI leadership made a direct investment in this multi-year project with the intention of engaging all CHI entities in the effort. As part of our commitment, CHI has chosen two initiatives as its focus – engaged leadership and leaner energy. With full support from top leadership at CHI, nearly every CHI hospital was enrolled in the program and is participating in environmental efforts around leaner energy, safe reprocessing, waste reduction, safer chemicals and healthy food.
Through effort of the facilities team leaner energy has been one of CHI goals for the last 5 years.
Through effort of the facilities team leaner energy has been one of CHI goals for the last 5 years. In 2013 Chi has reached a savings goal of $478,287 for a carbon reduction of 3,562 metric tons which is the equivalent of planting 24,380 mature trees.
In 2013 water was not a priority for CHI but in 2014 will be exploring numerous way to REDUCE their water consumption in its facilities.
CHI has had a very successful reprocessing program for over the last 3 years.
In 2013 CHI reprocessed 1,142,346 devises which diverted 945,376 tons of waste for a waste savings of $212,716.
By this effort CHI saved the equivalent of 106 tons of carbon from escaping into the atmosphere. This equates into the use of 141.9 Hybrid cars or approximately the saving of 10,989 gallons of gasoline. Through this initiative CHI realized a savings of $10,183,023.26 and a growth of the program of 28%.

In 2013 the Value Analysis group embarked on a program to streamline and standardize individual hospital custom packs into 8 national packs. For a potential savings of more than $383K. They are also working on 4 more packs with plans to look at all the custom packs in the system in 2014. This standardization will equate to big savings for CHI in the future.
CHI is committed to using safer chemicals and products. The value analysis group is designing a new product introduction process which will require the vendor to disclose the presence of any potentially harmful chemicals or substances within the products being considered for purchase within CHI.
In 2013 CHI recycled 20,021 tons of material. This weight is the approximate the weight of 17,339 hippos. Taking this material out of our landfills not only improves our planet but produces large savings for CHI hospitals. This amount of recycling constitutes about 18% of our total waste.
As an example CHI’s usage of reusable sharps containers resulted in the elimination of 278 tons of plastic and 13 tons of cardboard from the landfill. This also eliminated 163 ton of CO2 from escaping into the environment which is the equivalent of saving 16,732 gallons of gasoline or 6,146 tanks of propane to fire our barbeques.

In 2013 CHI has developed a committee to look at using more local, sustainable, healthy food in the cafeterias. This program will be developed in 2014.
Through the hiring of our new Director of Construction, Architect, and our new Director of Real-Estate CHI plans to develop sustainability programs in new andremodeling construction, in planning of new hospital units, and in the purchase of new equipment and supplies for these areas.
