The Hawley Report 1994
The board should satisfy itself that it’s own
business is conducted so that:
• The information it uses is sufficient and
necessary for its purpose
• It is properly advised on all information
aspects of subjects on its agenda
• Its own use of information complies with
laws, regulations and recognised ethical
standards
The board should determine the organisation’s
policy for information assets….
• Identify assets
• Classify by importance & value
• Manage quality and quantity
• Use assets ethically, in compliance with regulations
• Define roles to manage these assets
• Educate staff to safeguard & enhance assets
• Protect assets from theft, loss, abuse & misuse
• Harness assets for the maximum benefit
• Align information strategy with business strategy

  • 2. Our Strategic priorities • Understand the needs of current and potential members • Professional accreditation for the KM workforce • Republish “Information as an Asset” (The Hawley Report, 1994)

Objectives To support the professionalization and professional recognition of the international KM community by: • Engaging proactively with leading KM practitioners • Articulate the skills, competencies and values shared by KM practitioners • Implement formal professional recognition (“Chartered Knowledge Manager”) • Implement formal accreditation of KM teaching and learning provision • Promote recognition of professionally-registered status by employers and clients

The board should satisfy itself that it’s own business is conducted so that: • The information it uses is sufficient and necessary for its purpose • It is properly advised on all information aspects of subjects on its agenda • Its own use of information complies with laws, regulations and recognised ethical standards
  • 19. The board should determine the organisation’s policy for information assets…. • Identify assets • Classify by importance & value • Manage quality and quantity • Use assets ethically, in compliance with regulations • Define roles to manage these assets • Educate staff to safeguard & enhance assets • Protect assets from theft, loss, abuse & misuse • Harness assets for the maximum benefit • Align information strategy with business strategy

Information as an Asset: the new board agenda • Increasing capacity & capability of systems to derive value from information assets • Rapid growth in the volume and range of those assets • Interconnection; accelerating capability to share assets • The need to protect assets in a more connected, open world • The socio-political context heightening recognition of the value of personal data
