Essay on My Development as a Writer
When writing a five paragraph essay, there are five steps one must fallow in order to attain perfection, these steps include understanding the question,
brainstorming, writing a rough copy, revising, and creating a final draft. The first and most important step is understanding the topic. The topic of the
essay is what the essay will be about and if this is misunderstood, the whole essay will be off course. The second step, brainstorming, will help
organize thoughts and ideas so they flow amiably. There are many different ways to brainstorm, some of the most helpful are making a web of ideas,
making a list of ideas, or creating a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the conviction. All these ideas will be related to the topic at hand. For

The next step is revising and editing the rough draft. Revision helps the writer attain different opinions and assessments about how the essay sounds,
and flows, getting grammar and spelling suggestions along the way. It is better to have many opinions rather than one because one person might not
catch a misspelled word that another would have. The more opinions a paper gets, the better it may be. The final step when writing a five paragraph
essay is creating a final draft. This is the finished product and should include every aspect that an essay needs to get a point across. Such aspects
like a proper introduction, a clear thesis, three supporting paragraphs and a conclusion that restates the thesis. Over the past few months, I have
written many essays which required me to research topics and build essays based on my opinions and thoughts, my favorite being "Generation
Change" and worst being "children." The essay "Generation Change" is my best work because of how I made the paper flow by using transitions and
complex word choice. The topic was about what I would name my generation and why. I thought it was easier to write about this topic because I could
use insight that I learned over the years to give examples such as the introduction of global warming, the advancement of technology, the first African
American president and the change in culture. My worst essay in my opinion would be an essay comparing and contrasting having children. I couldn't

My Dream To Be A Writer Essay
When I was a kid, I thought I would be a professional writer. As a youth, I would constantly read, write short stories, and attempt to write plays. I
would often dream of being a great novelist who had the power to control how a story would end. Being a novelist was a dream for me, and one
that I think I could have achieved if it hadn't been for my freshmen year of High School. Due to an unforeseen instructor change, lack of support,
and a negative influence, my dream was crushed and I would never be the same. Freshmen year started off great, and my dream of being a writer
was still as strong as it was when I was a child. I had an English teacher named Mr. Wilson who was extremely supportive and the entire class loved
him. He was an easy going man with messy white hair and a little overweight. He would often times wear sweater vest, which were a little too
small, and swear during class. Although we would give him a hard time on the way he looked, he would always remind us that it isn't the way
someone looks that makes them smart. Mr. Wilson's easy going attitude made me feel like I could be a successful writer. He was always there to
help when we needed it, and never made us feel ashamed to ask questions. Everything was running on all cylinders heading into Christmas break, and
I figured the hard part was over. After winter break that year, we came back to learn that Mr. Wilson suffered several heart attacks while in Japan with
his nephew. This news was

Why I Want To Be A Writer
I want to be a writer when I grow up. Being a writer is hard. The success of your job is dependent not only on whether you have done it well but also
on whether other people think you have done well. I would like to be a writer. I don't know if I can do it. It's like any other job; you never know
until you try. But few other jobs are as dependent on the opinions of others and on something that has no basis in fact or logic. One word out of
place can tear a whole work apart, and yet a few black and white words arranged just so can unleash a world of color and feeling. A spark of inspiration
can create a new world from nothing, metaphorically speaking. It is the gift of God. He gives some people a story to tell and the ability to tell it. Like
any gift from God, it is something to be used to His glory and not taken lightly. To use any gift takes work....show more content...
In college you can major in Creative Writing but many authors recommend that you do not. Instead, they advise that you study Literature instead, the
great works of authors past and present. If you don't know what is good, how can you write something good yourself? Or you can do this outside of
college and simply read the great works of literature on your own, studying what makes these writers great, what writing tricks and techniques make
up their style. The purpose is not to copy them; the purpose is to be inspired. To be awriter you must write. This is the most important piece of advice.
Write anything, even if it's as flat as the floor. The more you use words, the more they become willing to be used by you. The more you write, the
more you have something to write. Writing is both a skill and a gift. It is both acquired and

What Makes A Good Writer?
The most important thing that a piece "good" writing does is make people question where they stand on certain topics. This is the most important
thing because when you question things you learn more, and when learn more you will be able to teach more. When you read something you do not
want to just read it and not learn anything from it, then there would have been no purpose in reading it. Writers do not just write papers so they can
tell the reader what is right or wrong. They write to explain their theory, to make others understand where they are coming from and the logic behind
them.
A writer can accomplish composing a "good" piece of writing by making sure he has logical reasoning behind their statements, by making it
noticeable when they transition into explaining another point, and when by not letting their personal feelings be put ahead of their logical reasons,
and by making the reader question them. These are not only important for the author but it is also important for the reader. If a author does not have
a logical reasoning behind his statements than the reader can not take it as a credible source and they will most likely not believe it. Transitions are a
huge part of good writing also because if a reader can not tell when your last point ends and the next one starts...show more content...

necessity in life and people learn the most by reading. Reading is an everyday activity and if an author writes something people expect to learn from
it. It also makes the author learn. While writing the author is putting his skills to use. By doing that they are keeping their brain function high and they
are getting relieving themselves from any medical issues that come with age and affect the brain. This being true that is an effect from writing you can

My Experience As A Writer Essay
Vinay Patel ENG–1031.1032–05 Professor Ward Date–12/08/17 About my experience as a writer How to become a good writer. There is some major
difference between highschool and college essay. High school and college are different things for writing an essay because it's exploring your
more skills on writing. In high school, I never had experience as writing essay or speeches. Because in high school, it is not require that every
student have to write an essay on academic ways. If a student doesn't want to write essay academic way, then for a student can write an essay on
his ways. Because in my high school, it does not require that everyone have to follow the MLA/APA format. We just had to finish the essay,
because it's required to graduate from high school. But when I started my first semester in college, and the professor gave us first assignment
writing about the introduction of an essay. I was really get stressed on that time, because I really don't understand what to write introduction in essay.
But I try my best on my first assignment. Writing my three essays has taught me how to write the essay in academic way, how to format them
correctly, and analyse the text and question before writing the essay. when I started with my first essay, I get the idea and I use to enjoy myself to
writing essay. When I get the first essay that I have to work on, is summary/response essay. For summary/response essay, first I have to do read the

My Growth As A Writer
The Memo will directly address my growth as a writer throughout my time in EH 101–13. It will also highlight my current strengths and weaknesses in
my own personal writing style.
My DevelopmentRhetorical Analysis: This being the first paper I wrote for you, it turned out to be utter garbage. This was my worst essay because I
was overconfident in my own writing ability and didn't think I had much room to improve on. At the time I felt like it was a top notch essay, but I
have recently gone back and reread it only to notice it as choppy and stale to read. Then the paper was riddled with comma splices, even after you
did a lesson going over how to fix them. It wasn't out of spite that I kept repeating these mistakes, but instead it was just ignorance on the matter. It
was my goal coming out of that essay to fix those errors and while not perfect, I feel I have improved in my awareness of the problem. This paper
taught me a great deal on how to think more critically about situations. This new mindset directly came into play in the second essay. I learned my
greatest lesson from this paper. I have so much room for improvement. Now that I can see more of my errors I can continue to improve and move
forwards with my writing abilities.
Literary Analysis: The Literary Analysis was by far my best essay and the one I most enjoyed writing. The new critical thinking skills I learned in the
first essay made writing this paper much easier. I also found the topics of the

Who Are You As A Writer? Essay
When presented with the question, "who are you as a writer?", I was speechless at first. But after thinking about it, I realized who I am as a writer
has been influenced by so many different sponsors throughout my life and there was not a short, concrete answer. Brandt mentions that "literacy
is sponsored by people, institutions, and circumstances that both make it possible for a person to become literate and shape the way the person
actually acquires literacy." (Brandt 43) My attitude towards writing has been influenced by teachers, both negatively and positively, by my
mother, and by academic assignments over the years. My answer to the question can only be answered by a narrative of my writing life. I have
convinced myself that I am a terrible writer, and when presented with a writing assignment, I get anxious instantly. I see writing as a burden and a
huge obstacle that gets placed in my life. Academic writing is not fun, but something I value due to the fact that we are a grade driven society.
When writing, I write to the guidelines in order to receive points for the requested criteria. The reason being, I gave up on expressing my own ideas
because I had been shut down by so many teachers throughout my education. I tried to write down what came to my mind and put my own twist on
things, but that was not the "right" way to write papers. In order to make both my teachers and my grades happy, I wrote what they wanted to hear, and
even then I was not to the level they

My Development as a Writer Essays
My English Literature major has helped me to achieve an outstanding level of appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of both American and British
Literature. As a high school AP English student, I struggled through great works like Hamlet and To the Lighthouse. My teacher's daily lectures (there
was no such thing as class discussion) taught me merely to interpret the works as critics had in the past. I did not enjoy the reading or writing process.
As a freshman at Loras, I was enrolled in the Critical Writing: Poetry class. For the first time since grade school, my writing ability was praised and
the sharing of my ideas was encouraged by an enthusiastic and nurturing professor. Despite the difficulty of poetry, I enjoyed reading it....show more

The first essay, "The Roles of Women in British Drama," represents my first exposure to a new genre of literature. The essay was also one of my
first formal and interpretative essays at the college level. As a woman and a student of literature, I feel a special connection to this essay's topic of
women's roles in literature. In addition, this essay shows my "knowledge of the social, political, philosophical, and religious forces that influence
authors and the people they write about" (Oral/Portfolio). After reading some of the most prominent British plays of the twentieth century, I observed
a discontinuity in the roles of women in this genre. Sadly, women's roles in literature were very similar to their role in society. During the twentieth
century, women were still trying and failing to emerge out of the roles they had been cast in by a male dominated society. Even though women were
almost always portrayed as inferior to men, I found a strong exception to this stereotype through the role of Thomasina. I admire Thomasina's
intelligence and wit, but I truly admire Tom Stoppard for creating this character. As a senior revising and expanding this essay, I realized how much I
have grown as a writer and a student of literature. When I began revising, I realized that the focus of the paper needed to be narrowed and focused
more on the play Arcadia, in which Thomasina is the exception to the types of women characters stereotypically

" There are your radish seeds everyone." Said Mr. Susick. The whole class looked around at each other with a blank confused face. It was the first
day of junior year in my English class. Mr. Susick started talking about how our first assignment would be to grow radishes. We were all thinking,
how in the world does gardening relate to English class. I had heard about this project from previous juniors but none of them said what the real reason
was. All Mr. Susick said was that you need to let the project teach itself and get into nature. He left us with one bit of information along with the
requirements to start. The main goal of the assignment was to extract your own universal truths. For the first time in English class,...show more content...
I had to watch tutorials and read a book about gardening to formalize myself. Reading a book about gardening was an interesting switch of genres
compared to what is usually read for assignments. Also, I though the main part of the project was to grow radishes, there was still a lot of English
mixed in. With every step in gardening, we had to journal and describe the experience. Journaling every single day about a seed you could not even
see yet was difficult. Making the habit of writing at least a paragraph everyday did help me improve in my writing. In my previous English classes, I
would only have to write for big papers or essay responses on tests. As for this the change seemed more beneficial cause I was using my skills every
through the two months of the project. By having to write about something different my vocabulary did expand. Though the project was an
assignment everyday it helped me stay interested in it. Having to water my radishes and write about them was kind of fun. Also, along the journey of
growing them you had to take pictures of your progress. So, I could go back and watch the transformation before my eyes. With the gardening aspect
of the assignment, it brought it to live and actually represented something. Overall, all of my hard work and staying on top of my assignment finally paid

Growing as a Writer
From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout
the school year. I started out the year writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a more
clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer.
After analyzing many of my written works, I highlighted my writing weaknesses along with notable strengths. Evident in my earlier works, my
vocabulary was more basic and was not as powerful unlike my more recent essays. Seeking to improve, I started utilizing words I learned during the

choice in addition to incorporating a diversity of sentence structure. Nearing the end of the school year, I acknowledge that I have grown and

will be challenging, I feel confident that I will do well because I feel well prepared from all I've done this year. As I grow older, I will have to continue
to write. I know I can take the knowledge I've learned this year and apply it to future papers for years to

What It Means To Be A Writer Essay
When I think of what it means to be a writer, I do not envision myself– at least not anymore. I don't think I ever will again. In order to refer to myself as
a writer, I believe I would have to wholeheartedly enjoy the content of which I write about, but unfortunately a combination of predetermined
school prompts, a lack of time, and a dwindling creative flow prevents me from doing so. It wasn't always this way, however. I wasn't aware of it at
the time, but during my formative years of life my imagination (as most four to five year olds' are) was at its height. I look back on those years and
picture swirling images, a vibrant display of watercolors blending seamlessly into each other, light and darkness all at once, creatures unimaginable to
everyone except my own mind, and the warm feeling of believing there are never–ending possibilities. These visions, no matter how sensational, are
how I remember my imagination during my youth. To me, the world was endless. I had nothing to fear. So satisfactory it was to believe...show more

I was entered into the "I Am An Author" program and wrote my own picture book about a mermaid. As one would expect, the plot was cringeworthy
and the conclusion didn't make any sense, but I guess that's what you get when you give a kindergartener a pencil and paper. I worked hard at
storytelling throughout the rest of elementary school, continuing to enter contests and even winning a few. My imagination was unrestrictable to the
point where I was thinking of short story ideas so quickly that I barely had time to write an idea down before I thought of a new one. Stories of slugs,
poems about waterfalls, narratives of Betsy Ross (I was obsessed with her...), and adaptations of Jack and the Beanstalk littered my notebooks
throughout the years. My mind was vibrant, youthful, and alive. Unfortunately, all of this would be coming to an end near the end of fifth

Essay On Becoming A Writer
I remember distinctly the first time I was exposed to how writing, and specifically my own words on paper, could compel another person to feel
emotion. How they understood what I was feeling and thinking, simply by the words I wrote. I was in eighth grade and my English teacher was
giving me praise for a paper I had written on my parents' divorce. For the first time, writing wasn't about getting an "A" or following a five paragraph
system; we had been given minimal guidelines for the paper and I'd thrived. As my teacher, Ms. Palmer, had put it I understood how to "present a
factual story while keeping the reader's' interest." She suggested that I submit it to a special essay contest and I was thrilled. I gained so much that day,

Whether it was my frustrations about the never–ending conflicts in society or my personal dilemmas on being a modern day teenager, I can guarantee
I wrote about it. Even at my young age, I started to rack my brain trying to ascertain how I could be sure to use writing in my career. Should I be a
novelist, a poet, maybe even a screenwriter? All of these different ideas came and went during my phase of pondering. Once I hit high school
though, it all became clear to me; how I could help others through my writing. It came to me because of what Ms. Palmer had said; I could make
the pain and tribulations of everyday life less difficult, even if just for the small amount of time while someone was reading what I presented to the
world. I determined I would be a journalist. I aspire for my writing to make an impact on society, and aid people through the adventure of life.

Assignment : I, As A Writer Essay
November 3rd, 2015 – ENTRY 1: Me, as a writer?
Attitude: I'm energized to complete this course and learn more about writing, but I feel like some of the information for this course makes it a
little difficult for me because I don't understand some of the information I'm receiving but I hope to overcome this and try to move through it and
do the best I can. Doing the best you can is all you can do right? I hope to execute well in this class and pass with a good grade and I also enjoy this
class because I like to write, because I get to write out my thoughts. It's a great deal easier than speaking your thoughts. When you write I feel like you
get more in depth with your sentiments and feelings, but the one thing I don't like about writing is someone reading it and I care about what they'll
recollect.
Inventory: I'm an autonomous learner, that's why I chose to acquire an online course at Penn Foster. Studying this course is perfect for me because
it's at your own stride. I also want to become a more skillful writer. I desire to write things out more clearly and I want to use better wording and use
more transition words and I feel like I will be able to understand all the things I need to know and attempt to ameliorate my writing at Penn Foster. I'm
very excited to complete this course and be able to show someone else all of the information I learned in this class.

A Writer's Reflection Essay
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing
because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a
considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To
put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the
course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
With the professors' assistance, I was able to identify the meager...show more content...
An aspect that I often struggle with is proper punctuation. Truthfully, I do not know how to correctly use punctuation. When writing, I place
punctuation by mimicking authors' formats or by placing them where it feels right. This is present in all of my writing, but I am attempting to improve.
Punctuation also plays a part in another weakness of mine, one that is most likely present within this essay. Since middle school, it was engrained in
my mind that a good essay is a long essay, so I have a tendency for wordiness. To elongate an essay, I tend to add needless words and sentences. For
example, in the rough draft of the Whole Process Essay, I added several unrelated occurrences to elongate the paragraphs. Although my essays were
long and wordy, the professor commented on vagueness and unclearness within the whole process and practice essay. Sometimes, I disregard the fact
that the reader might not know what it is I am writing about or the sentence makes perfect sense to me. The latter is the most common, I quickly read
the sentence and it appears fine to me. Within the Whole Process Essay, another weakness was brought to my attention. I lack structure, a key element
in effective writing. Within the same essay and a few others, I simply added what felt right, sometimes the result would be acceptable but in other
instances, it was a long, jumbled mess. Once these weaknesses were revealed, I worked on improving my current works. There were several elements

I would not consider myself a writer by any means and I believe that a writer is everything I am not. A writer is someone who does not merely just
write for entertainment or for recreation, a writer is someone who has perfected their area in writing and strives for perfection in all of their pieces. A
writer tends to enjoy the writing process and continues to do what they are best at. A writer is someone who enjoys writing and is always content
with writing, some writers may even use their writing as a profession. There are many ways to define a writer, and the best definition will come from

Me as a Writer
As a writer, I think that I am not as good as I thought I was back in high school. I see myself as a student who tries their best, but makes "B" average
work. I have never really taken the time to relate to my papers. I always just wrote what the teacher wanted and handed it in. In my mind, I never
really liked trying to explain in full detail what something meant. Back in high school, my teachers always wanted me to explain my writing in such
depth that a kindergartener would understand why Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. Trying to explain my writing was always very tiring. I often would
get bored trying to explain and just stop writing and do something else for a while. Most of the time in high school I didn't like writing. Mainly...show

One way to calm my inner critic is a quote from Allegra Goodman's article called Calming the Inner Critic and Getting to Work on page 309. "Love
your material. Nothing frightens the inner critic more than the writer who loves her work. The writer who is enamored of her material forgets all
about censoring herself. She doesn't stop to wonder if her book is any good, or who will publish it, or what people will think. She writes in a
trance, losing track of time, hearing only her characters in her head." What this means to me is that if I truly let my mind go and only focus on
the material, I will be able to write the paper without having my inner critic confuse me. In an article called The Composing Processes of Unskilled
College Writers by Sondra Pearl on page 201, there is a strategy that I used to help with writing a paper. "Given any topic, the first operation he
performed was to focus in and narrow down the topic. He did this by rephrasing the topic until either a word or an idea in the topic linked up with
something in his own experience (an attitude, an opinion, an event). In this way he established a connection between the field of discourse and himself
and at this point he felt ready to write." The strategy that he uses to organize his thoughts is the same way I start my papers. I start with just words that
relate to the topic and figure out how to put them in my writing so they make sense to the

Becoming a Writer There is a multitude of jobs and careers I want to have, as some of you may know, but I think we're only allowed to talk about
one. However, there is one job in particular that I know that I'll do, whether I'm paid for it or not. That job is writing. Not only do you need language
skills, but I believe that you will need creativity and an immense amount of patience in order to be a successful writer of any sort. In contemplation of
becoming a writer, there are certain duties, special skills and talents, as well as certain education to take into consideration. Some of the things you
may be expected to do are: plan out ideas, edit to satisfy needs of self and others, and actually write. Depending on what is being written, you

The Role of a Writer Essay
Before one can truly appreciate a writer's role, they should take a quick walk down memory lane. Writers have been around as long ago as 25,000 to
30,000 b.c, painting pictures on cave walls was one way how they would expressed what others could not say. Later in 2900 b.c the Egyptians
developed hieroglyphic writing. The first alphabet script appeared in Palestine at about 160 b.c, this script influenced many scripts to be created.
Historic writers started with stone and clay tablets to express their thoughts. Next, were the papyrus rolls and parchment paper made from dried needs
of China. Later, in 105 b.c, a man by the name of Tsai Lun of China invented what we have all used since creation; paper. And with the creation of the

Writers are necessary in our every day lives and are so easily overlooked. Which is why my attention was captured to this quote, "The role of a
writer is not to say what we can all say, but what we are unable to say." is the quote I could most relate to. Although I have no problem expressing
myself, there may be a better approach with wiser words. That is what I enjoy most about reading. There is so much to learn with different authors
writing. The saying, "Read between the lines" is an expression I was brought up hearing, not always understanding what it meant at the time, but it
came to mind when I chose this quote. The role of a writer is challenging at times, it is very difficult to have a conversation with an individual
without losing their interest, much less writing a novel. That is not because the conversation is boring or the author did not write a great novel. It is
because the average attention span is eight seconds of interest on a focused attention point. If a person enjoys what they are doing and are motivated
to do it, they will have an longer attention span. That is why a writer's style, theme, and tone of a book are so important. Not every book is for every
ones liking. I, myself, prefer non–fiction stories because I put myself in the characters shoes. These writings are filled with real events of people. For
example, some are very sad and lonely, while others are dramatic and adventurous. But before I started to

Essay On My Development As A Writer

  • 1. Essay on My Development as a Writer When writing a five paragraph essay, there are five steps one must fallow in order to attain perfection, these steps include understanding the question, brainstorming, writing a rough copy, revising, and creating a final draft. The first and most important step is understanding the topic. The topic of the essay is what the essay will be about and if this is misunderstood, the whole essay will be off course. The second step, brainstorming, will help organize thoughts and ideas so they flow amiably. There are many different ways to brainstorm, some of the most helpful are making a web of ideas, making a list of ideas, or creating a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the conviction. All these ideas will be related to the topic at hand. For ...show more content... The next step is revising and editing the rough draft. Revision helps the writer attain different opinions and assessments about how the essay sounds, and flows, getting grammar and spelling suggestions along the way. It is better to have many opinions rather than one because one person might not catch a misspelled word that another would have. The more opinions a paper gets, the better it may be. The final step when writing a five paragraph essay is creating a final draft. This is the finished product and should include every aspect that an essay needs to get a point across. Such aspects like a proper introduction, a clear thesis, three supporting paragraphs and a conclusion that restates the thesis. Over the past few months, I have written many essays which required me to research topics and build essays based on my opinions and thoughts, my favorite being "Generation Change" and worst being "children." The essay "Generation Change" is my best work because of how I made the paper flow by using transitions and complex word choice. The topic was about what I would name my generation and why. I thought it was easier to write about this topic because I could use insight that I learned over the years to give examples such as the introduction of global warming, the advancement of technology, the first African American president and the change in culture. My worst essay in my opinion would be an essay comparing and contrasting having children. I couldn't relate to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My Dream To Be A Writer Essay When I was a kid, I thought I would be a professional writer. As a youth, I would constantly read, write short stories, and attempt to write plays. I would often dream of being a great novelist who had the power to control how a story would end. Being a novelist was a dream for me, and one that I think I could have achieved if it hadn't been for my freshmen year of High School. Due to an unforeseen instructor change, lack of support, and a negative influence, my dream was crushed and I would never be the same. Freshmen year started off great, and my dream of being a writer was still as strong as it was when I was a child. I had an English teacher named Mr. Wilson who was extremely supportive and the entire class loved him. He was an easy going man with messy white hair and a little overweight. He would often times wear sweater vest, which were a little too small, and swear during class. Although we would give him a hard time on the way he looked, he would always remind us that it isn't the way someone looks that makes them smart. Mr. Wilson's easy going attitude made me feel like I could be a successful writer. He was always there to help when we needed it, and never made us feel ashamed to ask questions. Everything was running on all cylinders heading into Christmas break, and I figured the hard part was over. After winter break that year, we came back to learn that Mr. Wilson suffered several heart attacks while in Japan with his nephew. This news was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Why I Want To Be A Writer I want to be a writer when I grow up. Being a writer is hard. The success of your job is dependent not only on whether you have done it well but also on whether other people think you have done well. I would like to be a writer. I don't know if I can do it. It's like any other job; you never know until you try. But few other jobs are as dependent on the opinions of others and on something that has no basis in fact or logic. One word out of place can tear a whole work apart, and yet a few black and white words arranged just so can unleash a world of color and feeling. A spark of inspiration can create a new world from nothing, metaphorically speaking. It is the gift of God. He gives some people a story to tell and the ability to tell it. Like any gift from God, it is something to be used to His glory and not taken lightly. To use any gift takes work....show more content... In college you can major in Creative Writing but many authors recommend that you do not. Instead, they advise that you study Literature instead, the great works of authors past and present. If you don't know what is good, how can you write something good yourself? Or you can do this outside of college and simply read the great works of literature on your own, studying what makes these writers great, what writing tricks and techniques make up their style. The purpose is not to copy them; the purpose is to be inspired. To be awriter you must write. This is the most important piece of advice. Write anything, even if it's as flat as the floor. The more you use words, the more they become willing to be used by you. The more you write, the more you have something to write. Writing is both a skill and a gift. It is both acquired and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. What Makes A Good Writer? The most important thing that a piece "good" writing does is make people question where they stand on certain topics. This is the most important thing because when you question things you learn more, and when learn more you will be able to teach more. When you read something you do not want to just read it and not learn anything from it, then there would have been no purpose in reading it. Writers do not just write papers so they can tell the reader what is right or wrong. They write to explain their theory, to make others understand where they are coming from and the logic behind them. A writer can accomplish composing a "good" piece of writing by making sure he has logical reasoning behind their statements, by making it noticeable when they transition into explaining another point, and when by not letting their personal feelings be put ahead of their logical reasons, and by making the reader question them. These are not only important for the author but it is also important for the reader. If a author does not have a logical reasoning behind his statements than the reader can not take it as a credible source and they will most likely not believe it. Transitions are a huge part of good writing also because if a reader can not tell when your last point ends and the next one starts...show more content... Many people read for fun but they are also learning while doing it. They are learning new words and expanding their vocabulary. Learning is a necessity in life and people learn the most by reading. Reading is an everyday activity and if an author writes something people expect to learn from it. It also makes the author learn. While writing the author is putting his skills to use. By doing that they are keeping their brain function high and they are getting relieving themselves from any medical issues that come with age and affect the brain. This being true that is an effect from writing you can learn from reading it and from writing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My Experience As A Writer Essay Vinay Patel ENG–1031.1032–05 Professor Ward Date–12/08/17 About my experience as a writer How to become a good writer. There is some major difference between highschool and college essay. High school and college are different things for writing an essay because it's exploring your more skills on writing. In high school, I never had experience as writing essay or speeches. Because in high school, it is not require that every student have to write an essay on academic ways. If a student doesn't want to write essay academic way, then for a student can write an essay on his ways. Because in my high school, it does not require that everyone have to follow the MLA/APA format. We just had to finish the essay, because it's required to graduate from high school. But when I started my first semester in college, and the professor gave us first assignment writing about the introduction of an essay. I was really get stressed on that time, because I really don't understand what to write introduction in essay. But I try my best on my first assignment. Writing my three essays has taught me how to write the essay in academic way, how to format them correctly, and analyse the text and question before writing the essay. when I started with my first essay, I get the idea and I use to enjoy myself to writing essay. When I get the first essay that I have to work on, is summary/response essay. For summary/response essay, first I have to do read the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. My Growth As A Writer The Memo will directly address my growth as a writer throughout my time in EH 101–13. It will also highlight my current strengths and weaknesses in my own personal writing style. My DevelopmentRhetorical Analysis: This being the first paper I wrote for you, it turned out to be utter garbage. This was my worst essay because I was overconfident in my own writing ability and didn't think I had much room to improve on. At the time I felt like it was a top notch essay, but I have recently gone back and reread it only to notice it as choppy and stale to read. Then the paper was riddled with comma splices, even after you did a lesson going over how to fix them. It wasn't out of spite that I kept repeating these mistakes, but instead it was just ignorance on the matter. It was my goal coming out of that essay to fix those errors and while not perfect, I feel I have improved in my awareness of the problem. This paper taught me a great deal on how to think more critically about situations. This new mindset directly came into play in the second essay. I learned my greatest lesson from this paper. I have so much room for improvement. Now that I can see more of my errors I can continue to improve and move forwards with my writing abilities. Literary Analysis: The Literary Analysis was by far my best essay and the one I most enjoyed writing. The new critical thinking skills I learned in the first essay made writing this paper much easier. I also found the topics of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Who Are You As A Writer? Essay When presented with the question, "who are you as a writer?", I was speechless at first. But after thinking about it, I realized who I am as a writer has been influenced by so many different sponsors throughout my life and there was not a short, concrete answer. Brandt mentions that "literacy is sponsored by people, institutions, and circumstances that both make it possible for a person to become literate and shape the way the person actually acquires literacy." (Brandt 43) My attitude towards writing has been influenced by teachers, both negatively and positively, by my mother, and by academic assignments over the years. My answer to the question can only be answered by a narrative of my writing life. I have convinced myself that I am a terrible writer, and when presented with a writing assignment, I get anxious instantly. I see writing as a burden and a huge obstacle that gets placed in my life. Academic writing is not fun, but something I value due to the fact that we are a grade driven society. When writing, I write to the guidelines in order to receive points for the requested criteria. The reason being, I gave up on expressing my own ideas because I had been shut down by so many teachers throughout my education. I tried to write down what came to my mind and put my own twist on things, but that was not the "right" way to write papers. In order to make both my teachers and my grades happy, I wrote what they wanted to hear, and even then I was not to the level they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. My Development as a Writer Essays My English Literature major has helped me to achieve an outstanding level of appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of both American and British Literature. As a high school AP English student, I struggled through great works like Hamlet and To the Lighthouse. My teacher's daily lectures (there was no such thing as class discussion) taught me merely to interpret the works as critics had in the past. I did not enjoy the reading or writing process. As a freshman at Loras, I was enrolled in the Critical Writing: Poetry class. For the first time since grade school, my writing ability was praised and the sharing of my ideas was encouraged by an enthusiastic and nurturing professor. Despite the difficulty of poetry, I enjoyed reading it....show more content... The first essay, "The Roles of Women in British Drama," represents my first exposure to a new genre of literature. The essay was also one of my first formal and interpretative essays at the college level. As a woman and a student of literature, I feel a special connection to this essay's topic of women's roles in literature. In addition, this essay shows my "knowledge of the social, political, philosophical, and religious forces that influence authors and the people they write about" (Oral/Portfolio). After reading some of the most prominent British plays of the twentieth century, I observed a discontinuity in the roles of women in this genre. Sadly, women's roles in literature were very similar to their role in society. During the twentieth century, women were still trying and failing to emerge out of the roles they had been cast in by a male dominated society. Even though women were almost always portrayed as inferior to men, I found a strong exception to this stereotype through the role of Thomasina. I admire Thomasina's intelligence and wit, but I truly admire Tom Stoppard for creating this character. As a senior revising and expanding this essay, I realized how much I have grown as a writer and a student of literature. When I began revising, I realized that the focus of the paper needed to be narrowed and focused more on the play Arcadia, in which Thomasina is the exception to the types of women characters stereotypically Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Growing As A Writer Essay Growing as a writer " There are your radish seeds everyone." Said Mr. Susick. The whole class looked around at each other with a blank confused face. It was the first day of junior year in my English class. Mr. Susick started talking about how our first assignment would be to grow radishes. We were all thinking, how in the world does gardening relate to English class. I had heard about this project from previous juniors but none of them said what the real reason was. All Mr. Susick said was that you need to let the project teach itself and get into nature. He left us with one bit of information along with the requirements to start. The main goal of the assignment was to extract your own universal truths. For the first time in English class,...show more content... I had to watch tutorials and read a book about gardening to formalize myself. Reading a book about gardening was an interesting switch of genres compared to what is usually read for assignments. Also, I though the main part of the project was to grow radishes, there was still a lot of English mixed in. With every step in gardening, we had to journal and describe the experience. Journaling every single day about a seed you could not even see yet was difficult. Making the habit of writing at least a paragraph everyday did help me improve in my writing. In my previous English classes, I would only have to write for big papers or essay responses on tests. As for this the change seemed more beneficial cause I was using my skills every through the two months of the project. By having to write about something different my vocabulary did expand. Though the project was an assignment everyday it helped me stay interested in it. Having to water my radishes and write about them was kind of fun. Also, along the journey of growing them you had to take pictures of your progress. So, I could go back and watch the transformation before my eyes. With the gardening aspect of the assignment, it brought it to live and actually represented something. Overall, all of my hard work and staying on top of my assignment finally paid Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Growing As A Writer Growing as a Writer From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. I started out the year writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a more clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer. After analyzing many of my written works, I highlighted my writing weaknesses along with notable strengths. Evident in my earlier works, my vocabulary was more basic and was not as powerful unlike my more recent essays. Seeking to improve, I started utilizing words I learned during the year...show more content... I began writing with basic vocabulary and barely any sentence variety. As the year progressed, I learned to advance my vocabulary and word choice in addition to incorporating a diversity of sentence structure. Nearing the end of the school year, I acknowledge that I have grown and learned more about writing. I anticipate that I will receive even more arduous writing assignments that require more research and time. Although it will be challenging, I feel confident that I will do well because I feel well prepared from all I've done this year. As I grow older, I will have to continue to write. • 11. What It Means To Be A Writer Essay When I think of what it means to be a writer, I do not envision myself– at least not anymore. I don't think I ever will again. In order to refer to myself as a writer, I believe I would have to wholeheartedly enjoy the content of which I write about, but unfortunately a combination of predetermined school prompts, a lack of time, and a dwindling creative flow prevents me from doing so. It wasn't always this way, however. I wasn't aware of it at the time, but during my formative years of life my imagination (as most four to five year olds' are) was at its height. I look back on those years and picture swirling images, a vibrant display of watercolors blending seamlessly into each other, light and darkness all at once, creatures unimaginable to everyone except my own mind, and the warm feeling of believing there are never–ending possibilities. These visions, no matter how sensational, are how I remember my imagination during my youth. To me, the world was endless. I had nothing to fear. So satisfactory it was to believe...show more content... I was entered into the "I Am An Author" program and wrote my own picture book about a mermaid. As one would expect, the plot was cringeworthy and the conclusion didn't make any sense, but I guess that's what you get when you give a kindergartener a pencil and paper. I worked hard at storytelling throughout the rest of elementary school, continuing to enter contests and even winning a few. My imagination was unrestrictable to the point where I was thinking of short story ideas so quickly that I barely had time to write an idea down before I thought of a new one. Stories of slugs, poems about waterfalls, narratives of Betsy Ross (I was obsessed with her...), and adaptations of Jack and the Beanstalk littered my notebooks throughout the years. My mind was vibrant, youthful, and alive. Unfortunately, all of this would be coming to an end near the end of fifth Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay On Becoming A Writer I remember distinctly the first time I was exposed to how writing, and specifically my own words on paper, could compel another person to feel emotion. How they understood what I was feeling and thinking, simply by the words I wrote. I was in eighth grade and my English teacher was giving me praise for a paper I had written on my parents' divorce. For the first time, writing wasn't about getting an "A" or following a five paragraph system; we had been given minimal guidelines for the paper and I'd thrived. As my teacher, Ms. Palmer, had put it I understood how to "present a factual story while keeping the reader's' interest." She suggested that I submit it to a special essay contest and I was thrilled. Even at my young age, I started to rack my brain trying to ascertain how I could be sure to use writing in my career. Should I be a novelist, a poet, maybe even a screenwriter? All of these different ideas came and went during my phase of pondering. Once I hit high school though, it all became clear to me; how I could help others through my writing. It came to me because of what Ms. Palmer had said; I could make the pain and tribulations of everyday life less difficult, even if just for the small amount of time while someone was reading what I presented to the world. I determined I would be a journalist. I aspire for my writing to make an impact on society, and aid people through the adventure of life. • 14. A Writer's Reflection Essay English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills. With the professors' assistance, I was able to identify the meager...show more content... An aspect that I often struggle with is proper punctuation. Truthfully, I do not know how to correctly use punctuation. When writing, I place punctuation by mimicking authors' formats or by placing them where it feels right. This is present in all of my writing, but I am attempting to improve. Punctuation also plays a part in another weakness of mine, one that is most likely present within this essay. Since middle school, it was engrained in my mind that a good essay is a long essay, so I have a tendency for wordiness. To elongate an essay, I tend to add needless words and sentences. For example, in the rough draft of the Whole Process Essay, I added several unrelated occurrences to elongate the paragraphs. Although my essays were long and wordy, the professor commented on vagueness and unclearness within the whole process and practice essay. Sometimes, I disregard the fact that the reader might not know what it is I am writing about or the sentence makes perfect sense to me. The latter is the most common, I quickly read the sentence and it appears fine to me. Within the Whole Process Essay, another weakness was brought to my attention. I lack structure, a key element in effective writing. Within the same essay and a few others, I simply added what felt right, sometimes the result would be acceptable but in other instances, it was a long, jumbled mess. Once these weaknesses were revealed, I worked on improving my current works. There were several elements I had Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 16. Me as a Writer As a writer, I think that I am not as good as I thought I was back in high school. I see myself as a student who tries their best, but makes "B" average work. I have never really taken the time to relate to my papers. I always just wrote what the teacher wanted and handed it in. In my mind, I never really liked trying to explain in full detail what something meant. Back in high school, my teachers always wanted me to explain my writing in such depth that a kindergartener would understand why Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. Trying to explain my writing was always very tiring. I often would get bored trying to explain and just stop writing and do something else for a while. Most of the time in high school I didn't like writing. Mainly...show more content... One way to calm my inner critic is a quote from Allegra Goodman's article called Calming the Inner Critic and Getting to Work on page 309. "Love your material. Nothing frightens the inner critic more than the writer who loves her work. The writer who is enamored of her material forgets all about censoring herself. She doesn't stop to wonder if her book is any good, or who will publish it, or what people will think. She writes in a trance, losing track of time, hearing only her characters in her head." What this means to me is that if I truly let my mind go and only focus on the material, I will be able to write the paper without having my inner critic confuse me. In an article called The Composing Processes of Unskilled College Writers by Sondra Pearl on page 201, there is a strategy that I used to help with writing a paper. "Given any topic, the first operation he performed was to focus in and narrow down the topic. He did this by rephrasing the topic until either a word or an idea in the topic linked up with something in his own experience (an attitude, an opinion, an event). In this way he established a connection between the field of discourse and himself and at this point he felt ready to write." The strategy that he uses to organize his thoughts is the same way I start my papers. I start with just words that relate to the topic and figure out how to put them in my writing so they make sense to the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. The Role of a Writer Essay Before one can truly appreciate a writer's role, they should take a quick walk down memory lane. Writers have been around as long ago as 25,000 to 30,000 b.c, painting pictures on cave walls was one way how they would expressed what others could not say. Later in 2900 b.c the Egyptians developed hieroglyphic writing. The first alphabet script appeared in Palestine at about 160 b.c, this script influenced many scripts to be created. Historic writers started with stone and clay tablets to express their thoughts. Next, were the papyrus rolls and parchment paper made from dried needs of China. Later, in 105 b.c, a man by the name of Tsai Lun of China invented what we have all used since creation; paper. And with the creation of the woodblock...show more content... Writers are necessary in our every day lives and are so easily overlooked. Which is why my attention was captured to this quote, "The role of a writer is not to say what we can all say, but what we are unable to say." is the quote I could most relate to. Although I have no problem expressing myself, there may be a better approach with wiser words. That is what I enjoy most about reading. There is so much to learn with different authors writing. The saying, "Read between the lines" is an expression I was brought up hearing, not always understanding what it meant at the time, but it came to mind when I chose this quote. The role of a writer is challenging at times, it is very difficult to have a conversation with an individual without losing their interest, much less writing a novel. That is not because the conversation is boring or the author did not write a great novel. It is because the average attention span is eight seconds of interest on a focused attention point. If a person enjoys what they are doing and are motivated to do it, they will have an longer attention span. That is why a writer's style, theme, and tone of a book are so important. Not every book is for every ones liking. I, myself, prefer non–fiction stories because I put myself in the characters shoes. These writings are filled with real events of people. For example, some are very sad and lonely, while others are dramatic and adventurous. But before I started to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
