shelfing from old windows, doors and mirrors, brings new life into old material. This will help with recycling and cutting down trees.
If we conserve and produce from already defined waste materials we can avoid toxic chemicals through manufacturing goods. Recycling helps slow
down and control global warming. "One ton of grass results in energy savings of more than 300 percent and lowers carbon dioxide emissions by 346
tons." Recycling reduces water pollutions, turning trees into paper is the most water–intensive industrial process in the United States. Paper recycling
mills nearly always use less water and they don't pollute the water nearly as much. Recycling can be fun. It's good for our environment. (Who)
Recycling isn't new. For centuries recycling was a way of life. People didn't waste anything. They found ways to reuse items over again. Pilgrims and
Indians lived off the land and conserved items from livestock and agriculture. Besides using animals for meat, early settlers used the animal hides for
survival as well. The hide was reused for clothing, pouches, shoes, boots, and blankets. Furniture was produced from animal skin. Early settlers learned
to make tools, weapons and jewelry from bones.
It is estimated we use 40 million tons of food each year. We have become a wasteful society. In addition, electronical waste of old computers and
electronic devices is known as e–waste. Over 70 million computers are sitting in landfills. E–waste is growing as new devices and better technology is
being developed in our society today. Out with old in with the new increases throughout the year as new electronical devices are being made. We need

supply of drinking water.
On average, Americans will use an equivalent of seven trees a year. Six hundred, eighty pounds of paper will mostly be thrown away and not recycled.
It takes about 24 trees to make a single ton of printed paper. A single faucet dripping a drop per second will waste 540 gallons of water in a year. For
each ton of glass that is recycled, a ton of natural

Persuasive Essay On Plastic Bag Recycling
Plastic bag recycling would bring great benefits to our planet earth, but it takes the support of citizens to promote this. A town "Gulftowne" (Jones
1) is being persistantly serious about making it mandatory to have shoppers use reusable bags in place of plastic and or paper bags. First of all, by
using "reusable shopping bags" (Jones 1) it would majorly help by avoiding some of the littering and threaten of wildlife. Second of all, the "Cutting
down trees to make paper greatly dimishes our forests" (Jones 2). However, "Gulftowne rely on tourists to make a living." (Jones 7) and did not think
beyond the grocery stores when considering this proposterous ordinance. In addition to this, the price and maintence needed to keep up with reusable

For instance, what about the small business? Such as a gift shop. Tourists buy small items like figurines that don't require a reusable bags or will these
be in all sizes?. "Many vacation purchases fit into bags no larger than an envelope." (Jones 8) Therefore, considering to make this ordinance mandatory
would make abosolutely no sense. While the canvas man–made reusable bags are excellent idea to comply and provide great care of our environment,
other major factors would have be taken into consideration. The fact that "Eventually the purchase of resusable bags is more cost–effective." (Jones 4)
It would also be taken an extra cost for those that own small business. To conclude, "If this ordinance goes into effect" (Jones 11) Gulftwne better
have all their set of rules and regulation in order. Also, have into prespective on how they will also provide these reusable bags to those that are not
able to afford them and with time, to also be able to replace at little to no

Should Recycling Be Mandatory? Essay
Research Paper:
Should Recycle be mandatory?
February 15, 2011
Should recycling be mandatory?
Is recycling really going green with the environment? Or is recycling just a way to go for green material known as dollars? Recycling is a method in
which materials that are not used anymore by people are processed in order to transform them in useful products. In the recent years, recycling has
caused a lot of controversies whether if it is a good way to go green and help planet's health or if it is just a big misconception driven by the media and
the government. Some experts in the issue affirm that this practice is still running because recycling was transformed into a political issue that helps
government and environmentalists to win...show more content...
Organizations that support recycling usually discuss that recycling is not a waste of money and that sometimes it helps to save and earn more
money. According to the NRC recycling creates 1.1 million U.S. jobs. For every job collecting recyclables, there are 26 jobs in processing the
materials and manufacturing them into new products (Recycling Benefits, 2010). Even thought these facts seem to be a very good support for
recycling, they are not. According to Douglass (2003), "the cost of collecting and sorting recyclables has exceeded their market prices in most
parts of America, forcing most recycling programs to operate at a deficit". It is more expensive to collect a ton of recyclables that a ton of landfill
garbage. Many local government have been in the necessity of cancelling their recycling programs because after all, those programs always end
operating at a deficit. In addition, councilman Paul Thurman of Chillicothe, Ohio, a city that dropped its recycling program because of its high
cost and little profit said, "To me, it's [the recycling program] just a waste of tax money" (as cited in Douglass, 2003). Recycling also creates many
jobs, just as the NRC said, but the problem is that in many cases the local governments do not have the enough money to pay for all those new jobs
created by recycling; and that is another reason why recycling programs usually operate at a deficit. Recycling is a very expensive

Recycling Speech
Introduction: There are many different reasons and advantages of recycling old materials to turn into new, similar products. Recycling benefits relate to
many different areas, some of which could greatly improve the air we breathe, and the environment. Today I will talk to you about the importance of
recycling, what we can do to save the earth and its natural resources. Conservation, energy, pollution, and landfill reduction are four of the major
reasons why we are not going to be around as long as we would like. We as Americans use approximately 3 to 7 planets to support our lifestyles, if
we were to reduce, reuse make do and do without some of the things in our life that we could live without we would save some of the things that are

Not only save money, have you also reduced the demand for such fossil fuels coal, oil, and natural gas. Less burning of fossil fuels also means lower
emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary contributor to global warming, and other pollutants. This is another important reason why we should
recycle more, in order to reduce the impact landfills have on the surrounding environment. A. Landfill has affected our environment in many ways
and we need to stop it, we are the only ones who can, yes we have some help from other agencies and some from the government. This is not enough
we as Americans have to be the ones to make it happen. B. The process of recycling not only helps to conserve the levels of certain raw materials, but
it also helps to conserve energy in the production of new products.
Transition: Now I will talk to you on how to reuse some of the old things that we normally would just throw away.
A. Buy less, borrow and share more, this is the key to
Conclusion: You do not have to do without to achieve these savings. There is now an energy efficient alternative for almost every kind of appliance or
light fixture. That means that consumers have a real choice and the power to change their energy use on a revolutionary scale.
The average American produces about 40,000 pounds of CO2 emissions per year. Together, we use nearly a million dollars worth of energy every

Arguments For Recycling
Don't Repeat History: An Argument For Recycling In 1987, a barge by the name of Mobro 4000 was struggling to find a place to dump 3,168 tons of
trash. It traveled from Long Island, where the trash came from, down the entire East Coast until it reached Belize. The barge stopped at multiple ports
along the way to dump the trash, but was turned away each time. Many people watched the story unfold on the news, and realized how little landfill
space the country actually had. People frantically started lowering household waste through recycling what was possible to be recycled instead of
throwing it in the trash. This brought us the environmental movement of the late 80's. Some people say the reason the Mobro 4000 wasn't able to
dump over 3,000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) was because they didn't have the appropriate papers filled out to give the barge permission
to dump at a particular landfill site. But others are confident the story is true, and hold the argument that the world is limited on how much landfill
space there is and abide that something needs to be done sooner than later. Whether someone thinks the story is true or not, it is undeniable that
recycling would keep a barge from trying to dump that many tons of trash anytime in the near future. We don't have to recycle every plastic bottle or
piece of paper we come into contact with on a daily basis, but recycling even a few of these items a week can still have a positive outcome. On
average, a typical middle

Recycling to Preserve Our Environment Essay
Many people assume that the environment is not in danger. They believe that as technology advances, we do not need to worry about renewing natural
resources, recycling, and finding new ways to produce energy. They state that one person in the world does not make a large difference. In reality, each
individual's contribution greatly affects our environment. Our natural resources are slowly disappearing, and we must work together to save them and
the Earth from ruin. Recycling is important in the effort to preserve our environment for future generations. We are running out of locations to put
landfills. Recycling is a simple and effective way to reduce the amount of waste stored in landfills, yet many people do not know how easy it can...show

It seems like a small, insignificant action, but the way I see it, I save money on trash bags while getting a second use out of the plastic bags. Some
people would just throw away the bags and buy new trash bags, but doing that would send double the plastic bags to be filled in a landfill. Another
simple way to reduce landfill size and preserve resources is to refill water bottles. By refilling water bottles, people save a considerable amount of
energy and natural resources by not having to purchase single serve bottles, which are made of nonrenewable petroleum. Additionally, the plastic
manufacturing process is associated with toxic byproducts. Most people are reluctant to refill their water bottles because they assume that tap water
is not as ?clean? as bottled water. That is a common misconception, however. In 2000, a study in The Archives of Family Medicine compared 57
samples of bottled water to the tap water in Cleveland and found that while 39 samples of the bottled water were cleaner than tap, more than a dozen
had at least 10 times the bacterial levels found in the city's water. Tap water is often better regulated than bottled water and has to meet more stringent
health standards at both the federal and local levels. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protections (NJDEP) Solid Waste
Management Plan SectionB.1., ?Source Reduction is the first tier of the solid waste management hierarchy. The

Garbage, Recycling, and Waste Management
There are already ways of getting rid of garbage so people won't have to see it or smell it. For example there is incineration, in which trash that can't be
recycled is burned. Although this meets the requirements mentioned above it has a downside. The burning itself causeswaste and eventually it will have
a bad effect on the environment. Recycling is a good process that reuses materials so they won't be wasted and cause waste. But many products are not
recyclable, like plastics.
There are a number of ways to solve the dilemma of collection and transportation of municipal solid waste. An underground system of conveyor belts to
the dump is a possibility. It would...show more content...
But that raises other questions. Obviously, it is evident that this form of disposal does not even dispose of the garbage as much as just simply putting
the trash in a garbage can.
I think the average person would say that it would be a lot easier to, instead of mining ourselves out of our resources, that it would be more
efficient to recycle the parts in our automobiles. That is easier said than done. I think if our politicians were aware of statistics like that, then they
would probably be more involved in helping our environment. Laws should be passed that instead of selling a dead car to a junkyard for a couple
hundred dollars, that people should have to recycle the materials used on those cars. Maybe there would be perks for doing so, but that would
definitely help out this crisis. Before all that can happen though, research needs to be made on how to successfully recycle these materials. Once this
can be done, through the cooperation of politicians, scientists, and automobile owners, we will soon be living in a better environment.
One of the problems with saying that people need to use more decomposable material is that most family members will not let their kin be buried
unless they're buried with class. Decomposable materials, like wood and certain chemicals, would not be considered "classy". Simply put, once
people decompose, they do not really need a coffin. If we are able to fashion these decomposable materials into better–looking coffins, I think it will

America is in the lead for producing the most waste, producing 236 million tons annually. Not only are we producing the most waste but by 2100
scientists estimate the amount will triple which will have serious effects on the Earth. Both physical effects and fiscal which means public services

Essay about The Importance of Recycling
You know when you're walking down the street, drinking your bottled soft drink or water; as you go to throw the bottle away in the trash, have you
notice how many of the items in the trash are recyclable. Current reports show that about 80% of the trash that is thrown away is recyclable.
Recycling is the third "R" of the three "R's": Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Recycling is defined as taking a product or material at the end of its useful
life, and turning it into a usable raw material to create another product. According to Ivanhoe Broadcast News, each year the average American family
throws out 2,460 pounds of paper, 540 pounds of metals, 480 pounds of glass and 480 pounds of food scraps. In conclusion the average American

Rather, encourage consumers to recycle used items to further benefit our environment. A professor by the name of James Katz, states that Current
statistics show that two billion people currently have subscriptions for cellular phones. Imagine of everyone you know who has either lost or
upgraded their phone, and of how many of these people have recycled their outdated devices. I have had a cell phone since I was 16, I am now 19,
and I can say that I have gone through an average of one cell phone a year, think of the amount that two billion people go through. It's not only
creating more piled up junk in landfills, but it is also creating companies to take more of our natural resource to create more cell phones; when a
billion of cell phones are just lying around being unused. I think that people would be more aware or open to recycling there old cell phones and
cell phone batteries if it was more accessible. Most cellular company's don't have "drop offs" set up, in which I personality think is very
irresponsible and plain ignorant because doing such could save them a lot of money. One thing that has come into effect is making the recycling of
car batteries mandatory, if we can recycle car batteries, honestly why can't it be as easy to recycle cell phones. There are probably about the same if
not more cell phones then

Recycling Recycling
Recycling is the process of collecting used materials, commonly known as waste, and creating new products to prevent the waste of potentially useful
materials. Over the years, businesses started to associate themselves with recycling and being environmentally friendly. However, large coffee
corporations do not feel like they need to abide their rules and regulations. Claiming to recycle paper cups allows them to maintain good relations in the
public's eye, but this is not what actually happens behind the scenes. As a result of that, the recycling of paper cups should be more regulated.
The recycling of paper cups should be more regulated and that is due to the Corporate Social Responsibility that each organization should have.

However, that should not be applicable for these corporations to neglect the recycling process. Pollution is increasing and coffee shops are held
accountable for that by selling those cups. Other stakeholders such as NGOs feel that these shops are obligated to provide solutions and be more
regulated. NGOs are very important stakeholders because they can put pressure on governments to change policies resulting in more difficult business
regulations. So, it is better for them to regulate their paper cup recycling themselves than for the government doing it for them. Finally, addressing
social problems can become financial opportunities such as charging an additional fee for every paper cup purchased to cover up the extra cost of
recycling.
Ultimately, the recycling of paper cups should be more regulated and that is due to the CSR that each organization should have. By doing so, the
pollution would decrease and other stakeholders will be satisfied.

Recycling Is It Working
Recycling: Is it Working?
"The affluent, fast–paced, throwaway American culture is producing trash on a stupendous scale." (Young,Mitchell page 14). We are living in a
plastic universe, and very unaware. The problem with plastic, is how frequently it is being used, and having no true way of disposing it. The fibers of
plastic are in just about everything on Earth, not only is it sitting inside the Earth, it is in everything surrounding us. There is plastic materials in food
containers, make up, fuel, and so much more. Using science, and technology, we need to find new ways of disposing unwanted shreds of plastic, and
other recyclables. Recycling might not get rid of all the issues growing with global warming, but being aware of what is being...show more content...
The recycling system most of America uses, is flawed, like the majority of any type of system, used in America. The main type of recycling
companies, use machines that "sort" through the different types of plastic, then proceeds to be melted or crushed into one hunk of plastic.
(Terry,Beth page 73) On the contrary, the plastic we recycle, does not stay in the U.S.A, we send it to China, to then be used to resell back to us
("Made in China: Our Toxic, Imported Air Pollution"). Not only do we do the main processing, the machines often get clogged with the thin
plastic bags, so most of them do not even get to the melting stage. Plastic bags really are just a nuisance, with no positive attributes. Washington
D.C. even put a tax on plastic bags, in hopes to reduce the amount being distributed. It worked, but too well. ("No Paper, No Plastic. The Tax That
Works Too Well.") According to a survey made by councilman Tommy Wells, the use of plastic bags by shoppers has dropped 50% ("No Paper, No
Plastic. The Tax That Works Too Well"). In even better news, for the supporters of a clean Earth, the funds that were made by the tax, are now being
used toward clean–up efforts for the Anacostia River, which is a polluted urban waterway clogged with plastic bags. Since the clean up began, the
amount of plastic found in the river have significantly decreased. Legislature members are arguing though, that with the decreased amount of plastic
bags being used, so will the contamination in the river, thus making the clean up crew pointless. The tax created to help reduce the amount of plastic
bags, is slowly making its way around, California tried the bill, but was not passed. Getting involved in your community, can help the government pass
bills, like the plastic bag

Imagine walking down a forest path, feeling the crisp fall breeze, hearing the birds chirping, breathing in the fresh air. The earth's environment is
wonderful and as stewards of this plant, it is every human's job to protect and even enhance its beauty. Dumping incinerated garbage into a hole in the
Earth is not exactly being a good steward. However, science has developed the technology of recycling, and people should use this blessing as readily
as possible. In other words, everyone should recycle, and if they won't do it on their own, recycling should become a requirement. Recycling should be
mandatory because it helps minimize pollution, conserve energy, preserve natural resources, and create jobs.
To begin, recycling helps minimize pollution. Go outside, can you see the stars? If not, it's because of pollution. A major contributor to air pollution is
the burning of waste that is sent to landfills. In fact, if recycling levels increase to 75% in the United States, it will have the same effect on carbon
dioxide levels as if 55 million cars were removed from U.S. roads every year (Recycle). Recycling helps to reduce waste sent to incinerators, and
thus reduces air pollution. Even through the processing of recycled items, pollution is lessened. For instance, studies show that "recycled paper
produces approximately 70% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials" ("Forty"). Air pollution both harms the earth and the people on
it by contributing to global warming as well as respiratory diseases. That's why every time people reduce waste, reuse, and recycle their garbage, they
save the earth and even millions of lives from the harmful effects of pollution. Overall, requiring recycling will allow pollution rates to plummet and
the environmental state of the earth to improve.
Recycling also helps to conserve energy. It takes a considerable amount of energy to create the number of plastic bottles or aluminum cans required in
the current world, creating large amounts of harmful emissions both into the air and sometimes into marine ecosystems. Recycling can help reduce
energy used to manufacture such products because making them from recycled materials takes less energy. For example, if plastic

According to the EPA, in 2014, 259 million tons of the average person's trash was
thrown away, with about 30% of waste being recycled, this amounts to 169 million tons of
materials being wasted. This high amount of waste ends up in landfills, which lets harmful
chemicals rise up together and contribute to the greenhouse effect, which in turn contributes to
global warming. Recycling should be mandatory for everyone because it preserves earth's finite
resources and keeps pollution, like greenhouse gases, down. Earth's resources will eventually run out, today even some societies don't even

millions of trees being used every year, less of the millions of plastics used every year, the
Earth's resources would last so much longer. According to MRC polymers, Americans throw
away about 2,500,000 styrofoam cups an hour, most without recycling. "The 2009 report,
Opportunities to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Materials and Land Management
Practices, shows that approximately 42% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are associated with
the energy used to produce, process, transport, and dispose of the food we eat and the goods we

To Recycle or Not to Recycle?
It's a hot summer day and you're enjoying your nice, cold, refreshing soda from a plastic bottle. You notice a blue bin labeled for plastic recycling
and go to chuck it in however you may want to think twice before you do. Everyone has been told time and time again by teachers, peers, and family
alike to recycle once in their life. It's commonly accepted that recycling materials like paper, glass, and plastics will help our environment and our
health. However recycling plastics is far more bad than good to both our health and the environment. Recycling plastics is harmful to the environment
and human health and we must find a more responsible way to use plastics, recycle them, or do away with them.
Recycling is reusing materials like paper, plastics, and glass, breaking them down and turning them into a new product. This way no materials get
wasted and not as many resources are used up for new products. There are many ways to dispose of waste, in this case plastics; incineration, landfilling,
biodegradation and recycling. Incineration is effective however creates negative environmental risks and health risks by releasing different harmful
gases. Landfilling requires space and many chemicals and energy in plastics are lost in disposal routes. Biodegradable plastics may not degrade fast
enough to avoid a build of plastics and to help the environment. Recycling plastics is time consuming and plastics must be sorted through by the types of

Americans produce millions of tons of waste in our communities every day. On trash pick–up days, we push up carts to the curb and workers dump the
substances into big trucks and tow it away. I still wonder if some even think where the trash is going and the negative impacts it has. Some people after
finishing their meals throw uneaten food, drink cups, and napkins in the same garbage containers. Do they ever think that the more they continue with
this habit, the landfills will end up filled? Or they will realize the consequences after these landfills are a few away from their houses. According to the

In addition, recycling may result in potentially less pure raw materials for small amounts of unrelated materials can be accidentally mixed with
plastics. However, there are many advantages of recycling as compared to the negative outcomes. Landfills are dangerous to the environment because
all the decomposing material along with contaminated substances dumped can pollute water supplies and release toxic gases; therefore the best
solution is to recycle what we can. We should recycle to reduce air and water pollution, to solve the scarcity of landfills, save energy, conserve
natural resources, and for economic benefits. By recycling, we would be reducing the carbon dioxide which is a green house, a major contributor to
global warming. When some products are manufactured, smoke is released in the air and this thickens the ozone layer. Some of the major fossil fuels
used in most industries such as diesel, coal and gasoline emit harmful gases like methane, and sulfur dioxide to the environment. The processing of raw
materials to usable products creates toxic materials. Therefore, by reducing the amount of fuel usage will be reducing unsafe pollutants in the world.
Once the ozone layer is thick, more heat is trapped on earth; thus, causing floods, high temperatures, drought, and extinction of animals such as polar
bears. Rainforests play a major role in maintaining the ecosystem, which humans

Essay 1: Recycling
Recycling has been the environmental crusade to reducing the human footprint, with it's spotlight shining down on in recent years. It was the noblest of
causes, recycling being a great idea for the environment and society; but it is being handled poorly. Its modern descendant has turned into a corporate
scheme with recycling becoming a business, instead of being about the environment because marketers are using environmentalism as a excuse for
overconsumption, recycling products are only being recycled for profit, and cities & big business use inflated numbers to attain media attention. Let's
now take a look at the bread and butter of...show more content...
Companies are using environmentalism as a straw man for overconsumption. Coming straight out of writer Amy Westervelt's article, "Can Recycling
Be Bad for the Environment?", Westervelt clearly sees through this ploy of emotional appeal, stating "American consumers
Cohen, 2 assuage any guilt they might feel about consuming mass quantities of unnecessary, disposable goods by dutifully tossing these items into
their recycling bins and hauling them out to the curb each week". (Westervelt, Amy. "Can Recycling Be Bad for the Environment?" Forbes. Forbes
Magazine, 25 Apr. 2012. Web. 5 Dec. 2015). So why is the reason that companies are starting to "Go Green"? Its clearly obvious that the change in
America from an industrial country to a environmental country has taught big business how to market environmentalism in mass quantities of their
product. The strategy of the consumption–environment mindset are increasing rapidly. If this trend of buying without thinking does not slow down,
with problems like not shifting priority from consumption to being environmentally aware, things will certainly worsen. On the topic of green
marketing, people often see that green marketing refers to the advertising of objects or products with environmental characteristics to them (Like the
Nestle bottle, for example). Terms like "Environmentally Friendly", "Refillable", and "Recyclable", are some of the things people associate with green
marketing. In reality

The Pros And Cons Of Recycling
One of the biggest problems that the world struggles with is the way that humans handle waste, especially recyclable material, in the environment.
Plastic bottles ride raves from one continent to another. Plastic bags float through the air and the streets like they are stereotypical tumbleweeds in
an old western movie. Papers and cardboard boxes piled up on top of one another and thrown into the trash or travel through the air. Metal cans litter
the gutters of the street. Due to the fact that Rhode Island is a meagerly sized state, people can simply blow these issues off as someone or some other
state's problem. However, the citizens of Rhode Island are major stakeholders when it comes to the improper handling of both waste and recycling in the
state. There is nothing that Rhode Islanders can do to completely solve the myriad of problems that plague the area. The Central Landfill in Johnston
will always have too much waste and recyclable material in it, improper materials fill recycling receptacles, and a number of products can contaminate
entire truckloads of recycling. But, there are ways where people can become active and seek change in places such as their houses or their
neighborhood.
What Is the Difference Between Recycling and Waste
Recyclables are materials that are used, sorted, cleaned, and then processed into new materials for manufacturers. Plastics, metal cans and containers,
and paper materials are the most common types of recyclable materials. Recycling is important to control greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy
usage, lower water pollution, and save resources (PM's 1). The recycling is a simple three–step process. First, the Environmental Protection Agency
states are the collection and processing of materials. Town trucks drive around neighborhoods and collect whatever citizens put in their recycling bins.
Then, the trucks bring them to a recovery facility where the sorting, cleaning, processing, and selling of the products takes place. Next, the bought
materials turn into newspapers, paper towels, plastic, cans, and glass containers. The process repeats until the materials cannot be reused alone so a
multitude of people use them in roads and cars (United 1).
It is important to note that

Why Recycling Is Bad
Recycling Is Bad RECYCLING IS BAD! Recycling is not , although there are beneficial to the environment There are some benefits to recycling
there are more disadvantages than advantages. Recycling cost a lot of money and has no big advantages to our personal lives. When recycling you
use up a lot of energy, but using up all of that energy, is it actually worth it? Would still recycle if you knew the consequences? When your
compacting the trash plastics have to be put with the plastics if not the whole batch will be messed up. Since people are the ones separating the
recyclables there is a high chance of a mess up. But if they don't mess up the batch it can be helpful to the enviroment.

Persuasive Speech On Recycling

  • 1. Persuasive Speech On Recycling shelfing from old windows, doors and mirrors, brings new life into old material. This will help with recycling and cutting down trees. If we conserve and produce from already defined waste materials we can avoid toxic chemicals through manufacturing goods. Recycling helps slow down and control global warming. "One ton of grass results in energy savings of more than 300 percent and lowers carbon dioxide emissions by 346 tons." Recycling reduces water pollutions, turning trees into paper is the most water–intensive industrial process in the United States. Paper recycling mills nearly always use less water and they don't pollute the water nearly as much. Recycling can be fun. It's good for our environment. (Who) Recycling isn't new. For centuries recycling was a way of life. People didn't waste anything. They found ways to reuse items over again. Pilgrims and Indians lived off the land and conserved items from livestock and agriculture. Besides using animals for meat, early settlers used the animal hides for survival as well. The hide was reused for clothing, pouches, shoes, boots, and blankets. Furniture was produced from animal skin. Early settlers learned to make tools, weapons and jewelry from bones. It is estimated we use 40 million tons of food each year. We have become a wasteful society. In addition, electronical waste of old computers and electronic devices is known as e–waste. Over 70 million computers are sitting in landfills. E–waste is growing as new devices and better technology is being developed in our society today. Out with old in with the new increases throughout the year as new electronical devices are being made. We need to educate Seils 5 society that E–waste are toxic materials that collect in landfills and contaminates the soil and water. It contaminates our food sources and limits supply of drinking water. For each ton of glass that is recycled, a ton of natural Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Persuasive Essay On Plastic Bag Recycling Plastic bag recycling would bring great benefits to our planet earth, but it takes the support of citizens to promote this. A town "Gulftowne" (Jones 1) is being persistantly serious about making it mandatory to have shoppers use reusable bags in place of plastic and or paper bags. First of all, by using "reusable shopping bags" (Jones 1) it would majorly help by avoiding some of the littering and threaten of wildlife. Second of all, the "Cutting down trees to make paper greatly dimishes our forests" (Jones 2). However, "Gulftowne rely on tourists to make a living." (Jones 7) and did not think beyond the grocery stores when considering this proposterous ordinance. In addition to this, the price and maintence needed to keep up with reusable bas would have to be taken into consideration as well. According to Jones...show more content... For instance, what about the small business? Such as a gift shop. Tourists buy small items like figurines that don't require a reusable bags or will these be in all sizes?. "Many vacation purchases fit into bags no larger than an envelope." (Jones 8) Therefore, considering to make this ordinance mandatory would make abosolutely no sense. While the canvas man–made reusable bags are excellent idea to comply and provide great care of our environment, other major factors would have be taken into consideration. The fact that "Eventually the purchase of resusable bags is more cost–effective." (Jones 4) It would also be taken an extra cost for those that own small business. To conclude, "If this ordinance goes into effect" (Jones 11) Gulftwne better have all their set of rules and regulation in order. Also, have into prespective on how they will also provide these reusable bags to those that are not able to afford them and with time, to also be able to replace at little to no Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Should Recycling Be Mandatory? Essay Research Paper: Should Recycle be mandatory? February 15, 2011 Should recycling be mandatory? Is recycling really going green with the environment? Or is recycling just a way to go for green material known as dollars? Recycling is a method in which materials that are not used anymore by people are processed in order to transform them in useful products. In the recent years, recycling has caused a lot of controversies whether if it is a good way to go green and help planet's health or if it is just a big misconception driven by the media and the government. Some experts in the issue affirm that this practice is still running because recycling was transformed into a political issue that helps government and environmentalists to win...show more content... Organizations that support recycling usually discuss that recycling is not a waste of money and that sometimes it helps to save and earn more money. According to the NRC recycling creates 1.1 million U.S. jobs. For every job collecting recyclables, there are 26 jobs in processing the materials and manufacturing them into new products (Recycling Benefits, 2010). Even thought these facts seem to be a very good support for recycling, they are not. According to Douglass (2003), "the cost of collecting and sorting recyclables has exceeded their market prices in most parts of America, forcing most recycling programs to operate at a deficit". It is more expensive to collect a ton of recyclables that a ton of landfill garbage. Many local government have been in the necessity of cancelling their recycling programs because after all, those programs always end operating at a deficit. In addition, councilman Paul Thurman of Chillicothe, Ohio, a city that dropped its recycling program because of its high cost and little profit said, "To me, it's [the recycling program] just a waste of tax money" (as cited in Douglass, 2003). Recycling also creates many jobs, just as the NRC said, but the problem is that in many cases the local governments do not have the enough money to pay for all those new jobs created by recycling; and that is another reason why recycling programs usually operate at a deficit. Recycling is a very expensive Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Recycling Speech Introduction: There are many different reasons and advantages of recycling old materials to turn into new, similar products. Recycling benefits relate to many different areas, some of which could greatly improve the air we breathe, and the environment. Today I will talk to you about the importance of recycling, what we can do to save the earth and its natural resources. Conservation, energy, pollution, and landfill reduction are four of the major reasons why we are not going to be around as long as we would like. We as Americans use approximately 3 to 7 planets to support our lifestyles, if we were to reduce, reuse make do and do without some of the things in our life that we could live without we would save some of the things that are ...show more content... Not only save money, have you also reduced the demand for such fossil fuels coal, oil, and natural gas. Less burning of fossil fuels also means lower emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary contributor to global warming, and other pollutants. This is another important reason why we should recycle more, in order to reduce the impact landfills have on the surrounding environment. A. Landfill has affected our environment in many ways and we need to stop it, we are the only ones who can, yes we have some help from other agencies and some from the government. This is not enough we as Americans have to be the ones to make it happen. B. The process of recycling not only helps to conserve the levels of certain raw materials, but it also helps to conserve energy in the production of new products. Transition: Now I will talk to you on how to reuse some of the old things that we normally would just throw away. A. Buy less, borrow and share more, this is the key to Conclusion: You do not have to do without to achieve these savings. There is now an energy efficient alternative for almost every kind of appliance or light fixture. That means that consumers have a real choice and the power to change their energy use on a revolutionary scale. The average American produces about 40,000 pounds of CO2 emissions per year. Together, we use nearly a million dollars worth of energy every Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Arguments For Recycling Don't Repeat History: An Argument For Recycling In 1987, a barge by the name of Mobro 4000 was struggling to find a place to dump 3,168 tons of trash. It traveled from Long Island, where the trash came from, down the entire East Coast until it reached Belize. The barge stopped at multiple ports along the way to dump the trash, but was turned away each time. Many people watched the story unfold on the news, and realized how little landfill space the country actually had. People frantically started lowering household waste through recycling what was possible to be recycled instead of throwing it in the trash. This brought us the environmental movement of the late 80's. Some people say the reason the Mobro 4000 wasn't able to dump over 3,000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) was because they didn't have the appropriate papers filled out to give the barge permission to dump at a particular landfill site. But others are confident the story is true, and hold the argument that the world is limited on how much landfill space there is and abide that something needs to be done sooner than later. Whether someone thinks the story is true or not, it is undeniable that recycling would keep a barge from trying to dump that many tons of trash anytime in the near future. We don't have to recycle every plastic bottle or piece of paper we come into contact with on a daily basis, but recycling even a few of these items a week can still have a positive outcome. On average, a typical middle Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Recycling to Preserve Our Environment Essay Many people assume that the environment is not in danger. They believe that as technology advances, we do not need to worry about renewing natural resources, recycling, and finding new ways to produce energy. They state that one person in the world does not make a large difference. In reality, each individual's contribution greatly affects our environment. Our natural resources are slowly disappearing, and we must work together to save them and the Earth from ruin. Recycling is important in the effort to preserve our environment for future generations. We are running out of locations to put landfills. Recycling is a simple and effective way to reduce the amount of waste stored in landfills, yet many people do not know how easy it can...show more content... It seems like a small, insignificant action, but the way I see it, I save money on trash bags while getting a second use out of the plastic bags. Some people would just throw away the bags and buy new trash bags, but doing that would send double the plastic bags to be filled in a landfill. Another simple way to reduce landfill size and preserve resources is to refill water bottles. By refilling water bottles, people save a considerable amount of energy and natural resources by not having to purchase single serve bottles, which are made of nonrenewable petroleum. Additionally, the plastic manufacturing process is associated with toxic byproducts. Most people are reluctant to refill their water bottles because they assume that tap water is not as ?clean? as bottled water. That is a common misconception, however. In 2000, a study in The Archives of Family Medicine compared 57 samples of bottled water to the tap water in Cleveland and found that while 39 samples of the bottled water were cleaner than tap, more than a dozen had at least 10 times the bacterial levels found in the city's water. Tap water is often better regulated than bottled water and has to meet more stringent health standards at both the federal and local levels. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protections (NJDEP) Solid Waste Management Plan SectionB.1., ?Source Reduction is the first tier of the solid waste management hierarchy. • 7. Essay on Garbage, Recycling, and Waste Management Garbage, Recycling, and Waste Management There are already ways of getting rid of garbage so people won't have to see it or smell it. For example there is incineration, in which trash that can't be recycled is burned. Although this meets the requirements mentioned above it has a downside. The burning itself causeswaste and eventually it will have a bad effect on the environment. Recycling is a good process that reuses materials so they won't be wasted and cause waste. But many products are not recyclable, like plastics. There are a number of ways to solve the dilemma of collection and transportation of municipal solid waste. An underground system of conveyor belts to the dump is a possibility. It would...show more content... But that raises other questions. Obviously, it is evident that this form of disposal does not even dispose of the garbage as much as just simply putting the trash in a garbage can. I think the average person would say that it would be a lot easier to, instead of mining ourselves out of our resources, that it would be more efficient to recycle the parts in our automobiles. That is easier said than done. I think if our politicians were aware of statistics like that, then they would probably be more involved in helping our environment. Laws should be passed that instead of selling a dead car to a junkyard for a couple hundred dollars, that people should have to recycle the materials used on those cars. Maybe there would be perks for doing so, but that would definitely help out this crisis. Before all that can happen though, research needs to be made on how to successfully recycle these materials. Once this can be done, through the cooperation of politicians, scientists, and automobile owners, we will soon be living in a better environment. One of the problems with saying that people need to use more decomposable material is that most family members will not let their kin be buried unless they're buried with class. Decomposable materials, like wood and certain chemicals, would not be considered "classy". Simply put, once people decompose, they do not really need a coffin. If we are able to fashion these decomposable materials into better–looking coffins, I think it will Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Imagine a world cluttered with trash, once beautiful beaches and parks now overflowing with garbage. Roads no longer driveable, air no longer clean. Masks will be worn, and disease is on the rise. Now, imagine if you could have prevented this. I believe recycling is the first step. As of 2006 America is in the lead for producing the most waste, producing 236 million tons annually. Not only are we producing the most waste but by 2100 scientists estimate the amount will triple which will have serious effects on the Earth. Both physical effects and fiscal which means public services and government budgets will be impacted. Our planet is already feeling the effects of pollution at the rate we're going we won't be able to stop the damage nor repair Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 11. Essay about The Importance of Recycling You know when you're walking down the street, drinking your bottled soft drink or water; as you go to throw the bottle away in the trash, have you notice how many of the items in the trash are recyclable. Current reports show that about 80% of the trash that is thrown away is recyclable. Recycling is the third "R" of the three "R's": Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Recycling is defined as taking a product or material at the end of its useful life, and turning it into a usable raw material to create another product. According to Ivanhoe Broadcast News, each year the average American family throws out 2,460 pounds of paper, 540 pounds of metals, 480 pounds of glass and 480 pounds of food scraps. In conclusion the average American throws away...show more content... Rather, encourage consumers to recycle used items to further benefit our environment. A professor by the name of James Katz, states that Current statistics show that two billion people currently have subscriptions for cellular phones. Imagine of everyone you know who has either lost or upgraded their phone, and of how many of these people have recycled their outdated devices. I have had a cell phone since I was 16, I am now 19, and I can say that I have gone through an average of one cell phone a year, think of the amount that two billion people go through. It's not only creating more piled up junk in landfills, but it is also creating companies to take more of our natural resource to create more cell phones; when a billion of cell phones are just lying around being unused. I think that people would be more aware or open to recycling there old cell phones and cell phone batteries if it was more accessible. Most cellular company's don't have "drop offs" set up, in which I personality think is very irresponsible and plain ignorant because doing such could save them a lot of money. One thing that has come into effect is making the recycling of car batteries mandatory, if we can recycle car batteries, honestly why can't it be as easy to recycle cell phones. There are probably about the same if not more cell phones then Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Over the years, businesses started to associate themselves with recycling and being environmentally friendly. However, large coffee corporations do not feel like they need to abide their rules and regulations. Claiming to recycle paper cups allows them to maintain good relations in the public's eye, but this is not what actually happens behind the scenes. As a result of that, the recycling of paper cups should be more regulated. However, that should not be applicable for these corporations to neglect the recycling process. Pollution is increasing and coffee shops are held accountable for that by selling those cups. Other stakeholders such as NGOs feel that these shops are obligated to provide solutions and be more regulated. NGOs are very important stakeholders because they can put pressure on governments to change policies resulting in more difficult business regulations. So, it is better for them to regulate their paper cup recycling themselves than for the government doing it for them. Finally, addressing social problems can become financial opportunities such as charging an additional fee for every paper cup purchased to cover up the extra cost of recycling. Ultimately, the recycling of paper cups should be more regulated and that is due to the CSR that each organization should have. By doing so, the pollution would decrease and other stakeholders will be satisfied. We are living in a plastic universe, and very unaware. The problem with plastic, is how frequently it is being used, and having no true way of disposing it. The fibers of plastic are in just about everything on Earth, not only is it sitting inside the Earth, it is in everything surrounding us. There is plastic materials in food containers, make up, fuel, and so much more. Using science, and technology, we need to find new ways of disposing unwanted shreds of plastic, and other recyclables. The recycling system most of America uses, is flawed, like the majority of any type of system, used in America. The main type of recycling companies, use machines that "sort" through the different types of plastic, then proceeds to be melted or crushed into one hunk of plastic. (Terry,Beth page 73) On the contrary, the plastic we recycle, does not stay in the U.S.A, we send it to China, to then be used to resell back to us ("Made in China: Our Toxic, Imported Air Pollution"). Not only do we do the main processing, the machines often get clogged with the thin plastic bags, so most of them do not even get to the melting stage. Plastic bags really are just a nuisance, with no positive attributes. Washington D.C. even put a tax on plastic bags, in hopes to reduce the amount being distributed. It worked, but too well. ("No Paper, No Plastic. The Tax That Works Too Well.") According to a survey made by councilman Tommy Wells, the use of plastic bags by shoppers has dropped 50% ("No Paper, No Plastic. The Tax That Works Too Well"). In even better news, for the supporters of a clean Earth, the funds that were made by the tax, are now being used toward clean–up efforts for the Anacostia River, which is a polluted urban waterway clogged with plastic bags. Since the clean up began, the amount of plastic found in the river have significantly decreased. Legislature members are arguing though, that with the decreased amount of plastic bags being used, so will the contamination in the river, thus making the clean up crew pointless. The tax created to help reduce the amount of plastic bags, is slowly making its way around, California tried the bill, but was not passed. • 14. Imagine walking down a forest path, feeling the crisp fall breeze, hearing the birds chirping, breathing in the fresh air. The earth's environment is wonderful and as stewards of this plant, it is every human's job to protect and even enhance its beauty. Dumping incinerated garbage into a hole in the Earth is not exactly being a good steward. However, science has developed the technology of recycling, and people should use this blessing as readily as possible. In other words, everyone should recycle, and if they won't do it on their own, recycling should become a requirement. Recycling should be mandatory because it helps minimize pollution, conserve energy, preserve natural resources, and create jobs. To begin, recycling helps minimize pollution. Go outside, can you see the stars? If not, it's because of pollution. A major contributor to air pollution is the burning of waste that is sent to landfills. In fact, if recycling levels increase to 75% in the United States, it will have the same effect on carbon dioxide levels as if 55 million cars were removed from U.S. roads every year (Recycle). Recycling helps to reduce waste sent to incinerators, and thus reduces air pollution. Even through the processing of recycled items, pollution is lessened. For instance, studies show that "recycled paper produces approximately 70% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials" ("Forty"). Air pollution both harms the earth and the people on it by contributing to global warming as well as respiratory diseases. That's why every time people reduce waste, reuse, and recycle their garbage, they save the earth and even millions of lives from the harmful effects of pollution. Overall, requiring recycling will allow pollution rates to plummet and the environmental state of the earth to improve. Recycling also helps to conserve energy. It takes a considerable amount of energy to create the number of plastic bottles or aluminum cans required in the current world, creating large amounts of harmful emissions both into the air and sometimes into marine ecosystems. Recycling can help reduce energy used to manufacture such products because making them from recycled materials takes less energy. For example, if plastic Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Recycling According to the EPA, in 2014, 259 million tons of the average person's trash was thrown away, with about 30% of waste being recycled, this amounts to 169 million tons of materials being wasted. This high amount of waste ends up in landfills, which lets harmful chemicals rise up together and contribute to the greenhouse effect, which in turn contributes to global warming. Recycling should be mandatory for everyone because it preserves earth's finite resources and keeps pollution, like greenhouse gases, down. You notice a blue bin labeled for plastic recycling and go to chuck it in however you may want to think twice before you do. Everyone has been told time and time again by teachers, peers, and family alike to recycle once in their life. It's commonly accepted that recycling materials like paper, glass, and plastics will help our environment and our health. However recycling plastics is far more bad than good to both our health and the environment. Recycling plastics is harmful to the environment and human health and we must find a more responsible way to use plastics, recycle them, or do away with them. Recycling is reusing materials like paper, plastics, and glass, breaking them down and turning them into a new product. This way no materials get wasted and not as many resources are used up for new products. There are many ways to dispose of waste, in this case plastics; incineration, landfilling, biodegradation and recycling. Incineration is effective however creates negative environmental risks and health risks by releasing different harmful gases. Landfilling requires space and many chemicals and energy in plastics are lost in disposal routes. Biodegradable plastics may not degrade fast enough to avoid a build of plastics and to help the environment. Recycling plastics is time consuming and plastics must be sorted through by the types of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Essay on Benefits of Recycling Americans produce millions of tons of waste in our communities every day. On trash pick–up days, we push up carts to the curb and workers dump the substances into big trucks and tow it away. I still wonder if some even think where the trash is going and the negative impacts it has. Some people after finishing their meals throw uneaten food, drink cups, and napkins in the same garbage containers. Do they ever think that the more they continue with this habit, the landfills will end up filled? Or they will realize the consequences after these landfills are a few away from their houses. According to the report by Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] Americans produced 243 million tons ofwaste about 4.3 pounds of waste per person per day in ...show more content... In addition, recycling may result in potentially less pure raw materials for small amounts of unrelated materials can be accidentally mixed with plastics. However, there are many advantages of recycling as compared to the negative outcomes. Landfills are dangerous to the environment because all the decomposing material along with contaminated substances dumped can pollute water supplies and release toxic gases; therefore the best solution is to recycle what we can. We should recycle to reduce air and water pollution, to solve the scarcity of landfills, save energy, conserve natural resources, and for economic benefits. By recycling, we would be reducing the carbon dioxide which is a green house, a major contributor to global warming. When some products are manufactured, smoke is released in the air and this thickens the ozone layer. Some of the major fossil fuels used in most industries such as diesel, coal and gasoline emit harmful gases like methane, and sulfur dioxide to the environment. The processing of raw materials to usable products creates toxic materials. Therefore, by reducing the amount of fuel usage will be reducing unsafe pollutants in the world. Once the ozone layer is thick, more heat is trapped on earth; thus, causing floods, high temperatures, drought, and extinction of animals such as polar bears. Rainforests play a major role in maintaining the ecosystem, which humans Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Max Cohen Cohen, 1 Professor Seelie September 27, 2015 English 104 Essay 1: Recycling Recycling has been the environmental crusade to reducing the human footprint, with it's spotlight shining down on in recent years. It was the noblest of causes, recycling being a great idea for the environment and society; but it is being handled poorly. Its modern descendant has turned into a corporate scheme with recycling becoming a business, instead of being about the environment because marketers are using environmentalism as a excuse for overconsumption, recycling products are only being recycled for profit, and cities & big business use inflated numbers to attain media attention. Let's now take a look at the bread and butter of...show more content... Companies are using environmentalism as a straw man for overconsumption. Coming straight out of writer Amy Westervelt's article, "Can Recycling Be Bad for the Environment?", Westervelt clearly sees through this ploy of emotional appeal, stating "American consumers Cohen, 2 assuage any guilt they might feel about consuming mass quantities of unnecessary, disposable goods by dutifully tossing these items into their recycling bins and hauling them out to the curb each week". (Westervelt, Amy. "Can Recycling Be Bad for the Environment?" Forbes. Forbes Magazine, 25 Apr. 2012. Web. 5 Dec. 2015). So why is the reason that companies are starting to "Go Green"? Its clearly obvious that the change in America from an industrial country to a environmental country has taught big business how to market environmentalism in mass quantities of their product. The strategy of the consumption–environment mindset are increasing rapidly. If this trend of buying without thinking does not slow down, with problems like not shifting priority from consumption to being environmentally aware, things will certainly worsen. On the topic of green marketing, people often see that green marketing refers to the advertising of objects or products with environmental characteristics to them (Like the Nestle bottle, for example). Terms like "Environmentally Friendly", "Refillable", and "Recyclable", are some of the things people associate with green marketing. In reality Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. The Pros And Cons Of Recycling One of the biggest problems that the world struggles with is the way that humans handle waste, especially recyclable material, in the environment. Plastic bottles ride raves from one continent to another. Plastic bags float through the air and the streets like they are stereotypical tumbleweeds in an old western movie. Papers and cardboard boxes piled up on top of one another and thrown into the trash or travel through the air. Metal cans litter the gutters of the street. Due to the fact that Rhode Island is a meagerly sized state, people can simply blow these issues off as someone or some other state's problem. However, the citizens of Rhode Island are major stakeholders when it comes to the improper handling of both waste and recycling in the state. There is nothing that Rhode Islanders can do to completely solve the myriad of problems that plague the area. The Central Landfill in Johnston will always have too much waste and recyclable material in it, improper materials fill recycling receptacles, and a number of products can contaminate entire truckloads of recycling. But, there are ways where people can become active and seek change in places such as their houses or their neighborhood. What Is the Difference Between Recycling and Waste Recyclables are materials that are used, sorted, cleaned, and then processed into new materials for manufacturers. Plastics, metal cans and containers, and paper materials are the most common types of recyclable materials. Recycling is important to control greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy usage, lower water pollution, and save resources (PM's 1). The recycling is a simple three–step process. First, the Environmental Protection Agency states are the collection and processing of materials. Town trucks drive around neighborhoods and collect whatever citizens put in their recycling bins. Then, the trucks bring them to a recovery facility where the sorting, cleaning, processing, and selling of the products takes place. Next, the bought materials turn into newspapers, paper towels, plastic, cans, and glass containers. The process repeats until the materials cannot be reused alone so a multitude of people use them in roads and cars (United 1). It is important to note that Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Recycling is not , although there are beneficial to the environment There are some benefits to recycling there are more disadvantages than advantages. Recycling cost a lot of money and has no big advantages to our personal lives. When recycling you use up a lot of energy, but using up all of that energy, is it actually worth it? Would still recycle if you knew the consequences? When your compacting the trash plastics have to be put with the plastics if not the whole batch will be messed up. Since people are the ones separating the recyclables there is a high chance of a mess up. But if they don't mess up the batch it can be helpful to the enviroment. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
