Ap Biology Reflection
This course was easily relatable to my AP bio course I took my senior year of high school, and my biology lab that I took this fall semester my
freshman year. The lab and the lecture went hand in hand which helped me academically learn more. I noticed that by taking these two courses
together it helps me learn more and better understand the material that I need to study/ know. All my knowledge of this course I mainly learned my
senior year of high school through AP biology, although this course really emphasized my essential understanding of the course and went into more
depth of the criteria that I needed to better know. I have acquired new ways of seeing, being, and thinking of this course because of the way it's gone
about. By being in this

Evolutionary Biology:
Global Warming Negatively Affecting Ecosystem's and Organisms Within
Daret Mckay
Sydenham High School
By looking at the evolution of the Earth's climate, we can see that climate change is occurring but more specifically, global warming. Climate change is
occurring as a result of the green house affect, meaning that sunlight's energy and heat is being trapped within the Earth's atmosphere and furthermore
warms the surface of Earth (NASA, n.d.). Evolutionary biology is described to be genetic inheritance (or change) within a population from generation
to generation (Understanding Evolution, 2015). By examining the evolutionary biology of ecosystems and the organisms within it, we will see that

Climate change is altering the pattern of life on the planet, causing widespread species extinction, migration and behavior changes (Suzuki, n.d.).
For example, female caribou migrate in the spring to small pockets of vegetation where they feed and raise there calves, but for the last decade
spring has come so early that by the time the caribou reach the coastal plan, their principle of food plant has already gone to seed (Suzuki, n.d.).
This proves that the female caribou are going to have to change breeding time frames, as well as migration, which will have an overall affect on the
ecosystem. This also means that animals and plants will have to permanently migrate to find suitable habitats but some will not be able to move
fast enough to keep up with the pace of climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). In fact, by saying that it means that some species will have to move 10 times
faster than they did during the last ice age just to survive. Over 30% of land surfaces in Canada will require unrealistically high migration rates to
keep up with projected climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). Another example of this issue is with Collared Lemmings. They are an important prey for
snowy owls, which may lose as much as 60% of their habitat. Loss of tundra habitat could radically reduce the availability of vital breeding habitat for
millions of geese and shore birds (Suzuki, n.d.). In general ecosystems are being destroyed due to

Biology Reflection
This semester I enrolled Biology 101 course with Dr. Smith–Pearson. One of our assignments this semester was an outside of the classroom volunteer
project. For this project I was selected to participate in the Tri– Beta Breast Cancer Walk. As participants, we had to do several things to prepare for the
volunteer event including a learning session. During this session, we learned exactly what breast cancer is, the different types, and the main causes. I
further learned about breast cancer through a scientific aspect in my biology class. We learned that cancer is when cells are over actively reproduced,
which is caused by a mutation in the cell cycle and suppresses our bodies ability to function normally to stop this. Also, we learned about some of the
different subtypes of breast cancer like, HER2+ (ER–), Basal–Like (Triple Negative Breast Cancer), Normal–Like, Luminal A, and Luminal B. HER2+
(ER–) breast cancer is less common, but it is very aggressive. HER2 is a gene in our bodies that produces receptor proteins, which are responsible
for regulating the growth and repair of breast cells. When these HER2 receptor proteins are expressed too much, it causes excessive reproduction of
breast cells. It is thought that African Americans have a higher risk for this type. Basal–Like, or more commonly called, Triple Negative Breast Cancer
is very aggressive, usually the most aggressive. Basal–like means that the ways the cells look with this cancer resemble cells that line

Why I Chose Biology
Until I started high school, I had no idea what major I wanted to pursue in college. After all, there are so many options, and even though some people
know what they want to do from the time they are in elementary school, that was not my experience. Although I always had some ideas before entering
ninth grade, I was still waiting to find something I really loved. During my freshman year, I finally found that thing–– biology.
Before high school, I had never looked forward to a science class. The only reason I even took biology freshman year was because it seemed to be
the lesser of two evils, the other being earth science. As it turned out, that biology class became the most pivotal course I took during my four years of
high school, and was a major factor in my decision to choose biology as my major....show more content...
Because genetic research is so new and so many possibilities for using this new technology are still being uncovered, I could have the ability to do
major research in the area through my studies at Johns Hopkins. For example, although scientists know some of the uses of stemcells, they also know
that there are many more things they can be used for that have not been found yet. I am hoping that by majoring in biology, I will have an opportunity
to work in the field of genetics and do research that will save many

I am pursuing the major Bio Sciences: Human Biology Intent with the intentions of using this major to help increase my chances of going to medical
school. This major will also assist me in exploring my love for biology, thus why I am determined to go to medical school in order to learn about the
human body and diseases.
In ten years I see myself as a college graduate who is currently attending medical school. While I am enrolled in medical school I will be pursuing a
career as a pediatrician. To make this vision a reality I am pursuing a biology major. This major will give me the opportunity to learn more about what I
am passionate about and expand my views on biology.
I discovered my passion for biology during my time in elementary school.

Biology Reflection
As the bell rung for the end of first period, I gathered my things and began to walk to my second period class, Biology. Biology was always to me
the hardest subject I had ever dealt with because there was so much to learn, study, and truly understand. I walked through the door into the classroom
and I'll never forget the words I heard my teacher say that caught me so off–guard. "Get out your notes and study because you have a test today", he
said. As I heard him finish his sentence, my eyes widen and I quickly moved towards my seat and began to skim over my notes as fast as I could. I
had completely forgot that I had a test in biology.
While reading over my notes, I kept thinking to myself that I just knew I was going to fail this test. After a couple of minutes of studying, I heard
the teach yell "5 more minutes". I began to skim even faster over my notes. It felt like time was moving so fast because when I heard my teach yell
"times up", it seemed as if only 2 minutes had passed by. He passed out the answer sheet around the classroom and instructed us to fill out our student
ID numbers. I looked over the unfilled answer sheet and counted the amount of questions. There were 30 questions in total which frightened me even
more because I had to answer 30 questions on information that I barely studied. Then he handed out the test and I became extremely nervous because
not only did I barely study and there were 30 multiple choice questions, but the classroom was so cold that

Biology and Chemistry Education is now the order of the day. Many people aim at continuing their education after high school. After high school,
some students enter directly to college whiles others go to universities to read different course of their choice. Among these courses, some prefer to
read mathematics, literature, science, economics, and others. Every student has his / her own career path in life. Some aim at becoming Biologist
whiles others aim to be a Chemist. This is basically for students who have interest in the science field determines which areas they want to study. When
it comes to the issue of Chemistry and Biology which one to be chosen from, here lies the individual own preferences. Biology and Chemistry have
similarities in science, whereas they have their differences and their branches. Chemistry and Biology are related courses so those who are interested in
science–related programs as their career can go for it. The systematic study of all the matter that exists is science involves both observations and
experiments. There are different matters also exist in the universe. The study of a living organism is Biology. Biology is divided into various branches
such as Zoology, Botany, Taxonomy etc, whereas, Chemistry can be defined as the branch of science that deals with matter, its composition , reactions,
structures, and properties. Both Biology and Chemistry plays an

Synthetic Biology? Essay
Impacts on the Environmental Movement David Park, Expos 101, Prassack, 11/15/2011 The environmental movement, addressed in "Rewilding North
America" by Caroline Fraser, focuses on the negative outcomes of human activities in the environment. It is a movement that restores the environment
that humans have damaged. Scientists have addressed the idea, in "A life of its own" by Michael Specter, of using synthetic biology to mend
environmental issues. Synthetic biology combines the "elements of engineering, chemistry, computer science, and molecular biology...to assemble the
biological tools necessary to redesign the living world" (Specter 364). There are both positive and negative impacts of a synthetic world on the
environment movement....show more content...
However, synthetic biology would essentially compete against rewilding for funds, and hinder the environmental movement. One example of the
competition between the environmental movement is the option of using cores and corridors versus to previous established programs. Initially, the
promotion of cores and corridors was rejected by the organizations at first. Later on, rewilding advocates created a new group, "seeking to reshape the
environmental movement," and acquired money from Tompkins and Johns. The rewilding movement ultimately took money away from other
programs, and changed the concept of the environmental movement. Now another decision has to be made between rewilding and synthetic biology.
Because money is limited, organizations can only support a limited amount of movements. By funding synthetic biology, other environmental
movements will be halted, whether it is better or for worse. The environmental movement is important, but it does not take priority over synthetic
biology. On the issue of nature, the environmental movement and a synthetic world stand at different spectrums. Nature has constantly been molding
the earth, and ever since humans came, with their technology, the environment has started to deteriorate. The movement for nature focuses on the
negative impact of humans on to nature. Many of the movements that are in affect "recognized that wilderness cannot be preserved by sealing it

Relationships and Interactions in Biology Essay
Biology essay – Relationships and interactions
There are many different types of relationships and interactions between organisms. Every organism is in some way connected or associated with
another. Some organisms need to depend on other organisms to survive which shows how important some of these relationships or interactions can be
in biology. Interaction is a vital part of how many organisms develop over time.
Predation is a main example of a relationship between organisms. Predation involves predators and prey, such as a fox catching and eating a rabbit.
There are two other forms of predation called, parasitism and grazing. Parasitism is where the host organism is exploited and used for benefit by the
other organism called a...show more content...
Lichens are another example of mutualism. Lichens are formed by algae and fungi living together and they both help each other. Algae can
photosynthesise and make food, which is shared by the fungus. The fungus in turn shelters the algae from a harsh climate.
Commensalism is when one species can benefit from a relationship and not hurt the other. There are four different main types; chemical, inquilinism,
metabiosis and phoresy. Chemical commensalism is most often observed between bacteria. It involves the species of one bacteria feeding on the
chemicals produced or the waste products of the other bacteria. Inquilinism involves one species using the body of another organism as a platform or
living space while the host does not benefit or is harmed. Metabiosis occurs when one species unintentionally creates a home for another species
through one of its normal life activities. A phoresy takes place when one organism attaches to another organism specifically for the purpose of gaining
transportation. An example of commensalism (inquilinism) is barnacles and whales. Barnacles are non–moving and they rely on currents to bring them
food. Some barnacles attach themselves to whales in order to help them live. They can benefit as they are then transported over the ocean which
exposes them to more feeding oppurtunities. The whale neither benefits or is harmed by the barnacles.
Competition is a huge

Biology : A Career In The Career Of Biology
The career I have chosen to research and write about is biology. The study of life ranges across multiple options of different sciences. One who wishes
to follow in a career involving science should consider being a type of biologist. This career will improve social skills and experience in the outside
world. Biology is a great career to some into contact with people, animals, and new discoveries. This essay will highlight key aspects of the career I
have chosen.
The duties of a biologist require multiple sets of different skills. Most biologists have to process any analyzed data and present the research. Another
set of required skills are managing lab technicians and programing computers (Chron.com). Specific types of biologists will need to learn certain
skills to even participate in that field of study. Different types of biologists include wildlife, aquatic, and plant biologists. Each field has different
circumstances of life to study or take care of. The second branch of biology is botany and that specializes in biophysics and genetics (Career Discovery
Encyclopedia, Page 106).
The word biology comes from the prefix bios, meaning life, and logos (word or discourse). The study and practice of biology was first recognized by
Greek philosophers. The first significant contribution to biology was by a man named Alcmaeon. His work would have been published at some point
between 500 and 450 BCE. Alcmaeon was the first to identify the difference between understanding and

Biology Is The Science Of Life
Biology
Tania Espinoza–Flores
Abstract
Biology is the study of life. Biology talks about organisms and how they react to certain toxins, when you mix things up. There are nine fields in
biology. Some examples of the fields are evolutionary biology, cellular biology, and molecularbiology. Biology has a long history. Biology is beneficial
in many ways. Biology has impacted people in negative and positive ways. People who study biology are called biologists.
Biology, the Science of Life Biology has a long history. Early humans would study biology. They had to study the animals that they hunted, and they
had to know where to find the plants that they gathered for food. Biology is the study of life. Biology comes from Greek words. There are nine fields
in biology. Some of the nine...show more content...
It is the organisms that work to create new things. An organism is an individual animal, plant, or single–celled life form. All organisms come together
and create something new. The organisms take energy from the environment, and from the food they eat. The new organisms that the old ones created
will soon make new organisms. This forms a cycle. The cycle never ends until something bad happens to the organisms. An easy way of saying all of
this is by saying that the cycle continues until something bad happens to the organisms. Biologists are the important scientists of biology. Biologists
study the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living organisms. Biologists study living organisms. For example, they study
humans, plants, animals, and many other living organisms. When they study these organisms, they find out many things about life and they study the
medicine that we use, so they can know what types of ways we will react to the medicine. People from long ago, would use biology to study the
animals that they hunted, and the plants they ate. Indeed, biologists are very important to

Biology Final Paper : Biology
Biochemistry final paper
I think that one thing that attracted me to biochemistry was how essential it is to the growth and prosperity of human life. I chose to go into the field
of biochemistry to further my education regarding medicine. Pharmacy is something that I have been interested in since I was a little girl, I knew that
whatever career path I went into I wanted to help people. My dad encouraged me to attend a camp during the summer where I met with engineers,
pharmacists and other doctors; and ever since then pharmacy has stuck with me. When I was about 10 my grandfather was diagnosed with lung
cancer. At the time, he was diagnosed, he had stage 4 lung cancer leaving him with no other options other than radiation and medicines to try and
slow the spread of the cancer and limit the pain he had been experiencing. I was with him a majority of the time he was sick and saw the way
different types of medicines affected him. I knew that there had to be some way that this awful disease could be stopped and the suffering it brings to
the patients and their families can be ended, that someone will discover a cure to treat and prevent this deadly disease that also happens to be the
leading cause of death among the cancer groups. I decided from then on that I wanted to do something to make a difference in people's lives and try to
prevent people from experiencing what my grandfather had to endure.
When learning about Biology in high school I really enjoyed the subject and

Examples Of My Favourite Subject In Biology
Short essay Growing up in a middle class family with my grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's isn't the memory I love to keep from my childhood.
With the childhood curiosity in me, I think that is when I stated to love science. I have always wondered why my grandmother was suffering, and how
can I help her. Back then, I did not really understood how genetics have to do with the disease, but I was convinced that science has the answer. It
broke my heart to think how hopeless I was back then. And I remember, one of the most frequently asked questions when I was I little child was
"What do you want to be when you grow up?". "Scientist" has always been my answer every time the question was asked. I remember when I have to

discover and develop technologies to regulate biological processes and treat various diseases. And maybe, there's hope for Alzheimers's too.
Although it is too late for me to help my late grandmother who passed away last year, my curiosity still goes on. Throughout the year, biologists
hailed plenty of breakthroughs in Alzheimer's research and neurological diseases. I want to be a part of that. However, I still have a long journey to

Molecular Biology Reflection
Daina Baker
In my first semester in university, when I took my first lab course, I knew that research and working and a lab was something I would be
interested. Despite how simple the chemistry experiments were in that class, I was drawn to the being and a lab and working therein. There was
satisfaction in being able to find answers to questions about the world and to investigate the world itself through careful experimentation and
observation. Again, despite being a simple lab class, I began to look forward and after several semesters of various labs ranging from chemistry to
biology I was convinced that I wanted to be a researcher, but I was not sure in what field exactly. At least that was the case until I took my first
molecular biology course. There, I was fascinated by the pathways that ran and maintained life, of how the tiny molecular machines that ran 'simple'
organisms are also found in more 'complex' ones.
This fascination of mine was not short lived and after several more classes of chemistry and molecular biology, I found myself drawn more to the area
of metabolism and biochemistry. I was captured again by how the myriad pathways interacted, only this time the pathways became more involved.
From the greater detail, it was clear that these pathways could be and that are manipulated by the medical community to help the sick. It became
interesting then to see how the pathways nature has so meticulously built over time could be affected: I took a liking to medicine,

Your Name: Alyssa Melincoff
Purpose of this Lab
What is the goal of this lab? What question is it trying to answer, or what problem is it trying to explain?
To find out how table salt affects the boiling temperature of water.
Hypothesis
After reading the lab instructions – but before starting the lab – record your best "educated guess" about what will happen in the experiment. What
hypothesis can you generate about the effect of adding salt to water?
Adding table salt to boiling water will cause the water to boil at a higher temperature

Boiling Point Temperature
(В°C)
Analysis
Analyze the data you collected in the lab. How does the data presented above relate to the hypotheses you generated earlier in lab? Are any hypotheses
disproved by your experiment? Use your graph to determine the boiling point of a solution made with 2 ВЅ tablespoons. This use of a graph has
generated a hypothesis that a 2 ВЅ tablespoon solution boils at __219__degrees F. Prepare a 2.5 M solution and verify your hypothesis.Correct!
Is the hypothesis correct? Yes. Adding table salt to water causes the water to boil at a higher temperature.
Problems with doing the experiments. The temperature readings were hard to make. Gloves had to be worn to keep my hands from getting too hot.
Had to be careful that the stove heat was not hitting the thermometer.
Other things learned. Be careful when adding salt to boiling water. It makes the water boil vigorously for a second or two.
Conclusion After conducting the experiment, how would you now explain the problem(s) or answer the question(s) raised when you described the
purpose of the lab? Be sure to base your answer on the data you collected. If you are given a

Biology Major Essay
My listed major at George Mason University is Government and International Relations. Prior to being an humanities major, I was a biology major.
After switching over to my current major, I continued taking courses in the natural sciences, courses specifically fulfilling the prerequisite courses for
admission into Dental School. I do truly enjoy my current major, but I believe it would be more fitting for this paper to be written from a biology
standpoint. This excerpt will touch on the study of biology, and science subfields and their use in career paths such as Dentistry.
In accordance with Oxfords English Dictionary definition, biology is defined as "The study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields
that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution." (Oxford, 1) More specifically to the major itself, according to
George Mason's Biology Department Program Goals and Student Learning Outcomes, the curriculum aims to satisfy the following four program goals:

of comparison and experience, a government and international politics major could not succeed within their field nor career goals without a basic
government 101 courses or an introduction to international relations course. Each subfield within biology focuses on mastering the four program goals
in respect to their concentration, but not before mastery of the prerequisite courses that enable them to do

Ap Biology Reflection

  • 1. Ap Biology Reflection This course was easily relatable to my AP bio course I took my senior year of high school, and my biology lab that I took this fall semester my freshman year. The lab and the lecture went hand in hand which helped me academically learn more. I noticed that by taking these two courses together it helps me learn more and better understand the material that I need to study/ know. All my knowledge of this course I mainly learned my senior year of high school through AP biology, although this course really emphasized my essential understanding of the course and went into more depth of the criteria that I needed to better know. I have acquired new ways of seeing, being, and thinking of this course because of the way it's gone about. By being in this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Evolutionary Biology Essay Evolutionary Biology: Global Warming Negatively Affecting Ecosystem's and Organisms Within Daret Mckay Sydenham High School By looking at the evolution of the Earth's climate, we can see that climate change is occurring but more specifically, global warming. Climate change is occurring as a result of the green house affect, meaning that sunlight's energy and heat is being trapped within the Earth's atmosphere and furthermore warms the surface of Earth (NASA, n.d.). Evolutionary biology is described to be genetic inheritance (or change) within a population from generation to generation (Understanding Evolution, 2015). By examining the evolutionary biology of ecosystems and the organisms within it, we will see that global...show more content... Climate change is altering the pattern of life on the planet, causing widespread species extinction, migration and behavior changes (Suzuki, n.d.). For example, female caribou migrate in the spring to small pockets of vegetation where they feed and raise there calves, but for the last decade spring has come so early that by the time the caribou reach the coastal plan, their principle of food plant has already gone to seed (Suzuki, n.d.). This proves that the female caribou are going to have to change breeding time frames, as well as migration, which will have an overall affect on the ecosystem. This also means that animals and plants will have to permanently migrate to find suitable habitats but some will not be able to move fast enough to keep up with the pace of climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). In fact, by saying that it means that some species will have to move 10 times faster than they did during the last ice age just to survive. Over 30% of land surfaces in Canada will require unrealistically high migration rates to keep up with projected climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). Another example of this issue is with Collared Lemmings. They are an important prey for snowy owls, which may lose as much as 60% of their habitat. Loss of tundra habitat could radically reduce the availability of vital breeding habitat for millions of geese and shore birds (Suzuki, n.d.). In general ecosystems are being destroyed due to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Biology Reflection This semester I enrolled Biology 101 course with Dr. Smith–Pearson. One of our assignments this semester was an outside of the classroom volunteer project. For this project I was selected to participate in the Tri– Beta Breast Cancer Walk. As participants, we had to do several things to prepare for the volunteer event including a learning session. During this session, we learned exactly what breast cancer is, the different types, and the main causes. I further learned about breast cancer through a scientific aspect in my biology class. We learned that cancer is when cells are over actively reproduced, which is caused by a mutation in the cell cycle and suppresses our bodies ability to function normally to stop this. Also, we learned about some of the different subtypes of breast cancer like, HER2+ (ER–), Basal–Like (Triple Negative Breast Cancer), Normal–Like, Luminal A, and Luminal B. HER2+ (ER–) breast cancer is less common, but it is very aggressive. HER2 is a gene in our bodies that produces receptor proteins, which are responsible for regulating the growth and repair of breast cells. When these HER2 receptor proteins are expressed too much, it causes excessive reproduction of breast cells. It is thought that African Americans have a higher risk for this type. Basal–Like, or more commonly called, Triple Negative Breast Cancer is very aggressive, usually the most aggressive. Basal–like means that the ways the cells look with this cancer resemble cells that line Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Why I Chose Biology Until I started high school, I had no idea what major I wanted to pursue in college. After all, there are so many options, and even though some people know what they want to do from the time they are in elementary school, that was not my experience. Although I always had some ideas before entering ninth grade, I was still waiting to find something I really loved. During my freshman year, I finally found that thing–– biology. Before high school, I had never looked forward to a science class. The only reason I even took biology freshman year was because it seemed to be the lesser of two evils, the other being earth science. As it turned out, that biology class became the most pivotal course I took during my four years of high school, and was a major factor in my decision to choose biology as my major....show more content... Because genetic research is so new and so many possibilities for using this new technology are still being uncovered, I could have the ability to do major research in the area through my studies at Johns Hopkins. For example, although scientists know some of the uses of stemcells, they also know that there are many more things they can be used for that have not been found yet. I am hoping that by majoring in biology, I will have an opportunity to work in the field of genetics and do research that will save many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Biology Major Essay I am pursuing the major Bio Sciences: Human Biology Intent with the intentions of using this major to help increase my chances of going to medical school. This major will also assist me in exploring my love for biology, thus why I am determined to go to medical school in order to learn about the human body and diseases. In ten years I see myself as a college graduate who is currently attending medical school. While I am enrolled in medical school I will be pursuing a career as a pediatrician. To make this vision a reality I am pursuing a biology major. This major will give me the opportunity to learn more about what I am passionate about and expand my views on biology. I discovered my passion for biology during my time in elementary school. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Biology Reflection As the bell rung for the end of first period, I gathered my things and began to walk to my second period class, Biology. Biology was always to me the hardest subject I had ever dealt with because there was so much to learn, study, and truly understand. I walked through the door into the classroom and I'll never forget the words I heard my teacher say that caught me so off–guard. "Get out your notes and study because you have a test today", he said. As I heard him finish his sentence, my eyes widen and I quickly moved towards my seat and began to skim over my notes as fast as I could. I had completely forgot that I had a test in biology. While reading over my notes, I kept thinking to myself that I just knew I was going to fail this test. After a couple of minutes of studying, I heard the teach yell "5 more minutes". I began to skim even faster over my notes. It felt like time was moving so fast because when I heard my teach yell "times up", it seemed as if only 2 minutes had passed by. He passed out the answer sheet around the classroom and instructed us to fill out our student ID numbers. I looked over the unfilled answer sheet and counted the amount of questions. There were 30 questions in total which frightened me even more because I had to answer 30 questions on information that I barely studied. Then he handed out the test and I became extremely nervous because not only did I barely study and there were 30 multiple choice questions, but the classroom was so cold that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Biology Compare And Contrast Essay Felicia Anane English Composition 1 Compare and Contrast 09 October 2017 Biology and Chemistry Education is now the order of the day. Many people aim at continuing their education after high school. After high school, some students enter directly to college whiles others go to universities to read different course of their choice. Among these courses, some prefer to read mathematics, literature, science, economics, and others. Every student has his / her own career path in life. Some aim at becoming Biologist whiles others aim to be a Chemist. This is basically for students who have interest in the science field determines which areas they want to study. When it comes to the issue of Chemistry and Biology which one to be chosen from, here lies the individual own preferences. Biology and Chemistry have similarities in science, whereas they have their differences and their branches. Chemistry and Biology are related courses so those who are interested in science–related programs as their career can go for it. The systematic study of all the matter that exists is science involves both observations and experiments. There are different matters also exist in the universe. The study of a living organism is Biology. Biology is divided into various branches such as Zoology, Botany, Taxonomy etc, whereas, Chemistry can be defined as the branch of science that deals with matter, its composition , reactions, structures, and properties. • 8. Synthetic Biology? Essay Impacts on the Environmental Movement David Park, Expos 101, Prassack, 11/15/2011 The environmental movement, addressed in "Rewilding North America" by Caroline Fraser, focuses on the negative outcomes of human activities in the environment. It is a movement that restores the environment that humans have damaged. Scientists have addressed the idea, in "A life of its own" by Michael Specter, of using synthetic biology to mend environmental issues. Synthetic biology combines the "elements of engineering, chemistry, computer science, and molecular biology...to assemble the biological tools necessary to redesign the living world" (Specter 364). There are both positive and negative impacts of a synthetic world on the environment movement....show more content... However, synthetic biology would essentially compete against rewilding for funds, and hinder the environmental movement. One example of the competition between the environmental movement is the option of using cores and corridors versus to previous established programs. Initially, the promotion of cores and corridors was rejected by the organizations at first. Later on, rewilding advocates created a new group, "seeking to reshape the environmental movement," and acquired money from Tompkins and Johns. The rewilding movement ultimately took money away from other programs, and changed the concept of the environmental movement. Now another decision has to be made between rewilding and synthetic biology. Because money is limited, organizations can only support a limited amount of movements. By funding synthetic biology, other environmental movements will be halted, whether it is better or for worse. The environmental movement is important, but it does not take priority over synthetic biology. On the issue of nature, the environmental movement and a synthetic world stand at different spectrums. Nature has constantly been molding the earth, and ever since humans came, with their technology, the environment has started to deteriorate. The movement for nature focuses on the negative impact of humans on to nature. Many of the movements that are in affect "recognized that wilderness cannot be preserved by sealing it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Relationships and Interactions in Biology Essay Biology essay – Relationships and interactions There are many different types of relationships and interactions between organisms. Every organism is in some way connected or associated with another. Some organisms need to depend on other organisms to survive which shows how important some of these relationships or interactions can be in biology. Interaction is a vital part of how many organisms develop over time. Predation is a main example of a relationship between organisms. Predation involves predators and prey, such as a fox catching and eating a rabbit. There are two other forms of predation called, parasitism and grazing. Parasitism is where the host organism is exploited and used for benefit by the other organism called a...show more content... Lichens are another example of mutualism. Lichens are formed by algae and fungi living together and they both help each other. Algae can photosynthesise and make food, which is shared by the fungus. The fungus in turn shelters the algae from a harsh climate. Commensalism is when one species can benefit from a relationship and not hurt the other. There are four different main types; chemical, inquilinism, metabiosis and phoresy. Chemical commensalism is most often observed between bacteria. It involves the species of one bacteria feeding on the chemicals produced or the waste products of the other bacteria. Inquilinism involves one species using the body of another organism as a platform or living space while the host does not benefit or is harmed. Metabiosis occurs when one species unintentionally creates a home for another species through one of its normal life activities. A phoresy takes place when one organism attaches to another organism specifically for the purpose of gaining transportation. An example of commensalism (inquilinism) is barnacles and whales. Barnacles are non–moving and they rely on currents to bring them food. Some barnacles attach themselves to whales in order to help them live. They can benefit as they are then transported over the ocean which exposes them to more feeding oppurtunities. The whale neither benefits or is harmed by the barnacles. Competition is a huge Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Biology : A Career In The Career Of Biology The career I have chosen to research and write about is biology. The study of life ranges across multiple options of different sciences. One who wishes to follow in a career involving science should consider being a type of biologist. This career will improve social skills and experience in the outside world. Biology is a great career to some into contact with people, animals, and new discoveries. This essay will highlight key aspects of the career I have chosen. The duties of a biologist require multiple sets of different skills. Most biologists have to process any analyzed data and present the research. Another set of required skills are managing lab technicians and programing computers (Chron.com). Specific types of biologists will need to learn certain skills to even participate in that field of study. Different types of biologists include wildlife, aquatic, and plant biologists. Each field has different circumstances of life to study or take care of. The second branch of biology is botany and that specializes in biophysics and genetics (Career Discovery Encyclopedia, Page 106). The word biology comes from the prefix bios, meaning life, and logos (word or discourse). The study and practice of biology was first recognized by Greek philosophers. The first significant contribution to biology was by a man named Alcmaeon. His work would have been published at some point between 500 and 450 BCE. Alcmaeon was the first to identify the difference between understanding and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Biology Is The Science Of Life Biology Tania Espinoza–Flores Abstract Biology is the study of life. Biology talks about organisms and how they react to certain toxins, when you mix things up. There are nine fields in biology. Some examples of the fields are evolutionary biology, cellular biology, and molecularbiology. Biology has a long history. Biology is beneficial in many ways. Biology has impacted people in negative and positive ways. People who study biology are called biologists. Biology, the Science of Life Biology has a long history. Early humans would study biology. They had to study the animals that they hunted, and they had to know where to find the plants that they gathered for food. Biology is the study of life. Biology comes from Greek words. There are nine fields in biology. Some of the nine...show more content... It is the organisms that work to create new things. An organism is an individual animal, plant, or single–celled life form. All organisms come together and create something new. The organisms take energy from the environment, and from the food they eat. The new organisms that the old ones created will soon make new organisms. This forms a cycle. The cycle never ends until something bad happens to the organisms. An easy way of saying all of this is by saying that the cycle continues until something bad happens to the organisms. Biologists are the important scientists of biology. Biologists study the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living organisms. Biologists study living organisms. For example, they study humans, plants, animals, and many other living organisms. When they study these organisms, they find out many things about life and they study the medicine that we use, so they can know what types of ways we will react to the medicine. People from long ago, would use biology to study the animals that they hunted, and the plants they ate. Indeed, biologists are very important to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Biology Final Paper : Biology Biochemistry final paper I think that one thing that attracted me to biochemistry was how essential it is to the growth and prosperity of human life. I chose to go into the field of biochemistry to further my education regarding medicine. Pharmacy is something that I have been interested in since I was a little girl, I knew that whatever career path I went into I wanted to help people. My dad encouraged me to attend a camp during the summer where I met with engineers, pharmacists and other doctors; and ever since then pharmacy has stuck with me. When I was about 10 my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. At the time, he was diagnosed, he had stage 4 lung cancer leaving him with no other options other than radiation and medicines to try and slow the spread of the cancer and limit the pain he had been experiencing. I was with him a majority of the time he was sick and saw the way different types of medicines affected him. I knew that there had to be some way that this awful disease could be stopped and the suffering it brings to the patients and their families can be ended, that someone will discover a cure to treat and prevent this deadly disease that also happens to be the leading cause of death among the cancer groups. I decided from then on that I wanted to do something to make a difference in people's lives and try to prevent people from experiencing what my grandfather had to endure. • 14. Examples Of My Favourite Subject In Biology Short essay Growing up in a middle class family with my grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's isn't the memory I love to keep from my childhood. With the childhood curiosity in me, I think that is when I stated to love science. I have always wondered why my grandmother was suffering, and how can I help her. Back then, I did not really understood how genetics have to do with the disease, but I was convinced that science has the answer. It broke my heart to think how hopeless I was back then. And I remember, one of the most frequently asked questions when I was I little child was "What do you want to be when you grow up?". "Scientist" has always been my answer every time the question was asked. I remember when I have to explain to my classmates...show more content... I have obtained various skill sets while I was there. During the internship, I was trusted with small project in the neuroscience field where I have to design and optimise an experiment involving the detection of the expression of JAK2 and STAT3 in mice brain. This is where my current interest has started to grow bigger and stronger. The more I read into molecular medicine, the more I realise how important genetics regulation is in order to discover and develop technologies to regulate biological processes and treat various diseases. And maybe, there's hope for Alzheimers's too. Although it is too late for me to help my late grandmother who passed away last year, my curiosity still goes on. Throughout the year, biologists hailed plenty of breakthroughs in Alzheimer's research and neurological diseases. I want to be a part of that. However, I still have a long journey to go, and this is just the beginning. I could be considered for this scholarship, so that I dive deeper into the ocean of knowledge and learn as much as I could so that I can contribute to the advancement of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Molecular Biology Reflection Daina Baker In my first semester in university, when I took my first lab course, I knew that research and working and a lab was something I would be interested. Despite how simple the chemistry experiments were in that class, I was drawn to the being and a lab and working therein. There was satisfaction in being able to find answers to questions about the world and to investigate the world itself through careful experimentation and observation. Again, despite being a simple lab class, I began to look forward and after several semesters of various labs ranging from chemistry to biology I was convinced that I wanted to be a researcher, but I was not sure in what field exactly. At least that was the case until I took my first molecular biology course. There, I was fascinated by the pathways that ran and maintained life, of how the tiny molecular machines that ran 'simple' organisms are also found in more 'complex' ones. This fascination of mine was not short lived and after several more classes of chemistry and molecular biology, I found myself drawn more to the area of metabolism and biochemistry. I was captured again by how the myriad pathways interacted, only this time the pathways became more involved. From the greater detail, it was clear that these pathways could be and that are manipulated by the medical community to help the sick. It became interesting then to see how the pathways nature has so meticulously built over time could be affected: I took a liking to medicine, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 17. Biology Lab Essay Lab Report: Scientific Method Your Name: Alyssa Melincoff Purpose of this Lab What is the goal of this lab? What question is it trying to answer, or what problem is it trying to explain? To find out how table salt affects the boiling temperature of water. Hypothesis After reading the lab instructions – but before starting the lab – record your best "educated guess" about what will happen in the experiment. What hypothesis can you generate about the effect of adding salt to water? How does the data presented above relate to the hypotheses you generated earlier in lab? Are any hypotheses disproved by your experiment? Use your graph to determine the boiling point of a solution made with 2 ВЅ tablespoons. This use of a graph has generated a hypothesis that a 2 ВЅ tablespoon solution boils at __219__degrees F. Conclusion After conducting the experiment, how would you now explain the problem(s) or answer the question(s) raised when you described the purpose of the lab? Be sure to base your answer on the data you collected. If you are given a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 20. Biology Major Essay My listed major at George Mason University is Government and International Relations. Prior to being an humanities major, I was a biology major. After switching over to my current major, I continued taking courses in the natural sciences, courses specifically fulfilling the prerequisite courses for admission into Dental School. I do truly enjoy my current major, but I believe it would be more fitting for this paper to be written from a biology standpoint. This excerpt will touch on the study of biology, and science subfields and their use in career paths such as Dentistry. In accordance with Oxfords English Dictionary definition, biology is defined as "The study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution." (Oxford, 1) More specifically to the major itself, according to George Mason's Biology Department Program Goals and Student Learning Outcomes, the curriculum aims to satisfy the following four program goals: "Knowledge of biology, Knowledge of field and laboratory...show more content... Similar to other academic fields, each specialty and subfield requires students to fulfill the basic prerequisite courses, such as chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics. Even if a student is not a chemistry or physics major, these courses are germane for true progression within the field. As a basis of comparison and experience, a government and international politics major could not succeed within their field nor career goals without a basic government 101 courses or an introduction to international relations course.
