Reflective Essay on College Writing
Reflective Essay on College Writing
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the
expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually
demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high
school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints
are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I...show more content...
I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all until the class sat down and analyzed the many
levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My
favorite section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the most because of my respect for music. I
think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on
many levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I
adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world
from that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place.
The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I began to like the stories and poems we read in class
more and more as we discussed them and looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very useful. For the
Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and
find numerous

My College Experience : My First Year Of College
My first college experience was at 18 years old, a young 18 I turned 18 in May and moved out of state to attend a small private college in Indiana in
August that same year. Went I graduated college I thought I was prepared and had all the tools I would need to succeed in college. In high school I
did everything (or so I though) I took advanced placement classes, I had a after school job, I was dedicated and serious about my classroom. My first
week of classes, I felt great, I thought I've got this no problem. Boy was I wrong. I began to struggle just a few week into classes and continued to
struggle consistently throughout the year. Not just academically, but emotionally too. I was away from home for the first time, I moved to a new state
and new city not knowing anyone for having the support I needed. After my barely scraping by my first year of college, I decided to move home and go
to Ohio State. Thing did not really improve academically for me there and after 2 semesters I dropped out. At this point I was married and living on
our own, I needed to work. I put my college education on hold for 11 years. During this time, I got a job as a receptionist in an office and worked there
for 4 years until I was laid off. I few weeks later, I receive another receptionist job which lead to my career in Project Management. I worked as a
project manager for 5 years, but still aspired to go back to college. However, having 3 kids, a husband, dog, house, and a laundry list of other

Problems With the ACT and SAT Essay
Throughout high school and college we will go through a vast amount of testing but why? Testing is used to show a person's amount of knowledge
on a particular subject. Usually it's for one specific subject and not a majority of them, the standardized tests include all testable subjects as in
English, math, science, writing, and reading. However, before we can all begin our college careers we have to take one of two tests, the ACT or the
SAT. These two tests determine the college you get into, the amount of scholarships you will receive, and even whether or not your will be accepted
into any college. These standardized tests are used by schools because they find that it is an easy way to test a student's ability. However, the...show

With college admissions relying so highly on these tests many bright and capable students are getting left with little options (Sternberg 7). These
students are facing this because the ACT and SAT primary focus on a narrow segment of skills that are needed to become a person that makes
significant differences to the world (Sternberg 7). College's argue that the admission test give them a quick glimpse of what the students potential is
because they do not have to time to individually evaluate each potential student. This may be true but we need a better way to distinguish a person's
abilities than just a simple score on a test. Creativity drives today's world, with new technology arriving daily and science conducting itself further.
We need creative and imaginative people in today's atmosphere to bring the world to the next step forward. "Standardized college admissions tests
assess only analytical skills, as well as the knowledge base on which they act, and completely ignore creative and practical skills (Sternberg 7)".
Without creative people in this world, where do you think we would be? Not very far. We need practical skills to go throughout everyday life. The
standardized tests don't test for that knowledge base, they test how much short term memory a

College: Is It Worth It? Essay
We are told to "go to college" by family, media, and teachers, but we are never given an explanation on why it's important for us to get a higher
education. The importance of higher education is so we can obtain a career that can support our needs and wants. It's also important because it gives
you an advantage when trying to get a job. Employers require a higher form of education, which is necessary for our society to advance. There aren't
many jobs that accept people with a high school diploma as their highest form of education. Employers want people that know what they're doing, and
so does our society. In order for people to go into the career field they want, they need to go to college to learn everything that comes with that career.

What we get out of the college experience, we use in our day to day lives. Even the things we think aren't important or useful end up becoming
helpful. The material we learn in college is fundamental when it comes jobs and life in general. We are taught to make choices. We are taught
how the real world works, and how to turn our education into our way of life. "...the really significant education in thinking that we're supposed to
get in a place like this isn't really about the capacity to think, but rather about the choice of what to think about." (Wallace 199). Not only do we get
a lot out of getting a college degree in what we want to do, but so does our society. There are requirements for every job for a reason. Jobs need
people that specialize in just that career field. They want us to be passionate about what we do and more importantly know exactly what we are
doing. For example, hospitals have no room for mistakes because not only may it cost a life, it can also costs them money. We feel safer knowing
people know how to do their jobs right. College education is necessary whenever there is a shortage in certain careers. It's important to have higher
education so there can be growth and competition in our society. It takes money to make money. It does cost a lot to pay for college, but in the end
it's worth it. By the end of the college process, we can have a college degree and could be getting

I received a harsh truth: poverty is inevitable
Growing up, I never had the warm pleasures of bedtime stories; instead, I would hear about the unimaginable impoverishment my parents faced in their
childhood. The immediate reality of poverty obscured their investment in their brighter futures; both were forced both to sell lottery tickets on the
streets or trade vegetables for portions of meat: just to help sustain their families. Looking back at those nights, I can only be grateful. As one of the
first in my family to attend college, I am piloting a new future, one where I hope to lift not only my family out of their struggles but also the community
that has always supported me and global communities today.
My life is propelled from my education. While the daily facades of school walls try their best to dilute the distractions of reality, in my community, I
see families sorting through clothing donation boxes and teenagers hanging around gas stations instead of school. Along with the wastes I see
accumulate on the street sides, I see a more disturbing waste: the opportunities begotten from poverty that perpetuates my community's hardships.
From my years of leading my school as a member of Student Government Association (SGA), I have been involved in tackling issues related...show

Pros And Cons Of College Essay
As pounded in our heads by teachers and adults, after high school the best idea is to go to college. This may not be the case for everyone. There are
many pros and cons for college. College is not for everyone, and I believe students should have the freedom to choose the path they take. For people
who desire to acquire a well paying job, a degree may be required. Most data points that the fastest growing job categories require at least a college
degree. Getting a degree can be as simple as going for 2 years or even 6. Getting a college degree will draw employers attention and gain respect. Some
people who have a degree may get paid more at their job than others who do not. Expanding your knowledge is important as there is always more to
learn. In my opinion, college is the best idea for any age student.
When planning your future, you can decide between a two–year community college or a four–year university. You can base your decision depending on
your career field or job you want to pursue. Some jobs may not even require a degree, in which college is unnecessary. Some jobs may only require an
associate's degree, so why waste your money at a university. Some may say that the experience at a four–year university is critical to growing up. Mr.
Perlstein states, "the college experience– a rite of passage as it was meant to be– must have come to an end." Rick Perlstein believes that the four–year
experience is meaningful. At a four–year, you may experience more diversity, and

500 Word Exit Essay For College Students
The next step of our lives
You're in your last year of college about to graduate, but first, the administration tells you that a 500–word exit essay is required. They want to see how
you justify and articulate your preparation for a post–graduate world and to demonstrate final evidence of your written communication skills, but who
seriously has time for that? I personally feel like it doesn't make sense for graduates to write an exit essay on top of buying caps and gowns, preparing
for their future, and also dealing with other problems.
Even though it's just a simple task , some college students try their hardest to avoid those types of things, especially during graduation week. During
graduation week, students are looking forward the time

College Is Not Worth It Essay
Many think college is not worth it, however when I think of college not being worth it, I ask myself what is "it"? Is college not worth the sacrifice,
time, or stress? In this case, many are not college material, simply for lacking the amount of effort and self motivation it takes to get through
college. I oppose with the statement "For many, College isn't worth it" because college is worth everything it takes for you to become great in the
field you choose to study. Many people are not able or do not have the mindset to get through college, but that do not mean they will never have the
mindset. Most people do not work hard under pressure or have great skills at testing or learning at a slow or fast pace. Some people believe that
after highschool, since it is required, that going straight into an occupation is better for them. In my opinion, college is a stepping stool for
achieving higher education and newer knowledge for the area you decide to infiltrate. I believe the educational world is bias to the brainpower of
many people and people of the world is bias to the things they are capable of doing. Therefore, I am confident in stating college is worth it because
having a college background ensures you quicker job opportunities, college gives you knowledge to become disciplined and self–motivated, and;
college also enhances your communication skills. I am convinced that having a college background ensures that you are more likely to be hired at a
job, then any person with a

Cultural Diversity In Colleges
Every college student has a different view on cultural diversity. No matter if they are from the inner city, rural areas, or even a different country, each
student values ethnicity differently. In college, students experience a lot of diversity. I believe that it is very important to teach students to appreciate
where people come from and their lifestyles. They don't have to agree with that person's values, but they should learn to appreciate and respect them for
their differences. At my university, I want to provide an opportunity for students, especially those who did not grow up in a diverse city, to expand
their horizons and make friendships with people they would never felt comfortable talking to. This life–altering opportunity will be

College Essay : An Ideal College
An Essay on An Ideal College
Everyone has or should have an ideal; something which he can look forward to, of which he may dream, and for which he may strive. In our
colleges we come across many defects or limitations. We often discuss these among ourselves. And in course of these discussions, and as a result of
them, we come to cherish a vague notion of what would be an ideal college, at last, what we would regard as an ideal. Here of course I speak mostly for
myself.
An ideal college, in my opinion, should consist of a building with well–lighted and spacious rooms, an extensive playground, well–equipped libraries
and laboratories, and learned teachers. These are essential, and so I will discuss these first.
On the academic side an ideal college should have two kinds of rooms: lecture–rooms and tutorial rooms. Lecture–rooms should be large enough to
accommodate even two to three hundred students without crowding. In these days of amplifiers, large classes should offer no real difficulty. Only
three must be plenty of light and air to prevent stuffiness. The acoustic arrangements must be such as to put no undue strain on a lecturer's voice.
Tutorial rooms should be spacious enough to accommodate small classes of ten or fifteen students. Too many lectures are apt to become monotonous
and boring. It would be deal if the ground covered by a lecture broadly is once again reviewed in the tutorial classes in greater detail and with an eye
to individual difficulties of students.

My Experience In A College Class
"Welcome Class to Composition one." Those words were voiced by my professor, Mrs. Robinson, on the first day of school. Initially, I thought to
myself, do I even belong in this college course class. Before school had even begun, the stress over the summer about my English skills was eating
me alive. Why? Well, in my past English classes I received A's on all of my essays, but this college class did not seem so easy. Also, I was always
fascinated by all the arts and sciences, but English never struck interest in me. I never thought that I could write any decent essays. The reason I
insecure about my writing skills was because of the ACT. Since the ACT is the talk about how smart an individual is, my ACT score was not very high.
As the course continued, the first essay approached quickly. I remember being stressed about this essay because of my writing insecurities. Although
I managed to acquire a decent grade, I promised myself to strive to make myself a better writer. I started to read Norton Field Guide to Writing
handbook also known as the yellow book, and slowly but surely started to develop knowledge of good writing skills and tips to improve my essays.
This allowed me to grow as a writer and slowly my insecurities started to dwindle, and I began to gain confidence in myself. I never would've thought
that the next time I took the ACT that my English score would be my highest. When getting my score back and realizing that I had improved so much,
I began to wonder how I

College Readiness Essay
Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university.
The last thing that colleges want is for students to qualify for admission and drop out, this affects drop out rate and graduation rate. According Robin
Chait and Andrea Venezia (2009), to about 83 percent ofhigh school graduates enroll in some form of postsecondary education, but only about 52
percent of students complete their degrees. Further, a very small proportion of students complete a degree in four years–"among students starting at
'four–year' institutions, only 34 percent finish a B.A. in four years, 64 percent within six years, and 69 percent within eight and a half years."...show

According to David Conley, readiness for college contains four key principles: key cognitive strategies, key content knowledge, key self management
skills, key knowledge about post and secondary education. Although college readiness can be measured sing ACT andSATscores, which developed a
college readiness benchmarks to see whether a prospective college student has a high prospect of success in college courses of English, social
sciences, Algebra and biology. However, if your test scores are not meeting the typical benchmarked standard does that truly determine I you are
ready for college. No. One thing we have to take under deep consideration is that each student is different and some don't test very well. What
happens to a child who has a really good GPA, high determination and a low test score? College recruits deem that these children are not college
ready. College readiness should be measured with a more natural eye, because some students may not be good in particular subject areas, however,
what would be the likeness of high school students completing and earning a degree in a field that they enjoy. The nature of humans is to do things that
they enjoy, to read stories that they can relate too, to complete a task that means a lot to them. This is the natural eye that we should look at college
readiness with. How determined and passionate are the students on furthering their education. How

Aptitude For Colleges And Sats Essay
Should SATs and ACTs Determine Our Aptitude for College? Have you ever wondered why, throughout the course of your educational career, you
have to take so many standardized tests and why they determine how smart you are or if you will make it in life? For most people the SATs and the
ACTs are the most important and stressful tests that they will ever take. For most colleges these scores determine whether or not you get into their
college or whether you are even considered for a spot at a college or university. Here are some facts regarding the SATs and the ACTs. According to

Jill Tiefenthaler, a professor of economics, says "It is time to rethink college admissions, and particularly the role of standardized testing. With only
marginal predictive value for performance in college, standardized scores do nothing to suggest what a student might contribute to the character and
vitality of an intellectual community" (usnews.com). In other words, SAT scores should not have a big impact on your admission because it does
not show what you can bring to the table besides your intelligence, or lack of intelligence. Another article says, "The SAT does not measure the skills
needed for college, and it certainly does not predict how well I am going to do in college classes. In fact, studies have shown that high school grades are
a better predictor of grades in college than an SAT score" (pennlive.com). This proves that SAT scores do not accurately measure your aptitude for
college, and should not be relied upon heavily by colleges. High school GPA should be more weighted than SAT scores because, many people put a
lot of effort into the SAT so they can have stronger scores, yet all throughout high school they have slacked off. GPA is the result of hundreds of tests;
the SAT scores are the result of one

Expectations And Expectations In College
Expectations and Goals As a new freshman, the next four years of my life can seem extremely daunting, with huge possibilities as to the kind of
person that I want to be when I graduate. College is known as a transformation period in the life of a young adult, and I hope to take full advantage
of this time. By setting expectations and goals for myself, hopefully I can be successful as I seek out the person that God wants me to be. I have
set up, and outlined, academic, spiritual, and personal goals to achieve my first semester here at college. For this semester, I have set a high
expectation for myself academically. Specifically, I would like to be able to maintain all A's, and therefore a 4.0 GPA. If I am able to do this, and
possibly continue it on through all eight semesters of my college career, I will be a more competitive applicant for PA school, or med school, or
whatever post undergraduate schooling that my future entails. Not only would achieving this goal be beneficial to my future career, I hope to
honor Christ by working hard in everything that I do, and this is one way that I can do that. This goal is measurable because I can regularly check
my grades to make sure that I am staying on track with each class to attain this goal. I believe that getting all A's is also achievable is I remained
focused and driven, delegating ahead of time the study time that I will need to be successful in each of my classes. For each hour that I spend in a
class, I will plan on spending at least three hours outside of class with the covered material to be successful. This can be realistic if I am careful to
make sure that I don't commit myself too heavily to extracurricular activities. While I will be checking my grades weekly, half–way through the
semester I will evaluate my study strategies, and whether they were successful or need to be changed to stay on target. Ultimately, I would like to
see myself meet this goal at the end of the semester and carry the habits that I have learned to the rest of my college career. Spiritually, I know that
this time is quintessential in the establishing of my faith and walk with Christ. My goal is to set habits and practices for myself that will help me grow
spiritually.

College Is Not A Commodity Essay
Receiving a degree from a Christian liberal arts college isn't only about how we will financially benefit from that degree, but how we develop as
people. Having a degree we can all agree will provide us with better career options. Focusing on not only our intended major but also on other
subjects will aid us in developing broader knowledge. Possessing that significant knowledge will make it simpler for us to adapt to change once out in
the workforce.
After reading the article "College is not a Commodity", it had me thinking about what my greater purpose in life is. I didn't hundred percent agree
with the article because there are aspects of college that I think are considered a commodity. In the end, we will walk away with a degree that we
invested money, time and effort into it. With that degree, we will be able to find better jobs and do well for ourselves. On the other hand, it's not only
about getting a better job but about developing into a better person. A college degree will aid me to be a positive impact on the world by teaching me
exceptional communication and problem–solving skills. One main component of our education that will develop us into more knowledgeable people is
our professors. There are days that I may not like the assignment that was given to me, but I know that without...show more content...
The fact is there isn't really anything wrong with that, but as students we should be earning a degree in something we love, and enjoy not
something that will make us a lot of money. A great teacher and philosopher once said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a
day in your life". This quote summarizes the point I was trying to make. As students we have the option to choose what kind of future is ahead of us.
I know that money plays a big role in our choice, but first and foremost it should be something that we will relish for the rest of our

Safety on College Campuses Essay examples
Safety is a tremendous issue on college campuses, and additional procedures need to be taken to prevent crimes from happening. When walking onto
a college campus as a young adult, people get a rush of the unknown. The unknown could be going to college parties and late night study groups.
College should be like any high school or elementary school and have better security measures to protect their students. The reasons we need these
extra steps are to prevent violence, give students a sense of security, and monitor visitors on campus.
First of all, violence can be prevented on campuses among the students once safety issues are put in place. There are several ways to prevent the
violence including security cameras and metal detectors....show more content...
In another incident at Western KentuckyUniversity, a young woman was raped, stabbed, and burned to death in her dorm. Everyone that entered the
building was supposed to sign in and show identification in this case the one involved walked in without being questioned, he proceeded to her room
where she was brutally murdered. When visitors are seen by security and made to sign in and show identification, it would help monitor the visitors in
each building. Therefore, guards stationed outside of dorms at night would prevent unauthorized visitors in the building and the guards could
personally identify who enters and leaves each building. Thirdly, visitors on a campus is not a bad thing, but they must be monitored for student safety.
There have been other crimes on campuses like purse snatching in the middle of the day, car break–ins, and shoplifting at the school stores. In addition,
the most up–to–date statistics show there were more than 35,000 reported crimes on U.S. college campuses in just one year. Furthermore, if a crime
occurs the person involved can be identified easier by checking the log book and talking to security. Having more than one safety measure in place
allows further evidence if something was to happen. The experience that occurs at college must reflect to younger generations that college is not a
scary place, and that it is a safe and secure place as if they were at

What Does A College Education Mean To Me Essay
I live in an impoverished town, with a 40% increase this year in opioid deaths, where the education system pumps under–educated teens onto the streets
they came from, with no chance of a job. Many parents and adults do not care, know, or understand the value of a college education.
This is my reality. Just as it does not define who I am or what I want to be, neither do my SAT scores.
We neither have nor can afford private SAT or ACT tutors. No one tells us to start preparing forcollege, even as seniors. My SAT training was me,
myself, and I studying between jobs and after homework, whenever and wherever I could find a quiet place. Consequently, I have SAT scores that do

I was out of place, a quiet girl whose clothing was obviously not fashionable, lucky if she had a bag lunch, and no reason to be confident. I was picked
on relentlessly by others who recognized an easy target. My chaotic home life was never conducive to good grades, or school for that matter. No one I
knew was a role model and no one volunteered to step up to be one. With no social life and a toxic home life, my grades plummeted before they had a
chance to climb.
As the freshman year concluded, I saw the writing on the wall. I started making the seismic shift that put me on my path to success to become a top
college graduate. Summer residents helped me gain confidence in who I was and take control of my life. While others still bully me every day it no
longer phases me, they became mere hot air whistlers in the wind of the halls.
I found places to go, things to do, and made an effort to speak with people who would value knowing me; it turned out there were a lot of them.
I realized I am strong and resilient, and nothing is going to stop me from obtaining my goal of living a successful, interesting, effective life of my own

Reflective Essay On College Writing

  • 1. Reflective Essay on College Writing Reflective Essay on College Writing This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I...show more content... I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place. The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My College Experience : My First Year Of College My first college experience was at 18 years old, a young 18 I turned 18 in May and moved out of state to attend a small private college in Indiana in August that same year. Went I graduated college I thought I was prepared and had all the tools I would need to succeed in college. In high school I did everything (or so I though) I took advanced placement classes, I had a after school job, I was dedicated and serious about my classroom. My first week of classes, I felt great, I thought I've got this no problem. Boy was I wrong. I began to struggle just a few week into classes and continued to struggle consistently throughout the year. Not just academically, but emotionally too. I was away from home for the first time, I moved to a new state and new city not knowing anyone for having the support I needed. After my barely scraping by my first year of college, I decided to move home and go to Ohio State. Thing did not really improve academically for me there and after 2 semesters I dropped out. At this point I was married and living on our own, I needed to work. I put my college education on hold for 11 years. During this time, I got a job as a receptionist in an office and worked there for 4 years until I was laid off. I few weeks later, I receive another receptionist job which lead to my career in Project Management. I worked as a project manager for 5 years, but still aspired to go back to college. However, having 3 kids, a husband, dog, house, and a laundry list of other Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Problems With the ACT and SAT Essay Throughout high school and college we will go through a vast amount of testing but why? Testing is used to show a person's amount of knowledge on a particular subject. Usually it's for one specific subject and not a majority of them, the standardized tests include all testable subjects as in English, math, science, writing, and reading. However, before we can all begin our college careers we have to take one of two tests, the ACT or the SAT. These two tests determine the college you get into, the amount of scholarships you will receive, and even whether or not your will be accepted into any college. These standardized tests are used by schools because they find that it is an easy way to test a student's ability. However, the...show more content... With college admissions relying so highly on these tests many bright and capable students are getting left with little options (Sternberg 7). These students are facing this because the ACT and SAT primary focus on a narrow segment of skills that are needed to become a person that makes significant differences to the world (Sternberg 7). College's argue that the admission test give them a quick glimpse of what the students potential is because they do not have to time to individually evaluate each potential student. This may be true but we need a better way to distinguish a person's abilities than just a simple score on a test. Creativity drives today's world, with new technology arriving daily and science conducting itself further. We need creative and imaginative people in today's atmosphere to bring the world to the next step forward. "Standardized college admissions tests assess only analytical skills, as well as the knowledge base on which they act, and completely ignore creative and practical skills (Sternberg 7)". Without creative people in this world, where do you think we would be? Not very far. We need practical skills to go throughout everyday life. The standardized tests don't test for that knowledge base, they test how much short term memory a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. College: Is It Worth It? Essay We are told to "go to college" by family, media, and teachers, but we are never given an explanation on why it's important for us to get a higher education. The importance of higher education is so we can obtain a career that can support our needs and wants. It's also important because it gives you an advantage when trying to get a job. Employers require a higher form of education, which is necessary for our society to advance. There aren't many jobs that accept people with a high school diploma as their highest form of education. Employers want people that know what they're doing, and so does our society. In order for people to go into the career field they want, they need to go to college to learn everything that comes with that career. ...show more content... What we get out of the college experience, we use in our day to day lives. Even the things we think aren't important or useful end up becoming helpful. The material we learn in college is fundamental when it comes jobs and life in general. We are taught to make choices. We are taught how the real world works, and how to turn our education into our way of life. "...the really significant education in thinking that we're supposed to get in a place like this isn't really about the capacity to think, but rather about the choice of what to think about." (Wallace 199). Not only do we get a lot out of getting a college degree in what we want to do, but so does our society. There are requirements for every job for a reason. Jobs need people that specialize in just that career field. They want us to be passionate about what we do and more importantly know exactly what we are doing. For example, hospitals have no room for mistakes because not only may it cost a life, it can also costs them money. We feel safer knowing people know how to do their jobs right. College education is necessary whenever there is a shortage in certain careers. It's important to have higher education so there can be growth and competition in our society. It takes money to make money. It does cost a lot to pay for college, but in the end it's worth it. By the end of the college process, we can have a college degree and could be getting Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. I received a harsh truth: poverty is inevitable Growing up, I never had the warm pleasures of bedtime stories; instead, I would hear about the unimaginable impoverishment my parents faced in their childhood. The immediate reality of poverty obscured their investment in their brighter futures; both were forced both to sell lottery tickets on the streets or trade vegetables for portions of meat: just to help sustain their families. Looking back at those nights, I can only be grateful. As one of the first in my family to attend college, I am piloting a new future, one where I hope to lift not only my family out of their struggles but also the community that has always supported me and global communities today. My life is propelled from my education. While the daily facades of school walls try their best to dilute the distractions of reality, in my community, I see families sorting through clothing donation boxes and teenagers hanging around gas stations instead of school. Along with the wastes I see accumulate on the street sides, I see a more disturbing waste: the opportunities begotten from poverty that perpetuates my community's hardships. From my years of leading my school as a member of Student Government Association (SGA), I have been involved in tackling issues related...show more content... As the vice president of my Health Occupations Students of America club at my school, I have worked hard to expand the focus of medial outreach for my community. While the club is mainly focused on competitive events, I realized there was a lack of exposure in the medical aspects. Because of this, my club had expanded its purpose by revisiting what it means to be a physician and connecting to the community as we did when I lead my club in hosting a day at our local Space Coast Fair to boost emotional support for the elderly from assisted living Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Pros And Cons Of College Essay As pounded in our heads by teachers and adults, after high school the best idea is to go to college. This may not be the case for everyone. There are many pros and cons for college. College is not for everyone, and I believe students should have the freedom to choose the path they take. For people who desire to acquire a well paying job, a degree may be required. Most data points that the fastest growing job categories require at least a college degree. Getting a degree can be as simple as going for 2 years or even 6. Getting a college degree will draw employers attention and gain respect. Some people who have a degree may get paid more at their job than others who do not. Expanding your knowledge is important as there is always more to learn. In my opinion, college is the best idea for any age student. When planning your future, you can decide between a two–year community college or a four–year university. You can base your decision depending on your career field or job you want to pursue. Some jobs may not even require a degree, in which college is unnecessary. Some jobs may only require an associate's degree, so why waste your money at a university. Some may say that the experience at a four–year university is critical to growing up. Mr. Perlstein states, "the college experience– a rite of passage as it was meant to be– must have come to an end." Rick Perlstein believes that the four–year experience is meaningful. At a four–year, you may experience more diversity, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. 500 Word Exit Essay For College Students The next step of our lives You're in your last year of college about to graduate, but first, the administration tells you that a 500–word exit essay is required. They want to see how you justify and articulate your preparation for a post–graduate world and to demonstrate final evidence of your written communication skills, but who seriously has time for that? I personally feel like it doesn't make sense for graduates to write an exit essay on top of buying caps and gowns, preparing for their future, and also dealing with other problems. Even though it's just a simple task , some college students try their hardest to avoid those types of things, especially during graduation week. During graduation week, students are looking forward the time Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. College Is Not Worth It Essay Many think college is not worth it, however when I think of college not being worth it, I ask myself what is "it"? Is college not worth the sacrifice, time, or stress? In this case, many are not college material, simply for lacking the amount of effort and self motivation it takes to get through college. I oppose with the statement "For many, College isn't worth it" because college is worth everything it takes for you to become great in the field you choose to study. Many people are not able or do not have the mindset to get through college, but that do not mean they will never have the mindset. Most people do not work hard under pressure or have great skills at testing or learning at a slow or fast pace. Some people believe that after highschool, since it is required, that going straight into an occupation is better for them. In my opinion, college is a stepping stool for achieving higher education and newer knowledge for the area you decide to infiltrate. I believe the educational world is bias to the brainpower of many people and people of the world is bias to the things they are capable of doing. Therefore, I am confident in stating college is worth it because having a college background ensures you quicker job opportunities, college gives you knowledge to become disciplined and self–motivated, and; college also enhances your communication skills. I am convinced that having a college background ensures that you are more likely to be hired at a job, then any person with a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Cultural Diversity In Colleges Every college student has a different view on cultural diversity. No matter if they are from the inner city, rural areas, or even a different country, each student values ethnicity differently. In college, students experience a lot of diversity. I believe that it is very important to teach students to appreciate where people come from and their lifestyles. They don't have to agree with that person's values, but they should learn to appreciate and respect them for their differences. At my university, I want to provide an opportunity for students, especially those who did not grow up in a diverse city, to expand their horizons and make friendships with people they would never felt comfortable talking to. This life–altering opportunity will be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. College Essay : An Ideal College An Essay on An Ideal College Everyone has or should have an ideal; something which he can look forward to, of which he may dream, and for which he may strive. In our colleges we come across many defects or limitations. We often discuss these among ourselves. And in course of these discussions, and as a result of them, we come to cherish a vague notion of what would be an ideal college, at last, what we would regard as an ideal. Here of course I speak mostly for myself. An ideal college, in my opinion, should consist of a building with well–lighted and spacious rooms, an extensive playground, well–equipped libraries and laboratories, and learned teachers. These are essential, and so I will discuss these first. On the academic side an ideal college should have two kinds of rooms: lecture–rooms and tutorial rooms. Lecture–rooms should be large enough to accommodate even two to three hundred students without crowding. In these days of amplifiers, large classes should offer no real difficulty. Only three must be plenty of light and air to prevent stuffiness. The acoustic arrangements must be such as to put no undue strain on a lecturer's voice. Tutorial rooms should be spacious enough to accommodate small classes of ten or fifteen students. Too many lectures are apt to become monotonous and boring. It would be deal if the ground covered by a lecture broadly is once again reviewed in the tutorial classes in greater detail and with an eye to individual difficulties of students. • 12. My Experience In A College Class "Welcome Class to Composition one." Those words were voiced by my professor, Mrs. Robinson, on the first day of school. Initially, I thought to myself, do I even belong in this college course class. Before school had even begun, the stress over the summer about my English skills was eating me alive. Why? Well, in my past English classes I received A's on all of my essays, but this college class did not seem so easy. Also, I was always fascinated by all the arts and sciences, but English never struck interest in me. I never thought that I could write any decent essays. The reason I insecure about my writing skills was because of the ACT. Since the ACT is the talk about how smart an individual is, my ACT score was not very high. As the course continued, the first essay approached quickly. I remember being stressed about this essay because of my writing insecurities. Although I managed to acquire a decent grade, I promised myself to strive to make myself a better writer. I started to read Norton Field Guide to Writing handbook also known as the yellow book, and slowly but surely started to develop knowledge of good writing skills and tips to improve my essays. This allowed me to grow as a writer and slowly my insecurities started to dwindle, and I began to gain confidence in myself. I never would've thought that the next time I took the ACT that my English score would be my highest. When getting my score back and realizing that I had improved so much, I began to wonder how I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. College Readiness Essay Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university. The last thing that colleges want is for students to qualify for admission and drop out, this affects drop out rate and graduation rate. According Robin Chait and Andrea Venezia (2009), to about 83 percent ofhigh school graduates enroll in some form of postsecondary education, but only about 52 percent of students complete their degrees. Further, a very small proportion of students complete a degree in four years–"among students starting at 'four–year' institutions, only 34 percent finish a B.A. in four years, 64 percent within six years, and 69 percent within eight and a half years."...show more content... According to David Conley, readiness for college contains four key principles: key cognitive strategies, key content knowledge, key self management skills, key knowledge about post and secondary education. Although college readiness can be measured sing ACT andSATscores, which developed a college readiness benchmarks to see whether a prospective college student has a high prospect of success in college courses of English, social sciences, Algebra and biology. However, if your test scores are not meeting the typical benchmarked standard does that truly determine I you are ready for college. No. One thing we have to take under deep consideration is that each student is different and some don't test very well. What happens to a child who has a really good GPA, high determination and a low test score? College recruits deem that these children are not college ready. College readiness should be measured with a more natural eye, because some students may not be good in particular subject areas, however, what would be the likeness of high school students completing and earning a degree in a field that they enjoy. The nature of humans is to do things that they enjoy, to read stories that they can relate too, to complete a task that means a lot to them. This is the natural eye that we should look at college readiness with. How determined and passionate are the students on furthering their education. How Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Aptitude For Colleges And Sats Essay Should SATs and ACTs Determine Our Aptitude for College? Have you ever wondered why, throughout the course of your educational career, you have to take so many standardized tests and why they determine how smart you are or if you will make it in life? For most people the SATs and the ACTs are the most important and stressful tests that they will ever take. For most colleges these scores determine whether or not you get into their college or whether you are even considered for a spot at a college or university. Here are some facts regarding the SATs and the ACTs. According to IvyBound.net, over the last 25 years, more and more competitive colleges have emphasized high test scores. Also, most competitive colleges, which are where most people...show more content... Jill Tiefenthaler, a professor of economics, says "It is time to rethink college admissions, and particularly the role of standardized testing. With only marginal predictive value for performance in college, standardized scores do nothing to suggest what a student might contribute to the character and vitality of an intellectual community" (usnews.com). In other words, SAT scores should not have a big impact on your admission because it does not show what you can bring to the table besides your intelligence, or lack of intelligence. Another article says, "The SAT does not measure the skills needed for college, and it certainly does not predict how well I am going to do in college classes. In fact, studies have shown that high school grades are a better predictor of grades in college than an SAT score" (pennlive.com). This proves that SAT scores do not accurately measure your aptitude for college, and should not be relied upon heavily by colleges. High school GPA should be more weighted than SAT scores because, many people put a lot of effort into the SAT so they can have stronger scores, yet all throughout high school they have slacked off. GPA is the result of hundreds of tests; the SAT scores are the result of one Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Expectations And Expectations In College Expectations and Goals As a new freshman, the next four years of my life can seem extremely daunting, with huge possibilities as to the kind of person that I want to be when I graduate. College is known as a transformation period in the life of a young adult, and I hope to take full advantage of this time. By setting expectations and goals for myself, hopefully I can be successful as I seek out the person that God wants me to be. I have set up, and outlined, academic, spiritual, and personal goals to achieve my first semester here at college. For this semester, I have set a high expectation for myself academically. Specifically, I would like to be able to maintain all A's, and therefore a 4.0 GPA. If I am able to do this, and possibly continue it on through all eight semesters of my college career, I will be a more competitive applicant for PA school, or med school, or whatever post undergraduate schooling that my future entails. Not only would achieving this goal be beneficial to my future career, I hope to honor Christ by working hard in everything that I do, and this is one way that I can do that. This goal is measurable because I can regularly check my grades to make sure that I am staying on track with each class to attain this goal. I believe that getting all A's is also achievable is I remained focused and driven, delegating ahead of time the study time that I will need to be successful in each of my classes. For each hour that I spend in a class, I will plan on spending at least three hours outside of class with the covered material to be successful. This can be realistic if I am careful to make sure that I don't commit myself too heavily to extracurricular activities. While I will be checking my grades weekly, half–way through the semester I will evaluate my study strategies, and whether they were successful or need to be changed to stay on target. Ultimately, I would like to see myself meet this goal at the end of the semester and carry the habits that I have learned to the rest of my college career. Spiritually, I know that this time is quintessential in the establishing of my faith and walk with Christ. My goal is to set habits and practices for myself that will help me grow spiritually. • 16. College Is Not A Commodity Essay Receiving a degree from a Christian liberal arts college isn't only about how we will financially benefit from that degree, but how we develop as people. Having a degree we can all agree will provide us with better career options. Focusing on not only our intended major but also on other subjects will aid us in developing broader knowledge. Possessing that significant knowledge will make it simpler for us to adapt to change once out in the workforce. After reading the article "College is not a Commodity", it had me thinking about what my greater purpose in life is. I didn't hundred percent agree with the article because there are aspects of college that I think are considered a commodity. In the end, we will walk away with a degree that we invested money, time and effort into it. With that degree, we will be able to find better jobs and do well for ourselves. On the other hand, it's not only about getting a better job but about developing into a better person. A college degree will aid me to be a positive impact on the world by teaching me exceptional communication and problem–solving skills. One main component of our education that will develop us into more knowledgeable people is our professors. There are days that I may not like the assignment that was given to me, but I know that without...show more content... The fact is there isn't really anything wrong with that, but as students we should be earning a degree in something we love, and enjoy not something that will make us a lot of money. A great teacher and philosopher once said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life". This quote summarizes the point I was trying to make. As students we have the option to choose what kind of future is ahead of us. I know that money plays a big role in our choice, but first and foremost it should be something that we will relish for the rest of our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Safety on College Campuses Essay examples Safety is a tremendous issue on college campuses, and additional procedures need to be taken to prevent crimes from happening. When walking onto a college campus as a young adult, people get a rush of the unknown. The unknown could be going to college parties and late night study groups. College should be like any high school or elementary school and have better security measures to protect their students. The reasons we need these extra steps are to prevent violence, give students a sense of security, and monitor visitors on campus. First of all, violence can be prevented on campuses among the students once safety issues are put in place. There are several ways to prevent the violence including security cameras and metal detectors....show more content... In another incident at Western KentuckyUniversity, a young woman was raped, stabbed, and burned to death in her dorm. Everyone that entered the building was supposed to sign in and show identification in this case the one involved walked in without being questioned, he proceeded to her room where she was brutally murdered. When visitors are seen by security and made to sign in and show identification, it would help monitor the visitors in each building. Therefore, guards stationed outside of dorms at night would prevent unauthorized visitors in the building and the guards could personally identify who enters and leaves each building. Thirdly, visitors on a campus is not a bad thing, but they must be monitored for student safety. There have been other crimes on campuses like purse snatching in the middle of the day, car break–ins, and shoplifting at the school stores. In addition, the most up–to–date statistics show there were more than 35,000 reported crimes on U.S. college campuses in just one year. Furthermore, if a crime occurs the person involved can be identified easier by checking the log book and talking to security. Having more than one safety measure in place allows further evidence if something was to happen. The experience that occurs at college must reflect to younger generations that college is not a scary place, and that it is a safe and secure place as if they were at Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 19. What Does A College Education Mean To Me Essay I live in an impoverished town, with a 40% increase this year in opioid deaths, where the education system pumps under–educated teens onto the streets they came from, with no chance of a job. Many parents and adults do not care, know, or understand the value of a college education. This is my reality. Just as it does not define who I am or what I want to be, neither do my SAT scores. We neither have nor can afford private SAT or ACT tutors. No one tells us to start preparing forcollege, even as seniors. My SAT training was me, myself, and I studying between jobs and after homework, whenever and wherever I could find a quiet place. Consequently, I have SAT scores that do not reflect all I know. There is no word for how frustrating this is, least of all unfair....show more content... I was out of place, a quiet girl whose clothing was obviously not fashionable, lucky if she had a bag lunch, and no reason to be confident. I was picked on relentlessly by others who recognized an easy target. My chaotic home life was never conducive to good grades, or school for that matter. No one I knew was a role model and no one volunteered to step up to be one. With no social life and a toxic home life, my grades plummeted before they had a chance to climb. As the freshman year concluded, I saw the writing on the wall. I started making the seismic shift that put me on my path to success to become a top college graduate. Summer residents helped me gain confidence in who I was and take control of my life. While others still bully me every day it no longer phases me, they became mere hot air whistlers in the wind of the halls. I found places to go, things to do, and made an effort to speak with people who would value knowing me; it turned out there were a lot of them. I realized I am strong and resilient, and nothing is going to stop me from obtaining my goal of living a successful, interesting, effective life of my own Get more content on HelpWriting.net
