Persuasive Essay On Helping People
"Why be negative when you can choose to be positive," my mom always told me. Her quote inspired me to make my purpose of life being
successful. Having a purpose can mean having a goal, but also doing something with a strong justification. My main goal in life is to become a
Physical Therapist because their career involves helping people that suffer by healing their medical disease; Disorders such as Alzheimer's
disease, joint pain, head trauma. I believe that people should not live a life in emotional nor physical pain so, in order to fix it, I must make a
move by helping them. However, at this moment in my life, my purpose is to help the world by volunteering at local markets, going green, and
sharing positivity. Willing to devote a few hours of your day to help the community is one of the best ways to assist the world. In light of frequent
volunteering, you will start to make more relationships with people within your neighborhood. Familiarizing yourself with others that enjoying
doing similar activities as yourself introduces you to become more social. Some people are not well at making new friends because they are
timid. Volunteering would be a smart idea for shy individuals, considering that it can enhance their communication skills amongst others. A year
ago, I volunteered at Tamp General Hospital (TGH). I distributed out toys and gift cards to sick children whose ages ranged between a year old and
eight years old. Once entering the room of the sick, I could feel melancholy through the air all because of the saddened faces of the youth, laying
down on their electric beds. With this in mind, I worked harder to fill their hearts with joy and true happiness. A girl named Anna had a chance to
have a conversation with me. Her smile lines and dimples deepened the second we started talking. Sadly, it made me realize how infrequently
hospitalized children get to see the outside world. Right then, instant gratification hit me, as I made Anna become enlightened by our talk. Volunteering
can change your viewpoint on the world by making you realize how much the world needs help. While you help out others, you get to help yourself by
becoming more social and being proud of

Helping Others
Helping others can be very rewarding and beneficial to both parties. After going to the Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting and Our Community Place
(OCP), I have realized the benefits of helping others and I have gained new perspectives on others. While I was there I met some very interesting
people that might not have the best lives but they know how to make the best of what they have. I felt like I gained some knowledge and insight on
different things and it made me feel good to help them out. In my lifetime I feel as though I have overcome many obsticles and accomplished many
goals and as I looked around at others that were less fortunate than me I became even more thankful and more willing to help others. It made me feel

Some see it as a church or a counseling center. It is a place to go for enjoyment and help. They provide food and exercising as well as plays,
activities or talent shows. The shelter is a place for homeless people in the city and a place for them to pray and seek religious insight. The leader
of the OCP is Ron Copland and is a great supporter and motivator for this shelter. He wants everyone to feel closer and equal. He has had many
great ideas to make this place a successful shelter and made him a respectable leader and achiever. He is extremely dedicated and spends most of
his time and money into this volunteer only facility. He is a very inspirational man and has done so much in his lifetime to help others that time I
was there I wanted to help and show my gratitude and respect for all he has done. He is a wonderful man and he has succeeded in life. The OCP is
a group that uses caring experiences and working together to help others. Recovering alcoholics and current alcoholics come here to work together
and keep busy while trying to get over their problem. They use agriculture and other jobs to show them how to move on and work together. They use
a program called OCM which is our community works. They learn to work with each other versus doing it all alone. The center does many activities
and programs to get everyone involved and help them run these programs and volunteers like my self help keep this

Philosophy Of Helping Research Paper
Scherrice StClair HUS 310 Becoming a Helper and My Philosophy of Helping In this paper, I will be discussing my views on what being a
professional helper means to me, the things that motivate me, my views in working in the field of human services, my cultural values, my
responsibilities as a professional helper, my hopes and dream, and my first experience with helping. I've been in the helping service my whole life.
My first experience with helping others started at home with my mother. I was a helper in my family where caring for others was highly rewarding
to me. I knew fulfilling all of my family's wishes and demands would be impossible, but back then I had developed a belief in responsibility to take
care of everyone else, regardless...show more content...

Friendship Essay: Helping a Friend in Need
It is very sad to see a friend or relative suffering or in need, especially when they pretend that everything is all right. It is a delicate situation when
approaching someone in this predicament, as often a person's pride stands in the way of reaching out for comfort. How to offer your help to an
independent friend or relative in this position requires a bit of clever manipulation and a not–so– obvious plan in order to help.
If the problem at hand is a financial matter, the first response would be to offer them a loan. On the other hand, most people would be embarrassed to
admit to this, and will perhaps be offended at the offer. However, instead of outright offering them money, trading a service in return for payment
would not seem as...show more content...
This will certainly make them feel better and will be helping them out at the same time.
Friends or relatives who have children may experience times when they cannot afford to give them the luxuries of toys, games or name brand
clothing. At the same time, while most children do not understand hard times, these friends or relatives hurt inside because of this. It would
probably be insulting to them if you bought a bag of toys, a new wardrobe for the kids or a slew of games and delivered these items in order to
help. Overall, there is a way to present such items in a fashion that will not seem like charity. While honesty is the best policy, lending a helping
hand when we are in a position to do so often takes precedence. Telling our life long friend or family member that our children received clothing as a
gift, but it did not fit, or perhaps received a duplicate toy or game and offering it to their children is a way to help in times of despair.
Many times when family or friends decide to meet or get together to go out for dinner, drinks, or even to a movie, we take for granite the expense of
these excursions and expect that everyone can participate. On the contrary, when a friend or relative bows out, the reason why they decline becomes
obvious. Here again, little white lies come in to play, and compassion takes over. Mentioning to this friend or relative that you

My Worldview On Helping Others And Poverty
This paper discusses who I am and how I have become the person I am today through different cultural experiences and my worldview on helping
others and poverty. What makes me difference from other people, why Social Work interests me and the criteria to be a 'fit and proper' Social Worker.
The word 'culture' can mean numerous things to different people around the world. Most of us are who we are today because of the different
'cultures' we have been exposed to over the years through, friends, family and community to name a few. A brief definition of the word 'culture'
means 'the total of the inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action' (Culture, 2012). Many of
us would share a belief and/or view on situations based on our culture and what we have been exposed to. For example, I learnt my cultural values
and idea through family, but because I left home at a young age, I learnt different ideas and beliefs through friends, community, work and study. As I
became older, these changed, because of marriage, new country and had a family of my own. Therefore, my cultural experiences kept changing with
me, for example, my 'study culture', turned into 'primary school and kindy'. Now I am a mother, I try and instil some of that into my children as well
as allowing them to create their own beliefs and values through their own culture, like school and recreational activities.
In addition of being a part of a 'mothers culture' I am

Helping Interaction
This 15–minute helping interaction gave me a real experience of being a therapist, making me learn more about myself through helping interaction and
deeply understand how to be an empathic therapist.
This experience gave me opportunities to explore myself and my inner world. I never realized before that I am a highly emotional person. Being
an emotional person is not a bad thing; however, being a highly emotional person makes me very sensitive to everyone and everything. During the
process of helping my partner with her issue of smoking, I tried to use great manner to build a trust and respectful relationship with her. However,
when I did not get positive responses from her as I expected, I felt very upset. Also, I felt bad and uncomfortable when my helper told me what I did
wrong and what I needed to fix. In the whole helping session, I gave many emotional responses to my...show more content...
I found that I need to make improvements in many respects. First, I need to improve my opening statement to make it more clearly and smoothly and
give my client an open question to encourage her to talk about her issue. Moreover, I need to make an improvement on identifying specific emotions
that clients are feeling. In this session, I failed to use "feeling" vocabulary to reflect her feelings and create an empathic environment. In addition, I
need to learn not to let my own experience and judgement influence the helping process. For example, when my client was talking about how smoking
habit took away her studying time, I was thinking, "exactly, bad habits always influence many students' academic performance in a negative way."
Although I did not say it, I wanted to say this to help her feel accepted and understood. This may not what she was thinking, but I was thinking it
because I have experienced it before. To effectively help people explore themselves, I should make an improvement in these

Are People Likely To Protect Others?
Many people wonder why they are left alone and without a purpose, but the solution has always been in plain sight; it is always in your best
interest to aid others. If you are too focused on yourself and act as if you are the only one that matters, who would help you when you wouldn't
help anyone? The reasons why it would be wise to protect others is shown throughout history and many people's lives, proven true time and time
again. Standing up to injustices happening to a person can form a strong trust between you and that person, even if they are someone you never
have met before. Although it is implied by parents or society that as an individual you should only concern yourself with problems that pertain to
you, it is crucial that you recognize the struggles of others because of the various benefits it can provide for you. While many people believe trying
to protect others will produce negativity, the actuality is that doing this allures benefits to your happiness which in turn improves your overall mental
state. What I mean by mental state is how you are feeling at a certain time and whether you are thinking about a situation negatively or positively.
This is where happiness plays a major role towards your state of mind, as proven by a study ran by a group of sociologists. They claimed that people
who described themselves as, "very happy" volunteered in helping others or participating in community service for 5.8 hours a month. This study
consisted of 2000 people

Reflective Essay On Helping People
We always talked about helping others. I noticed that you love helping people, it gives you joy to help others, and I think that's something we both
share. I understand now, when you cannot help me, you don't feel the joy. In a way you feel like you can't help me and it may feel like a rejection. I
am not rejecting you when you offer help and I say no. There are times where I should have asked for help and I didn't, because I thought you couldn't,
which isn't an excuse, I should have given you a chance. I didn't ask for help because I was embarrassed and thought you would think less of me. I
have problems with helping others and my professor actually pulled me aside from the final and wanted me to write why I felt like I need to be a savoir,
and help others so much. I talked to her after class as a therapist and not a professor. I realized that what I thought was helping, was actually not. I
thought all help was good and it's not. When I go out my way and help others who been helped their whole lives, I'm just feeding into what they want.
I'm not letting them learn on their own, and will continue to help, and its actually not helping at all. I am guilty of doing that to you sometimes. I'm
always trying to help and it's not real help and we get stuck in the same cycle.
We went back and forth on this relationship, at one point you didn't want it, and I did, another point you wanted it and I didn't. There were points
where we both wanted it and It was wonderful. I had learned

Lending a Helping Hand Essay
While riding down the street do you ever see homeless people? Do you stop and stare or act as if they don't exist? If you're the type of person who
acts as if they were not there; well the fact is that they do and there are many homeless people worldwide. Often a homeless person is suffering
from starvation or they are mentally ill. Some of these homeless people do not have the choice of being homeless or if not it may be the
governments fault. That's because they constantly raise the prices of things including homes. When jobs are very scarce, it would be hard to pay any
type of bills or for food. The government could lower the prices but they do not they just increase them little by little. There is a simple solution to all

(Balkin Karen) Between 1973 and 1993 more than 2.2 million low rent apartment have disappeared (Bruce Berleson). If these apartments could
magically re–appear than that would be great to get these people up off of the streets and in a nice affordable place to live in. "In the city of Los
Angeles they had a 38% decrease in their homelessness population count" (The Medical News). Not only is the housing prices to much but the wait
list for housing benefits are even longer. "The average wait for public housing was 19 months; the average wait for Section 8 certificates and vouchers
was 21–23 months. 45% of cities have stopped taking public housing applications in at least one assisted housing program due to extensive waiting
lists" (Shaft Jay). Shorting the wait time could really do some good also. There are many veterans who are living on the streets. Most of these
veterans are mentally ill from fighting in combat. If more homeless shelters were to get built than there would be no need for them to be sleeping
on the streets. Did you know that the "American war can create many homeless people each year. Many of these people need a place to stay because
they could be suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic stress disorder), substance abuse disorder and/or physical disabilities" (galegroup.com) Should

The Homeless: Are They Worth Helping?
What is the one thing that all people wish they had, or take for granted if they do have? This is a thing that most do not even realize that they have the
luxury to call their own. Some find it with family and friends, some with material things, and some with the mental state they call normal. This is a
home. People are in constant poverty all around us and we do nothing to help. While poverty is a little different from homelessness, it's no different in
the fact that millions of people all across the United States are struggling to get by every day, and we do nothing to help. People live in community
housing, in the streets, in cardboard shelters, in between buildings and alleys, under bridges and inside of sewers. But these are just the well–known
places, created by the 'hollywood movie' standards of homeless people. Poverty is happening all around you, whether it be by the neighbors that can't
afford to buy groceries anymore, the couple downtown that has nowhere to stay because their apartment building was burned to the ground, or the
children that run away from their abusive or destructive families in desperate attempts to regain the grip of control on their life. If there has ever
been a more pressing time for the citizens of the U.S. to stand up for each other, it is now. I believe that while there are many ways to help the
homeless and assist them, but some of these solutions are not working. If we can locate the good and honest

revving up my truck to try to provide more power. At this point we gave up, we then realized that we could roll start his pickup. I pulled his truck
with my truck up the bump to my sloped driveway. He got rolling, popped the clutch, and off he went.

BeoWulf is placed on the spectrum somewhere toward the top between robin hood and man in the water because he was very courageous and strong
but he did not give the ultimate gift like man in the water but he was not acting evil as Robin Hood was. The Man in the Water showed great generosity
when it comes to human nature which put him at the top of the spectrum. There is a difference between Man in the Water and BeoWulf because
BeoWulf is not as high up as Man in the water is on the spectrum.
The evidence that I have shown on Man in the Water shows that this man was willing to risk everything for complete strangers. It shows me that
this man is willing to do anything for his fellow man and he is a true hero. This man is on the top of the spectrum in every way possible. He is at
the top because he gave the greatest gift possible, and continued to give it to everyone till he died for his good deeds. The spectrum contains good and
bad characters and this man was definitely very good.
In Robin Hood Robin's actions put him on both ends of the spectrum he is good

they can decide when they want to work, how much they want to work, and how hard they want to work. Some private practice owners sometimes
even only work part time. On the other hand, psychologists that work for hospitals, nursery homes or other healthcare facilities generally have set

government or school also have set work hours but they very rarely have to work weekends, evenings, or holidays.

Definition Essay On Helping
Being Helpful in Different ways: A Definition Essay "You do not need a reason to help someone." ("Media Web Apps," n.d.). Helping is the reaction
that comes from heart not because of self–interest. Some people have temperament to be helpful, or it can be nurtured from parents. When someone
needs help in any way, people offer their hand without thinking. Helping is caring about yourself and caring about others. Helping is not being
conceited and not seeing others lower than you when you help them. Helping is when someone lends a hand without thinking and not waiting for
anything in return. Helping is the action which can effectively change people's lives by giving money, encouraging people and expecting results in
the future. People may not be able to change the world, but they may change a person's life by help his/her. Helping people can be shown in many

Ways to Help Others
Helping others is one of the most important things one can do in today's time I believe in helping those that I love and care about. Even people I
don't really know need help and I'm willing to help them in any way that I can. It makes my day knowing that I've helped someone and put a smile
on both of our faces. I feel good knowing I can actually say that I made a difference in someone's life besides mine. There are plenty of ways to help
people out. You can help someone out mentally, physically, emotionally and financially. For example, one way to help others out is by doing it
financially. Financially is one of the biggest ways today to help someone. There are many organizations to help families out in the world thatneed
money for a family member that has cancer, a diseases or even a family member they have lost. These are the most helpful ways finically. It makes
the families fell so much more relieved that they have help and don't have to struggle on how they're going to pay for things such as transportation,
treatments, and all the extra bills they have to put money towards. Other ways to help out is emotionally and mentally. People go through stuff
every day and feel like they have no one to run to. Being there for someone emotionally and mentally is one of the best things you can do. Not only
is it one of the best things you could do it can also be one of the hardest things to deal with. It's one of the most privileged ways to help someone; they

anything else. While dealing with the patients' problems causes stress on the counselor/therapist/psychologist, it is not the only thing. Scheduling
appointments, doing research, observation, and reports. What is not being discussed when on this topic is the most stressful of this job area. The
therapist/counselor/psychologist has to deal with more billing issues, tax issues, and insurance issues more than anything else. They may thrive in

Care for others. The way this will help you achieve happiness is that when you help others it gives you a warm feeling inside. It makes you feel as if

Defending our country is not an easy task, and the emotional stress can be crippling. Statistics show a large number of previously employed military
men and women become homeless once discharged, and The National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients indicates that a solid
23% of all homeless Americans are veterans of the United States armed forces (qtd. in Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans; hereinafter MSHV).
While the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs extends help to many, there is still a large demand for its services, leaving it up to communities to

Why Do People Help Others? Essay
To discuss why people help others we must consider whether people are by nature selfless or selfish. The dominant view today in psychology is of
universal egoism; that we are fundamentally selfish, and that altruism (helping motivated by the wish to benefit another person) an impossibility. One
form of universal egoism is Piliavin et al's "arousal: cost–reward" model, whereby faced with a potential helping situation we weigh the
probable costs and rewards of alternative courses of action, then arrive at a decision which produces the best outcome for ourselves.Darley and Batson
(1973) conducted an experiment into the effect of the cost time in the decision to offer help. They found that 63% of students with plenty of time to get

Piliavin found that there is evidence of racism occurring in our decisions to help when he found that blacks were much more likely to help a black
drunk, and whites a white drunk. This suggests that we are less likely to help those with the least genes in common with us.Chagnon & Bugos
(1979), in an analysis of fighting in Southern Venezuela, found that the likelihood of a person helping another was strongly correlated with their
genetic relatedness to the person. However, how do we account for cases of altruism on the part of animals who are not related?
This could be explained by the fact that all members of a species have an element of shared genes even if not at all closely related. Trivers (1971),
however, proposed the principle of delayed reciprocal altruism, whereby animals return favours, therefore helpful behaviour is worthwhile because it is
likely to be returned. For example, Packer (1977) observed that male baboons which assisted another male in courting were more likely to receive this
help in return. Batson (1987), in contradiction with universal egoism proposed the "empathy–altruism" hypothesis. He saw helping as the
result of feeling empathy (experiencing another's emotions). By experimentally manipulating the degree to which his subjects experienced empathy or
personal distress in a potential helping situation Batson showed that empathetically aroused

Asking For Help Essay
Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly
difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I need

We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need someone to explain something discussed in
Psychology class today and that person may need the favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every
area of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I realized that I seldom request and often reject
offers of assistance. A successful student would employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve their
goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a
key factor in being successful in college. In order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish that,
he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student does not understand something and refuses to ask for
help when it is readily available, they are only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is more
knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead to total understanding. This will enable them to perform
better on my assignments and to keep moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an

Persuasive Essay On Helping People

  • 1. Persuasive Essay On Helping People "Why be negative when you can choose to be positive," my mom always told me. Her quote inspired me to make my purpose of life being successful. Having a purpose can mean having a goal, but also doing something with a strong justification. My main goal in life is to become a Physical Therapist because their career involves helping people that suffer by healing their medical disease; Disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, joint pain, head trauma. I believe that people should not live a life in emotional nor physical pain so, in order to fix it, I must make a move by helping them. However, at this moment in my life, my purpose is to help the world by volunteering at local markets, going green, and sharing positivity. Willing to devote a few hours of your day to help the community is one of the best ways to assist the world. In light of frequent volunteering, you will start to make more relationships with people within your neighborhood. Familiarizing yourself with others that enjoying doing similar activities as yourself introduces you to become more social. Some people are not well at making new friends because they are timid. Volunteering would be a smart idea for shy individuals, considering that it can enhance their communication skills amongst others. A year ago, I volunteered at Tamp General Hospital (TGH). I distributed out toys and gift cards to sick children whose ages ranged between a year old and eight years old. Once entering the room of the sick, I could feel melancholy through the air all because of the saddened faces of the youth, laying down on their electric beds. With this in mind, I worked harder to fill their hearts with joy and true happiness. A girl named Anna had a chance to have a conversation with me. Her smile lines and dimples deepened the second we started talking. Sadly, it made me realize how infrequently hospitalized children get to see the outside world. Right then, instant gratification hit me, as I made Anna become enlightened by our talk. Volunteering can change your viewpoint on the world by making you realize how much the world needs help. While you help out others, you get to help yourself by becoming more social and being proud of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Helping Others Helping others can be very rewarding and beneficial to both parties. After going to the Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting and Our Community Place (OCP), I have realized the benefits of helping others and I have gained new perspectives on others. While I was there I met some very interesting people that might not have the best lives but they know how to make the best of what they have. I felt like I gained some knowledge and insight on different things and it made me feel good to help them out. In my lifetime I feel as though I have overcome many obsticles and accomplished many goals and as I looked around at others that were less fortunate than me I became even more thankful and more willing to help others. It made me feel good to see others...show more content... Some see it as a church or a counseling center. It is a place to go for enjoyment and help. They provide food and exercising as well as plays, activities or talent shows. The shelter is a place for homeless people in the city and a place for them to pray and seek religious insight. The leader of the OCP is Ron Copland and is a great supporter and motivator for this shelter. He wants everyone to feel closer and equal. He has had many great ideas to make this place a successful shelter and made him a respectable leader and achiever. He is extremely dedicated and spends most of his time and money into this volunteer only facility. He is a very inspirational man and has done so much in his lifetime to help others that time I was there I wanted to help and show my gratitude and respect for all he has done. He is a wonderful man and he has succeeded in life. The OCP is a group that uses caring experiences and working together to help others. Recovering alcoholics and current alcoholics come here to work together and keep busy while trying to get over their problem. They use agriculture and other jobs to show them how to move on and work together. They use a program called OCM which is our community works. They learn to work with each other versus doing it all alone. The center does many activities and programs to get everyone involved and help them run these programs and volunteers like my self help keep this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Philosophy Of Helping Research Paper Scherrice StClair HUS 310 Becoming a Helper and My Philosophy of Helping In this paper, I will be discussing my views on what being a professional helper means to me, the things that motivate me, my views in working in the field of human services, my cultural values, my responsibilities as a professional helper, my hopes and dream, and my first experience with helping. I've been in the helping service my whole life. My first experience with helping others started at home with my mother. I was a helper in my family where caring for others was highly rewarding to me. I knew fulfilling all of my family's wishes and demands would be impossible, but back then I had developed a belief in responsibility to take care of everyone else, regardless...show more content... In lieu of the unfortunate incident that has happened with DPSS, I wouldn't want to repeat some of the actions that was taken or lack thereof. I would be a professional with ethics that include integrity, following all laws, loyalty to the policies and procedures as well as proper maintenance of my client records and case Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Friendship Essay: Helping a Friend in Need It is very sad to see a friend or relative suffering or in need, especially when they pretend that everything is all right. It is a delicate situation when approaching someone in this predicament, as often a person's pride stands in the way of reaching out for comfort. How to offer your help to an independent friend or relative in this position requires a bit of clever manipulation and a not–so– obvious plan in order to help. If the problem at hand is a financial matter, the first response would be to offer them a loan. On the other hand, most people would be embarrassed to admit to this, and will perhaps be offended at the offer. However, instead of outright offering them money, trading a service in return for payment would not seem as...show more content... This will certainly make them feel better and will be helping them out at the same time. Friends or relatives who have children may experience times when they cannot afford to give them the luxuries of toys, games or name brand clothing. At the same time, while most children do not understand hard times, these friends or relatives hurt inside because of this. It would probably be insulting to them if you bought a bag of toys, a new wardrobe for the kids or a slew of games and delivered these items in order to help. Overall, there is a way to present such items in a fashion that will not seem like charity. While honesty is the best policy, lending a helping hand when we are in a position to do so often takes precedence. Telling our life long friend or family member that our children received clothing as a gift, but it did not fit, or perhaps received a duplicate toy or game and offering it to their children is a way to help in times of despair. Many times when family or friends decide to meet or get together to go out for dinner, drinks, or even to a movie, we take for granite the expense of these excursions and expect that everyone can participate. On the contrary, when a friend or relative bows out, the reason why they decline becomes obvious. Here again, little white lies come in to play, and compassion takes over. Mentioning to this friend or relative that you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My Worldview On Helping Others And Poverty This paper discusses who I am and how I have become the person I am today through different cultural experiences and my worldview on helping others and poverty. What makes me difference from other people, why Social Work interests me and the criteria to be a 'fit and proper' Social Worker. The word 'culture' can mean numerous things to different people around the world. Most of us are who we are today because of the different 'cultures' we have been exposed to over the years through, friends, family and community to name a few. A brief definition of the word 'culture' means 'the total of the inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action' (Culture, 2012). Many of us would share a belief and/or view on situations based on our culture and what we have been exposed to. For example, I learnt my cultural values and idea through family, but because I left home at a young age, I learnt different ideas and beliefs through friends, community, work and study. As I became older, these changed, because of marriage, new country and had a family of my own. Therefore, my cultural experiences kept changing with me, for example, my 'study culture', turned into 'primary school and kindy'. Now I am a mother, I try and instil some of that into my children as well as allowing them to create their own beliefs and values through their own culture, like school and recreational activities. In addition of being a part of a 'mothers culture' I am Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Helping Interaction This 15–minute helping interaction gave me a real experience of being a therapist, making me learn more about myself through helping interaction and deeply understand how to be an empathic therapist. This experience gave me opportunities to explore myself and my inner world. I never realized before that I am a highly emotional person. Being an emotional person is not a bad thing; however, being a highly emotional person makes me very sensitive to everyone and everything. During the process of helping my partner with her issue of smoking, I tried to use great manner to build a trust and respectful relationship with her. However, when I did not get positive responses from her as I expected, I felt very upset. Also, I felt bad and uncomfortable when my helper told me what I did wrong and what I needed to fix. In the whole helping session, I gave many emotional responses to my...show more content... I found that I need to make improvements in many respects. First, I need to improve my opening statement to make it more clearly and smoothly and give my client an open question to encourage her to talk about her issue. Moreover, I need to make an improvement on identifying specific emotions that clients are feeling. In this session, I failed to use "feeling" vocabulary to reflect her feelings and create an empathic environment. In addition, I need to learn not to let my own experience and judgement influence the helping process. For example, when my client was talking about how smoking habit took away her studying time, I was thinking, "exactly, bad habits always influence many students' academic performance in a negative way." Although I did not say it, I wanted to say this to help her feel accepted and understood. This may not what she was thinking, but I was thinking it because I have experienced it before. To effectively help people explore themselves, I should make an improvement in these Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Are People Likely To Protect Others? Many people wonder why they are left alone and without a purpose, but the solution has always been in plain sight; it is always in your best interest to aid others. If you are too focused on yourself and act as if you are the only one that matters, who would help you when you wouldn't help anyone? The reasons why it would be wise to protect others is shown throughout history and many people's lives, proven true time and time again. Standing up to injustices happening to a person can form a strong trust between you and that person, even if they are someone you never have met before. Although it is implied by parents or society that as an individual you should only concern yourself with problems that pertain to you, it is crucial that you recognize the struggles of others because of the various benefits it can provide for you. While many people believe trying to protect others will produce negativity, the actuality is that doing this allures benefits to your happiness which in turn improves your overall mental state. What I mean by mental state is how you are feeling at a certain time and whether you are thinking about a situation negatively or positively. This is where happiness plays a major role towards your state of mind, as proven by a study ran by a group of sociologists. They claimed that people who described themselves as, "very happy" volunteered in helping others or participating in community service for 5.8 hours a month. This study consisted of 2000 people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Reflective Essay On Helping People We always talked about helping others. I noticed that you love helping people, it gives you joy to help others, and I think that's something we both share. I understand now, when you cannot help me, you don't feel the joy. In a way you feel like you can't help me and it may feel like a rejection. I am not rejecting you when you offer help and I say no. There are times where I should have asked for help and I didn't, because I thought you couldn't, which isn't an excuse, I should have given you a chance. I didn't ask for help because I was embarrassed and thought you would think less of me. I have problems with helping others and my professor actually pulled me aside from the final and wanted me to write why I felt like I need to be a savoir, and help others so much. I talked to her after class as a therapist and not a professor. I realized that what I thought was helping, was actually not. I thought all help was good and it's not. When I go out my way and help others who been helped their whole lives, I'm just feeding into what they want. I'm not letting them learn on their own, and will continue to help, and its actually not helping at all. I am guilty of doing that to you sometimes. I'm always trying to help and it's not real help and we get stuck in the same cycle. We went back and forth on this relationship, at one point you didn't want it, and I did, another point you wanted it and I didn't. There were points where we both wanted it and It was wonderful. • 9. Lending a Helping Hand Essay While riding down the street do you ever see homeless people? Do you stop and stare or act as if they don't exist? If you're the type of person who acts as if they were not there; well the fact is that they do and there are many homeless people worldwide. Often a homeless person is suffering from starvation or they are mentally ill. Some of these homeless people do not have the choice of being homeless or if not it may be the governments fault. That's because they constantly raise the prices of things including homes. When jobs are very scarce, it would be hard to pay any type of bills or for food. The government could lower the prices but they do not they just increase them little by little. There is a simple solution to all this madness...show more content... (Balkin Karen) Between 1973 and 1993 more than 2.2 million low rent apartment have disappeared (Bruce Berleson). If these apartments could magically re–appear than that would be great to get these people up off of the streets and in a nice affordable place to live in. "In the city of Los Angeles they had a 38% decrease in their homelessness population count" (The Medical News). Not only is the housing prices to much but the wait list for housing benefits are even longer. "The average wait for public housing was 19 months; the average wait for Section 8 certificates and vouchers was 21–23 months. 45% of cities have stopped taking public housing applications in at least one assisted housing program due to extensive waiting lists" (Shaft Jay). Shorting the wait time could really do some good also. There are many veterans who are living on the streets. Most of these veterans are mentally ill from fighting in combat. If more homeless shelters were to get built than there would be no need for them to be sleeping on the streets. Did you know that the "American war can create many homeless people each year. Many of these people need a place to stay because they could be suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic stress disorder), substance abuse disorder and/or physical disabilities" (galegroup.com) Should every person believe that a veteran have a right to have a place to stay since they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Persuasive Essay On Helping The Homeless: Are They Worth Helping? What is the one thing that all people wish they had, or take for granted if they do have? This is a thing that most do not even realize that they have the luxury to call their own. Some find it with family and friends, some with material things, and some with the mental state they call normal. This is a home. People are in constant poverty all around us and we do nothing to help. While poverty is a little different from homelessness, it's no different in the fact that millions of people all across the United States are struggling to get by every day, and we do nothing to help. People live in community housing, in the streets, in cardboard shelters, in between buildings and alleys, under bridges and inside of sewers. But these are just the well–known places, created by the 'hollywood movie' standards of homeless people. Poverty is happening all around you, whether it be by the neighbors that can't afford to buy groceries anymore, the couple downtown that has nowhere to stay because their apartment building was burned to the ground, or the children that run away from their abusive or destructive families in desperate attempts to regain the grip of control on their life. If there has ever been a more pressing time for the citizens of the U.S. to stand up for each other, it is now. I believe that while there are many ways to help the homeless and assist them, but some of these solutions are not working. If we can locate the good and honest Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Importance of Helping Others One time I had to help my friend Louie. We had been at my house and he forgot to turn his lights off in his old pickup. He went to start it and it would not turn over, he realized that he left his lights on. I brought my pickup over to try and jump start his pickup. I wasted a quarter tank of gas revving up my truck to try to provide more power. At this point we gave up, we then realized that we could roll start his pickup. I pulled his truck with my truck up the bump to my sloped driveway. He got rolling, popped the clutch, and off he went. Being able to help someone is a great advantage in life. BeoWulf is placed on the spectrum somewhere toward the top between robin hood and man in the water because he was very courageous and strong but he did not give the ultimate gift like man in the water but he was not acting evil as Robin Hood was. The Man in the Water showed great generosity when it comes to human nature which put him at the top of the spectrum. There is a difference between Man in the Water and BeoWulf because BeoWulf is not as high up as Man in the water is on the spectrum. The evidence that I have shown on Man in the Water shows that this man was willing to risk everything for complete strangers. It shows me that this man is willing to do anything for his fellow man and he is a true hero. This man is on the top of the spectrum in every way possible. He is at the top because he gave the greatest gift possible, and continued to give it to everyone till he died for his good deeds. • 12. Everyone has their own personal problems and there are people that work behind the scenes to help solve these personal troubles. Psychologists study human behavior and counsel people in a way that will help them solve their dilemmas. There are several different fields in psychology and each field specializes in solving crises in different situations. Considering psychology as a career has several advantages such as interesting duties, excellent pay and remarkable hours. Psychologists have several interesting tasks they must be able to complete. In addition the the schooling, a student must also complete a two year internship. Although going into personality study can be expensive, it is a well paying job, making it easy to pay back any student loans. Also, completing an internship can be very exciting and helpful because of the hands on work before trying to complete the needed tasks without any experience. Even though psychology has a few downfalls, along with every other occupation, it is a great job to consider and possibly pursue. A final reason to consider psychology as a career choices for the excellent work hours. A psychotherapist's schedule all depends on where he or she works. For instance, if a psychologist owns or runs their own private practice they can decide when they want to work, how much they want to work, and how hard they want to work. Some private practice owners sometimes even only work part time. On the other hand, psychologists that work for hospitals, nursery homes or other healthcare facilities generally have set schedule. This schedule can include weekends, evenings, and holidays. Similar to those who work at healthcare facilities, those who work for the government or school also have set work hours but they very rarely have to work weekends, evenings, or holidays. • 13. Definition Essay On Helping Being Helpful in Different ways: A Definition Essay "You do not need a reason to help someone." ("Media Web Apps," n.d.). Helping is the reaction that comes from heart not because of self–interest. Some people have temperament to be helpful, or it can be nurtured from parents. When someone needs help in any way, people offer their hand without thinking. Helping is caring about yourself and caring about others. Helping is not being conceited and not seeing others lower than you when you help them. Helping is when someone lends a hand without thinking and not waiting for anything in return. • 17. Helping Those Who Have Helped Us Essay Defending our country is not an easy task, and the emotional stress can be crippling. Statistics show a large number of previously employed military men and women become homeless once discharged, and The National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients indicates that a solid 23% of all homeless Americans are veterans of the United States armed forces (qtd. in Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans; hereinafter MSHV). While the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs extends help to many, there is still a large demand for its services, leaving it up to communities to organize help for our freedom fighters; hence the creation of the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, located in Wheaton, IL. Since its beginning, the MSHV has...show more content... The snowball just kept rolling and over the course of a year they managed to: obtain a special use permit; zoning change; group care license; a $300,000 grant from the Federal Community Development Block Grant program, plus a capital grant from U.S. Department of Veterans to aid in the purchase of the home. Named after a Wheaton native killed in 2004 in the line of duty, the LCpl Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans opened its home to veterans on January 8, 2007. To this day the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans provides services to those veterans in need; as long as they meet the requirements. The MSHV is open to those who have served our country, but due to lack of resources, stipulations were put into effect to filter the amount of applicants to those more likely to benefit from the help. To start, veterans must have a greater than dishonorable discharge and must have served a minimum of 180 days. Weapons, sex, or violent crime convictions are also included in the exclusion criteria, along with the chronic mentally ill; especially those being treated with mood stabilizers. MSHV prefers the veterans be inflicted with Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder and/ or have substance abuse problems, but all applicants are interviewed before intake and exceptions may apply. Although it may seem the restrictions for the transitional housing program are a bit tight, the program is only Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Why Do People Help Others? Essay To discuss why people help others we must consider whether people are by nature selfless or selfish. The dominant view today in psychology is of universal egoism; that we are fundamentally selfish, and that altruism (helping motivated by the wish to benefit another person) an impossibility. One form of universal egoism is Piliavin et al's "arousal: cost–reward" model, whereby faced with a potential helping situation we weigh the probable costs and rewards of alternative courses of action, then arrive at a decision which produces the best outcome for ourselves.Darley and Batson (1973) conducted an experiment into the effect of the cost time in the decision to offer help. They found that 63% of students with plenty of time to get ...show more content... Piliavin found that there is evidence of racism occurring in our decisions to help when he found that blacks were much more likely to help a black drunk, and whites a white drunk. This suggests that we are less likely to help those with the least genes in common with us.Chagnon & Bugos (1979), in an analysis of fighting in Southern Venezuela, found that the likelihood of a person helping another was strongly correlated with their genetic relatedness to the person. However, how do we account for cases of altruism on the part of animals who are not related? This could be explained by the fact that all members of a species have an element of shared genes even if not at all closely related. Trivers (1971), however, proposed the principle of delayed reciprocal altruism, whereby animals return favours, therefore helpful behaviour is worthwhile because it is likely to be returned. For example, Packer (1977) observed that male baboons which assisted another male in courting were more likely to receive this help in return. Batson (1987), in contradiction with universal egoism proposed the "empathy–altruism" hypothesis. He saw helping as the result of feeling empathy (experiencing another's emotions). By experimentally manipulating the degree to which his subjects experienced empathy or personal distress in a potential helping situation Batson showed that empathetically aroused Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Asking For Help Essay Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so that I may become a successful student. The first strategy is to learn that I cannot do everything by myself. Typically, I never ask for...show more content... We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an Get more content on HelpWriting.net
