The importance of the environment appears when many disconcerting events throughout the years have emerged: tsunami and flooding, drought
and starving, pollution, declining animal populations and many others. Looking behind these events is make us realize that we have caused
irreversible damaged, through our daily behaviors.
We now live in a modern, consumerist and largely urban existence throughout the developed world and we consume a lot of natural resources
every day. ENVS course focuses on understanding cause and effect of social, economic and environmental impacts between our need and our
product technologically and economically, and how to protect the environments in which we and others live. In ENVS class we do not learn just
about the environment, but also about our health as a society in ensuring that no people or areas of life suffer as a result of, and also about
examining the longer–term effects of the human activities and asking questions about how it improved and to ensure the quality of life for this
and future generations. Teaching students about sustainability have been very important. It develops the knowledge, values, and worldviews
required to make certain that there's enough for everyone, forever. It's different to other learning areas as it focuses on protecting natural
environments and creating an ecologically and socially just world through informed action. Sustainability curriculum in CU Denver develops the
capabilities, skills, and knowledge for

Environmental Fundamentals
Introduction
Environmental science is defined as the study of the environment and the interconnecting systems it contains, furthermore, the way people interact
with their natural surroundings and use natural resources (wise geek, 2013). Scientist in this field is highly interdisciplinary and extremely
diverse, for example, a scientist might study volcanoes or climate change. This essay will cover the following; the definition of environmental
science, the relationship between science and technology and how it affects environmental problems; the concept of environmental sustainability
and why it should be studied; how human...show more content...
Environmental Sustainability
Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of
keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental
sustainability so important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely preserving the life support
systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally.
Human Values affecting Society
The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species extinction has remained at one species per million
per year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on
earth by the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period (mindfully.org, 2013). As individuals, we obtain our
food, directly or indirectly from plants, for example, plant our primary use of medicines. Biodiversity also determines the properties of
communities and ecosystems, which capture energy from the sun. The world is less resilient, more homogeneous, less interesting, and with fewer
opportunities for our descendants and ourselves: where the process reaches

Importance Of Protecting The Environment Essay
Our environment undoubtedly has many things we can use to benefit our everyday lives. Even if our environment is not in tip–top shape, we need
to start taking care of it better. If we don't many things will happen. These things include plants dying, animals going extinct, air becoming
polluted, coral reefs dying, and water rapidly coming contaminated. Another problem our environment has to face, overcome, or adapt too is
Global Warming. Global Warming has and will continue to impact our environment worldwide if we do not begin taking immediate action and do
something to protect our environment.
Protecting our environment is indeed the first action that should be taken. Protecting the environment should take place locally and globally in
my opinion. There are many things that our local environment could do that would have have a tremendous impact on our environment that
genuinely would not take oodles of effort. A few of these could be as easy as recycling soda cans, old school or work papers, and glass bottles
and taking them to a local recycling center. When you recycle you are reusing things or making them into new things. Two more examples would
be hosting or participating in a highway clean up, or planting a community garden at a park. Globally, humans are responsible for Greenhouse
Gasses, pollution, and fossil fuel shortages. Globally, if everyone pitched in just a little bit, greenhouse gas emissions could go down drastically.
The way we could cut these emissions

Environmental Protection Agency Essay
1)When was the environmental protection agency (EPA) formed?
–1970
What events prompted its formation?
–The U.S. was rocked by a series of waste land toxic materials, the earth's automatic, self–cleansing, life support systems became increasingly
threatened and consequently people from all walks of life and from every part of the political spectrum were expressing their anxieties on the
streets and this happened to b the largest public American demonstration ever seen in America. Hence prompting President Richard Nixon
transmitted Reorganization Plan No. 3 to the United States Congress by executive order, creating the EPA as a single, independent agency from a
number of smaller arms of different federal agencies.

–The citizen suit provision of the Clean Water Actis an important tool to protect and improve rivers, creeks, streams, and wetlands especially as
state agencies may not have the resources to conduct regular water quality monitoring on every water body. Citizen involvement in monitoring
and reporting pollution problems is key to watershed protection; hereby helping the government enforce the laws.
4)The expression "canary in the coal mine" means an early warning of danger. (Coal miners would carry canaries or small animals with them into
mines to detect deadly but odorless and tasteless methane gas.)
a)To what does the expression "canary in the coal mine' apply in poisoned waters?
I will say that as much as the expression "Canary in the coal mine" implies an early warning of danger in mines so does it in water too. In this
case the fish directly helps us know the extent to which our ecological sphere is damaged, and helps humans to take the necessary precautions to
save the environment.
5)Twenty million Americans took to the streets for the first earth day in 1970 as a result of pollution they could see an smell: the Cuyahoga
river in Cleveland burned, with flames that towered eight stories high; the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara closed virtually all the beaches in
southern California; people had declared Lake Erie dead.
a)How according to the film, have both pollution and people's reaction to Earth day

During and since World War II the United States has produced millions of tons of toxic wastes during the manufacturing and processing of
products. These hazards were often left abandoned and no one really paid attention to their effect on our environment. In the 1980s Congress
established a Superfund Program. It was left for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to administer thesuperfund program, to find these
hazardous sites, investigate and determine the worst ones, and then clean up those sites across the United States. Over 15,000 sites were
identified and 1,400 were named to the National Priorities List (NPL). One of the towns was Picher Oklahoma named in the Tar Creek
Superfund Site. Picher and the neighboring towns covering over a 50 square mile area became known as the Tar Creek Superfund Site and
were officially put on the NPL on 8 September 1983 ("challenge posed to children's health by mixtures of toxic waste: the Tar Creek Superfund
Site as a case–study," n.d.). All of the information was finally out. The hazards were known. It was time for the clean up to begin. Where do you
begin when a problem is this large? The Environmental Protection Agency was tasked to take thelead in the clean–up. It was easy to identify the
hazards: contaminated water, contaminated soil, possible area collapse, and the lead laced chat piles. To begin the Superfund site cleanup the EPA
started with monitoring of the surface water, acid mine water discharge, and

Caring About Our Environment Essay
Caring About Our Environment
Improving and maintaining the earth's environment is becoming a more important task every day of our lives. Due to ignorance and frequent
carelessness, this important task is quickly becoming a critical one. For this reason, I took it upon myself to construct a strategic plan to enlighten
my peers to the problems of our environment. I did this in hopes that it would encourage everyone to act responsibly towards improving and
maintaining the environment. With ongoing threats to the earth's water supply, atmosphere, and surface, I found it necessary to devise a method of
environmental enlightenment. I plan to apply this method at my place of academic study, The University. If supported by the faculty...show more

I recently discovered that one cheeseburger takes more than 700 gallons of water to produce (includes water consumed by cows, water used to
irrigate the cornfields that feed the cows, and the water used to produce the beef and cheese). When considering the millions of cheeseburgers that
are consumed worldwide everyday, it is evident that the earth's water supply is declining rapidly. Due to air pollution, theozone layer is also being
consumed at an extreme rate. Its arch nemesis is the various fumes from cars and factories. Scientists estimate that each 1% drop in ozone levels
causes a 3 to 6% rise in skin cancer cases. Since the ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet and other high–energy radiation from penetrating to the
earth's surface, this is a crisis that has to be rectified. The ozone's depletion has dropped to a level so thin that if we brought it down to Earth, it
would only be as deep as the thickness of three dimes. The only positive outlook concerning this matter is that the ozone has the ability to
reconstruct itself when UV–C rays break the bond of O2. Single oxygen atoms combine with O2 to form ozone (UV–B rays limit this process still
yet). This evidence shows that the world is in dire need of an environmental resurrection. In order for this to occur and be successful, it would
require an effort by every individual nation of our world.
My resolution requires that The University of South Carolina

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW 1. To what extent have the principles of environmental law been incorporated in the Environmental Protection Act
2000 20TH MARCH, 2004. Introduction The environment is made up of the physical, biological and human elements. These three are different
facets of one and the same environment. Not only in recent years, the human environment has begun to impinge and burden the physical and
biological environment. It is only in recent years that the public has been made aware of the seriousness of the matter. This awareness, has, not

Sovereignty over natural resources and the environment in general In modern international law, permanent sovereignty over natural resources has
come to entail duties as well as rights. There has been an evolution of permanent sovereignty from a political claim to a principle of international
law. This principle led to debates on people's rights, nationalization, and environmental conservation. The right of peoples and nations to
permanent sovereignty over their natural wealth and resources must be exercised in the interest of their national development and of the
well–being of the people of the State concerned. The promotion of this principle was the natural manifestation of the ever–present fear of the
developing countries, that the Western World would continue exploiting their natural resources without conceding them a just and equitable
share. This principle[2] was implemented in our law and is found in both sections 3 and 4[3]. The principle states that the environment is a res
communis and thus should be enjoyed by all. The government as the bonus pater familias is entrusted with the protection of this resource. Section
3 is the best example of this principle, stating: "It shall be the duty of everyone together with the government to protect the environment and to
assist in the taking of preventive and remedial measures to protect the environment and manage natural resources in a sustainable manner[4]." The

Annie Leonard, a sustainability advocate, once said, "There is no such thing as "away". When we throw anything away it must go somewhere." In
other words, the waste that is disposed of within every household has to go somewhere. Although this quote appears to be insignificant, it
showcases how my mindset on environmental sustainability within my life professionally and personally has changed after taking this course. The
readings and lectures presented by Professor Birkenholtz, Lucero, McCall, Siva, and Viswanathan have allowed me to have a holistic way of
thinking relating to how my actions affect the wellbeing of the environment. This new way of thinking will allow me to foster a green
transformation towards sustainability by making an impact with my decisions throughout my career and personal endeavours. In other words, my
vision personally and professionally in regard to sustainability is to make an impact where I can, and bring awareness to the importance of
sustainability. Environmental Sustainability is a complex issue, but the importance should not be understated.
Before taking this course, sustainability was something that caught my interest. However, I ignored the idea that an impact could be made on a
personal level through my professional and personal experiences and decisions. Professor Siva's lectures on the exposed me to the validity of the
argument for sustainability. The society today takes water for granted because the idea of water being present is

Should we keep the Environmental Protection Agency? The EPA is the environmental protection agency and they deal with keeping the
environment clean and they enforce the laws to keep it clean. The agency was put together by President Richard Nixon on December 2, 1970. He
put them together to enforce the fines, sanctions and other measures. Their headquarters is in Washington D.C.The Environmental Protection
Agency always has people wondering where they get the money, what they will change, and how they help the world. Bill Clinton elected the head
of the environmental protection agency when he was elected and he chose Florida's secretary of environmental regulations. To start off,
President Bill Clinton elected Carol Browner to run the environmental protection agency (Carol M. Browner 50). Carol Browner sticks up to
what she feels is important for today's society. To continue, Browner won her role by getting her respect gained in 2 cases as Florida's
secretary of environmental regulations (Carol M. Browner 50). Browner was standing her ground when the federal government went after
Florida to restore the everglades. Lastly, Roosevelt and Pinchot were focused on the wise and efficient use of natural resources (Geary 226).
Roosevelt and Pinchot did whatever they needed to get more information on natural resources. Bill Clinton chose Carol M. Browner because he
knew that she would do her best in this position and with all of her experience for this position and also Roosevelt wanted to make the
environment better for today's society and also for all of the societies to still come. The Environmental Protective Agency works hard to make the
environment better and they also work hard to get enough money to fund it. According to multiple reports President Lyndon Johnson, "took an
interest in preservationist issues" (Girard 100). President Johnson was interested in the Environmental Protection Agency and wanted to do
whatever it was to be a part of it. To continue, a case of environmental policy development, insufficient evidence to the benefit that environmental
goods provide to society and to see if it cost–benefit analysis against environmental protection (Geary 226). They

Essay on Media Portray of Environmental Issues
The way that media has portrayed environmental issues has changed radically in the past few years. Environmental issues often aren`t
considered newsworthy unless something large scale occurs with a notable impact on everyday life. The BP oil spill in 2010 made front pages
world wide, there was a sudden push for the rescue of marine life and a general disgust for the condition of the Gulf Coast. An outpouring of
awareness came of this tragedy and mass media diligently informed audiences of every detail as the following cleanup events unfolded. Most
environmental news is not front–page material. The media gets the ultimate say in what is deemed as important.
The typical newspaper reader does no read every single article, but rather skims...show more content...
Media draws from various sources to gather facts and assemble stories for their readership. When a story comes out about a new scientific
discovery or an impending extinction of a species, the source must be considered. In a paper by Jeremy Corbett entitled "Testing Public
Uncertainty of Science" he discusses how newspapers especially just don't have the manpower to go straight to the scientific source. Media often
rely on information sourced from governmental and private entities rather than cutting edge scientific information. This allows them to provide
information that is easily understood and likely widely accepted. Corbett gives the example of a magazine that cites scientific reports but changes
their story constantly: cell phones cause cancer, no they don`t, then months later they are back to the initial assumption.
Awareness does not necessarily lead to change. Just because an environmental issue is brought to light doesn't mean its going to pull at everyone's`
heart strings and convince them to act. News affects everyone a little differently and some indicating factors include education level and interest
in local, national, and international news. (Schafer, 2010, pp. 11–65) A survey cited in an article by Fredrick Saunders showed that in 2011, 70
percent of people who follow international news say that global warming is a serious threat, compared to 35 percent of those surveyed who do not

Environmental Stewardship And The Environment
The environment is a reflection of the individuals that occupy it. The quality of the environment is the result of the choices and actions that have
been made by the occupants. It is the population 's responsibility to validate that the activities that are taking place are environmentally responsible
and not harmful to its people. It is extremely important to sustain the environment and its natural resources for the future generations. Therefore,
environmental stewardship is the responsible use and protection of the natural resources and environment through conservation, ecological,
recycling, regeneration, and restoration practices. There are practices that are put into place to increase the environmental stewardship, which
include the efficiency of using resources, reducing the waste, and providing an efficient and a healthy work environment. However, the three most
important concepts are the efficiency, ecologically, and healthy. Efficiency is using the minimum required resources while producing the
minimum amount of waste. Ecologically refers to recycled and non–toxic products and healthy refers to generating the least amount of noise,
visual, and physical pollution. It is essential to implement an environmental stewardship regime; there are many benefits of these implementations
such as economic benefits, human health benefits, and conservation and protection of the environment itself. In Northern Canada, the boreal
forest lies on gigantic tar sands stores and the crude

Environmental Justice Reflection
"The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once
beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish," said Pope Francis, to political leaders (Encyclical Letter Laudato Si, 2015). This statement
has brought the world's attention to the serious problems of pollution and climate crisis, especially communities in poverty. In 2017, there were
six hurricanes worldwide, three of which became major hurricanes as a result of climate change. Despite the natural disasters that resemble climate
change, anti–environmentalists continue to advocate the idea of slashing funds for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These events and
environmental justice course challenged the way I saw the earth and environmental justice. Given these points, this paper presents my reflection
of the course in the following topics, environmental destruction, Trump's decision on cutting the funds for EPA, and a book that I read called
Women and Nature.
Environmental Justice course, consisted of many activities that enhanced my understanding of environmental justice and challenged the way I
saw the environment. Prior to this course, I remember taking science classes in high school that elaborated on pollution, sea–level rise, and
Greenhouse gases, yet I did not understand the bigger picture. Dr. Karen Malpede, presented various environmental justice topics, including, but
not limited to, the Sixth Extinction, Ecofeminism, Capitalism, and exploitation of natural resources. These topics strengthened my understanding
of the cause and effect of the environmental catastrophes that are due to human activities. To illustrates this cause and effect, I analyzed
hurricanes and the formation and intensity of hurricanes occur when warm temperatures rise. Wildfires, also occur when temperatures elevate. In
fact, the one of the causes that led to the California Fires, was high rise temperatures. Moving forward, I find myself watching the news
pertaining to climate crisis, not only do I understand the information, but I can construct my own opinion based on what I have learned. Equally,
I have microscopically become involved in politics. I try to become as

The Protection Of The Environment
Introduction
Information and public participation play an important role in the protection of the environment. To that end they have become rights which are
protected internationally, continentally and domestically, ensuring that all citizens and organizations are able to play an active role in the
management of the environmental at all levels. By enabling public participation, governments are inevitably providing transparency in governance
and therefore reinforcing the legislative and institutional safeguards that have been put in place to protect the environment. It is important that
some level of transparency is available regarding environmental decisions in order to allow the public be aware of decision–making procedures, as

Under Principle 10, public participation is a creature of three distinct requirements Firstly, there is a recognition that participation does not occur in
a vacuum; rather, it is facilitated by a healthy understanding of the current state of the environment. The Rio Declaration recognized that "at the
national level, each individual shall have appropriate access to information concerning the environment that is held by public authorities,
including information on hazardous materials and activities in their communities ."
As such, there is a responsibility on governments to make available information on the environment and the current risks faced to the citizens. The
Rio Declaration states that "states shall facilitate and encourage public awareness and participation by making information widely available" .
This includes educating local communities as to the environmental risks they specifically face and their sources. It also means providing an
adequate mechanism for governmental bodies to provide this information.
Secondly when the public is fully aware of the status of their environment, then citizens and interest groups should be provided with "the
opportunity to participate in the decision making–process ". Individuals and organizations should have a say in the drafting of legislation,
regulation and guidelines.

Sustainable development that allows the present generation to meet our current needs, without compromising the ability of future generations to

Many people in the community are suffering from polluted air, especially children because it is aggravating their asthma. Asthma status indicated
as an outcome of the complicated gene – environmental interactions. As Klinnert, (2008) stated that, the genetic based immune system has a
significant role in developing and determining of all asthma stages in allergic children who have reactions to environmental exposures (Klinnert,
2008). Triggers are everywhere in our environment, at home and school (indoor or outdoor), and has to vary reaction among children. As the EPA,
(2012), rightly points out that, the Environmental trigger has an important factor that contributes to asthma symptoms and severity include
irritants which aggravated by tobacco smoke (ETS) and pesticide, exposures to certain chemical fumes, gases, or vapors or dust and exposure to
weather changes or air pollution. There are many children with asthma having allergens triggers. Allergens environmental substances include
pollen from trees, grasses, flowers, fumes and cockroaches, mold and mildew, dust mites, animal dander (skin flakes and saliva) and paint and

Taking a holistic approach to saving the earth, many of today's modern day conservationists focus on everything from pollution and energy usage
to ecological health and peaceful coexistence with the animal kingdom. In other words, the same ideals are being shared by what is commonly

groups working in the name of these ideals calls themselves Green Peace.
Water conservation can be defined as (a) any beneficial reduction in water loss, use or waste as well as the preservation of water quality, (b) a
reduction in water use accomplished by implementation of water conservation or water efficiency measures or, (c) improved water management
practices that reduce or enhance the beneficial use of water. A water conservation measure is an action, behavioural change, device, technology,
or improved design or process implemented to reduce water loss, waste, or use. Water efficiency is a tool of water conservation. That results in
more efficient water use and thus reduces water demand. The value and cost–effectiveness of a water efficiency measure must be evaluated in
relation to its effects on the use and cost of other natural resources (e.g. Energy or chemicals). Water can be conserved in a lot of ways and most
of us are aware of those means. It is our duty to actually implement those in our daily life.

compared to just one. Before completing any work for this course, my definition of environmental science would have been, the study of elements
of the environment such as climate, soil, and water. I also would have thought that the term environmentalism meant simply protecting the
environment. The difference between environmental science and environmentalism is that environmental science is the study of the environment

Essay About Environmental Protection

  • 1. The importance of the environment appears when many disconcerting events throughout the years have emerged: tsunami and flooding, drought and starving, pollution, declining animal populations and many others. Looking behind these events is make us realize that we have caused irreversible damaged, through our daily behaviors. We now live in a modern, consumerist and largely urban existence throughout the developed world and we consume a lot of natural resources every day. ENVS course focuses on understanding cause and effect of social, economic and environmental impacts between our need and our product technologically and economically, and how to protect the environments in which we and others live. In ENVS class we do not learn just about the environment, but also about our health as a society in ensuring that no people or areas of life suffer as a result of, and also about examining the longer–term effects of the human activities and asking questions about how it improved and to ensure the quality of life for this and future generations. Teaching students about sustainability have been very important. It develops the knowledge, values, and worldviews required to make certain that there's enough for everyone, forever. It's different to other learning areas as it focuses on protecting natural environments and creating an ecologically and socially just world through informed action. • 2. Environmental Science Essay Environmental Fundamentals Laura Jackson Env/100 April 8, 2013 JOHN ENSWORTH Environmental Fundamentals Introduction Environmental science is defined as the study of the environment and the interconnecting systems it contains, furthermore, the way people interact with their natural surroundings and use natural resources (wise geek, 2013). Scientist in this field is highly interdisciplinary and extremely diverse, for example, a scientist might study volcanoes or climate change. This essay will cover the following; the definition of environmental science, the relationship between science and technology and how it affects environmental problems; the concept of environmental sustainability and why it should be studied; how human...show more content... Environmental Sustainability Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely preserving the life support systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally. Human Values affecting Society The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species extinction has remained at one species per million per year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on earth by the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period (mindfully.org, 2013). As individuals, we obtain our

  • 4. Importance Of Protecting The Environment Essay Our environment undoubtedly has many things we can use to benefit our everyday lives. Even if our environment is not in tip–top shape, we need to start taking care of it better. If we don't many things will happen. These things include plants dying, animals going extinct, air becoming polluted, coral reefs dying, and water rapidly coming contaminated. Another problem our environment has to face, overcome, or adapt too is Global Warming. Global Warming has and will continue to impact our environment worldwide if we do not begin taking immediate action and do something to protect our environment. Protecting our environment is indeed the first action that should be taken. Protecting the environment should take place locally and globally in my opinion. There are many things that our local environment could do that would have have a tremendous impact on our environment that genuinely would not take oodles of effort. A few of these could be as easy as recycling soda cans, old school or work papers, and glass bottles and taking them to a local recycling center. When you recycle you are reusing things or making them into new things. Two more examples would be hosting or participating in a highway clean up, or planting a community garden at a park. Globally, humans are responsible for Greenhouse Gasses, pollution, and fossil fuel shortages. Globally, if everyone pitched in just a little bit, greenhouse gas emissions could go down drastically. The way we could cut these emissions Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Environmental Protection Agency Essay 1)When was the environmental protection agency (EPA) formed? –1970 What events prompted its formation? –The U.S. was rocked by a series of waste land toxic materials, the earth's automatic, self–cleansing, life support systems became increasingly threatened and consequently people from all walks of life and from every part of the political spectrum were expressing their anxieties on the streets and this happened to b the largest public American demonstration ever seen in America. Hence prompting President Richard Nixon transmitted Reorganization Plan No. 3 to the United States Congress by executive order, creating the EPA as a single, independent agency from a number of smaller arms of different federal agencies. 2)How did...show more content... –The citizen suit provision of the Clean Water Actis an important tool to protect and improve rivers, creeks, streams, and wetlands especially as state agencies may not have the resources to conduct regular water quality monitoring on every water body. Citizen involvement in monitoring and reporting pollution problems is key to watershed protection; hereby helping the government enforce the laws. 4)The expression "canary in the coal mine" means an early warning of danger. (Coal miners would carry canaries or small animals with them into mines to detect deadly but odorless and tasteless methane gas.) a)To what does the expression "canary in the coal mine' apply in poisoned waters? I will say that as much as the expression "Canary in the coal mine" implies an early warning of danger in mines so does it in water too. In this case the fish directly helps us know the extent to which our ecological sphere is damaged, and helps humans to take the necessary precautions to

  • 7. During and since World War II the United States has produced millions of tons of toxic wastes during the manufacturing and processing of products. These hazards were often left abandoned and no one really paid attention to their effect on our environment. In the 1980s Congress established a Superfund Program. It was left for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to administer thesuperfund program, to find these hazardous sites, investigate and determine the worst ones, and then clean up those sites across the United States. Over 15,000 sites were identified and 1,400 were named to the National Priorities List (NPL). One of the towns was Picher Oklahoma named in the Tar Creek Superfund Site. Picher and the neighboring towns covering over a 50 square mile area became known as the Tar Creek Superfund Site and were officially put on the NPL on 8 September 1983 ("challenge posed to children's health by mixtures of toxic waste: the Tar Creek Superfund Site as a case–study," n.d.). All of the information was finally out. The hazards were known. It was time for the clean up to begin. Where do you begin when a problem is this large? The Environmental Protection Agency was tasked to take thelead in the clean–up. It was easy to identify the hazards: contaminated water, contaminated soil, possible area collapse, and the lead laced chat piles. To begin the Superfund site cleanup the EPA started with monitoring of the surface water, acid mine water discharge, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Caring About Our Environment Essay Caring About Our Environment Improving and maintaining the earth's environment is becoming a more important task every day of our lives. Due to ignorance and frequent carelessness, this important task is quickly becoming a critical one. For this reason, I took it upon myself to construct a strategic plan to enlighten my peers to the problems of our environment. I did this in hopes that it would encourage everyone to act responsibly towards improving and maintaining the environment. With ongoing threats to the earth's water supply, atmosphere, and surface, I found it necessary to devise a method of environmental enlightenment. I plan to apply this method at my place of academic study, The University. If supported by the faculty...show more content... I recently discovered that one cheeseburger takes more than 700 gallons of water to produce (includes water consumed by cows, water used to irrigate the cornfields that feed the cows, and the water used to produce the beef and cheese). When considering the millions of cheeseburgers that are consumed worldwide everyday, it is evident that the earth's water supply is declining rapidly. Due to air pollution, theozone layer is also being consumed at an extreme rate. Its arch nemesis is the various fumes from cars and factories. Scientists estimate that each 1% drop in ozone levels causes a 3 to 6% rise in skin cancer cases. Since the ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet and other high–energy radiation from penetrating to the earth's surface, this is a crisis that has to be rectified. The ozone's depletion has dropped to a level so thin that if we brought it down to Earth, it would only be as deep as the thickness of three dimes. The only positive outlook concerning this matter is that the ozone has the ability to reconstruct itself when UV–C rays break the bond of O2. Single oxygen atoms combine with O2 to form ozone (UV–B rays limit this process still yet). This evidence shows that the world is in dire need of an environmental resurrection. In order for this to occur and be successful, it would require an effort by every individual nation of our world. My resolution requires that The University of South Carolina Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Environmental Law Essays ENVIRONMENTAL LAW 1. To what extent have the principles of environmental law been incorporated in the Environmental Protection Act 2000 20TH MARCH, 2004. Introduction The environment is made up of the physical, biological and human elements. These three are different facets of one and the same environment. Not only in recent years, the human environment has begun to impinge and burden the physical and biological environment. It is only in recent years that the public has been made aware of the seriousness of the matter. This awareness, has, not only led to changes in local legislation, but also to changes in the way the problem is approached. It is useless trying to solve environmental problems on a national basis as the...show more content... Sovereignty over natural resources and the environment in general In modern international law, permanent sovereignty over natural resources has come to entail duties as well as rights. There has been an evolution of permanent sovereignty from a political claim to a principle of international law. This principle led to debates on people's rights, nationalization, and environmental conservation. The right of peoples and nations to permanent sovereignty over their natural wealth and resources must be exercised in the interest of their national development and of the well–being of the people of the State concerned. The promotion of this principle was the natural manifestation of the ever–present fear of the developing countries, that the Western World would continue exploiting their natural resources without conceding them a just and equitable share. This principle[2] was implemented in our law and is found in both sections 3 and 4[3]. The principle states that the environment is a res communis and thus should be enjoyed by all. The government as the bonus pater familias is entrusted with the protection of this resource. Section 3 is the best example of this principle, stating: "It shall be the duty of everyone together with the government to protect the environment and to assist in the taking of preventive and remedial measures to protect the environment and manage natural resources in a sustainable manner[4]." • 10. Annie Leonard, a sustainability advocate, once said, "There is no such thing as "away". When we throw anything away it must go somewhere." In other words, the waste that is disposed of within every household has to go somewhere. Although this quote appears to be insignificant, it showcases how my mindset on environmental sustainability within my life professionally and personally has changed after taking this course. The readings and lectures presented by Professor Birkenholtz, Lucero, McCall, Siva, and Viswanathan have allowed me to have a holistic way of thinking relating to how my actions affect the wellbeing of the environment. This new way of thinking will allow me to foster a green transformation towards sustainability by making an impact with my decisions throughout my career and personal endeavours. In other words, my vision personally and professionally in regard to sustainability is to make an impact where I can, and bring awareness to the importance of sustainability. Environmental Sustainability is a complex issue, but the importance should not be understated. Before taking this course, sustainability was something that caught my interest. However, I ignored the idea that an impact could be made on a personal level through my professional and personal experiences and decisions. Professor Siva's lectures on the exposed me to the validity of the argument for sustainability. The society today takes water for granted because the idea of water being present is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Should we keep the Environmental Protection Agency? The EPA is the environmental protection agency and they deal with keeping the environment clean and they enforce the laws to keep it clean. The agency was put together by President Richard Nixon on December 2, 1970. He put them together to enforce the fines, sanctions and other measures. Their headquarters is in Washington D.C.The Environmental Protection Agency always has people wondering where they get the money, what they will change, and how they help the world. Bill Clinton elected the head of the environmental protection agency when he was elected and he chose Florida's secretary of environmental regulations. To start off, President Bill Clinton elected Carol Browner to run the environmental protection agency (Carol M. Browner 50). Carol Browner sticks up to what she feels is important for today's society. To continue, Browner won her role by getting her respect gained in 2 cases as Florida's secretary of environmental regulations (Carol M. Browner 50). Browner was standing her ground when the federal government went after Florida to restore the everglades. Lastly, Roosevelt and Pinchot were focused on the wise and efficient use of natural resources (Geary 226). Roosevelt and Pinchot did whatever they needed to get more information on natural resources. Bill Clinton chose Carol M. Browner because he knew that she would do her best in this position and with all of her experience for this position and also Roosevelt wanted to make the environment better for today's society and also for all of the societies to still come. The Environmental Protective Agency works hard to make the environment better and they also work hard to get enough money to fund it. According to multiple reports President Lyndon Johnson, "took an interest in preservationist issues" (Girard 100). President Johnson was interested in the Environmental Protection Agency and wanted to do whatever it was to be a part of it. To continue, a case of environmental policy development, insufficient evidence to the benefit that environmental goods provide to society and to see if it cost–benefit analysis against environmental protection (Geary 226). • 12. Essay on Media Portray of Environmental Issues The way that media has portrayed environmental issues has changed radically in the past few years. Environmental issues often aren`t considered newsworthy unless something large scale occurs with a notable impact on everyday life. The BP oil spill in 2010 made front pages world wide, there was a sudden push for the rescue of marine life and a general disgust for the condition of the Gulf Coast. An outpouring of awareness came of this tragedy and mass media diligently informed audiences of every detail as the following cleanup events unfolded. Most environmental news is not front–page material. The media gets the ultimate say in what is deemed as important. The typical newspaper reader does no read every single article, but rather skims...show more content... Media draws from various sources to gather facts and assemble stories for their readership. When a story comes out about a new scientific discovery or an impending extinction of a species, the source must be considered. In a paper by Jeremy Corbett entitled "Testing Public Uncertainty of Science" he discusses how newspapers especially just don't have the manpower to go straight to the scientific source. Media often rely on information sourced from governmental and private entities rather than cutting edge scientific information. This allows them to provide information that is easily understood and likely widely accepted. Corbett gives the example of a magazine that cites scientific reports but changes their story constantly: cell phones cause cancer, no they don`t, then months later they are back to the initial assumption. Awareness does not necessarily lead to change. Just because an environmental issue is brought to light doesn't mean its going to pull at everyone's` heart strings and convince them to act. News affects everyone a little differently and some indicating factors include education level and interest in local, national, and international news. (Schafer, 2010, pp. 11–65) A survey cited in an article by Fredrick Saunders showed that in 2011, 70 percent of people who follow international news say that global warming is a serious threat, compared to 35 percent of those surveyed who do not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Environmental Stewardship And The Environment The environment is a reflection of the individuals that occupy it. The quality of the environment is the result of the choices and actions that have been made by the occupants. It is the population 's responsibility to validate that the activities that are taking place are environmentally responsible and not harmful to its people. It is extremely important to sustain the environment and its natural resources for the future generations. Therefore, environmental stewardship is the responsible use and protection of the natural resources and environment through conservation, ecological, recycling, regeneration, and restoration practices. There are practices that are put into place to increase the environmental stewardship, which include the efficiency of using resources, reducing the waste, and providing an efficient and a healthy work environment. However, the three most important concepts are the efficiency, ecologically, and healthy. Efficiency is using the minimum required resources while producing the minimum amount of waste. Ecologically refers to recycled and non–toxic products and healthy refers to generating the least amount of noise, visual, and physical pollution. It is essential to implement an environmental stewardship regime; there are many benefits of these implementations such as economic benefits, human health benefits, and conservation and protection of the environment itself. • 14. Environmental Justice Reflection "The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish," said Pope Francis, to political leaders (Encyclical Letter Laudato Si, 2015). This statement has brought the world's attention to the serious problems of pollution and climate crisis, especially communities in poverty. In 2017, there were six hurricanes worldwide, three of which became major hurricanes as a result of climate change. Despite the natural disasters that resemble climate change, anti–environmentalists continue to advocate the idea of slashing funds for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These events and environmental justice course challenged the way I saw the earth and environmental justice. Given these points, this paper presents my reflection of the course in the following topics, environmental destruction, Trump's decision on cutting the funds for EPA, and a book that I read called Women and Nature. Environmental Justice course, consisted of many activities that enhanced my understanding of environmental justice and challenged the way I saw the environment. Prior to this course, I remember taking science classes in high school that elaborated on pollution, sea–level rise, and Greenhouse gases, yet I did not understand the bigger picture. Dr. Karen Malpede, presented various environmental justice topics, including, but not limited to, the Sixth Extinction, Ecofeminism, Capitalism, and exploitation of natural resources. These topics strengthened my understanding of the cause and effect of the environmental catastrophes that are due to human activities. To illustrates this cause and effect, I analyzed hurricanes and the formation and intensity of hurricanes occur when warm temperatures rise. Wildfires, also occur when temperatures elevate. In fact, the one of the causes that led to the California Fires, was high rise temperatures. Moving forward, I find myself watching the news pertaining to climate crisis, not only do I understand the information, but I can construct my own opinion based on what I have learned. Equally, I have microscopically become involved in politics. I try to become as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. The Protection Of The Environment Introduction Information and public participation play an important role in the protection of the environment. To that end they have become rights which are protected internationally, continentally and domestically, ensuring that all citizens and organizations are able to play an active role in the management of the environmental at all levels. By enabling public participation, governments are inevitably providing transparency in governance and therefore reinforcing the legislative and institutional safeguards that have been put in place to protect the environment. It is important that some level of transparency is available regarding environmental decisions in order to allow the public be aware of decision–making procedures, as well the...show more content... Under Principle 10, public participation is a creature of three distinct requirements Firstly, there is a recognition that participation does not occur in a vacuum; rather, it is facilitated by a healthy understanding of the current state of the environment. The Rio Declaration recognized that "at the national level, each individual shall have appropriate access to information concerning the environment that is held by public authorities, including information on hazardous materials and activities in their communities ." As such, there is a responsibility on governments to make available information on the environment and the current risks faced to the citizens. The Rio Declaration states that "states shall facilitate and encourage public awareness and participation by making information widely available" . This includes educating local communities as to the environmental risks they specifically face and their sources. It also means providing an adequate mechanism for governmental bodies to provide this information. Secondly when the public is fully aware of the status of their environment, then citizens and interest groups should be provided with "the opportunity to participate in the decision making–process ". By organizing a Tree Plantation Project (TPP) we can plant more trees that produce our oxygen. I will be working with the Schools and the Communities to educate how trees help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing such pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide, and daily environmental activities. The current problems are losing CO2, building homes where it is not needed and destroying the rainforest. The animals are been force into the city due to them destroying their habitats. The overall impact is that by knocking down the trees we are depriving our...show more content... The nursery will hold smaller trees that can be planted among the communities. The nursery will be checked on a weekly basis and the responsible party will be taking inventory of what's in the nursery. Acquiring planting tools will be available for every planting project which includes rakes, water hoses, shovels, soil etc. Involving the communities and Schools to ask questions or have environmental discussions, the meeting will be held twice a month. The TPP environment discussion and planning will be held and the end of the every month. Every spring and summer will have a plant sale, 100 plants between the two seasons to for the TPP project. Tree Plantation Project Tree Plantation Project By applying this action plan, I want to make the schools and the community aware of what's going on in the environment involving trees. I would expect by putting together 10 environmental action plan activities that would build a lasting and informational plantation that will be available to the community; and with the knowledge and the right tools to have healthy trees in the communities. I plan to share my experience with other organization and with my communities on why it

It can make the future generations live and work in peace and environmental protection. Sustainable development has the connection with environmental protection, but it cannot be equated with environmental protection. environmental protection is one of the important aspect of environmental protection. The core of sustainable development is development, but the premise of social and economic development is controlling of population strictly, improving the quality of people, protecting the environment and using the resources permanently. There are 5 main points of sustainable development nowadays: 1. the support of development, 2. the cleanness of water, 3. the green trade, 4. the exploitation of energy, 5. the protection of environment. Specifically, the support of development is that developed countries enlarge the economic assistance to the developing countries. The proportion of the assistance should reach 0.7% of GDP. 2. the cleanness of water means that economizing the water for half of the population who are short of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Identify relevant aspects of exposure to the population within the community, including who is exposed and the potential for contamination of environmental media (food, water, air), and likely exposure pathways. Many people in the community are suffering from polluted air, especially children because it is aggravating their asthma. Asthma status indicated as an outcome of the complicated gene – environmental interactions. As Klinnert, (2008) stated that, the genetic based immune system has a significant role in developing and determining of all asthma stages in allergic children who have reactions to environmental exposures (Klinnert, 2008). Triggers are everywhere in our environment, at home and school (indoor or outdoor), and has to vary reaction among children. As the EPA, (2012), rightly points out that, the Environmental trigger has an important factor that contributes to asthma symptoms and severity include irritants which aggravated by tobacco smoke (ETS) and pesticide, exposures to certain chemical fumes, gases, or vapors or dust and exposure to weather changes or air pollution. There are many children with asthma having allergens triggers. Allergens environmental substances include pollen from trees, grasses, flowers, fumes and cockroaches, mold and mildew, dust mites, animal dander (skin flakes and saliva) and paint and cleaning fluid (EPA, 2012).

Broad Topic: Environmental Protection/Nature Conservation Narrow topic: Animal protection Research Question: What are some of the measures that need to be implemented by the Jamaican Government to protect endangered animal species? Introduction: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be measured by the way its animals are treated." This proclamation that is attributed to the great Mahatma Gandhi has frighteningly opposed the graphic and upsetting images of slaughtered, abused and neglected animals that are so often seen in newspapers and on social media. Deforestation, burning and bulldozing of their habitat must be prevented or minimized. Moreover, the government can construct more national parks, wildlife preserves and nature reserves so that endangered species can be free from negative human interference. These places allow endangered animal to have a suitable habitat, which will accelerate their survival rate. All animal life is important and worth protecting because they help to maintain an equilibrium in the ecosystem. II.Secondly, teaching animal welfare in schools should be employed as the primary tool to execute protection of endangered animals in our Jamaican society; since not everyone is aware that some animals are at risk of extinction. A.Teaching animal welfare will educate the active and passive abusers about animal protection so that they can implement better measures to protect endangered species. B.According to Phillips (2009) teaching animal welfare in schools will result in an improvement in animal wellbeing. Thus, the use of education is an effective avenue to achieve an improvement in the treatment and care of endangered

Taking a holistic approach to saving the earth, many of today's modern day conservationists focus on everything from pollution and energy usage to ecological health and peaceful coexistence with the animal kingdom. In other words, the same ideals are being shared by what is commonly deemed the ecology movement, green movement, peace movement and environmental movement. It's no coincidence that one of the most famous groups working in the name of these ideals calls themselves Green Peace. Water conservation can be defined as (a) any beneficial reduction in water loss, use or waste as well as the preservation of water quality, (b) a reduction in water use accomplished by implementation of water conservation or water efficiency measures or, (c) improved water management practices that reduce or enhance the beneficial use of water. A water conservation measure is an action, behavioural change, device, technology, or improved design or process implemented to reduce water loss, waste, or use. Water efficiency is a tool of water conservation. That results in more efficient water use and thus reduces water demand. The value and cost–effectiveness of a water efficiency measure must be evaluated in relation to its effects on the use and cost of other natural resources (e.g. Energy or chemicals). Water can be conserved in a lot of ways and most of us are aware of those means. It is our duty to actually implement those in our daily life. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 24. Statement Of Purpose: AP Environmental Science I signed up to take AP Environmental Science this year because I was more interested in taking it than expanding on solely biology or chemistry. This course includes several different fields of study which is why I thought it would be very interesting and I would learn about several subjects compared to just one. Before completing any work for this course, my definition of environmental science would have been, the study of elements of the environment such as climate, soil, and water. I also would have thought that the term environmentalism meant simply protecting the environment. The difference between environmental science and environmentalism is that environmental science is the study of the environment which runs more tests and experiments Get more content on HelpWriting.net
