As a kid I was never an outgoing person, I had no problem with being a follower or even
being second to anything. Reason being was that I thought that you had to be born with the
2. qualities of a leader to be one. This way of thinking has limited me ever since elementary school
till the start of the TLC program.
I would have to say that the TypeFocus lecture and results impacted me the most. My
personality type was an INFJ and at first I thought that companies would only accept applicants
who were extroverts, but that wasn't the case. According to that lecture, big companies do
actually need a person in a team to be able to step back and observe a situation rather than being
gung-ho about every idea. What was really comforting about that day in class was seeing and
hearing other people in the class give out their results. It made me feel like I wasn't the only
person who struggled with meeting and talking to new people. This gave me the inspiration to
push myself to trying to step out of my comfort zone and break down my barriers.
My main SMART goal was that I would be able to talk comfortably in public. I don't
think I have fully achieved this goal but I have improved if anything. Before I’ve always dreaded
asking questions during class because of the fear of asking a “dumb” questions. But I’ve been
trying to be more engaged in lectures and I feel that I’m getting more out of each lesson. I feel
like that the TLC has helped me progress to my career goals by helping me push myself. Because
of listening to lectures, I’ve been able to step out of my comfort zone to condition myself for the
professional world. Almost everything that was taught during class in TLC was relatable in other
classes due to the fact that it's all about your thought process in situations. For example, in group
projects instead of sitting in the back I’m trying to express my own ideas now to collaborate
more with my partners.
For my civic engagements, I’ve been volunteering more for my church in orange county.
The children ministry was always needing help so I thought it would be easy hours. At first I was
in it only for credit, but as time went on it felt pretty good to be more engaged in the community.
3. Now helping out is not a burden every sunday and I kinda look forward to it now. For my
Campus engagements I was going to the movie events mainly with people from my dorm. I’ve
never been to any events in my highschool so I only associated that school with the boring day to
day classes. So being at these events was really refreshing, It made me realize that CSUSM was
more than just a school. These events showed me that the staff here really made an effort to let
the students here feel like they are at home and I really appreciate that.
The TLC program has really helped me understand the person who I am. For instance,
I’ve always struggled with thought of individuality and what makes me so special. But because
of all the presentations I listened to on fridays, it helped me realize my strengths and the things I
need to work on. For example, one of the things that was talked about was “Beyond The
Handshake”. It helped me realize that I didn't really feel comfortable of talking to a person while
keeping eye contact. I always tended to look away every time it was my turn to respond in the
conversation. I was taught that eye contact was a sign of confidence and sincerity and I’ve been
trying to implement that whenever I get into a conversation now. The program for me was
honestly a blessing because it helped me push my boundaries and explore myself as a person. It
gave me a reason to try and truly better myself to prepare for the real working world. I just want
to thank Professor Nolan for being so friendly and helping me realize that I shouldn't be nervous
when talking to professionals because they are just people like me. In conclusion, I would
recommend every freshman to take the TLC program because it really does prepare you for
whatever career you want to pursue.
