2. The City of Barrie planned to expand Centennial
Park by realigning Lakeshore Drive onto the former
CN railway right of way. This initiative will increase
the green space, pathways and parking along the
City of Barrie’s waterfront.
LAKESHORE DRIVE RECONSTRUCTION AND UTILITY SUPPORT ON HELICAL PILES
BARRIE, ONTARIO
THE PROBLEM
Deposits of organic material (peat) and 20 to 45 metres of soft clay
required the design of culverts, stormceptors, sanitary and storm sewers
to be supported on reinforced concrete grade beams and helical piles.
THE SOLUTION
Under the recommendation of the City of Barrie and their engineering
team, EBS Geostructural was contacted to design and install test piles after
repeated test pile failures by the original “low bid” helical pile contractor
(non Chance Helical Pile material).
EBS installed four test Chance Helical Piles next to the original helical pile
contractor’s test piles. All four of the EBS designed Chance Helical Piles
met the movement criteria at test load. EBS was awarded the contract to
install 670 helical piles using their design.
The failures of the “low bid” helical pile contractor delayed the project
by approximately eight weeks. This delay cost the city and the structural
engineer more time than anticipated due to the extra review required.
