This document discusses the importance of having a driving for work programme in place to manage risks associated with employees driving for work. It notes that employers have a duty of care to ensure employee safety when driving for work. The document then summarizes the key elements an effective driving for work programme should include such as: online driver and vehicle checks, online safety training modules, and on-road driver training and certification. Financial benefits of implementing such a programme include reduced costs from fewer accidents while non-financial benefits include improved road safety and employee well-being. It concludes by outlining ISM ProDrive's three step process for developing a customised driving for work solution for a business.

2. Driving for Work
Driving for work includes any person who drives on a road as part of their work either in:
• A vehicle provided by their employer; or
• Their own vehicle and receives an allowance or payment from their employer for distances driven.
Commuting to work is not generally classified as driving for work, except where the person’s journey starts from their home and they are travelling
to a work location that is not their normal place of work.
• The employer has a duty of care to ensure the safety of employees using the vehicle.
• Employers should have appropriate policies and procedures in place.
• You must, by law, manage the risks that may arise when you or your employees drive for work.
• Have systems in place to ensure that Driving for Work activities are road safety compliant.
• Promote and influence safe driving behaviour and actions by their employees.

3. Driving for Work
You will need a Driving for Work program in place for all:
• Company Car Drivers
• Grey Fleet Drivers (who use their own vehicle for work purposes, even occasionally)
As an employer, you should have a safety management system in place for managing all work related risks.
Driving for work risks should be managed as part of this system.
You must also make sure your employees are:
• Legally entitled to drive the vehicle they are using,
• Using a vehicle that is safe and roadworthy,
• Trained, competent and fit to drive their vehicle safely, and
• Using their vehicle safely.

European Transport Safety Council
Work-Related Road Risk Management 2014

maintenance through better driving standards

• Fewer missed orders and business opportunities
• Less chance of key employees being banned
from driving.

• Benefits contract tendering and business
development processes
• Road safety and corporate social
responsibility (CSR)

vehicle bearing a company logo can have a long lasting
negative impact on a company’s image. At the other end of
the scale, being recognised externally for performing well in
fleet safety can be an effective marketing tool”
The Importance of Risk Assessment
The report clearly states the practical importance of Risk
Assessment, particularly a Driver Risk Assessment and
Training Programme. It is also a basic requirement of EU
Legislation.
