1. The Emergency Preparedness and Environment Section strengthens
emergency response of the humanitarian system. Building on
its extensive preparedness experience, the Section takes a global
approach in setting standards for efficient emergency response
preparedness. It also coordinates international efforts to prepare
for and respond to environmental emergencies.
EPES promotes preparedness at the global level through the Sendai
Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the World
Humanitarian Summit and the CADRI Partnership.
Emergency Response Preparedness (ERP): The Section leads the
implementation of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) ERP
approach with OCHA country and regional offices and partners. The
ERP provides an overall framework for response preparedness aimed
at increasing the speed and volume of critical humanitarian assistance.
Specifically, EPES delivers training and technical support for the
implementation of the ERP.
Environment: The Joint United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP)/OCHA Environment Unit (JEU) is housed within EPES. By pairing
the environmental expertise of UNEP and the humanitarian response
networks coordinated by OCHA, the JEU ensures an integrated approach
in preparing for and responding to environmental emergencies.
