1.
2. I’ve been researching and looking into the implementation of
blues rock and blues-like techniques into post grunge rock over
the entire lifetime of the genre, from the start of the genre in
early-mid 1990’s until the present. Taking a look at;
The blues techniques used
How they’ve been modernized
And how modern techniques have also been implemented.
3. Most rock is influenced by blues, post grunge is no
exception. Post grunge started in the mid 1990’s after
the drop in popularity of grunge due to the death of
Kurt Cobain and the break-up of Nirvana.
Post grunge was a prominent genre from the mid 90’s
into the 2000’s and is still popular today with bands
like Foo Fighters (the “creators” of the genre), Creed
and Nickelback.
Post grunge opted to add in more commercially
acceptable qualities than grunge which lead to its
quick rise and prominence
4. Pentatonic scales. Notes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
The use of a 1, 4, 5 chord progression; the 1st, 4th, and
5th, chord of the key. In the key of A minor, for example,
that would be A, b, c, D, E, f, g.
A melody that is in a minor key played over the top of a
chord progression in a major key. This is done to give the
song a tense feeling
Legatos
› The bending of notes
› Sliding to notes
Staccato notes; quick and sharp notes.
Vibrato; shaking notes.
Rhythmic unity between instruments.
5. Social context
The lyrics are about the vocalist looking for inspiration;
looking all around, needing help to reinvent himself.
Techniques and conventions
Learn to fly features a few blues like techniques in the
original iteration like the use of the 1, 4, 5 chord progression
and minor of major melodies.
I opted to add more techniques through the use of the
melody being notated on guitar allowing me to add
bends, slides, and make the song more interesting in
general.
6. What’s It About?
Written in the late 90’s, still in the fairly
early days of post-grunge, the song is
mostly about the vocalist looking for
inspiration; looking all around,
needing help to reinvent himself.
Techniques
Minor melodies over major chords
A modern variation on the 1, 4, 5 chord progression.
Emphasis on combination of major and minor modes.
Bends
Slides
Rhythmic unity
Combinations of legato (smooth) and staccato (sharp)
rhythms.
7. My Own Spin
I threw my spin on the song by
playing the melody on the
guitar. Hear how.
Legatos
› Bends
› Slides
› Hammer-on
› Pull-off
8. Social Context
It’s about learning to live with a lost loved one even after you
lose your mind over it. The film clip depicts this with reference to
the last supper.
Techniques and conventions
The song uses minor over major melodies and high levels of
rhythmic unity. I’ve also added in other blues like techniques by
transposing the melody to the guitar with the use of blues-y
bends and slides.

10. My Spin
I put my spin on the song by using the
melody which is a running theme in my
songs. I added plenty of techniques into
it. Hear about it.
› Slow bends
› Fast, rigid slides
› Hard hammer-ons
› Smooth pull-offs
11. Social context
My composition doesn’t have any vocals so it doesn’t have
any social message of sorts. It’s heavily inspired by Foo
Fighters and their styles of play and form of song writing.
Techniques and conventions
It features a wide array of blues-like techniques including
Minor over major melodies
A modern variation on the 1, 4, 5 chord progression.
Emphasis on combination of major and minor modes.
Bends
Slides
Rhythmic unity
Combinations of legato and staccato rhythms.
12. What is it?
My composition has no real social
message as it has no lyrics, but I did aim to
have a song that was interesting to listen
to with both intense and softer at times.

13. My style
I used plenty of hammer-ons and pull-offs for
the lead while with the rhythm I focused on the
contrast between heavier and clean sections.

14. Social Context
The song is about a man who has made plenty of
mistakes in his life and only started to change when he
met the girl that is spoken about.
Techniques and conventions
The song uses plenty of soloing techniques like;
an extensive use of;
› Slides
› bends
The use of pentatonic minor scale
The song also incorporates some techniques present in
heavier rock like pinch harmonics and tap-ons.
15. What’s It About?
Written in the late 2000’s the song leans to
the heavier side of post grunge using
elements of hard rock and metal. The lyrics

mistakes in his life and only started to
change when he met the girl that is spoken
about.

own play style. Hear how.
