Editor's Notes

  1. Relationship to cultural competency - some differences/similarities between cultural and global competency. Working definition: cultural within a certain country/territory; global in different locations. Why is this distinction important?? – cultural attributes are often muted within a given location as people adopt to the dominant culture – more pronounced in their home location and may thus surprise you. However, also clearly linkages/synergies – focusing on one will help you with the other and vice versa.

Written, Verbal -  Lot’s of articles on things to remember – timezones  (when scheduling a call be clear about time zone; rotating them in on-going groups calls) and seasons are different (recognizing this, rotating globes etc…), reducing the use (or explaining) acronyms and colloquial expressions,  speaking slowly, etc… key here is practice so that it comes naturally or at least is at the forefront of your thinking. Being very conscious of this (after having worked internationally for over 30 years now) I can see how people progress along a spectrum – don’t notice at all; notice sometimes; are more consistent.  And little things make a big difference when engaging with other nationalities (especially if you come from a ‘dominant’ culture recognizing that yours is not the most important).   Nonverbal – Be very conscious of this, if you aren’t already.  Both what you are saying through your nonverbal communication and what others are telling you.  It can often tell you more than verbal communication, especially in cultures that aren’t transparent or where ‘saving face’ is an important value.   Social media – Some platforms (especially those that are ‘open’ i.e. you do not have to approve a follower like Twitter, Quora) are very international.  Can learn a lot from observing or engaging there (depending on your own goals). Or share your collections via YouTube channel, slideshare account, scoop.it
