I wrote this script as an exercise in Susan O’Conner’s game writing masterclass. The premise of the exercise was to choose any three different video game characters and write a scene where they are all stuck in an elevator together. There are a few skills exercised in this assignment, but I think my biggest takeaway was voice matching.

INT. LOBBY - MORNING
1 1
Aerith approaches the lone elevator in the office of a
sparsely decorated office building lobby. She does not notice
Morgana standing in front of the closed elevator door.
Aerith is wearing her signature outfit - red leather jacket
over a pink sundress and black boots - and has her braided
hair tied back with a pink bow. Morgana appears in his cat
form with a yellow collar.
Aerith pushes the call button for the elevator.
MORGANA (O.S.)
Mrow?
Aerith looks down and sees Morgana looking up at her.
AERITH
(Smiling)
Hello there, kitty. Are you waiting
for the elevator too?
MORGANA
Mrow!
Aerith giggles as she bends down to scratch Morgana behind
the ears. Morgana enjoys the petting. After a moment, the
elevator chimes its bell and the doors slide open. Aerith
gather herself and the pair walk inside.
Aerith pushes a button on the elevator console. She looks
down at Morgana and smiles again.
MORGANA
(Nodding his head)
Mroow.
The doors slide closed.
After a few moments, the elevator suddenly stops. The lights
above flicker. Aerith looks down at Morgana, who is looking
back up at her.
AERITH
(Concerned)
Was that you, kitty?
MORGANA
(Shaking his head)
Mrow!

2. 2.
Aerith tries pushing a button on the elevator console.
GLADOS
(Suddenly)
Hello.
AERITH
Ahh!
MORGANA
Ghost!
AERITH
Kitty?
The elevator falls still as Aerith and Morgana stare at each
other.
GLADOS
Are you two finished?
AERITH
(Ignoring GLaDOS)
Are you Cait Sith?
MORGANA
Nope! I'm Morgana and I am NOT a
cat.
GLADOS
Excuse me.
AERITH
Well, it certainly is nice to meet
you, Morgana. I'm Aerith.
GLADOS
Hey.
MORGANA
Well met, Aerith! And might I say,
that is quite the lovely name you
have.
A ceiling panel falls suddenly, narrowly missing Morgana. The
pair falls silent as they stare at the large piece of metal.
GLADOS
Wonderful.
AERITH
Excuse me, but what is this?
GLADOS

3. 3.
This is the Aperture Science
Vertically Mobile Testing
Laboratory, version two.
MORGANA
Testing Laboratory? And why version
two?
GLADOS
Yes, you have been randomly chosen
to perform a test in the name of
science. And version one combusted.
Horribly.
AERITH
Will you let us go?
GLADOS
Gladly, just as soon as you perform
one test. If at any point you wish
to end testing early, please press
this large, red button.
A panel in the elevator wall opens, and a red button slides
out.
AERITH
What does the button do?
GLADOS
It opens the bottom of the testing
chamber, sending its occupants at a
rate of 9.8 meters per second per
second several stories to the ground
below.
AERITH
Oh.
Morgana ignores the conversation, staring intently at the
red button. A desire to push the button is openly displayed
on his face.
AERITH
Okay, well, what's the first test?
GlaDOS does not respond. Morgana continues to stare at the
button. Aerith calls to GLaDOS several times, but there is no
response.
Several minutes pass.
AERITH
What are we going to do, Morgana?

4. 4.
Aerith notices that Morgana is poised to leap at the button.
She grabs him just in time.
MORGANA
Hey! Let me go!
AERITH
You were going to press the button!
That's dangerous!
MORGANA
It's a big, red button! It's
basically demanding to be pressed!
Morgana struggles in Aerith's grip, but she holds him still.
AERITH
Well I, for one, am tired of falling
down pits.
MORGANA
Let me go!
AERITH
Do you promise not to push the
button?
MORGANA
(After struggling a bit
longer)
Fine! I won't.
Aerith releases her grip. Morgana moves into the corner and
curls up, keeping one eye on the button. Aerith stands in
front of the button, facing Morgana, her hands placed firmly
on her hips.
Several more minutes pass. Aerith is leaning against the
wall. Morgana has not moved.
An hour passes. Aerith is sitting on the floor. Morgana is
curled up in Aerith's lap. Aerith is absently petting Morgana
and is lost in thought.
Another hour passes. Aerith has fallen asleep. Morgana,
realizing that his chance has come, slowly crawls out of
Aerith's lap and over to the button. He readies himself to
pounce at the button. Aerith wakes up just in time to see
Morgana about to jump.
AERITH
Kitty! No!
MORGANA

5. 5.
I'm sorry! I must!
Morgana leaps at the button and hits it squarely with his
head. The button depresses. A large buzzer is heard.
GLADOS
The test is complete.
Aerith stands, her face angry.
AERITH
But you said that the button would
open the bottom of the elevator!
GLADOS
I lied. Congratulations.
A hole opens in the top of the elevator, releasing a small
amount of confetti. The elevator door slides open.
GLADOS
Have a nice day.
Aerith stomps off the elevator, leaving Morgana behind.
MORGANA
Hey! Wait for me! I mean, mrow!
Morgana runs after her and the two disappear behind a corner.
The door slides close again.
