4. Please be safe If you have samples of an unlabeled substance, please…..FOR CRYING OUT LOUD- Ask the teacher for labeled samples before messing with it. Always wear appropriate safety gear during labs: goggles, gloves, etc. Always follow directions in a lab. Don’t do anything unless you have been instructed to do so.

5. Communicate a valid Conclusion 10 sixth graders are stuck in a room together for an hour. In the room there is some broccoli, some spinach, and some cupcakes. All 10 students are very hungry. After an hour, the students are covered in icing, and there are crumbs everywhere. The broccoli and spinach were untouched. What conclusions can you draw from this?

6. What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. UH, DUH!

7. Properties of Matter Physical Properties: Weight- Gravitational pull on an object Mass- The amount of matter in an object Volume- The amount of space an object takes up. Density- the amount of matter you can cram into a given space. Chemical Properties: Flammability- Will it burn or not? Corrosiveness- Will it rust or react with oxygen?

8. Physical Change-you can get it back A physical change occurs when the substance changes state but does not change its chemical composition. For example: water freezing into ice, cutting a piece of wood into smaller pieces, etc. The form or appearance has changed, but the properties of that substance are the same (i.e. it has the same melting point, boiling point, chemical composition, etc.)

9. Chemical change-you can’t get it back A chemical change occurs when a substance changes into something new. This occurs due to heating, chemical reaction, etc. You can tell a chemical change has occurred if the density, melting point or freezing point of the original substance changes. Many common signs of a chemical change can be seen (bubbles forming, mass changed, etc).

10. What is Energy Energy is the ability to get up out of bed in the morning and come to school……. Not really…..but kind of……..Energy is the ability to do work

17. Nuclear powerplant Atoms of Uranium are split. Some of the Uranium’s mass is converted to thermal energy. The thermal energy heats water to steam. The steam spins a turbine….yada-yada-yada

18. Hydroelectric power The energy from the movement of water is harnessed. The water pressure spins a turbine…..and you know the rest

19. Wind Energy The movement of wind is harnessed to create electricity. The wind spins a wheel and the movement creates electricity.

20. Biomass Using the energy stored in living things.

21. Geothermal energy Using the heat from the Earth’s core to create electricity- The heat is used to convert water to steam….steams spins the turbine and you know the rest.
