2. Caveats for
today
• I am going to share all my healthcare expertise. Which is
none. So don’t look here for that.
• Any opinions shared on the health aspects of this are
strictly mine.
• We’re primarily looking at training that is low-cost (or
free), and easy to get into. No PhD programs here.
• I will probably say a couple of “funny” things that could
be taken as inappropriate. And there’s nothing new
there.
• I am a Condescending, Opinionated,Arrogant Crotchety
Old Geek. But I take it as well as I dish it out.
• We will be emailing reminders and PDF attachments.

4. Takeaways
• Throughout this chat we’re going to try to identify
specific takeaways, or things you should be able to use
from this presentation. There will be two types:
• Brain. This is something you should think about
before you do anything.
• Brawn. This is something you should actually start
doing.
5. Agenda (until Derailed)
• Topic for the Day
• Business Perspective
• ProductivityTraining
• TechnicalTraining
• PersonalTraining
6. Topic for the
Day
• There’s no doubt that most people have more
time on their hands than usual. And it’s easy to
find non-productive things to waste it on.
• It’s time to invest…well, time. And maybe a little
$. In your employees. In yourself.
• This is a unique opportunity, one that will
hopefully never return.
8. Takeaway #1:
• How engaged is your workforce today (are they
still technically employees)?
• Set up realistic training goals. If possible,
include them on setting these goals.
• Be flexible in terms of what’s possible.
• Find ways to make it fun (contests, more carrots
and fewer sticks). We need less stress, not more!
11. Takeaway #2:
• Most training resources have free trial options.
• Don’t overanalyze the source of training or the
goal. Just shut up and learn something.
• If something isn’t right or effective, stop and
move on to something else. But only if you’ve
got something else to move on to.
12. Technical
Training
• TechTraining is often vendor dependent. Most major
vendors (ie, Microsoft,Google, Cisco) have their own
training, often at near free costs.
• Setting up a lab with trial products is often pretty easy
(in terms of getting the tools) and usually free.
• YouTube is your friend. And enemy. Read the
comments on the channels before diving.
• Look for industry best practices, especially if you’re
learning something new. Learning the “wrong” way isn’t
helpful. If you don’t know the product (yet), you don’t
know the wrong way. Surrender to the vendor…for now.
15. Takeaway #3:
• Focus on specific goals. Don’t generalize your
training topics.
• Hands on experience will always trump couch
potato learning.
• Consider building your own lab at home.
• Consider getting certified when applicable.
