What is a superstition? 
 Some believe that superstitions is any think that people 
believe that is based on myth, magic or illogical thought. 
 Superstitions are also known as old wives’ tales, legends, 
and traditions. They may involve animals, graveyards, ghosts, 
inanimate objects, or even other people.
Lucky Horseshoes: 
 Some people believe in order to bring good 
luck. A horseshoe hung in the bedroom will keep 
nightmares away. 
 This belief stems from the fact that a horse 
shoe has seven holes, which is considered to be a 
lucky number. 
 It is made of iron, so it can supposedly ward 
off evil spirits that may haunt you in your dreams.
God Bless You: 
Sixth century: 
 It was believed that sneeze 
expelled evil spirits from the 
body.  It was than later believed 
that your soul could escape 
your body though sneeze and 
that by saying, “GOD 
BLESS YOU” 
 During the sneezed at that time the heart momentarily 
stops so saying “GOD BLESS YOU” was a way of 
welcoming the person back to life.
 This superstition find it’s origin in the middles ages 
due to the misunderstand belief that single woman who 
associated themselves with many cats where actually 
witch who could become cats themselves.
Christians, at that time wanting to 
destroy all other religions from society, 
convinced people that black cats were 
demon.

its considered as evil. 
 In England black cats are believed to bring “GOOD LUCK”. 
 Some believe Cats can see spirits and can hence guard you 
against evil spirits.
 The Egyptians celebrated the birthday of 
their king. The Greek are said to have taken 
the idea from the Egyptians. 
 Lighting candles on a birthday cake 
originates from pagan beliefs in gods. People 
had believed that their gods lived in the sky 
among the stars. 
 If, all the candles are blown out in one 
breath, the wish will come true, and the 
person will have good luck throughout the 
year.
Four leaf clover: 
• Though the origin of wishing 
over a four-leaf clover is lost to 
olden times it has long been a 
symbol of good luck and fortune. 
It has been also used in some traditions for finding a 
husband or a wife. 
If a person eat this leaf than after first time who meet 
he/she is this future mate.
• “Find a penny, pick it up, and 
all day long you’ll have good 
luck.” 
(Middle time) when someone walked under 
ladder it was believed that he would sure face 
his/her own death by hanging.
Fingers crossed 
for 
good luck: 
To cross one’s fingers is a 
hand gesture commonly 
used for good luck.
Itchy Palms: 
Some people believe that 
 If the right palm itches, you will lose money, 
while an 
itchy left palm means that money is coming your 
way. 
 If both palm itches…you may want to go to a 
doctor for that.
 Friday the 13th has been a source of superstition ever since the 
19th century. 
 Many people will purposely avoid doing anything significant 
(like business meetings, socials, banquets, etc.) due to the 
belief that the day is cursed and its a source of ill fortune.
Hiccups: 
If you have hiccups it means 
someone is thinking of you. 
Money: 
Greeks believe that money attracts 
money, so never leave your pockets, 
purses or wallets completely empty 
and never completely empty your 
bank account. 
 Reverse your luck by turning three 
times counter clockwise.
Crows: One's bad, two's luck, three's health, four's wealth, 
five's sickness, six is death. 
Dishes: An old Mexican belief is if a dish or pot falls and 
breaks for no reason, someone in your family has died. 
Dog: If a dog howls 3 times, someone is going to die. 
Fish: A fish should always be eaten from the head toward the 
tail. Dream of fish: someone you know is pregnant.
 Many airports skip the 13th 
gate. 
 Airplanes have no 13th aisle. 
 Hospitals and hotels 
regularly have no room 
number 13.
 Italians omit the number 13 from their national lottery. 
 On streets in Florence, Italy, the house between number 12 
and 14 is addressed as 12 and a half. 
 Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue. 
 In France, socialites known as the quatorziens (fourteens) 
once made themselves available as 14th guests to keep a 
dinner party from an unlucky fate.
 Many triskaidekaphobia, as those who fear the unlucky 
integer are known, point to the ill-fated mission to the moon, 
Apollo 13. 
 If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil's 
luck .

 Ringing bells: 
The sound of bells fends off demons 
because they're afraid of the loud noise. -

Cemetery: You must hold your breath while going past a 
cemetery or you will breathe in the spirit of someone who has 
recently died. So evil can’t enter in us. 
Chimney Sweep: (European country) It's 
very lucky to meet a chimney sweep by 
chance. Make a wish when Sighting one, 
and the wish will come true. 
Cigarettes: 
It is bad luck to light three 
cigarettes with the same match.

God. Other superstition has that dropping an umbrella on the floor 
might indicate a murder in the house.

 There is really no end of Superstitions. 
 New ones come up every day and majority of people 
dare not disregard these superstitious beliefs. 
 Education is one factor that can wipe out 
superstitions to some level.

  • 3. What is a superstition?  Some believe that superstitions is any think that people believe that is based on myth, magic or illogical thought.  Superstitions are also known as old wives’ tales, legends, and traditions. They may involve animals, graveyards, ghosts, inanimate objects, or even other people.
  • 4. Lucky Horseshoes:  Some people believe in order to bring good luck. A horseshoe hung in the bedroom will keep nightmares away.  This belief stems from the fact that a horse shoe has seven holes, which is considered to be a lucky number.  It is made of iron, so it can supposedly ward off evil spirits that may haunt you in your dreams.
  • 5. God Bless You: Sixth century:  It was believed that sneeze expelled evil spirits from the body.  It was than later believed that your soul could escape your body though sneeze and that by saying, “GOD BLESS YOU”  During the sneezed at that time the heart momentarily stops so saying “GOD BLESS YOU” was a way of welcoming the person back to life.
  • 6.  This superstition find it’s origin in the middles ages due to the misunderstand belief that single woman who associated themselves with many cats where actually witch who could become cats themselves.

Christians, at that time wanting to destroy all other religions from society, convinced people that black cats were demon. the a black cat crossing the path its considered as evil.  In England black cats are believed to bring “GOOD LUCK”.  Some believe Cats can see spirits and can hence guard you against evil spirits.
  • 8.  The Egyptians celebrated the birthday of their king. The Greek are said to have taken the idea from the Egyptians.  Lighting candles on a birthday cake originates from pagan beliefs in gods. People had believed that their gods lived in the sky among the stars.  If, all the candles are blown out in one breath, the wish will come true, and the person will have good luck throughout the year.
  • 9. Four leaf clover: • Though the origin of wishing over a four-leaf clover is lost to olden times it has long been a symbol of good luck and fortune. It has been also used in some traditions for finding a husband or a wife. If a person eat this leaf than after first time who meet he/she is this future mate.
  • 10. • “Find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you’ll have good luck.” (Middle time) when someone walked under ladder it was believed that he would sure face his/her own death by hanging.
  • 11. Fingers crossed for good luck: To cross one’s fingers is a hand gesture commonly used for good luck.
  • 12. Itchy Palms: Some people believe that  If the right palm itches, you will lose money, while an itchy left palm means that money is coming your way.  If both palm itches…you may want to go to a doctor for that.
  • 13.  Friday the 13th has been a source of superstition ever since the 19th century.  Many people will purposely avoid doing anything significant (like business meetings, socials, banquets, etc.) due to the belief that the day is cursed and its a source of ill fortune.
  • 14. Hiccups: If you have hiccups it means someone is thinking of you. Money: Greeks believe that money attracts money, so never leave your pockets, purses or wallets completely empty and never completely empty your bank account.  Reverse your luck by turning three times counter clockwise.
  • 15. Crows: One's bad, two's luck, three's health, four's wealth, five's sickness, six is death. Dishes: An old Mexican belief is if a dish or pot falls and breaks for no reason, someone in your family has died. Dog: If a dog howls 3 times, someone is going to die. Fish: A fish should always be eaten from the head toward the tail. Dream of fish: someone you know is pregnant.
  • 16.  Many airports skip the 13th gate.  Airplanes have no 13th aisle.  Hospitals and hotels regularly have no room number 13.
  • 17.  Italians omit the number 13 from their national lottery.  On streets in Florence, Italy, the house between number 12 and 14 is addressed as 12 and a half.  Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue.  In France, socialites known as the quatorziens (fourteens) once made themselves available as 14th guests to keep a dinner party from an unlucky fate.

  • 21. Cemetery: You must hold your breath while going past a cemetery or you will breathe in the spirit of someone who has recently died. So evil can’t enter in us. Chimney Sweep: (European country) It's very lucky to meet a chimney sweep by chance. Make a wish when Sighting one, and the wish will come true. Cigarettes: It is bad luck to light three cigarettes with the same match.
