1. Essay On Opening Retreat
Overview
As the Director of Career Services at the University of the New River I am planning an opening retreat for my staff. In our department, we strive to
help students define their life and career visions. Through connecting students in personalized ways to resources, people, organizations, and
opportunities we help them make their visions a reality. Our department is comprised of five full–time staff members and one graduate assistant. In
planning the annual retreat, I have consulted with both assistant directors. Since our department helps students bridge the gap between their academic
skills and the real world, our team believes it is important to have a close connection with academic affairs. Thus, our topic for this year's opening

Many of the principles of the SLI focus on the necessity for faculty to collaborate with student affairs professionals to make student learning a
campus–wide priority. George Kuh (1996) used the principles in the SLI to develop six principles to guide institutions to integrate the curriculum and
extra–curriculum: generate enthusiasm for institutional renewal; create a common vision of learning; develop a common language; foster
collaboration and cross–functional dialogue; examine the influence of student cultures on student learning; and focus on systematic change. The
common element in each of the six principles is campus–wide collaboration.
The cultures and functions of academic and student affairs are different enough that there is an accepted inclination for the two to remain separate.
However, it is critical to design unique and engaging ways to encourage personnel in the two divisions to come together in the shared purpose of
improving student learning. It is important to facilitate discussion between the two divisions. As Baxter and Baxter (2011) explain, "we need to
organize our institutions in a way that engages mixed groups of people and forces us to venture outside traditional silos" (p. 70). Before academic and
student affairs personnel can create meaningful collaborative programs and services, they need to engage in cross–divisional dialogue to discuss each

4. Opening Statement Analysis
Paragraph 1 – Content of class instruction. Information covered during the class. During week eight we began class by letting our classmate read her
opening statement. Everything said she said in her opening statement covered the guidelines of what is required. One thing that my classmate
mentioned that other students in class did not explain in their opening statement was the conflict of interest. Before a mediator can mediate they need
to make sure there is not a conflict of interest. The best way to address this issue is to state whether you have worked with any group or special
interest that could conflict with the current mediation. After we covered the opening statement of our classmate we then did a role play for the auto
anguish activity. This activity would cover a majority of class,...show more content...
Lastly, the opening statement needs to be readdressed to both parties to further emphasize what will be happening in the mediation. Overall the
role play was very good and the audience was led to believe the dispute was real. One of the last comments made by our professor was we need to
start using tools to help the parties think how they would want to resolve the conflict. Because the conflict did not lead to a solution we then
moved on to an exercise called brainstorming. This activity would further allow us try to reach an agreement on the many uses of different items.
Some of the rules of this agreement were no opposing opinions when it came to discussing options. This activity was meant went to facilitate
conversation and reach an agreement between the groups. Our group was asked to list the purposes of paperclip. Some of the uses for the paperclip
include a shirt tie, a phone holder and nail cleaner. This exercise allowed the people of each group to come up with ideas which showed how to let
parties find a solution on their own. One of the last topics we discussed were allowing the
