Plant stanols and plant sterols, together called phytosterols, are clinically proven to lower cholesterol when about 2 g/day is used. They occur naturally in plant based foods, but only in small concentration. Some sources of plant stanols and plant sterols are presented in these slides.
2. Natural sources of plant stanols and plant sterols
Phytosterols, including plant stanols and plant sterols, are structural components of plant
cells
Plant stanols and plant sterols are naturally present in plant based foods
The most common dietary sources of plant stanols and sterols are vegetable oils like
rapeseed oil and sunflower oil and cereals like wheat and rye1-5
The easiest way to have an effective cholesterol-lowering dose is to use products with added
plant stanol ester6 like Benecolยฎ foods or food supplements
