2. What is the Communicative Approach?
In terms of language teaching, the
communicative approach is a way of teaching a
second language that avoids teaching grammar.
Instead of that, it focuses on the communicative
patterns of language, that is, interaction in class
throughout ordinary situations and everyday
experiences.
3. Our communicative session
We have designed a three activity lesson for 1.30 hour
session where the topic is tourism.
We will work with vocabulary and expressions such as:
travel by (car, bus, train, plane, boat), airport, check-in, to
fly, to land, to take off, destination, journey, rout, travel,
trip, hotel, vacation, how can I get to?…
The aim of these activities is to encourage students to
talk and represent typical travel situations.
4. 1st
activity: Presentation
The teacher presents a situation, s/he talks about a
trip, telling about her/his experiences, anecdotes,
stories…
After this, the teacher will ask the students about the
trips they might have done, trying to get as much
information as possible.
The students will follow the structure the teacher
previously showed when talking about his/her
experiences.
5. 2nd
activity: Practice
The teacher will propose a different activity by
grouping the students in three or four (depending on the
number of students).
Each group will be given a map or photographs of a city
or a country. With that information (they will have the
chance to look for more info on the internet), they will
have to plan a journey, trip… They will show to the rest of
the class how they have planned it, where they will sleep,
what they will see… and representing an hypothetical
situation.
6. 3rd
activity: Production
Students will have to write an essay for
homework taking into account the structure they
have been given.
They will have to talk about a journey or a trip
they have already done. It doesn’t matter if it is
not true. They can invent it.
Next day they will have to present their essay before the class. The purpose
is that they lose their fears to talk, so there is no problem if they make
mistakes. They are necessary to learn. The teacher will correct these mistakes
without penalizing them.
7. They will have to use:
past simple.
verbs such as “travel”, “visit” or “stay”.
vocabulary and expressions from the unit (“monuments”,
“hotel”, “by plane”, “tickets”, “luggage”, etc.)
Didactic contents
The structure that they have to follow
will be composed of:
Introduction (when, where, who)
Development (how they went,
what they did, what they learnt…)
Closing (if they missed the place
after coming back, what was the best,
if they recommend it…)
8. Conclusions
To increase the communicative skills in a second
language of the students by representing a common
situation.
To make a more effective lesson, where practicing
the main vocabulary and expressions proposed are
the most important purposes.
To create a relaxed environment where we know
each other and where everybody feels part of the
class.
