Purpose of descriptive writing
DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
A descriptive writing creates a picture of a person, place, thing,
or event.
Used in most genres of writing/literature
So…
• Descriptive writing is used in most types of writing including
narrative writing
FIVESENSES
Allthefivesensesinclude:
Sensory language example
• The acid smell penetrated (went into) my nostrils as a breathed
deeply. (sense of smell)
• His hair feels wiry. (sense of touch)
Types of descriptive writing
• There are different types of descriptive writing. They include:
1. Vivid Details
2. Figurative Language
3. Active Verbs
4. Writing from Observation
1. VIVID DETAILS
• Descriptive writing includes details that show instead of tell.
Sensory details allow the reader to see, hear, smell, taste and
touch what the writer is describing. "The cat walked down the
street," does not include descriptive details. “He gave
a vivid description of the scene” includes details that create a
picture in the reader's mind.
2. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
• Descriptive writing often includes figurative language, or
language that employs figures of speech.
• This type of descriptive writing includes devices like metaphors,
similes and personification.
3. ACTION VERBS
• Descriptive writing includes as much detail as possible in as few
words as possible. Using active verbs makes writing more
precise. Linking verbs--"is," "was" and "are"--are not active.
Action verbs--"race," "sing" and "dance"--create compelling
writing. Instead of writing "she walked slowly," it is more precise
to write "she meandered." Using strong verbs draws in the
reader.
HOW TO WRITE A DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY
• One of the keys to writing a descriptive
essay is to create a picture in your
reading audience’s mind by engaging all
five of their senses – smell, sight, touch,
taste and sound. If you can do this, then
your essay is a success, if not, then you
have a lot of work to do.

Step 2: Create a thesis statement
• A thesis statement is the key idea or theme for the essay. It
states the purpose of the essay and acts as a guide for the rest
of the essay. The thesis statement should appear in your
introduction and be restated in your conclusion
3. Write a strong introduction
• The introduction to the descriptive essay should set the scene
and introduce the reader to the subject.
• Use the list of sensory details to describe the subject. Have a
strong opening line that grabs the reader’s attention. Then,
end the introduction with your thesis statement
Yourintroductioncouldbe…
4. DESCRIBE THE TOPIC WITH VIVID
ADJECTIVES
• Use adjectives that express emotion. Be as specific as you can.
• For example, rather than use a broad adjective like “angry,” go
for a specific adjective like “rageful” or “tempestuous.” Choose
adjectives that will paint a clear image in the reader’s mind
YourVividAdjectivecouldbe…
5. USE METAPHORS AND SIMILIES
• Metaphors are when you compare one thing to another. Use
metaphors to show the reader what you think about the topic,
rather than simply tell the reader how you feel.
• For example, “My mother is a workhorse.”
6. Discuss your emotions and thoughts
about the topic
• Do not be afraid to express your emotions in your essay. Use
first person “I” to discuss your feelings about the subject in
detail. Do you feel joy, sadness, angry, or disgust with the
subject? How do you respond emotionally to the subject.
7. Wrap your essay with a strong
conclusion
• Your conclusion should tie all the thoughts in your essay
together. Restate your thesis statement in the conclusion and
end with a strong final sentence.
• Do not add anything new to your essay in the conclusion.
Simply evaluate your thoughts in the essay and wrap things up
with a short, final statement
PURPOSE OF DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
• The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a
person, place or thing in such a way that a picture is formed in
the reader's mind. Capturing an event through descriptive
writing involves paying close attention to the details by using
all of your five senses.
ASSIGNMENT
• Research on the last type of descriptive writing
• Write a descriptive essay on
“MY BEST FRIEND”
