Global markets have increased the plethora of options available to Indian consumers. With the clear shift in consumer tastes and preferences, food companies have also capitalized on the same. While Indian consumers are still not as heavily impacted by the obesity epidemic like some other developed nations – there is a clear shift; one which does not augur well for the health of the average citizen. The objective of this paper was to identify these key lifestyle trends that have emerged over the dozen years or so – and understand the way they are changing food habits. For this purpose, we talked to 600 respondents across 6 cities in India. The research was conducted using a questionnaire administered online and through CATI. The results overwhelmingly show that there is a shift from opting to eat at home to opting to eat out. Also interestingly awareness about harmful effects of processed foods was high but the reason for consumption was attributed primarily to ease of purchase. The implications of the research are an attempt to ensure that key steps are taken by public officials: such as a tax on unhealthy foods, subsidies for healthy food, and promotion of healthy norms. Also FSSAI guidelines need to strengthen to ensure that customer awareness increase and food companies opt for a more transparent communication platform.

Abstract The paper investigates Nigeria’s attempt at improving food security using the agricultural promotion policy and Sustainable Development Goal 2. It situates the discussion via empirical and cross-national review that juxtaposes Nigeria with seven other countries. The study relied on secondary sources of data, which were textually analysed. It is observable from the review that food insecurity results from a plethora of factors, namely: poor funding of agriculture; top-bottom approach to policy formulation and implementation; inadequate appreciation of the role of science and technology; natural disasters; and human-induced afflictions such as insurgency, banditry and general security deficits within and across national borders. To ameliorate these, strategic planning; robust technology adoption/adaptation; resuscitation of agricultural co-operative societies and funding institutions operating at reduced or free-interest on loans to practising farmers are canvassed by this paper. Cereals are synonyms of Indian food production, obviously due to its lion share (~ 90 %) in total Indian food basket. Since time immemorial, fate of Indian agriculture heavily depends upon the success of cereals production. Agriculture glory of India must be strengthened all the way through achieving self sufficiency in food production first; secondly by improving our agriculture image at global arena, by get redden off from net importer to net exporter, obviously through strong presence in global agriculture market. We are marching in the right direction; cereals are the leaders in the food commodity export especially rice “The Basmati Rice”. Since, as of now, Indian share in the world trade is meagre (~1.0%), there are needs to scale up to the tune of 6% in very quick succession. No doubt, Cereals and coarse cereals should be a front leader in this endeavourer. Since a lot more has to be done; we have to have adhered on do more policy. This article discuss at length on past glory, present status and future prospect of the great Indian food basket famously known as “The Cereals”.

Diverse and quality diets are crucial to sustainable growth and development of under-five children, especially those of rural farming households. This study investigated the dietary diversity, environment, and health-related factors of young children. The study employed the use of cross-sectional survey data from 140 under-five children of cassava farming households in Ogun and Oyo states, South-West Nigeria. The study estimated factors influencing dietary diversity of under-five children and assessed children dietary diversity, and the availability of some environment and health-related factors of the farming households. The findings indicated that 98.7% and 97.5% of children consumed grains, with roots and tubers while 36.7% and 36.3% consumed legumes in Ogun and Oyo states respectively. The results also found that 48.6% of children sampled met the minimum cut-off point of 4 food groups with dietary diversity mean score of 3.28. The logit regression analysis indicated that child’s age, mothers’ age, distance to farm, and food expenditure were among the significant determinants of children dietary diversity. Therefore, this study seeks the collaborative efforts of stakeholders in providing nutrition-sensitive intervention programs for household members, especially mothers and young children in order to promote consumption of diversified diets and enhance healthy living of rural farming households.

Background Being active and adhering to a right dietary regime perpetuates physiological, psychological and social health of the individual. To ameliorate nutritional well being at the time of Covid 19 especially among farmers still a challenge due to lack of awareness and nutrition education program. Farmers are prominent in our nation and source of dependent for safe food they are unperturbed about their dietary pattern which effectuates illness, infection and diseases among farmers. Hence it is necessary to study about their dietary pattern, and educate those regarding safe eating practices, and to sustain good hygiene practices during Covid 19. Objectives The present study was conducted to elicit information regarding the socio demographic profile, medical history and dietary pattern of the farmers. To conduct and to analyze the effect of nutrition education program using the pretest and post test questionnaire. Methodology This experimental research was conducted among one hundred and sixty farmers between 20 to 60 years of age residing in the villages of Ramanathapuram district Tharakudi and Kokkarasankottai respectively using an Interview schedule. This study was conducted in the period of October 2020 to April 2021 after first wave hits India. Flex, Posters and Pamphlets were prepared and used as a tool for conducting Nutrition Education Program. Culmination of Nutrition education program was live demonstration and distribution of Foxtail millet pongal and kabasura kudineer to the farmers as to ignite the importance of traditional millets consumption, locally available fruits and Zinc and Vitamin C rich foods in farmer’s diet to combat the transmission of virus. Pre test and Post test questionnaire were used to assess the practice of eating right and to appraise the impact of nutrition education program. Statistical analysis’t’ test was used to determine the significance of the nutrition education program. Results Majority thirty five percent of the farmers aged above 50 and ninety five percent of the farmers are re using the oil which may induce affliction among farmers. It has been found that forty nine percent of the farmers reported with knee and joint pain and twenty six percent of the farmers had hyper tension. Almost all the farmers are including cereals daily in their diet and Palm oil is the main source of oil which was used in their cooking widely beside sunflower oil. Live demonstration of Foxtail millet pongal and kabasura kudineer were administered. Group counseling and in matter of necessity, personal counseling was also given to the farmers. Result reveals that there is a significant difference p 0.05 before and after the nutrition education program. Purpose –This study aims to explore dietary diversity (DD) and nutritional status of adolescents among rural farm households in Southwestern Nigeria. It analyses whether higher commercialization levels of farm households translate to better nutrition. Design/methodology/approach –This study was conducted in Ogun and Oyo States of Southwestern Nigeria, using primary data from352 farm households with a total of 160 adolescent members. The individual version of dietary diversity score (DDS) of nine food groups was used to calculate adolescent DDS over a 24-h recall period. World Health Organization AnthroPlus software was used in analyzing adolescents’ anthropometric data (height-for-age z-score and body mass index-for-age z-score) while household crop commercialization index (CCI) was estimated for each farm household. Separate logit models were used to examine thedriversof adolescents’ DDandmalnutrition. Findings –Thestudyfindings indicated that 100% of the adolescents consumed starchy staples while 0%, 3.1% and 12.5% consumed organ meat, milk/milk products and eggs, respectively. Results revealed that 74.1%and21.2%ofboyswerestuntedandthinwhiletheprevalenceinadolescent girls was 50.7%and9.3%, respectively. Prevalence of stunting was found to be very high (60%–83%) in all the four CCI levels’ households indicating that belonging to highly commercialized households (CCI 3–4) may not necessarily translate to better nutrition of adolescent members. Food expenditure (p < 0.01) and access to piped water (p <0.01) negatively influenced adolescents’ stunting mainly because of lower expenditure on food items and lower percent of household having access to piped water, respectively, while education (p < 0.01) had positive effects on adolescents’ DD. Originality/value –Previous studies have contributed to the body of knowledge concerning the link between agricultural commercialization and nutrition using under-five children of the households. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that investigated the influence of CCI on DDSandnutritional status of adolescent members of farm households in Nigeria. This study fills this existing knowledge gap in investigating adolescents’ DD and malnutrition among smallholder farm households.

The Political Economy of Hunger in 21st Century India

The study investigated the nutritional status of under-five children of farm households. The study utilized primary data from 352 farm households with 140 under-five children. Household crop commercialization index (CCI) was used to estimate cassava farm household crop sale ratio and categorize the households into four commercialization levels while WHO Anthro software was employed to analyze under-five children anthropometric indices such as weight-for-age z-score (WAZ), height-for-age z-score (HAZ) and weight-for-height z-score (WHZ). Logit regression model (LRM) was used to examine the drivers of under-five children’s nutritional status of farm households. The study found that 42.9%, 7.9% and 3.6% of the children are stunted, underweight and wasted respectively. The highest stunting level was recorded in zero level households (CCI 1). Although, some higher CCI households (medium-high and very-high level) recorded increased percent of stunted children. This revealed that being a member of low or high-level commercialization households may not guarantee better nutritional status of young children of farm households. The results of LRM indicated that the predictors of children nutritional status were child’s age, farm size, access to electricity, healthcare and commercialization variables. Moreover, weak positive and negative relationships exist between CCI and children’s nutrition outcomes as measured by the z-scores. The study recommended maternal nutrition-sensitive education intervention that can improve nutrition knowledge of mothers and provision of infrastructure that enhance increased farm production and promote healthy living among farm households.
