A survey of Students’ Needs in
Evening Classes
Dr. Shejiao Xu
SOAS Language Centre
Purpose of the survey
 To find out students’ learning expectations and needs
 To formulate an ideal teaching model for this particular
group of students
Student background
 University students who take Chinese for free
 Adult learners who learn Chinese after work
 Ages: 18-60
 Chinese learning experience: zero to many years of study
Self-study time after class
 Not enough time
 On the tube
 On the train
 At lunch break
 A few hours on the weekend or during the week
 Learn something everyday
Learning activities after class
 Flash cards
 Listening to Chinese songs/podcast
 Watching Chinese TV/movies
 Weekend homework
 Use of Apps
 Reading/writing Chinese characters
 Speaking with a conversation partner
The survey
 A questionnaire with 5 open questions distributed to
students in the first lesson
 Asking students’ expectation, teacher support, learning
focus, the ideal way of teaching and after-class learning
 63 collected at the Beginners’ level
 28 collected at the Intermediate and Advanced levels

A survey of students' needs in evening classes

  • 1. A survey of Students’ Needs in Evening Classes Dr. Shejiao Xu SOAS Language Centre
  • 2. Purpose of the survey  To find out students’ learning expectations and needs  To formulate an ideal teaching model for this particular group of students
  • 3. Student background  University students who take Chinese for free  Adult learners who learn Chinese after work  Ages: 18-60  Chinese learning experience: zero to many years of study
  • 4. Self-study time after class  Not enough time  On the tube  On the train  At lunch break  A few hours on the weekend or during the week  Learn something everyday
  • 5. Learning activities after class  Flash cards  Listening to Chinese songs/podcast  Watching Chinese TV/movies  Weekend homework  Use of Apps  Reading/writing Chinese characters  Speaking with a conversation partner
  • 6. The survey  A questionnaire with 5 open questions distributed to students in the first lesson  Asking students’ expectation, teacher support, learning focus, the ideal way of teaching and after-class learning  63 collected at the Beginners’ level  28 collected at the Intermediate and Advanced levels

  • 9. Daily topics  ‘conversational’, ‘basic situation’, ‘real life scenario’  ‘Travel’  BUT ‘it is impossible to cater to everybody’s personal preferences completely as some topics will be more relevant/useful to some people and less so for others.’

Writing, Chinese character, Pinyin  Confusion between writing and writing Chinese characters  The longer time students who have learned Chinese, the more importance they have realized about the Chinese character writing.  To write in Pinyin or read something with a combination of Pinyin, characters and translation
